The Kings announced that Jonathan Quick underwent a “minor surgical procedure” today to repair a disc frament and an inflammatory cyst that had formed in his back. The team said that Quick will begin rehab in approximately one week and a full recovery is expected, with the recovery time a minimum of six weeks.
[UPDATE: Just had a quick chat with assistant general manager Ron Hextall. Hextall said Quick and the Kings had been aware of the back issue since the start of summer, but that therapy, and not a surgical procedure, had initially been recommended. Hextall said that the recovery, through therapy, ``wasn't coming along quite like we hoped, so the next step was to go this route.'' Hextall said Quick should be ready for full activity ``sometime around'' the scheduled start of training camp, but noted that every player's recovery time is different. That also assumes, of course, that training camp will start on time...]
it’s a good thing the season won’t be starting on time… rest up Quickie, YOU my friend might be the defending STANLEY CUP CHAMPION for a long, long time!

Maybe it’s my intensely blase WCB talking but the Winter Classic would be a disapponting target to aim the opening of the season for.
And I know that is not exactly what you’re saying.
But it would seem such a shame and a sham for there to be just a half a 2012/13 season.
Especially as the Kings are playing through Champions and you’d surely want to enjoy all 246 periods of the Cup defending season, not just a phoney quasi-substitute.

@Stuart, Why did he waited so long to do this medical procedure. I know we have a very good back up but he should of done it sooner and make sure you start the season fully recovered. If the season starts on time, let’s hope, that means he will miss a training camp and that’s never a good think. You should always look ahead and don’t put your team that very much relying on you in that kind of situation.

Bettman seemed insulted that the 76,000 page report made by the NHL was not taken in good faith. All along this process I have hoped some how Bettman’s colossal ego did not derail the season. It would seem to me that with the multitude of Lawyers at these negotiations a lawyer could draft an agreement where players are to pay rollbacks based on the new CBA for this season and continue to play. See link below for Bettman’s thoughts on playing through CBA negotiations.

It’s like threatening your kids that they’d better be good to get their Christmas presents – and then when the poor souls finally get their bikes and video games they’re forced to go directly to the pawn shop and bring the pennies back for the family coffers.
My Uncle Gary would never knowingly do (stuff) like that.

@neil,
What do you expect from this bunch of ****head owners. The owners group sent the players association a new contract proposal limiting the maximum term of a contract to five years at the same time they are handing out contracts to free agents in the 10, 12 and 14 year range.
The owners, are so disfunctional they need to use a contract with the players to protect themselves from themselves.
Anyone that believes this owners group will come to an agreement with the players must be under seven years old (the last lock out). History, indicates the owners prefer self inflicted wounds. There is no way the owners end up better off with the season shortened or cancelled that they do by reaching an agreement by September 15th.
Our family have been season ticket holders for thirty plus years. Thank god the Kings won the Stanley Cup this year. If a labor dispute cancels another season we will likely give up our seats.
Shame on the owners.

first of all, no back or disc “procedure” is simple and/or non-worrisome or “minor”….
secondly, there’s no doubt in my mind now that if the kings knew this right after they won the cup, bernier wasn’t/isn’t going anywhere, thus, making allllllll the bernier trade talk previously/currently discussed fodder for the fireplace…
what is now somewhat of an issue/concern is that quick is signed now for 10 years…
i want a healthy quick to be a king for life….but any contract over 5 or 6 years is a gamble…and, imo, no contract should be longer than 5 years anyway (that’s just the way i feel)…
best case scenario – quick comes back healthy and up to speed, displaying all his capabilities and skill…
worst case scenario – rick dipietro….

No Kings fan wants to hear this. Except for Bernier. Did he pat Quick’s back a little too hard when he won the Conn Smythe? I wouldn’t put it past him. I hope they don’t push him too soon and this becomes a chronic issue. Hold onto Bernier and don’t push for Quick to come back until he is FULLY recovered and then some. It will be better in the long run.

@Token, I believe Bernier playing every game will do just that. I remember the 2009-10 year when he was unbeatable my theory is he has never been suited for spot duty. Some guys can some guys can’t be as good as a backup. The one year Bernier played regularly in the AHL and was only brought up to start NHL games he was spectacular. If he plays the first 12 games and gets regular work in the preseason lookout. It will also help that he is playing behind the best 6 dmen on one team, and 3 of the best 4 of the best 2 way Centers in the league and forwards that have had it drilled in to them to play D responsible hockey for 3+ years. Quicker gets back and we trade Bernier at any point for near full value, or just keep him as insurance for the year and trade his rights just before July 1st next year.

Backs are a tough thing to deal with.
Given that it is removing a cyst or a fragment is better than a chronic slipped or bulging disk.
Here’s hoping he gets it taken care of, as his lower body and back flexibility is a major reason he is such an outstanding goalie.
There certainly would not have been a Cup without him between the pipes.
I think in his own amazingly athletic way, he is the goaltending version of the Great One and that we should give him a nickname – The Great Quick (or GQ).

@King Cobra, My thoughts exactly except I think you have to say the same about Fehr. What I don’t get is that don’t they realize what a second lockout will mean for the sport as whole. There will be no profits to share if they keep this up.
I would say that if the season gets shortened most people will forget about this whole issue pretty quickly. If they lose the entire season to a extended lockout that is different story. I think that would be big blow to the NHL as a whole at a time when it was really starting to gain a bigger audience.
I wish these guys could see past the green on the end of there nose.

@BringBackButchGoring,
A 43% gross profit margin is healthy for any business. Considering the players are the product AND the employees, the teams should have plenty to go around for management, coaches, support staff, etc. The real problem is that there is insufficient revenue sharing so 57% for the Flyers is much different than for the Predators. The in-fighting between the owners over revenue sharing is probably more to blame than the NHLPA not fielding an offer (yet). They don’t want to share revenue with each other so they’d rather roll back players salaries. I don’t blame them because they’re business men (read: jerks). The current CBA is their deal, they should modify how THEY are effected by it, not how the players should give back even more to them. And I think that’s why Fehr was brought in. He did a hell of a job getting MLB owners to set up a solid revenue sharing plan and if he can do that in the NHL as well, both sides will ultimately be better off.

@King Cobra,
Isn’t it the owners — NOT the players, who’ve already agreed to keep playing under the current CBA until a new one is drafted — who are threatening to close down the season?
Back in 2004-5 there was a lotta fussing about players being overpaid spoiled brats. But that banana oil ain’t working this time around. If this season tanks it’s the owners — and the owners ALONE — who will be responsible for it.
I’m still wondering why the owners refuse to continue under the existing CBA. They were, after all, the ones who wrote it, the ones who danced a jig when they forced it on the players, the ones who boasted of their complete and utter triumph over the union.
Yet now the same guys who drafted that contract are hollering how “unfair” it is to their own interest.
Hammond won’t let me express my opinion of these guys in the only language they deserve. But the rest of you know how I feel.

@King Cobra, Really he’s just a puppet whose strings are being pulled by 30 owners, who are the real cause of this mess. Here are the nicest things I can say about those owners:
1) They (or their GMs) throw millions of dollars to every player in site, than they cry that salaries are too high.
2) They will not stop tinkering with the rules of a perfectly good game until every team is 41-0-41. Case in point: they voted down 3 points for a regulation win. Hey why not just give every team 1 point in the standings no matter what? They showed up and tried, right?
3) They care not one iota for the sport and whether we play the 2012-2013 season or not.
4) They could care less about actual and fair negotiating. If we don’t play in 2012-2013, we don’t. Who cares? They will stubbornly hold on to their “best offer” until (not IF) the players take it.
5) Its their team, so who cares if players get fair revenues or not? After all it’s the players who have the skills and play thru injuries and make the sport what it is. The owners contribution is to run the sport into the ground, so they are entitled to more revenues than the players, right? Only fair.
6) Twice this happened before, and once an entire season was lost so naturally they learned nothing at all from it.
Yes, my blood pressure IS going up…..

@HockeyNerd, Ok, I’ll take the underdog position and somewhat support the owners who carry ALL the risk of owning a franchise. They are the one’s that put 170 million on the line and carry the interest cost. They are the ones that carry all the responsibility to make their monthly loan payment and payroll with no guarantee that they will make money in the future in excess of what they could have made putting the money to more safer uses. The player has zero risks once they sign their 5 year 30 million contracts. They are guaranteed to be millionaires for playing the sport they love. And I disagree that the owners are not hockey fans. I bet there is not one owner that doesn’t love the sport of hockey. So, in that respect, they are the same as you and me. Only f’ing richer mostly because they earned it. I think it is inherant in people to despise the rich because we are not a member of that exclusive club but, in all honesty. they are putting their money to provide us an entertainment that we love. So, why should they not get 50% like in all other sports; they are the ones takng 100% of the risk. Personally, I love AEG; their committment to the Kings brought us the Stanley Cup. Ok, time to hate me…

@BringbackbutchGoring, Yes, the owners are running a buissiness and a buissiness needs to earn a profit. We all understand that. But a buissiness also has its customers, in this case “the fans” and just like running a store or restaurant if you treat your employees (“the players”) or the customers like dirt your bottom line is going to be affected. Good managers learn from this and make the needed changes. Bad managers don’t. And to top it all off the analogy (sorry for one again!) breaks down if there is a labor stoppage — we cannot shop for the same product or eat at another restaurant. If we want to see a high level of hockey the NHL is it. Morally and legally the NHL owners can do what they want — which is exactly what happens. In practice, it’s “bad buissiness”. And yes it IS POSSIBLE to 1) keep the fans happy 2) keep the players happy and 3) make tons of profit all at the same time. Other sports do it, and this is the BEST sport in
the world!
Your turn.
And no I don’t hate you

@Nerd, It’s also possible to bankrupt yourself (Phoenix, NJ, etc) and many of the small market clubs have to stay near the salary floor in order to not bankrupt themsleves. I’ll just say it must be a fine line between staying at the salary floor and keeping the fans and players happy. I’m for more profit sharing between teams so we can have different SC champions each year (after the Kings Dynasty, of course)

here’s an interesting idea, how about a player rental system? Like allow teams that make the playoffs rent a maximum of two players from teams that did not make the playoffs. The renting teams would have to either pay money or send draft picks to the other team. Of course the player being rented would have the right to veto the deal. This could benefit the league multiple ways, non-competitive teams can keep their star players and will be given pieces to build a competitive team in the future, the NHL will gain some playoff viewership from the fans of the non-competitive teams, and it gives players like Shane Doan, who want to stay in the same place their whole career, a better chance at winning the cup even if their team decides to go on a rebuild.

And who cares anymore about performing your best to carry your team to the playoffs? Now suddenly you can just play as selfishly as you want, if your cherry picking costs your team the playoffs, who cares, a playoff team will pick you up!
We need LESS parity in the league, not more.

it’s his day with the cup…he can do whatever he wants with it…we don’t know the reasons why these peeps weren’t invited…and, quite frankly, it really doesn’t matter much to me…
i’m not really sure why peeps feel players “owe” them something after they accomplish a great feat…i don’t want to sound cold here, but public displays of generosity, gratitude, homage, tribute, etc. to the peeps that helped make quick who he is today are not required by him – however appropriate you or i or anyone else feel that quick should be everything to everyone – an impossible expectation to accomplish for anyone for that matter – i’m cool with quick doing the things he wanted to do with it….
goalies are odd creatures to begin with…there is no doubt about quick’s nhl professionalism and character…maybe he has to mature in other ways off the ice when the press is not around – i don’t know…but chances are that he’s learning as he ascends up the nhl elite ladder…he is number one with a bullet this summer and heading into next season…and i’m willing to give him some latitude as he adjusts to this fact and develops more life experiences along the way…this story is not much of a concern for me….

I have a hard time with crowds…
Not a big fan of the Human race…
Although it does sound like fun and a good crowd…
Have a great time..

@SLIM,
And you live in LA!
Funny, I’m exactly the same, but I’m just going to put on the oxygen mask and go.
Besides, what a compelling group of Insiders to be on the outside of for just one night.
And you know, you haven’t lived until you’ve met @neiltheterrible.
Anyone who has will tell you the same.

@puck73,
I’ll have to be sure not to root for the Marlins, nor wear my Marlins hat from when I coached T-Ball. I haven’t been to Dodger Stadium in 15 years, so I’m really looking forward to it.

@puck73,
Mike thanks again (And wont be the last time I say that) for getting us Blogers together at this event. Have the Dodgers given you an answer yet to maybe Allowing us Bloggers to shoot pucks at the backstop before the game? Or maybe Let us lace up our skates so we can run the bases after the game? Just an Idea I got from attending a Suite event at staples.
Does Dwight Howard get his name on the Cup?

Not surprising with the lockout looming and Quick’s surgery keeping Bernier to put off his trade expectations on hold.

I wonder what Philly is planning to do with their D now that they are going to miss Pronger, Lilja and Meszaros. Since we are their preferred trade partners, I wonder what it would take to get Hartnell; Scuderi and Hickey, maybe?. I honestly think Scuderi slipped a bit last year although he was very good in the playoffs and at the beginning of the year.

andy Reply:

@BringbackbutchGoring, We don’t need to trade for Hartnell because when his contract is up after 2012-13 season he’ll just sign with the Kings anyways. They could be interested in Hickey or maybe Muzzin. A 2nd rounder in 2013 would do it for me.
[Reply]
Drewiske & muzzin for Simmonds
[Reply]
To all those that called for JBernier to be traded should now be glad we didn’t(just in case). I think Bernier is going to get the bulk of the work early on with Quick taking over big time around X-mas. Just my prediction,lets see how it plays out.
[Reply]
Looks like we may be close to a deal…

What would happen if the season never started…that would mean the Kings would be Stanley Cup Champions for two years of celebration…ok…but not worth going without hockey…Oh..Im a season ticket holder so if anyone needs mid-week seats let me know. I can only make them on the weekends. brownjnd@sbcglobal.net
