Luc and Stacia Robitaille host Cup event

The Stanley Cup rink tour is taking place today at various sites, but if you missed it, here’s another opportunity on horizon. Echoes of Hope, the charity founded by Luc Robitaille and his wife, Stacia, is holding a Stanley Cup event Saturday night at the South by Vizio bar in Santa Monica (3001 Wilshire Blvd.). The charity’s website says that for a $20 donation at the door (with all proceeds going to Echoes of Hope), entrants get access to food and drink specials, a silent auction, a raffle and a photo opportunity with the Stanley Cup. For more information, click here.

Incidentally, I had not previously heard of “South,” but it’s listed as “L.A.’s first 3D sports bar.” I’ll spend the next few minutes pondering the image of fans walking around drinking and wearing 3D glasses…

It’s hard to say what the situation at the door will be like on Saturday and whether presale tickets are absolutely necessary. I haven’t been able to see the cup all summer (well, since game 6, at least) and purchased presale tickets so I won’t miss this opportunity! I can’t wait!

@Reba, You should have just shown up, that’s what I did. My girlfriend and I got there at about 10:20 (only had to park a block away too), the line to get in wasn’t bad at all, was standing near the front went Luc came by with the cup it was cool. We had to wait a long time to get the picture though, we somehow got screwed with a ticket in the 800′s, the guy in front of us had one in the 600′s… I guess we got a new roll or something I don’t know. It wasn’t till 1 AM when we finally got our picture, but it was worth it. Got to talk to Luc for a little bit, some pictures with Bailey, lot of fun. Getting inside wasn’t hard at all, then it was just drinking some beers watching the Championship DVD and waiting for your number to be called.

pre sale tickets put you in a separate line than the $20 ones they sell at the door, allows you to skip the line and get in faster. This place isn’t super big, it will get crowded. As far as the 3-D thing: it’s a gimmick, they are sponsored by Vizio and just have some of their 3D tv’s on the wall, thats really about it

There are fans who watch every game and root the team on tv (ALL games broadcast) and can not afford the hefty ticket and parking prices of the NHL. I have been a Kings fan since 1970 but have yet to be at a live Kings game at Staples or the Forum since 91, because at those times I lived out of state. Lately I have been out of work for two years so going live is not an option unless someone gives me their tickets. I am glad that people are getting a chance to have pics taken with the cup but please, just because some of you are season ticket holders does not mean that you guys are TRUE fans. Just means you guys have money to spend and have enough to pay your rents, your kids college funds, etc. True fans came out for the parade and rally which came to over 250 or so thousand…..yeah some maybe bandwagon fans but some may have came out of the closet too……

Nor does it mean we have money to spend, I budget in hockey tickets and not other things. There are a lot of things i don’t do so that i can attend games. If I am reading it correctly or maybe this is how I feel, seeing the cup in bars and other establishments and not having the opportunity is quite annoying.

Hope that everyone that wants to see Stanley gets their chance!!

I know I have posted this before, but the more info I get the more I think the players should just offer a 1 year CBA excepting 46% split with last years NHL HRR not the new one the NHL made up for their offer and a one year rollback of the Salary Cap to 61 mil min cap of 40 mil, but put in provisions that the following will take place during the season.
    1. Abitrator review the CBA and offer a resolution the 2 sides could vote on June 30, 2013
    2. Full discloser of 3 years of NHL HRR from an independent auditor
    3. Independent Auditor studies of teams losing money and if the min cap should stay perminately lowered and if some teams need to be relocated also researching viable cities for relocation.
    4. 5% rollback returned to players if HRR increases by 10% this year.
    5. The 1 year CBA will not be the expected start point of negotiations should either side or both reject the abitrators proposed CBA. The abitrators proposed CBA should be the start point for future negotiations.
    6. With each ticket purchased fans should be able to vote whether to FIRE Bettman. (In my dreams)

Why do I think this is the only resolution, because neither side will blink, and the owners are saying they are losing money and the players really don’t believe it. If there is even a 10 game lockout the players will loss the 11% anyway. Sorry all just letting off some steam and reason to a situation that is egos, distrust, anamosity, and unreasonable behavior.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@luc20rules, Bettman is just the face of the owners. My sense is the owners are now bullying the players and have gotten greedy about it. The owners have less to lose this time around because ESPN is long gone and replaced by the Walmart of national sports media, NBC.

Just can’t buy the fact the owners are crying over a contract THEY insisted on after bragging about how well the league is doing over the last several years. Now they want the players to pay for their owners who havn’t done well? Players are getting too much money? THE OWNERS ARE THE ONES PLAYING THEM. Unbelievable. “Hey players, we want to give you less money because we the owners found ways to pay them more”

The one comment that upset me the most was when Bettman said we aren’t afraid of how the fans might react because they’re the best fans in the world. In my head I heard because our fans are suckers who will come running back regardless of how greedy we’ve become.

    \end rant

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

@KC23, Agree with you on Bettman being a mouth piece, but there is just something about Bettman from day one that made me want to slug him in the face, and that is very unlike me. IMHO it would be easier to take for the NHLPA if Bettman wasn’t so condescending about how he speaks about NHLPA suggestions for the new CBA. Its just disturbing to think the Kings may not be able to defend the Cup this season.

  19. neil says:

Here is my question….Is it the players job or the owners job to figure out how to help the small market teams???? I dont think its a combo….Settle the players salaries and the caps and let the league fix the problem of small vs. large….

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

@neil, The problem is in a nutshell the NHL has redefined the Hockey Related Revenue(HRR)removed some revenue not sure of the specifics, but as an example lets say the NHLs new HRR says Beer sold at NHL games is no longer Hockey Related Revenue. So Basically even what is considered HRR is by the players estimates %94 of what it would have been last year. Then the NHL does’nt want to do any profit sharing amongst owners, and is just saying these teams are having trouble so we need to roll back player salaries to remedy their losses. I side with the players since they were forced to accept a Salary Cap which would fix all the problems 7 years ago(NHL dictated the terms to the NHLPA), but here we are today with the NHL saying the players need a 26% cut in salary for the NHL to survive and the independent audits where given late and are not convincing to the NHLPA that the salary cuts are justified especially with some teams making lots of money that will just pocket the extra from they’re paycut.

    [Reply]

    Deke'r Reply:

    @luc20rules, ….hooked on phonics?….

    FKA PakiFro Reply:

    @neil,

The small/large problem drives down salaries as some teams spend close to the floor simply due to budget concerns. If the Players get the revenue sharing they want, more money will flow to those teams and ultimately to more players. Right now, a handful of teams spend most of the money on an elite bunch of players. The revenue sharing the players are suggesting will not only redistribute which teams get money, but would also likely close the gap between really high-tier earning players and the lower-tier of players.

The current disparity ultimately leads to an escrow problem. The reason escrow is always negative is because the cap is based on the average annual salary, but the escrow withholding is based on actual money paid to players for that year. So if all the front-loaded deals add up to more than say 60% of revenue, every player (league minimum earners and the Suters and Parises of the league) have to put money back in to the owners pockets.

At the risk of trying to find the bright side to things, if we miss a few games this season (i firmly believe we won’t lose the full season based solely on no facts) I would speculate that it may help the Kings for 2 reasons:

    1) longer offseason = more rest to the team that had the longest season of every other team in NH… well okay tied with the Devils (and NJ had more playoff games)… but you get my drift

    2) one of the harder things for teams who miss training camp is to get their various offensive and defensive systems in place… this may be more pronounced with football than say hockey, but i think it totally favors any team which is brining back the ENTIRE team and most coaches. In other words players use the preseason to get their conditioning back, timing with those they know, timing with new players… we would be ahead of most teams

The only con I can think of is that the schedule maaaay be compressed slightly, maybe not as bad as the NBA, and that may wear on teams that travel a lot, but the Kings are young and if anything it may cut down on some of the cross country trips

    [Reply]

This is a sport, not life or death. If they want to kill the sport as we know it then they are a bunch of dumbasses. With the Winter Classic, HBO, NBC Sports Networks, NHL Center Ice, Stanley Cup Playoffs, and many exciting regular season games all these on the line, for the love of money!!! Now we all know that with any business you are going to have issues and I’m sure that both sides have very valid points on their positions, but why screw everybody? Gone are the days of playing a sport just for the love of the sport. Our nations teachers are getting screwed daily yet many continue to show up and teach our kids. Sacrifice is needed from both sides, but it seems as nothing is being done. We are going to reach the deadline without an agreement and it’s going to carry over into the regular season and after the players don’t have training camp and miss the meaningless games of October, Nov, and some of Dec, we will have an agreement and the Winter Classic will be played. We will have half a season and defending our Cup will be tarnished. The whole thing sucks and most of all it is us the fan who suffer. I don’t want to go through it again, but my team finally has won the Cup and I would love to see them defend it to the fullest. Nice, free event and I personally thanked Mr. Jack Ferreira for holding the event for us fans. I didn’t think the chances of winning a raffle yesterday at any of the local rinks was a guarantee of getting near the Cup, so Ontario was the best bet. I didn’t touch it, though; I didn’t win it personally so I didn’t feel I deserved to touch it–being next to it and having my team win it was good enough for me.

Albeit, we didn’t win the cup with this goal as the Spaniards won the World Cup, but you get to see the announcers celebrate in the same fashion

The Star Trek crew continues to try and help the CBA negotiations:

    Kirk – “Spock-I-need-to-know-more-about-the-two-sides-and-the-history-of-this-war”
Spock – “The current struggle is a continuation of a dispute between two parties that occurred on the planet Earth during the 20th and 21st centuries. Both sides had everything they really needed, but wanted more. Similar to many other wars fought on Earth, this was about greed, a most illogical emotion.
    Kirk – “But-Spock-who-is-creating-the-conflict? Is-this-A-Klingon-or-Romulan-trick?
Spock – “No Captain, this is localized problem. One side, knwown as the “Players”, is represented by their envoy known as “The Fehr.” He has been known to lead other groups to war and near destruction of their world. He enjoys power, big lunches and attention by what they call the “Media”
    Kirk – “Fehr-looks-like-a-Tartilian-Grock-from-Argu 4. Who-is-the-other-group?”
Spock – “They are known as the “Owners.” They are represented by an envoy knwon as “The Bettman.” Some say “The Bettman” believes that he is the reincarnation of a 19th century Earth tyrant known as “Napolean.” He is also known to the people as “Buuuuuuuuu” since that is what they chant when he appears at public events.
    Kirk – “Oh-I-see. He-looks-like-a-short-Romulan-with-that-round-head-and-pointy-ears-and-vacant-look-in-his-eyes.
Spock – “Captain, your comparison is almost logical, as he is also known to turn green after imbibing large quantities of alcoholic beverages.
Chekov – “Captin, ve hov a wessel appwoaching, vorp twee point fo.”
    Kirk- “Go-to-red-alert-Uhura-open-a-channel”
Smith – “This is Mike Smith, Captain of the NHLPA ship Hack-A-Lot. My crew and I demand that you not intefere with the CBA negotiations.”
    Kirk – “And-if-I-refuse?”
Smith – “We will set our super goalie stick to “kill” instead of “disable” and aim for your head instead of the back of your knee.”
    Kirk – “Uhura-off-screen. What-do-you-think-Spock?
Spock – “I do not trust them. After studying the “Players,” I recognize several standing with Smith. The one on the left is Ryan Clowe, a known cheater supported by The Bettman. The one that is crying is known as Doan, who has emotional control issues and was also protected by The Bettman. The third one is named Burrows, who is known as a “diver” and fails to respect the national anthems of other nations. Overall, an unsavory group, but also a group with no backbone. I would recommend vaporization.”
    Kirk – “Mr-Chekov-warm-up-the-Vicks-Vapo-Rub-gun. Uhura-back-on-screen. Captain-Smith-we-respectfully-refuse-your-offer-and-if-you-attack-our-ship-we-will-have-Ensign-Penner-vaporize-you-with-our-Vicks-Vapo-Rub-gun.
Smith – “You have Penner with you? My god, the next thing you will tell me is that you have Dustin Brown on board too.”
    Kirk – “We-do-have-Brown-on-board-preparing-to-beam-over-to-your-ship.”
Smith – “Someone tell Henrick, or is that Daniel? to stop crying and let him onto the bench. Ok Kirk, you win, we can’t beat Penner and Brown. But we will meet again some day when the odds will be in our favor, and lying and cheating and diving will prevail!!”
Spock – Interesting, several of the players had their illegal actions supported by The Bettman. It is most illogical that he would support them when he represents the Owners. Unless…
    Kirk – “Oh-my-god-Spock-do-you-think-there-is-something-evil occurring-in-the-negotiations?”

Took my pic with the Cup last Thursday at Pickwick Ice in Burbank. What a day! I brought my 8 year old daughter with me and we wore our matching Kings jerseys. Although she was happy to see Stanley up close and personal, the real coup de gras was that my daughter got to meet Bailey! She was beyond excited, just jumping up and down and laughing and screaming. It was priceless. I took several pictures of them together which are all blurry because she couldn’t stand still. When I was finished taking their picture, Bailey kissed my daughter on the head, and she has not stopped talking about it since.

That moment with Bailey is what makes the Kings such a great organization. My daughter doesn’t understand much about the game of hockey and how it is played, but she LOVES being at Staples Center and she LOVES Bailey. Having that sort of short but meaningful interaction with her favorite (non) player could be the moment that she becomes a hockey and Kings fan for life.

FWIW, when the PA system began to play “We Are the Champions” and I saw Stanley hoisted overhead, my eyes welled up and it was June 11, 2012 all over again. Holy crap-we won the freakin’ CUP!

What I mean is, if we signed up for 5 pm, can we get there at 4:45 pm (ie not miss too much work) or is it like the Sport Chalet and other events where you have to be there hours early? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

I am a frequent South attendee in West LA. It’s a good bar, you’ll like it. But it can get pretty packed and the music can get a little loud. It’s a tad confused thinking it’s a club when it’s actually just a sports bar with lots of good TVs.

Way OT here, but felt I should relate my experience last night.

I watched “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” last night on HBO, a story of a young boy’s dark journey to finding closure when his father is killed in the 9/11 attack in New York. There was some discussion of this boy’s pain of loss and his struggle to move on in life even though he bears a terrible scar.

And then a card dropped in the memory banks. I thought of “Ace” Bailey and Mark Bavis. And I remembered the powerful photo of a Kings Stanley Cup Champions cap, set between their names, forever etched in the Ground Zero Memorial.

    http://nymag.com/daily/sports/2012/06/one-kings-fans-tribute-at-the-911-memorial.html

I choked up. Teared up. I was unable to speak for a couple of minutes because of my emotional response. To Dave Krasne, NYC Kings fan, I again want to thank you for your thoughtful gesture. It was a simple reminder of the tricky balance between the great joy and terrible sorrow of life, in this case, condensed into a single photograph.

If there is any justice in the world, Mark & “Ace” will likewise be memorialized on Lord Stanley’s Cup. And their spirit will make the raising of that trophy over the heads of countless future NHL Champions just a little bit lighter.

    RIP “Ace” and Mark.

@IceGuy, Thanks for telling us about that Ice. Sometimes, most of us get real busy in life and we have a tendency to forget things that happen in the past because its “old news” or not relevant, or whatever the reasoning is with some people.

The fact is, tomorrow is Tuesday September 11th, which is exactly when it happened back in 2001, and I will never forget where I was, and what I was doing that morning in santa Ana.

Thanx for the reminder about Ace and Mark, I gotta admit, it nearly slipped my mind as well.

another day goes by…and we are no closer to an agreement….

5 days to go…and then the nhl becomes a macrocosm of the economic strife, labor disputes and flat-out pessimism about what’s happening to this country and how it affects all of our lives….

    this is a lil’ bit off-topic, but….

politics aside, this country and its inhabitants can do A LOT better than we are now…

my generation grew up to understand that a fair day’s worth of work qualified for a fair day’s worth of pay….as the players and owners squabble on power, leverage, revenue sharing and direction, there are millions and millions of us who wake up every day to find a way to survive and better themselves…opportunities are slim these days for the rest of us whom are not professional athletes…

it goes to show you, for you and me and everyone else, life is not promised…life doesn’t preclude you to failure…or automatically grants you success…you can have the best of intentions and maximize yr efforts, but they could fail…unfortunately, there are winners and losers in life…

in my world, the person and their individual qualities and attributes trump salaries/money 100% of the time….

which leads me back to the nhl….

if we are to believe that these peeps are generally concern about doing the right thing, a deal would have been done already and/or close to being resolved…

but as of sept. 15, the nhl will become a mirror image of what this country has become – black and white…red and blue…the haves and have-nots….

everybody professes about how any deal needs to be equitable on both sides…and there lies the comparison to our own lives – we all want a fair deal – both in hockey, at our jobs (if yr lucky to have one), and in life….

what seemed to be a given years ago in this land of so-called unlimited opportunity, has now befallen to a dog eat dog world, where everyone is just trying to get their own slice rather than looking at the bigger picture and make decisions and agreements for the betterment of life…

but the nhl is now heading to a familiar spot once again…and when we are continuously told to learn by yr mistakes and try not to repeat them, the league is doing the exact opposite…and falling into a line with the rest of us – unsure of the future and how it will all play out….

is it time for these owners and players to look again at the 3 year-old, dying of an incurable cancer and trying to live like each day is their last…?

do we need to take a quick walk from staples center to 4th and wall street to see how many homeless are living on the street….?

do they need to ask the millions and millions of educated, capable and willing peeps who are still out of work…?

here they are – at center stage – 5 days away from an “imaginary” deadline – truth is, the last week of september really is doomsday for the season starting on time…and they are no way close to a deal…

    sports imitating life…

where have you gone, joe dimaggio..? (indeed)….

this is live blogging – there is no rehearsal….

    thus, the silly typos…
