I’m really glad the pictures don’t show the players happy and having a good time. I was at ground zero several years ago, and people were smiling and happy as they were getting their pictures taken, and it was very off-putting. I didn’t feel right to take a picture of the hole in the ground where so many died from an evil act.

I guess the Kings need to take the Cup with us to Lower Manhattan when we hit Broadway to fave the Rangers @ MSG!! Hope they but Ace and Mark’s name on the Cup!!

I love this team. I hope they can get a deal worked out. Aside from the Kings winning the cup it has been a terrible couple of years for me and hockey makes it worth while.

pti quoted crosby saying “it’s not looking good” about the season starting on time…

i think he’s probably one of the most optimistic peeps in pro sports – maybe not ay a tebow-level…but if he sating that, it’s time for us to start making new plans for the winter….

Great pic!! Nice gesture by the players and a sobering experience I’m sure.

The owner/player reps should walk thru Ground Zero before they head back to negotiations then maybe they will find some clarity and common ground before they mess it all up for us fans!

will your blog stop if there is no CBA come Sept 15th? How does all this affect you and your job with the Kings?

ps: Thanks for sharing these pictures!

It only impacts me in the sense that there are no practices/games to cover, which is a fairly significant impact of course. But beyond that, all is normal.

    And certainly, no problem…

@Rich Hammond, Four words: “BURGER WARS: LOCKOUT EDITION”

Father’s Office, Umami Burger, In N’ Out, The Bowery and the foodtruck Grill’em All Heavy Metal Burgers are my votes.

Seriously, I hope this issue gets settled soon. It definitely looms as a damper on the Kings’ Cup win and the upcoming season.

And yes, the pictures and thoughts are warm and wonderful. Thank you for posting them. I was in NYC for Game 5 of the Finals, and I visited the 9/11 Memorial on the Friday before the game.

@mash-ola, The hamburger wars will never be settled. To many tribal factions to ever come under a single banner of peace. It also may not be fair to have some go head to head like in Boxing some weight classes or price ranges my need to be inserted. I know very few have or will ever try it, but it is my understanding that in Vegas there is a $1000 Cheeseburger.

    mash-ola Reply:

@luc20rules, I dunno about a $1000 Cheeseburger, but I’m sure that if someone wants to shell out that much mulah for a burger, some place will make it.

When I went to Vegas for the KISS / Motley Crue concert at Mandalay Bay last month, I went to the Burger Bar and had a $60.00 burger. It consisted of an Australian Kobe-style patty, a patty of seared foie gras, black truffles and a wine/truffle reduction. It was pretty good (and the lettuce and tomato and pickle came for free!). A very good burger: rich, hearty and indulgent. Not something I’d want to do every time I have a burger, but really good nonetheless.

You’ll have to sell me on that $1000.00 cheeseburger, though. I think I might be more apt to trying that pulled pork burger from Carls Jr that has those two hot girls eating them… mmmmmm… burger girls….

    luc20rules Reply:

@mash-ola, I know the add you speak of and think the girls are pretty hot, but I must say calling them burger girls does take some of the shine off. LOL
As for the Vegas $1000 cheeseburger it may be the one you had and it is just called that the discription sound like what I heard.

    luc20rules Reply:

@mash-ola, You must eat like a popper not to have had the accompaning $4,940 bottle of Bordeaux. LOL

    @Rich Hammond,

if i may be so bold to suggest profiles of peeps who are peripheral casualties of a lock-out – the concessionaires, the part-time workers of many different generations, the local businesses affect, long-time season tix holders take, jim and bob’s take, nick and darryl’s take, players, coaches…etc…

obviously, there’s a lot of human interest stories to go around…

i would be surprised if you didn’t find yrself as busy as usual with all that could be reported and said during what appears to be an imminent lock-out – i’d say late november, things will be resolve….that’s my guest…..

i know the nhl is getting paid by nbc regardless if there’s a season or not…

    BUT…

the nhl doesn’t want to lose the winter classic – one of their biggest crossover attractions – not to mention, most expensive events…

and if you really think about it we should look at that time period as do or die….

Its obvious Brown was very moved. I remember from another post that he had an inlaw Chistopher Bordoni(wife’s cousin) that served our country and was killed in combat in Afganistan. Brown’s day with the cup was mostly a fundraiser for families and troops injured or killed. Story below.

Thanks for this installment, Rich Hammond. A few weeks back, Rich posted a lengthy engagement of reader questions with well considered responses. Logical, economical, but many words, to be sure. In this post, Rich has gone photojournalist– powerfully so, as far as Kings faithful are concerned.
Nice to see Dustin Brown, the man at the center and beating heart of most Kings’ games, again at the center of things that matter.
Now let’s get this CBA conundrum under control and bring on some seriously NHL hockey.

Hey Rich, just a question… how will the lockout affect employees like you? If it’s just a player lockout, I’m assuming you guys aren’t necessarily locked out… just maybe less work to do?

Will you keep us updated (as much as you can, obviously) on the whereabouts and goings on of the players?

    [Reply]

  23. SLG1013 says:

According to ESPN, Voynov will play in the KHL if there is a lockout…

KHL club Traktor Chelyabinsk will add two proven NHL players if the NHL locks its players out tomorrow, as expected.

One of those players is Slava Voynov, the Russian defenseman who, as a rookie, helped the Los Angeles Kings win their first Stanley Cup last season. The other is former Nashville Predators and Montreal Canadiens left wing Andrei Kostitsyn, according to IIHF communications director Szymon Szemberg.

Voynov played for Traktor from 2006-08, but Kostitsyn’s situation is far more interesting. The 27-year-old Belarusian is a free agent, and signing a long-term pact with the club could mean his NHL career is over for good.

I was born & raised in NYC but have lived in SoCal the last 30 years. I recently got back from spending a month in NYC and I took my first trip to ground zero. It was emotional for me & I did think of Ace & Mark while I was there. I found myself proud of the fact that NY is building a new tower at the site & thought it looked beautiful. Many of my photos from my visit resemble the ones posted by Rich.

I’m thankful that the Kings took the time to visit the memorial & to Rich for relating the story.

I havent been to New York since 9/11. I was their in 1996 to watch the Kings play. I took time to vist the towers and were in aw. I will never forget that feeling or the site. I was sadden as a loyal kings fan with the loss of Mark and Ace. Im glad to see the team remember in their honer by visiting the site. I think it would also been nice to have the stanley cup their too as they were a part of the kings past that lead them to a championship

This is a great thing the Kings’ players did. It was heartfelt gesture to worthy individuals by an emotionally affected bunch of gentlemen. These were incredible pictures taken at a sacred location. It looks as if the players were really touched by just being there at the monument. You could see the emotion on the faces of the champions. It just confirms the idea that hockey player are true gentlemen. JUST INCREDIBLE!!!

@C=Hud, Agree 100% and I am as proud of the Kings that paid tribute to their fallen comrades as I am the magnificent team that won The Cup.

    paulhb Reply:

@C=Hud, What’s hard to grasp from any photos taken at ground zero is that it’s truly a madhouse. Whenever you go there are thousands upon thousands of people there so the emotional vibe is magnified exponentially. I didn’t know until I went but you actually need tickets to visit the memorial & there’s a limit to the size of the party you can bring. Tickets are free of course. Plus in the area surrounding ground zero are thousands more visitors + the construction workers who are building the new freedom tower + all the people who normally work in the neighborhood. While each visitor’s experience at the site is very private & personal, it’s also a shared experience on a massive scale. I’ve never experienced anything like it & I’m sure all the Kings would say the same.
