The Kings have announced that Slava Voynov has been assigned to Manchester of the American Hockey League in the (very likely) event of a lockout. Voynov played 54 regular-season games for the Kings last season (plus the entire playoffs) but was eligible to be assigned to the AHL without having to pass through waivers. Voynov is the last of the Kings who could be assigned to the AHL without first having to clear waivers.
Hmmmmm….

I got a very confusing email about my two options, if anyone else got that email and understands it, can they explain the terms. I think option #2 is a straight refund for any games not played with some deal that you will lose your seats for playoffs, while option 1 – I dont know what is going on with that, im receiving interest? but not a refund for my games??????

Well, at least the lock-out will give the NHLNetwork time to get up to speed and realize the Kings are the Stanley Cup champions, not Boston, not Washington, not Pittsburgh and not Edmonton, and actually develp some programming related to the Kings. Maybe something like “Crown Change”, “2012, The Greatest Cup Run Ever”, “From 8 to 1, When Everyone Said It Couldn’t Be Done”, “!6-4, Could Anyone Really Ask For More?”, “Jon Quick, Please Meet Mr. Conn Smythe.” No hockey sucks, cancelling frozen Fury sucks, the NHL Network sucks, having the Stanley Cup ROCKS!!

i think the nhl – even the most argumentative ownership groups – will try to do a lot more to save the winter classic from being cancelled, so that might give the nhlpa some leverage, but will it be enough…?…i think if we get to a point in mid-december where nothing is done, my guess is so will be the season – done…that is the ultimate deadline foe having any kind of season this year…imo…

@variable, I’m one of those who feel it will get figured out after a month or two. This time the majority of the teams are actually making money. Last time the majority of the teams were losing money, and alot of it.
The only reason this lockout is happening is because the owners presented such an outrageous first offer. The players are willing to take a pay cut, but not a huge one like the owners want. I think ultimately they will settle around 54% with it decreasing 1% each year until it’s an even 50 / 50 split.
[Reply]
HockeyNerd Reply:

@CB14, I’m not that optimistic. The 2 sides are too far apart. Even as of right now the players could take the current ridiculous and absurd proposal and still make some pretty good money. The owners could just agree to the same exact terms we have now and be more than all right. Unfortunately the reality of what will happen is very different. The NHL has and will continue to basically extort the players, whether they say so or not they will NOT negotiate, they will just simply wait until the players cave in. It worked last time to a T.
For their part, the players have Fehr representing them for a reason. And that reason is that they do NOT want to just hand over the farm like last time. If they are going to lose several months or a season over this, they do not want to be dictated to.
So there you have it. Each side is going to just wait for the other side to do something they aren’t going to do.
It doesn’t look good at all!!!!!!

Sad. This is just sad. While I was moved to tears by the Kings winning the cup this year I am disgusted by the labor dispute. We’ll see plenty of articles (on other sites) and opinions (many of them very reasoned) about which side to take. I’m going to take the side of the fan. Which is the hardest side to take, especially when your team won the Stanley Cup this summer (and you were brought to tears by it).
At the end of the day the reason why both the players and the owners feel at least a little comfortable in allowing a lockout to occur (or any stoppage) is at the end of the day because of their confidence that after all the BS is handled, after all the changes in the schedule (and the impact that has on so many things like the employees at the arena and the ability for some LA Kings fans to come back west and see his team raise their championship banner) that the fans will continue to buy those tickets, those sweaters and hats, and perhaps most importantly will continue to tune in.
Well, not me. As hard as it is to essentially boycott the NHL and my beloved Kings it is really the only thing that a fan can do to make their voice heard. Stop tuning in, stop patronizing the league, we’re the ones who are the bedrock for why this league exists. It may not be popular, but after the second lockout in less than 10 years I’ve had it. I’m out.

Gustavo Reply:

@John K.,
I’m taking it in stride.
If the whole season is cancelled, we got alternative plans to use the thousands of dollars the LA Kings owners will not be able to siphon out of my pocket. We’ll buy a single game ticket for the banner raising ceremony whenever that happens and probably never buy season tickets again.
Either way we’ve already decided not to spend a dime on merchandise, food or drink all season long. A bottle of water, perhaps, since we’re not allowed to bring our own. I have always voted with my wallet. This time around is no different. The aggravation the owners and players are putting their loyal paying fans through does not deserve rewards, patience or condoning.
As for whose side I’m on, I must admit to be one of the few people I know who does NOT side with the NHLPA. Yes, the owners first offer was draconian. But it was an offer and it was expected to be so.
Mr. Fehr, however responded with the most obnoxious concept imaginable: “We, the players, are going to tell the owners how their money should be shared among the teams so there is more revenue parity and we don’t have to make concessions we don’t want to make”…(major eye roll here) The NHLPA is better off forming its own league if they want to be so presumptuous as to tell their employers how the teams monies should be distributed.
Is there lack of revenue parity among the teams. No doubt.
Would it help for the weaker revenue teams get a bigger share of the pie? Perhaps, but not if these owners keep giving away Parise, Sutter & Weber type contracts.
Should the players be entitled to demand a different distribution of other people’s monies? Hell, no!!
The moment I read that arrogant statement from the NHLPA, I knew the season was lost. Boy, I wanted to be wrong so damn bad. Unfortunately I wasn’t. And until Mr. Fehr and the players back off from that stance, I doubt the owners will take anything the NHLPA says seriously. What Fehr and the players did only managed to create a level of animosity between them that did not need to be there.
I blame Fehr, more than I blame Bettman. And I’m the farthest thing from a Bettman fan, to begin with.

@Gustavo, You’re talking in circles. First you blame the palyers and then the owners. In 2004, the owners in theie wisdom wrote the contract for the nest 7 years and now all sudden it’s not good enough – this was their own contract. During the past number of years, these ego-hungry owners signed many of the players to huge, long-term contract just to try and out-do each other. Surprise !!!! After all this, they are now crying fowl and need more money ? What a bunch of idiots. The owners put themselves in this mess, not the players…. Look at it from the players point of view – If some stupid owner wants to give me a ten year contract paying about 5 to 10 million dollars a year, I’d be dumb not to take the money….Only one group at fault for this mess, the Owners. I’m with the players 100%.

@Gustavo, Apparently you didn’t read the first “draconian” offer. Part of the reason they said the offer was made was because of all the teams losing money. They already have a cap, so the owners are already telling other owners how to spend their money. Who are the Coyotes to be telling the Red Wings how to spend their money??
Since the owners are claiming loses for teams with low revenues, the players rightly said that if we’re going to keep the cap, then you need to increase revenue sharing, otherwise those teams are STILL going to be losing money, and those teams are no better off. I’m sure the players would gladly not tell the owners what to do with their money the instant the salary cap goes away.
A big thank you to both the NHL & NHLPA for yet again showing complete and total disregard for the fans. We pay yet again for greed of both sides who can’t decide on how to split 3.3 billion dollars. Simply shameful. If they come back in time for the winter classic, I hope that stadium is empty! I will not even watch the game. If they miss 1 regular season game, I will use the only power I have & boycot the entire 2012/2013 season. That will be just a few dollars of mine they won’t be fighting over.

So it begins but fear not my fellow bloggers.
The gap ain’t that big. They can work out pretty quickly, and that’s my guess.
I remember, during the championship parade in downtown, Patrick O’neil said he was surprised to learn that Dean Lombardi and scouting stuff are staying in the motel for the scouting trip. I was surprised, too. Dean? Staying in the motel 6 or whatever? It was just beyond my imagination cause it would be very destructive if the couple in the next room banging all night long …
Owners, Bettman, players should follow his example. This is a hard time for everyone. Everybody needs to sacrifice and give something up. Players want business class flight and single room stay in the hotel? Sure you can demand it when the economy isn’t this bad but surely not now. Or the team like Maple leafs have the right to fly with business class but surely Yotes need to take Grayhound. Yet they gave Doan a 21 million deal? Come on.
Both sides, give something up already and start with 50/50 split, and see what’s gonna happen to the economy and then talk again. It’s that simple. Do it!

And incidentally: what point are you trying to make by saying we have competitive balance and 7 different cup winners in 7 years(BTW also you’re about to have 7 different cup winners in 8 years). I DON’T WANT your stupid competitive balance!!!! I want the best organization with the best players to win! Is that so hard to understand???? Or should we keep going down the same road? Hey why not just give a point to the loser of a game regardless? They showed up and tried right? Let’s flip a coin for overtime too, it’s faster. And let’s give everyone the identical salary. And if your team has 20 or more goals than someone else you have to give your leading scorer to Columbus so they can have the same record as you.

@HockeyNerd, I intensely dislike these negotiating tactics of waiting out the other side.
NHL: “Well you have nothing better to offer so I’m just going to sit here until my face turns blue”
NHLPA: “Fine, well I’m just going to stand on my head until you give into what I want!”
Unfortunately, these are the only tactics that seem to work. The players are most likely to cave in (again) and the games lost will be for nothing. In the end, we are the collateral damage in this games.

just thinking out loud here but could this lockout and stoppage of regular play be some sort of (agreed) marketing scheme to push popularity of NHL hockey in Europe?
If players head over to the various European leagues in masses and European fans are exposed to some nifty NHL-caliber hockey talent, might that not actually help push the NHL into these markets?
I live in Germany and since two years I subscribe to NHL Game Center but, honestly, I don’t know anyone else who does…
When I was watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs last May and I simultaneously tuned in to some World Cup coverage I could not believe my eyes, so huge was the difference: slow, sluggish hockey, botched plays, empty seats. I remember thinking why on earth a hockey fan would settle for something so obviously inferior to the real thing (NHL). I believe, the NHL has quite some room for marketing itself in Euroe – just like the NBA has done for many years now. Sending a few of the premier stars over here – even if only for a few months – could well help in that effort.
GO KINS!

As much as i agree with that, at the end of the day everyone, fans, owners and players would all be losing. It has to get done, and i think both sides know that there has to be a season. Owners are doing a good job with the ‘care a less about a lockout’ bargaining chip, and the players this time aren’t buying it, yet. Both sides are still using the first game of the season as a real deadline.
But yeah, all these guys (owners and players) are going to get there money one way or the another, the millions of dollars and percentages to players/owners all trickles down so slightly throughout the tree.

Penner, despite his playoff heroics is a good threat on the third line if he doesn’t view this as a demotion. I hope that management emphasize third and fourth lines are expected to score as well. I still think the Kings have enough talent to have all four lines looking to put the puck behind the net yet have agressive forecheckers in Stoll, Fraser, Nolan, Clifford, etc.
These opportunistic cats have demonstrated awesomeness in not only scoring a goal, but how the goal was scored. Take for example, Kyle Clifford’s breakaway goal last season that Scuds assisted on. I didn’t know Kyle had those “Justin Williams hands,” yet he’s soooo freakin young!!!

1. We all love the LA Kings.
2. We all want NHL hockey to be played ASAP.
Let’s not turn our frustrations on one another. Like I said earlier, I vote with my wallet to compensate for the aggravation these bozos (both sides) are causing on me and my family.
GO KINGS GO!!

Well, for the second week in a row, my Raiders did not look very good, so it may be a long NFL season for me. But thank goodness there are my beloved Stanley Cup Champion LA Kings, my one ray of sunshine, so I am so looking forward to… this… upcoming…season… oh, yeah, right. How about those LA Sparks?

Any true hockey fan is gonna watch hockey as soon as it gets going again. Even if there are only 40 games this season I’ll still be cheering for my kings. BUT…I’ll definitely not be going to any games. Gotta make the NHL pay for this lockout somehow.

Can we put the owners and the PA in a room and not let them leave until they’ve reached a deal?
We’ll feed them, of course.

well here we sit in another lockout. Been there, done that!
Thank you both NHL and NHLPA
may you both rot in hell!
sorry, but just tired of the SOS with both groups. Every contract negotiation comes complete with a lockout.
It’s sad but they know we’ll all come back when it’s done.
There’s still time to work out a deal but these two(Bettman/Fehr)haven’t figured out that the only way to make a deal is to negotiate. Are they waiting for opening day to resume negotiations?
How pathetic that they can’t come to a resolution on how to slice up billions of $$ for each.
I was one of those people hoping that the fans wouldn’t boo Bettman when he handed out the cup..On 2nd thoughts every fan should have thrown something on the ice towards Bettman and hit him in his head and knock some sense into him.
I’m speaking out of frustration..allow me to rant please.
See you all next season..maybe!

Here I sit this morning, wearing my Frozen Fury t-shirt from last year, still pondering the biggest question for all season ticket holders – Option #1 or Option #2. Sounds like a scene from a Doomsday movie.

@Sebastian, What? The white rabbit said to takethe red pill! Paging Dr. Morpheus, paging Dr. Morpheus!
This is how low we have gone – instead of talking about training camp and debating that Toffoli should replace Kopi on the first line, we are reduced to Matrix referrals. I just wish the Architect would explain the concep of “probabilities” to the life forms known as Fehr and Bettman.

Ontario Reign season is starting up soon! To hell with these knuckleheads arguing over who gets a bigger slice of a couple of billion dollars.
Come on out to Ontario and support these guys making $26.5k a year. A few play for a shot at the big club, but most just play because they freaking love the game!
No bad seat in that arena and no TV time outs.
LET’S GO REIGN!
