Bob and Jim, Goal 2

Well, today is a sad day for Kings fans, given that the team had been scheduled to play its first preseason games tonight, a split-squad set against the Phoenix Coyotes at Staples Center and Jobing.com Arena. The ice is painted and set at Staples Center, but it won’t be used, and there’s no indication that it will be used any time in the near future. Here’s one positive for the day… KingsVision has put out a video of Bob Miller and Jim Fox calling the Kings’ second goal from Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. I’m told they intend to release all of the goal videos, as well as the calls from Nick Nickson and Daryl Evans, so at least folks can relive the moments from June…

I wonder how much money the owners and the NHL will lose during the lockout vs. what they think they will save. I’m sure someone has run the numbers.

Me thinks it’s revenue which will never be recovered on so many levels.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@jess, actaully, and I don’t have the numbers, but it’s been said by several here in the days leading up to the lockout that owners stood to lose LESS if there was no season to be played… operating costs must be a…killer.

    [Reply]

    variable Reply:

    @jess,

it’s the smaller markets that will get hurt the most…but some of the owners are prepared and have a war chest full of reserved money for this period…

and that’s part of the issue – how to revenue share between the larger and smaller markets and how to get the players to pay for it…

in many ways, the issues between the larger and smaller markets regarding the aforementioned revenue sharing splits are just as contentious as the nhlpa and the owners…

that’s why i’m getting less optimistic that they can get this all settled before they have to cancel the winter classic – to me, that’s the ultimate doomsday scenario…

if there’s any leverage that the players can muster, it comes from the premise of the nhl not wanting to lose the revenue/promotion/etc. of the winter classic…and the fact that the smaller markets might start to get impatient as time goes on and their losses pile up, putting more pressure on the larger markets to get a deal done – with everyone…

    [Reply]

    jess Reply:

    @variable,

Well, got to have some reg season games for at least 8-10 weeks before that winter classic, otherwise it will have no muscle behind it, no hype, low ratings. Hey, I know, put Bettman on it -nevermind…

Now that Al Davis is gone, hopefully Mark Davis will be easier to deal with. So far, so good, hiring a president of team operations is the best move this orgnization has made since they hired both Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden back in 1998.

AEG also just recently bought the Oakland Coliseum. The city of Oakland is dying. The Athletics are leaving and so are the Wariors. AEG arranges for the Raiders to move to LA then sells the Coliseum property to some developer. Half the fans at Raiders games fly in from LA or the Inland Empire anyway, so the game attendance is guaranteed. This has been in the works for awhile, even before Al died. Marcus Allem lighting Al’s torch is just another step to bringing the Raiders back to LA, since Marcus’ lory years were in LA, he is USC alumni, and people in LA love him.

Not much viewship for WWF and probably less wagering. The NFL viewing and wagering maybe closer linked than people think. I just know I spent my first 2 picks on small WR and these scabs have taken Jordy Nelson & Wes Welker out of the games allowing the holds and downfield contact.

Obviously it ended up proving true as we neared the 20 game mark, and the playoffs were a dream come true as far as dominance. Even with the right peices, the way they played with everybody on the same page and everybody buying into the system, even Penner couldn’t be a screw up!

But the reason you knew it was Raider ball was not because of the replay, the real easy way to tell was watching the Patriots reaction after the referee signalled Raider ball. They walked off the field dejected and silent…They knew.

    Stuart Reply:

@puck73, true… and they would like JJ on there too! I would like to have Bob on there, but maybe you see that they same way as having TM or JJ on there? I would not say he’s (talking TM here) THE reason, but I do feel that his contribution to this team cannot and should not be denied. It’s different than when Bylsma took over for the Pens, and I understand that DS is more the reason for the success, but to ignore the contributions made by DS is childish and IMO blinded by the disdain that some still hold for him. And if nothing else, maybe TM’s contribution could be seen as dumbing down the players so much that they were starving for some real leadership to wake them up from the duldrums…

“Another example of the Players Just Not Getting It when it comes to relating to fans. A quote today from Mike Fisher: ‘This is my passion, but it’s not my life… The fall is a good time for fishing and other things.’ Now at first it seems like an innocent comment from a really nice guy. But if you think about it for a minute, it’s a simple statement about entitlement. How many of us get paid for our ‘passion’. How many of us have benefited so much from our ‘passion’ in a short time that we don’t have to worry about maintaining a lifestyle and can focus on ‘fishing and other things’. How many of us would love to have the luxury and peace of mind that can allow us to thumb our noses at our bosses and enjoy life at a casual level. Most people think I am lucky, retired at 49 and a comfortable lifestyle, but I spent over 30 of those years busting my ass, and paying the price for what I loved to do. My career cost me a marriage, cost me friendships and cost me more than a few pieces of blood and bone. Yet even after that, I don’t have the luxury to spend my time fishing and not worrying about bills, cars breaking down, a leaking roof or anything else that could dramatically alter my lifestyle. These guys (the players) really don’t get what life is really like; it’s obvious every day in the things they say. It reminds me so much of a movie I watched called ‘The Company Men’ about high ranking execs that were fired when their fortune 500 company downsized. They just didn’t get that average Joe doesn’t golf every day, because it costs money, they just didn’t get that image doesn’t matter when compared to cost and why they couldn’t keep their Bugatti instead of a cheap Ford. They didn’t get how people managed to live in homes that didn’t cost a million plus and still be worried about losing it all overnight. They didn’t get that $1000 a month on restaurant bills is more than Joe average pays for groceries and feeds a family. They honestly didn’t get it. And I think that sums up the players as well. Every day, a player we idolize and worship, open his mouth only to prove, he has no idea who we are and what we go through. I think that is why so many former players, the ones who no longer have ridiculous paychecks and have to actually manage their lives are a lot less in favour of the NHLPA ‘s position. That’s also why I think that these players are comfortable now, but after they receive their escrow checks and then the money stops that their perspective starts to change. At least I hope so.”

@Stuart, I’m sorry but not seeing the point here. All of half of a paragraph from a player saying now he has time to so other things (granted maybe not the brightest thing he could have said) and suddenly IN THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE we get a 1000 word sob story of this guy’s life and how rich people don’t care and how players are rich people so they don’t care and they all grew up having anything they wanted at any time and none of them can identify with the “average Joe”, whatever that means? What exactly IS this guys point? Is it the players fault his car breaks down? That his wife left him? That he decided to retire at 49? That he’s worried about his next mortgage payment? I’ve got news for some people, not only do we the fans not owe anything to the players but THEY OWE NOTHING TO US. I know I am going to get some arguments on this but the checks Kopitar and Doughty cash say “Los Angeles Kings Pay to the order of…”, NOT “Hockey Fans”. Kopitar and Quick report to and take orders from Sutter, Lombardi, Stevens, etc., NOT US. If you don’t like how they play hockey or act in public don’t buy a ticket. That’s your right. But being judgmental about people you don’t know personally, especially on the basis of half a paragraph is frankly completely and thoroughly ridiculous.

Well, I’m not that guy, so I can speak on what I took that point to be: namely, that players should take the money they’re being offered and move on already.

Much like the comments made by Devellano about Lucic… It must be hard to 6M worth of checks for a seasons worth of work. I think missed the point entirely on the above post. The person is not BLAMING players for anything other than being disconnected from reality. I didn’t read anywhere in that, that the author feels that the players owe the public anything other than doing their jobs, which they are not doing atm. If anything I thought it put things in a proper perspective, of how the herd views entertainment and how those providing the entertainment should be a little more grateful and appreciative that their brand of entertainment is sought after by the herd.

I will say this: as this stretches on, the fire for it to be over diminishes for me. It started off totally in favor of the players and anti-ownership, but now I’m about as indifferent as I can be. If this season doesn’t ever start, so be it. Initially I would’ve never said such things as “oh, I’ll never buy another ticket to see another game again” because I didn’t want to be that hypocrite, but I’ve actually found myself having conversations lately where I’ve really begun to give the idea some credence… I know, I’m only one person who might only be responsible for about 300-600$ annually spent on the Kings, but I really think I’ll be attending more minor league games in the coming years where I can see hockey played just the same… I’ll still root for the Kings and be as big a fan as I am now, but I won’t spend on my passion the way I once did.

but I digress… I’ve never been one to think that we as fans comprise a paycheck for players anywhere, in any league (except for maybe the GB Packers), so you won’t get any arguement from me there. It sounds kind of like you chose this persons rant to launch your own, and that’s fine too… the point of this rant was “These guys (the players [and obviosuly some bloggers]) really don’t get what life is really like” I’m sorry all you saw was someone’s sob story and you missed it. Perspective… it’s like navals: Everyone has one but most hardly pay attention to it.

@Stuart, “The person is not blaming players for anything other than being disconnected from reality”. And that’s a valid point and rant to make except the small little problem is this: how do you make such an argument from one NHL player simply saying he has more time to do other things to what you perceived as his point which is players should be more thankful and appreciative of the opportunities they have? How on this earth is this guy giving us a sob story on HIS life struggles doing that? This guy took something ONE player said that admittedly he should have thought through before saying to the media and tried to use it to make a much bigger point. Unfortunately I don’t see what one thing has to do with the other.

    Stuart Reply:

@HN, and that’s valid too… if you can’t see it then it isn’t there.

  51. So since no ones starting the season in Europe, that means no Stanley Cup winner this season. Everybody hoping for a season have already been pre-destined to lose out, but at least 1/2 the coaches that could have gone will have thier jobs for 1 more season.

Gary – Ok gentlemen, lets settle down and discuss the upcoming CBA negotiations strategy
Old Dude #1 – Who are you?
Gary – Gary Bettman, your commissioner?
Old Dude #2 – Oh yeah, huh, huh
Gary – Ok, I think we should use the strategy of a mantra I heard in a Kings Vision video.
Old Dude #1 – The Kings? This is a hockey league, not a basketball league
Old Dude #2 – When did we put a hockey team in Sucramento?
Old Dude Phil – He means the Kings, from LA, the team that won the Cup
Old Dude #3 – A basketball team won the Cup!
Old Dude Phil – No, my hockey team won the Cup. In LA. The Kings won the Cup
Old Dude #2 – Shut up Phil, you are an NFL owner!
Gary – Gentlemen, please, please, calm down. Drink some more hot cocoa. Now, you ready to hear the strategy?
Old Dude #1 – Yea, go ahead. Does it include any hot chicks, heh, heh, heh?
Gary – “All we wanna do is win, win, win, no matter what, what, what!” It even comes with catchy music and the singer sounds like Doc Emerick on a slight helium buzz.
Old Dude #3 – Brilliant!! What does it mean?
Old Dude #2 – I like Doc. I also like Depends.
Old Dude Phil – It means I’m going to lose money
Old Dudes Together – Shut up Phil, you are an NFL owner!
Gary – (and these guys pay me $8 million ayear. Like taking candy from babies)

Rich, I read an article stating that Slava Voynov will not be on the cup but you say he is.
I would obviously trust your list more than any other writer but can you tell me your thoughts on that? It may have been Loktionov they mentioned Thanks.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@KingsRule, The article must have meant Lokti. Voynov as somebody who played the required number of games in the Stanley Cup final goes on without having to be petitioned.

But I SOOOOO wanted to hear the noise in that long corridor between the casino and the arena. And I love the stunned looks of the unaware casino patrons when the “Kings” army dressed out if Kings Jerseys marches through after the game. The foreign tourists in particular look worried then!

@Weasel, Dodgers probably would be cool with it. Dodgers did an Awesome tribute to the Kings on August 24th. Thanks to @Puck73 40+ insiders were there on Dodgers Kings Night with a Kings Championship themed Firework and Scoreboard and audio presentation (Briggs “This is LA” & MCR “Welcome to the Black Parade”), also it was the first time I heard the audio of Jim & Bob calling the game 6 win vs NJ.

Thanks again @Puck73 it was awesome.

@RichHammond, Alot has been made about who should and shouldn’t have been on the Cup for the Kings. I assume the LA Kings owner had the final say on how many, but who will get a championship ring. I am guessing that there is a Deluxe one for Players, Coaches, & Managers/Owners, and a lesser version for supporting staff. I’m sure the other insiders would like to know the lists for both. Puck73 probably wants TM to get a tier 3 cracker jack version.

@DavidG, Hi David no you are not alone, I too asked before but no one said back anything if anyone would like to meet some where in Vegas, as it would be nice to meet up with fellow King fans, there wonder if MGM has DVD player in there lounge and we all could meet uo watch game 6 with a cold one?

@Gail Web, that would be fantastic! I would love to get together with some kings fans. MGM sounds like an ideal meeting place since we would have been there anyway.

    Gail Web Reply:

@DavidG, Hi David Yes they have a main bar near the check in to hotel, first floor, I stayed there last year since it was my first time to FF even though I been a Kings fan for twenty five years I never went and had such a great time last year for the first time, I bought tiks way early for this year, too now. So seems ok if you all like to meet at 7 PM or so in mail lobby of MGM since I am staying there again this time too. Or if any different places just let us know, either way I will bring my DVD just in case and of course I will be wearing some Kings gear for sure. I figure to do pool during the day, and Friday meet some Kings fans, and then on Sat pool again and find a show for Saturday night maybe?

    Go Kings Go!

    :-) Anyhow

I was shocked to read that Bob McKenzie thinks the season is pretty much done.
I would normally blow it off as hyperbole, but he’s pretty in-tune with what’s going on.
I’d hate to say that I would consider giving up on the sport, but these morons are seriously going to test my allegiance. Cancelling 2 seasons in 8 years… there’s certainly good reason to throw in the towel.
I’m hoping that McKenzie is wrong for once, but this has a really bad feel to it.
I still believe in the end the players will cave, but perhaps that’s just wishful thinking on my part.
Bettman’s succeeding with his ultimate goal which was to kill the game.
Congrats to all for f****** up a great thing.

    I have a new take on negotiations…..
How about we lock Bettman and Fehr in a room together and have a lotto drawing for 10 fans to get 1 hour alone with those 2…Since their won’t be a season, at least there would have to be two new negotiators the next time :) kidding..sort of!
