Monarchs report, minus one

The Manchester Monarchs reported today for pre-camp testing in New Hampshire. Andrei Loktionov reported, even though his status had been in question because of a published report that he had signed to play in the KHL. The only player on the training-camp roster not to report today was Slava Voynov, who had been assigned to the Monarchs just before the lockout. I’ll pass along more about Voynov’s possible status as I hear it. The Monarchs will have their first on-ice training-camp session tomorrow.

[UPDATE: I'm now told that the Kings/Monarchs expect Voynov to report to Manchester on Sunday.]

Everybody in the Kings organization is going to get a good look at all the prospects if the league is shut down for awhile.

@Crown Royal, Problem is we have about 12 guys with the Kings that are in their career prime years (24 to 31). For the most part they are the better core players on the team. This is a real bad thing if we lose the season. Miss about 10 to 20 games it helps physically seeing we played into June, but to lose a season in the prime of the Kings Core group of this championship team is really about as bad a timing as there could have been. Of course the worst being if last year was lost.

    luc20rules Reply:

@Deke’r, The only winners are the teams that sucked in 2012. As they will have high draft picks in 2013 without having a 2nd bad record in the lockout year. That is how Pitt got both Malkin 2004 2nd overall pick, and Crosby 2005 1st overall pick. The Ducks got lucky in 2005 lotto getting #2 overall Bobby Ryan, from the 10th spot Laraslav Smid not being very good at 10th overall.

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @luc20rules,

What you’re saying is absolutely true but there are other ways to look at it as well. Older teams like Detroit, and Calgary are hurt worse. Other younger teams who haven’t won the Cup are trying to build team unity and figure out who can really play in the NHL and who won’t be that effective. The Kings already, for the most part, have those answers.

Every Kings player who won the Cup now becomes a more valuable commodity in terms of trade value. There is already pretty good depth in the organization and if DL is cagey he has a chance to make the organization even deeper by eventually using some of the current players as trade chips. A ten or twenty game delay would probably be ideal for the Kings rest-wise but I don’t think in the long run even a lost season will ultimately hurt the Kings more than any of the other 29 teams.

Since the leaders of the NHL have shown so little common sense, it is my guess they believed the rumors about Lokti going to the KHL and decided to keep his name off the Cup while meeting with Bigfoot and some aliens on a grassy knoll in Dallas.

Now, for 8 years, we’ve been on our own,
and owners’ grown fat off of broken bones,

“We’re losing money” is what the owners screamed,
and on the players is where they leaned,
    they again demanded cost cerain-teeeee,
oh, and while the Kings were looking down,
on the rest o the league they’d ran ’round,
    the nego’s were adjurned,
    no compromise was returned,
And instead of playing against the Sharks,
where Stolli’s slappers missed the mark,
the rinks just sat there in the dark,
    the year the NHL died…
    and we had STANLEY!!…

bye-bye North American ties, Uncle Gary and the Fehry sucked the fans til they’re dry…the KHL’s just gotten better by strides, singing this’ll be the day the league dies…this’ll be the day no pucks fly…

Very interesting read with some direct quotes from players saying they’d be willing to compromise on contract structure going forward, as long as existing contracts remain untouched. In an ironic twist, Ryan Clowe talks about principle.

@FKA PakiFro, Reading that article just pisses me off. The fact that we might miss an entire season, or a portion of the season, all because the owners just want to stick it to the players again. The players only want to make sure that the contracts that they’ve signed, will be paid in full. Set the numbers at 54% nest season, and 50% from then on and be done with it. The players get to recieve all of the money from the contracts that they’ve already signed, and after 1 year, the owners get the 50-50 split that they want.

(From the declassified June 11 logs)

Bettman: “What should I call you”?

Man in Black: “Deep Stick” will be fine.

Bettman: “Is this Ryan Clowe, I’m talking too?, Oh, never mind. Now operation LA fix is almost done, but we have to make sure the Kings win this because Marty’s getting really hot. Now I’m going to have the ref call a 5 minute boarding penalty and….”

Deep Stick: “You forgetting the Kings almost have more short handed goals than power play goals right now. ”

Bettman: “Can we get to Marty?”

Deep Stick: I doubt it. Maybe Elias, if we promise him the game puck FOR Marty. That might work”.

Bettman: It would make me feel better if the Kings could actually score 2 or 3 on it. Is there any way at all?”.

Deep Stick: Hmmm. The Devils PK hasn’t been great, true enough. We can slip in the remote controlled puck, and transmit the code to put it on someone’s stick. How about Lewis?

Bettman: Lewis doesn’t play on the Power Play.

Deep Stick: Leave that to me. We no longer have to worry about Kompon. Rembrandt I told you Nicholls was working for us?

    Bettman: Oh that’s right.

Deep Stick: 3 goals on that Power Play should do it. I’ll make sure Brodeur is pulled early on though, just to be safe.

Bettman: Great. Do you have a final score for me?

Deep Stick: 4…5…no lets make it 6 to 1.

Bettman: And NBC has been given “rumors” that Kovalchuk has a sore back? We still gotta take every precaution to make this believable.

Deep Stick: Got you covered there. No worries.

Bettman. Thanks. Here is a check for the usual amount.

@LB, Ouch! Thomas Hickey – Projection: He could be a third pairing defenseman
So basically they are saying he will be a Mike Weaver type undersized career 3rd pairing guy. 4th overall pick in a very, very, extremely bad draft year. I remember thinking it was odd hearing about how DL was trying very hard to trade down and/or the 4th overall pick for young prospects at the time.

@CB14, If hell freezes over and there is actually an agreement made this weekend are they actually going to play the full season without any preseason games at all? I think at least 10-15 games lost off the regular season is a foregone conclusion at this point, even in the best case scenario.

    [Reply]

    CB14 Reply:

@HockeyNerd, I don’t know for sure that they would begin the season without any pre-season games, but I would think that they would try their best to get in all 82 regular season games. As far as I know the players don’t get paid for pre-seson games, and the owners don’t get TV revenue for pre-season games either. So I could see them beginning the season without any pre-season games, but it is a bit far fetched.
