New two-year deal for King

Dwight King, a restricted free agent, has signed a two-year contract with the Kings. King’s return had never been in doubt, but he’s now in the fold for two more seasons.

[UPDATE: King's contract is for $750,000 per season.]

    I see him as a third line banger. He’s not a natural scorer, but is great on the forecheck with his size. He is a great guy for a playoff series because his style of play wears down the other size.

    His dropping the gloves in the Blues series shows his respect for the game and for his teammates. If he hadn’t done it, the Blues would have gone after Doughty.

    Its hard to believe that this guy is the same guy that I saw play 6 games with Kopitar under TM. This kid, with his size, hands, and underrated skating abilty, has the potential to be really good. The other thing I really like about Dwight is that he is much stronger then he looks, doesnt lose many board battles, and can give defensemen fits!

    Great signing by DL, and I am really looking forward to seeing how he will do under a full season of Sutter and Nichols.

    DesertKing Reply:

    @puck73,

    He and Martinez both sucked under TM, which is unusual taken that TM is a good teaching coach. The extra time in Manchester appears to have been a blessig in disguise.

    BringBackButchGoring Reply:

    @DesertKing, AM definitely did not suck under TM last year. He had one of the best plus/minus’s on the team last year and was pretty solid from the day he came up. Now early this season he seemed a bit hesitant/slow although I thought he began to play bette around the 20 game mark. Poor TM; he sure gets pounded here…

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @BringBackButchGoring, I supported TM until the San Jose series, and then the benching of Quick after 3 straight shutouts was the final straw for me. Personally, I think even the players shut him down after that.

    @neil,
    Hmm, I’m going to hazard a guess that even if we had William Scotty Bowman coaching in ’10/11 DK would have needed another good stint in the minors before he was ready for market.
    There was zero evidence back then to suggest he was prepared to play in the NHL.
    This time round, although it understandably took him a while to hit his straps, you could sense right from that first game at NYI that this was a much improved Mk II version of the product!

    Gustavo Reply:

    @neil,

    I give Ferreira all the credit for finally convincing DL to bring DK and JN up from Manchester. I’m sure DS helped twist DL’s arm.

    mcdangles Reply:

    @puck73, you nailed it with TM benching Quick, or should I say RESTED Quick, since he did not play bad due to the decision the coach made, he only was coming off a 3 game shut out, right? I have never, ever seen any coach in my time of hockey, as a player, scout and a coach, hear of a coach at a NHL level bench-sit his top goalie early at the start of an NHL season. I could see it near the end of the regular scheduled season, if they have a spot locked up for the playoffs, and you want to rest your top-starting tender, that makes all the sense but note what TM did. Where was his thinking when he did this?? That is when the players lost respect for Murray and just stop respecting him as the head coach

    [Reply]

    TF Reply:

    @mcdangles, Who in their right mind would bench a goalie during a hot streak? Totally uncalled for! If someone did that to an older “premier” goalie that would have been the end. Roy would never have played another game for a coach who did such a stupid thing.

    Rich Hammond Reply:

    @hockeyguy24, Well, independent of what you may or may not have heard, an out-of-court settlement has zero to do with a criminal investigation. It might influence a witness to withhold testimony, but in this case the alleged victim is reportedly not cooperating as it is. Nothing changed. Investigation still open. There’s no deadline for the DA.

    [Reply]

    Kingsfanone Reply:

    @hockeyguy24,

    An out of court settlement could only end a CIVIL case, not a CRIMINAL case. The DA will decide when and how this case will conclude.

    DD also does not have to be completely innocent for the DA to drop the charges. If the DA feels he can’t make/prove a criminal case, he could decide to not proceed into court.

    What a great deal.

    The only thing to do now is wait for preseason and find out who is going to come out on top of the Left Wing depth chart. Brown is obviously our LW1, but after that it’s a toss up. Here is how much each player would have scored if they each played 82 games last season.

    Penner: 9g, 13a, 22p
    Gagne: 17g, 24a, 41p
    King: 15g, 27a, 42p
    Clifford: 5g, 7a, 12p

    I can’t recall how much RW Penner has played — I know he was over there a little bit last season, and I seem to recall him playing RW in Anahiem (does anyone know?). If he’s comfortable on the RW, I wouldn’t mind a third a line of King/Stoll/Penner — with Gagne as our LW2.

    Either way, it’s a great sign that we have NHL calibar players fighting for spots in the lineup.

    [Reply]

    BringbackButchGoring Reply:

    @CabbagesAndKings, Gagne will clearly have a much harder time playing a third line role than Penner since he is a finesse rather than a power player. But Gagne deserves the 2nd line spot anyway since his goals came during a particularly bad streak for the Kings as TM was the coach (Oh no I jumped on the bandwagon) I think King is probably destined for 4th line unless Gagne can’t play. Penner hardly looked comfortable last year at LW; I can’t imagine him at RW. Plus we will have Doan over there lol

    [Reply]

    CabbagesAndKings Reply:

    @BringbackButchGoring, That seems pretty likely. Brown, Gagne, Penner, King — which leaves Clifford and Richardson out of the lineup.

    [Reply]

    BringbackButchGoring Reply:

    @CabbagesAndKings, Don’t know why Richardson is necessarily out of the running for 4th line RW, though.

    CabbagesAndKings Reply:

    @BringbackButchGoring, Very true. I suppose that leaves us a good three battles to enjoy. Penner vs. Gagne. Clifford vs. King. Nolan vs Richardson.

    I like how a King/Fraser/Nolan line looks.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @CabbagesAndKings,
    Well maybe, but who do you designate to take care of business when the other team’s heavies start zeroing in on Gagne and Carter, though.
    I sure don’t want Mike Richards being obliged to get involved every single time things start getting physical on his line’s shifts.
    One of Penner’s assets is that he’s imposing there and that’s what balances the 2nd line out.

    [Reply]

    Kingsfanone Reply:

    @Duncanz,

    You said the magic word…….balances! Agreed!

    [Reply]

    BringbackButchGoring Reply:

    @Duncanz, How does Detroit do it? Oh yeah they just skate around them….

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @BringbackButchGoring,
    Agreed, and when the Kings are the through-and-through formidable offensive force that the Red Wings are I will be happy to see luxury lines like Gags/Richie/Carts.
    Until then, that’s exactly what a line like that would be, 5 on 5.

    CabbagesAndKings Reply:

    @Duncanz, Penner’s size is enticing — no doubt. But I’m not sure a Gagne/Richards/Carter line is in the ballbark of being small enough that they need to add some muscle to the line. I’d be more worried about a Gagne/Stoll/Lewis line. Penner on the third line seems to add more size balance — not less.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @CabbagesAndKings,
    One thing to take into account is that Carter is tall but is not a player that gets involved physically in quite the same way Penner might. Richards is more likely to be mixing it up, but you’d rather not have your star centers taking on the job of a meaty winger.
    Assuming Penner plays up to capabilities, the Kings biggest problem is shaping up to be just where does Gagne fit in?
    Happy problem to have for sure but one that needs to be addressed so that none of the Kings arsenal is under-utilized.

    [Reply]

    CabbagesAndKings Reply:

    @KC23, I can’t imagine Gagne seeing the 4th line this season — although it is going to be very interesting to see how it shapes up. Much more likely that King fits into the 4th line for a full season of work before we move him up to 3rd line the following season.

    Brown/Kopitar/Williams
    Gagne/Richards/Carter
    Penner/Stoll/Lewis
    King/Fraser/Nolan

    (Clifford, Richardson)

    I personally hate seeing King down on the 4th line, he seems to have so much potential as a power forward, but everyone has to pay their dues.

    I’d like to see:

    Brown/Kopitar/Williams
    Gagne/Richards/Carter
    King/Stoll/Penner
    Clifford/Fraser/Nolan

    Now that’s a big team that you don’t want to play against.

    @KC23, I think it’s safe to say Gagne doesn’t fit into that dump and chase mold you see on a 4th line — nor would I like to see him grinding out the puck in the corners for a entire season.

    King slots pretty well on that 4th line (especially since that places him on a line with Nolan, I think they play well together).

    And I’m a pretty big fan of Lewis — but a skill guy he is not.

    Just asking, heh heh.. I know people go through stuff and all.

    @Duncanz, Indeed it is my friend. It’s true, I like more King’s players then we have room for in the line up. Honestly, I’m a fan of all the King’s players. (I wonder if that makes me a King’s fan?) Some players that I like just aren’t going to see a regular spot, no two ways about it.

    I like Lewis, and it seems likely that he’ll keep his spot on third line — which is fine by me. I am however, interested in what a King/Stoll/Penner line would like on the ice.

    It’s not contrary, I just have more then one thought dancing in my head at any given moment. Although it’s like two max.
