Stanley Cup rink tour, round two

For those looking for an opportunity to take a photo with the Stanley Cup, the Kings have announced the second stage of their fundraisers at local rinks. The events will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 2, [EDIT: please note the corrected date] at six rinks throughout Southern California. The purchase of a raffle ticket will give you a chance to take a picture with the Stanley Cup. Each location will have 50 winners. Proceeds from the raffles will directly benefit youth hockey programs at each rink. The first round of the rink tour, conducted last month, raised more than $11,000 for local programs, according to the Kings.

Here is the contact information for each rink. To inquire about raffle tickets, contact each rink directly. Each winner is allowed to bring one guest to be included in the professionally-taken photo, and photos will be available online to download.

@Gail Web, As pointed out by Surly & Scribe, the best way the players can pressure the owners is by playing elsewhere. The owners sole leverage relies on the fact that the players do not get paid during a lockout and will start to hurt financially over time. If the players can find work elsewhere though it eases that leverage and starts to give concern to the owners about other leagues (cough*KHL*cough) gaining prominence.

This news makes me miss John Candy. If I remember correctly from the movie Splash, he could’ve taught Kopi a handy Swedish phrase.

So if I buy a raffle ticket, but I don’t get selected for a photo, do I receive a 5% interest payment on future raffle tickets or should I take Option #2 and ask for a refund and lose possible Cup photo opportunities later in the season?

Off Topic: I just went over to NHL.com hoping for an update. Am I nuts or are there NO stories referencing the lockout visible on the first webpage at all? If there is I didn’t see it so it couldn’t have been very obvious.

Assumimg I just didn’t miss the headline because it was SO HUGE or something, doesn’t this seem somewhat disingenuous? I mean who they heck goes to NHL.com other than hokcy fans.

They already killed off any casual fans so all of us left are kind of aware that there is a lockout going on now.

(If I’m mistaken please accept my heartfelt – “Nevermind” — think Emily Latella)

@Rich Hammond, is the raffle ticket for all 6 rinks or is it 1 per location, should i get multiples. Im planing to drive down to LA from San Jose ?

    Rich Hammond Reply:

One per location…every rink is having its own raffle.

  6. FiG17 says:

OT question: As far as contracts go (I was kind of too young to really care to know about this last time) if the whole season is lost, do players lose a year on their contract? I mean, players set to be free agents next summer will be free agents even if they don’t get to play at all this year?

  7. FaceWash says:

Only 2 of these locations are in Los Angeles County and they couldn’t be further away from me if they tried to be. Wow!!! OK, I waited 35 years for the Kings to win the Cup and I’m not even able to see the damn thing up close and personal. Kinda crappy.

    [Reply]

    pr0cess Reply:

@FaceWash, Its a replica so dont worry we will never touch the real one

    [Reply]

    LomitaKingsFan Reply:

@pr0cess, Pretty sure this is the ‘real’ cup. The replica usually remains in Toronto while the ‘real’ cup goes on tour. At least that is my understanding.

    [Reply]

    Rich Hammond Reply:

It’s not a replica. There is a replica kept in Toronto when the Cup is on “tour.”

    [Reply]

    DesertKing Reply:

    @pr0cess,

The true orginal Lord Stanleys Cup iz kept in the vault at the HHOF in Toronto.

    [Reply]

    Rich Hammond Reply:

Yes, correct. The original top bowl doesn’t ever travel.

    JD Reply:

@FaceWash, After waiting 35 years, having to put in a little effort should be no problem, don’t think they’ll bring it to you.

Anyone know the price of tickets? Can’t find out at the moment.

    [Reply]

    LomitaKingsFan Reply:

@Keeper, Was just at PV Ice Chalet over the weekend. If memory serves the cost of a raffle ticket was $5. I imagine it would be the same at the other rinks as well.

    alma Reply:

@Keeper, Glacial Gardens and Ontario Ice Skating Center are both charging $5 per chance

  9. TeamJMFJ says:

Just a warning….get there early…i showed up to an event in the first rink tour 15 minutes early only to find out the cup had been there for 45 mins and would be leaving at the start time of the event….just an FYI

    [Reply]

    Kenny44 Reply:

@TeamJMFJ, Given the start times and the distance to travel between locales, I half expect one group photo with all the raffle winners.

Glad to see that the Cup is still making the rounds despite the lockout. Any word if it gets to stay in LA longer because of the lockout? Or will it go back to Toronto as scheduled regardless?

  12. Debra Turull says:

I just don’t understand the lock out. It is fancially hurting so many of the workers who support the team play: the parking lot attendents, the food stands, the ticket collectors, ushers, etc. I guess their future doesn’t count. If the league is so worried about the teams that aren’t doing well, I can’t help but wonder how not playing the season will help them.

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

@Debra Turull, Its simple if the super wealthy can’t bully the sort of wealthy, then whats the point of being super wealthly. All this while showing the middle class and the poor don’t factor in at all. Wars have been fought over less. Its simply a matter of principle.

I’m kind of suprised that the cup is not going to Iceland in the city of Paramount. I believe it is still open and it is where the zamboni was invented. Iceland was founded by the Zamboni family.

    Debra Turull Reply:

@alma, but the guys who play there are great. Our friend who owns the best pizza place in the inland empire plays there and he has a blast

    Kenny44 Reply:

@alma, Norwalk is was the worst rink in the all history of the world. The fecal breeze that welcomed you in the parking lot was a harbinger of the crappyness inside. The rotting facility, the undersized rink with chain link over the boards, the ice cracking and coming up in chunks – it was hockey hell. But it fit my starving student budget so many years ago, and kept my game alive a bit longer til I could afford a place like Paramount.

    Stuart Reply:

@Kenny44, LOL w/re to Norwalk… many moons ago my buddies ran a hockey shop in Whittier and Norwalk was the biggest distributer of gear this side of the Mississippi (which was their main business which is why the rink was in such disrepair)… For the life of me, I cannot think of the man’s name that ran that joint… I want to say it was like Hanz or something… LOL good times…

    Stuart Reply:

come to think of it, Hanz was the name of an owner that rank a roller rink in Downey…

    Kenny44 Reply:

    @Stuart
Yeah, I remember the rafters just stuffed beyond all responsible capacity with gear and boxes. I had nightmares of the roof collapsing on me to thwart my GWG breakaway. Good times, indeed ;)

Question – Would someone who bought raffle tickets know in advance if they had won the photo op or is it all something that is determined right there at the rink? I would have to be arranging to miss work and it would be better to know if I was missing work for “something” if you know what I mean.

    [Reply]

    Amy Reply:

@The Gondor, they tell you beforehand. I was told the raffle was going to be Monday. But I got a call today (Friday) informing me MY TICKET WAS PULLED!!!!!! I GET A PICTURE WITH THE CUP!!!
