Dean’s day with the Cup

The Stanley Cup has made its way back East, into the hands of general manager Dean Lombardi. In the photo below, courtesy of Phil Pritchard’s Twitter account — @keeperofthecup — Lombardi shares a moment with his father, Paul, in Springfield, Mass. If you happen to be around Ludlow, Mass., tonight, and find the world-famous El Cid Lounge, there’s a good chance you’ll find Lombardi and the Cup…

Also, click here for a local television station’s report about Lombardi bringing the Cup to a local children’s hospital.

@yetiman_oc, DL once gave it to Penner in the media that if he didn’t improve he would end up batting clean up for the Ed Cid Louge softball team.

To Penner’s credit (and this is what makes me a fan of Penner to this day), he took the media jab in stride and kept on working to improve. Basically laugh at himself with everyone else right in the middle of his divorse mess and long slump on the ice. Then to put in the media about his injury eating pancakes Penner is an amazing individual as far as mental toughness.

You won’t hear be bash Penner again. I have a ton of respect for the guy despite his problems on the ice prior to the end of last season.

    luc20rules Reply:

@variable, Really, I don’t see the fixation on Doan at all. Ok, he would give us like a 1 or 2% boost in our quest for the cup. Maybe 3% if there is an injury and he move up to the top 6, but in that event the chances probably drop 5% first, so it a net -2%. Also long range it means one of our young guys doesn’t play & develop. I think at this moment without Doan the Kings realistically have a 30% chance of winning the cup next year. Things have to go right the top 5 & Quick have to stay relatively healthy and be completely healthy for and thru the playoffs. If that happens it maybe about 50+%. Then there’s momentum if the Kings are healthy and rolling going in kick it up to 60+%.

Am I wrong in recalling that the players caved completely in the last lockout and the owners got pretty much everything they wanted?
So now they’re still losing $$?
It’s insane. Either they’re (Bettman/owners) the worlds biggest bunch of morons, Greedy b@stards, or just have total hatred for the fans of the sport.
How else can you explain losing $$ from a deal you shoved down the players throat previously?

I really didn’t think either side would be stupid enough to allow the league to go thru what it went thru the last time.
Hopefully this is like most negotiations where there’s sabre-rattling until the final hours when they’re under the gun and get a deal done.

What, where’s all the Jonesing for Shane Doan today?

A take on HockeyNerd versus BringBackButchGoring, this blog’s very own World War Doan, if you will:

Forget about Shane Doan. As far as LAK is concerned, Shane Done. Although one never knows how things might shake out injury wise, and Doan would be an outstanding ‘depth insurance gambit’ at worst, there are too many good reasons to say adios, do svidanya, and adieu to Mr Doan.

    1. In a ‘long view,’ he’s just not that _needed_, which IS relevant for several reasons. No need for shortsighted desperation driven by narrow ‘big fish’ delusions, especially since:
    2. Next summer’s UFA class is pretty impressive. That looks like a FAR better time to go shopping with some significant cap room— for the likes of Corey Perry, Jarome Iginla, Ryan Getzlaf– plus Filppula, Morrow, Hartnell (purposely overlooking Alexander Edler since LAK probably won’t be looking so seriously at UFA defensemen). That’s a game Lombardi will want to get serious about, taking a run at Perry or Getzlaf– and man would I _love_ seeing Iginla lacing ‘m up for LA to finish out his career! This isn’t rocket science—at similar ages would you rather have Doan or Iginla? Exactly! A Doan deal cannot be allowed to mess with that. Lombardi’s too smart for that.
    3. Although Brown is 2 years from going UFA, Dean Lombardi’s history would indicate an extension will be in the works next summer or fall, and the captain and heart of the roster is a lock for a nice raise (if other GMs are even considering paying Doan–a more worn and slightly lesser version of Brown–$7M, Brown would certainly be in that range or higher, and Lombardi won’t jeopardize that negotiation –in fact it would be prudent for him to step back and watch how this Doan hoopla works out in a market he’s not influencing; *this and other in-house business may be easily overblow, of course, ‘Gagne’s money’ should be available, some of Penner’s perhaps . . ., cap structure will have changed, so no one knows exactly how that all will work out).
    4. Lombardi’s a patient man who naturally takes the long view, more of a chess player than a ‘heat of the moment’ guy (thank godness!), it’s not likely he’ll be all that smitten with some shiny Shane, just because he’s the biggest fish in a small UFA pond. And so _

Unless Mr Doan would rather don the black and white than make more money elsewhere, he’s Shane Done in LA. What will matter far more than the location of Doan’s next locker, is how healthy the present LAK roster is come March, April, May .. June. As a matter of record, the pieces are there on paper– at the moment. Job One — stay healthy. Nothing trashes a good team’s prospects like injuries do. Anyone recall the Jason Allison infirmary era?

@wes, Great insight on free agency next summer Wes. Man! although many may hate Perry on this site, that guy is dominant! If Dean could sign that guy next summer, wow! What a major coup that would be for this organization!

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@puck73, no thank you! I would rather have Filpulla or even Hartnell… It would be worse than having Bird or McHale, heck, even Ainge, come to the Lakers in their primes. It would never feel right to root for them. :)

@Gustavo, While Kobe still has flurries of greatness. I really think he is only about 86% of his peak ability. It isn’t age its just the abuse that he has taken over the years driving to the rim. His fingers on his shooting hand have been broken or dislocated how many times now? Then there is Howard’s back surgery which is very serious and he is unlikely to start the season(9 months after the surgery)? LAL is not built for the future like LAK are in my opinion. Even with Howard LAL still falls to the Heat in the finals.
