I think Doan would be a great addition to this team. I would love to see him on the 3rd line right wing. I think he would relish the idea going somewhere we he doesn’t have to be “the guy”, kind of like Ricky and Carts.

@IN King (formerly AZ King), I’m with you 100% INK! He would love to win and I think he would really understand what he would be bringing to this team. I posted a few back that if he were signed I don’ doubt at all that his first venture into the room would be to shake DB’s hand as a champion and ultimate competitor, a few no-hard-feelings and then trench brothers all around!
We would have a true fear-factor and IMO it would be beneficial for the TL’s, DK’s, JN’s of the team to see what a player who has the respect of the ref’s/league can and cannot get away with as far as the edgy/intimidation style of play. JN already has a nice chippiness to his stick, which I do enjoy watching when it shows. anywho STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS

@Stuart, As you note my handle, I’ve been a Kings fan for sooo long, but this organization has had a hard time being RECOGNIZED as a solid organization because they’ve always traded their prospects away for a veteran guy who’s so called in “his last” sails. This year SCF was really sweet in that not only did we win the cup for the first time, but many key players such as Quick, Kopitar, Brown, King, Nolan, Doughty, voynov were “raised” here.
We’ve garnered some respect here because we actually “built” a SC champion team from our own “resources” and not tried to “forced” it by getting all the has beens here.
The Kings organization has the ABILITY(good scouts) to get the future “Doans.” Heck we have jNolan and dKing who I think will be able to raise their market value. Perhaps, this is why rNash isn’t in the Kings list. We follow our OWN vision and not somebody elses and maybe we’ll continue to garner more respect in the future.

@IN King (formerly AZ King), Ricky & Carts IMHO really like LA, because they can play the game they love, and not have media/fans just hounding/bashing them. As for Doan he would have an upside, but the Downside is Jordan Nolan’s development would be stalled by a year at the AHL(He is of the age that can move up and Down without being exposed to waivers while Lewis is not). I also heard that Doan is looking for a 3 year payday(minimum of 15mil over 3 yrs) and that really doesn’t fit into the Kings plans in Cap Hit or length of contract. Not a good investment for a 3rd liner.

No pride in our organization?? Not sure where you get that?? No vision?? DL has tons of vision and has built a Stanley Cup winning team!
How do you know that we are not on the Nash list? I have read that we were and the total list really has not been made public, DL just would not give away the store for the guy. So are you saying that we should not have gone after Carter because we did not raise him up in our farm system?
We take pride in winning and if adding Doan makes us even better and stronger that is vision to making us better into the future. If Doan decides to sign with Phoenix or another team that is just business and we should not take it as a personal attack to the pride of our team.
I salute your passion for our team but-

I think the Kings are better with them gone (obvious about TM), but at least regarding TM, I’m more than happy to give him credit with establishing the defensive mentality that was partially responsible for the Kings winning the cup. I’m also more than happy to acknowledge that while TM was key to getting to the the finish line, he was not capable of crossing it.
I choose not to bash TM for being what he was, an excellent teacher incapable of motivating the team to do what they needed to do.

Its not like we would have won the Cup in 2011 with Kopi’s injury. 2010 was the first time the Kings were in the playoffs for 8 yrs, I would be surprised if any Coach could have lead that team to a Cup Championship. We won this year so do you mind showing us the extensive damage he did to this team? Its not like he was in charge for a decade( 3.35 yrs actually ). If your going to rail about Purcell and Moulson neither really is particularly strong on the D side of the game no Selke Candidates there. I think the Crawford years were way more damaging to the Kings other than gaining us the 2nd pick to take Doughty.

@KJCHIP30,
Traditionally, the engraving happens in September. It’s actually not engraving though. Technically, the names are stamped. As far as who gets their names on the cup, the rules say all Kings players who finished the season as Kings property, played 41 or more regular season games or played at least one game in the Final, plus management (inc. owner, GM, asst GM, coach, asst coaches, scouts — although I think the management names are left to the team’s discretion. Rich?).
Drewiske, Parse, Westgarth and Loktionov did not play 41 games. Neither did Gagne, Nolan, Carter or King, but they played in the Final. Jack Johnson got traded so he misses out.

@fridgemagnet57,
No, the AHL guys don’t get rings or their names on the cup. Yes, I assume you’re right and raising the cup was part of the celebration, not an indicator of anything.
The team can petition the league to have a player’s name added under special circumstances, but I think that would be kind of hard to argue in Parse’s case. I can see them petitioning to add Loktionov, since he played 39 games in the regular season and two in the playoffs, which adds up to 41.
luc20rules Reply:
July 16th, 2012 at 8:26 pm
@fridgemagnet57, I believe the Parse(IR), and AHL players were members of the extended taxi squad (10 player slots added to the inactive NHL roster) that playoff teams are alloted. Tyler Toffoli was also one of those players I suppose he played a few of AHL playoff games, but mostly he was in Juniors all year. That is why they were on hand to lift the cup, but no lifting the cup is no assurance that they will get their name stamped on the cup.

Rich,
After watching the NBC version of the finals game 6 (for the third time), I would like to ask you whether you think the NBC national broadcasters are biased in favor of east coast teams. Pierre McGuire comes to mind, especially. I watched the Canadian CBC broadcast and did not think there was any bias whatsoever. However, Pierre McGuire’s NBC comments (keep in mind, not his interviews with players, but his individual opinions) seem to lean heavily in favor of New Jersey. I believe Mike Emrick used to broadcast New Jersey’s games, but I thought his broadcast at least kept some semblance of objectivity. Actually, it seemed to me that NBC retired NHL players displayed more objectivity than non retired players. Considering your own background in mass media, do you think NBC displayed a bias in favor of the east coast and if so, what do you think can be done to weaken this bias?
[Reply]
Mike in Oregon Reply:
July 16th, 2012 at 11:26 am
@John, They were, and are continually biased towards east coast teams in my opinion. This includes satellite NHL radio and all TV coverage except our own broadcasts. It was particularly irritating in the playoffs. When the Kings were up 3-0 in final, despite not having much to say about Jersey, the broadcast crew for NBC continually found “amazing” facts about NJ while they were getting their clocks cleaned. When Devils won two games, it was like the earth moved and Kings got little respect. I was really disappointed in the coverage, which actually made me angry a number of times. Even Eddie Olczyk, a former KING assistant captain, was biased big time towards Devils. I also believe that if Devils had won, the celebration coverage would have pre-empted the riveting race car programming that followed. I loved the visual content of NBC coverage, which I thought was excellent. And, Mike Emrick is SICK. To me, he is in the Bob Miller league, although I would pick Bob over anyone if given a choice. Milbury was also reasonably objective and I thought very insightful. Also, JR was pretty good too. But, the West gets no respect.

I agree. I was more disappointed in the apparent rooting for the Devils by Olczyk than Maguire’s work. Maguire’s loyalty seems to be more directed at players instead of teams (witness Penguins fans’ hatred of him for his effusive praise of Mike Richards while Richards was in Philadelphia). There were times it seemed that Olczyk was genuinely angry that the Kings were winning.

@Mike in Oregon,
One thing which particularly struck me was how Pierre McGuire repeatedly complained about the lack of any penalty on the Jarret Stoll hit on Brian Gionta while Rob Scuderi is lying on the ice with his blood splattered around. If you look carefully, you’ll notice that the hit on Gionta happened right in front of McGuire. I guess the natural tendency is to focus on the hit you see right in front of you, but McGuire kept repeating the same thing even though replays obviously showed the Scuderi hit to be much more severe. He just kept mentioning the hit on Gionta numerous times, when it really didn’t even come close to the severity of the Scuderi hit. I felt that by repeating the same thing so often exposed his bias in favor of the Devils.

1. Any chance the LAK will have a “Day with the Cup” exclusively for Insider bloggers and/or season ticket holders? I thought a charity event like Jim Fox’s Wine Tasting would give us the chance to take pictures with the Cup while serving a good cause, at the same time.
2. Can you expand on any last minute exchanges between DL’s office and J Bernier’s camp, if any?
3. Any DD case updates?
4. Are you going on vacation soon? Please let us know the dates.
Again, thank you for your work. It gets an A+ on my evaluation!!

I have question about the stick of Marty in 1993 SC Finals.
My questions are,
1. Did Marty told the equipment department what stick he want them to order?
2. Did the equipment department know about it’s illegal?
3. I know we didn’t, but if we really want to blame on someone, should it be Marty more or the Equipment department?

Players work on their sticks into the shape they want them in. In the “old days” guys would heat up their sticks with a torch and shape the blade to their liking. Marty knew exactly what he was playing with.

@zdfun, many players adapt the curve to their liking. Usually with a blow torch, especially back then. I doubt the stick manufacturers would make an illegal staick and it’s more likely that McSorely liked the extra bend in the blade and put it there himself

That would be so true if it still existed.
If not and it was splintered down and crushed to make pomade for Barry Melrose’s mullet, and had Pat Elias thrown the puck into the Atlantic they would have remained two of the great missing heirlooms in Kings history.
Fine question you ask, though.
@RH single-handedly, but for a little assist on the national stage from Bill Plaschke, tracked down the puck’s whereabouts.
If he managed to do the same with that stick he would deserve to be enshrined along with them!

@mask0425x, That’s a really great question!
I once asked that very question of a member of the coaching staff who replied that he (or she, ha ha) read it from time to time. The impression I got was that he (darn, gave it away) was playing it down a little. Others deny all interest. Are they lying?
If I were a coach or in any of several other positions on the club, I would comb the blog (and others) as a matter of course. It’s unimaginable that at odd times valuable ideas or analysis wouldn’t appear here before being considered by other departments of the organization.
If I were running another club, I would designate one of the scouting staff expressly to monitor the best fansites in search of info and theory on the other hockey clubs’ lineups and tactics.
Sometimes I get nervous wondering who could be silently lurking when one of our bloggers here brings up an incisive point.
I inevitably shudder when it’s @TiredOfIt or @JackKentCooke, of course!

At the very least Dustin Brown follows the blog on Twitter. Also, there was a Twitter account Called FakeTerryMurry (when he was coaching) that DB followed as well which made fun of how bad we were at the time. I’m sure those comments were seen.
I’m sure that, if not the players themselves, their family and friends do so I wouldn’t be surprised if stuff “got back to them”
I know that we have all heard JIm Fox mention things on the braodcast that were nearly direct quotes from this blog, so I imagine he checks it out.

Those diect quotes from the blog were probably inadvertant (or otherwise) direct quotes from Jim Fox in the first place, so maybe just a rehash of things he’d previously said.
I guess if he does read the blog he’ll now be careful of repeating himself, especially after reading rather self-flattering instructional posts!

Just curious as to your view on how the season ended. Since you’re impartial as to the out come, what, in your opinion would have been the better story line for you to write/comment about. The Kings finish out the way they did or they have a complete collapse and lose the series to the Devils in 7.
Either way, the Kings still finish better than anyone could have imagined, but if they lose, it would be only the 4th time in NHL history a team came back from being down 0-3.

I know it’s hard to evaluate a player’s psyche, especially when you don’t know them very well, but do given that a report recently came out that Shane Doan is “interested” in LA Kings, he’d give up the incredible about of money that some teams are reportedly offering him since we have significantly less room under our cap than those other teams? Given all that you know about Doan, do you think location or money is more important?
One other question… Do you think Cam Janssen’s recent interview accurately showcases how a lot of players truly are on/off the ice? Do you think there will be any negative fallout publicly, besides the harsh criticism he received?

So instead I’ll tell an unrelated anecdote.
My best friend’s dating a guy who’s from Jersey and I met him today. He had actually just gotten back from a trip home a couple days ago, so one of the very first things I said to him was, “New Jersey must be a sad place right now without a big, shiny, silver Cup to brighten it, huh?” He had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. He didn’t even know his home team was in the Finals, nor did he know anyone who cared enough about it to mention it in conversation. Although, given the fact that he was here for most of the playoffs and seemed to have no idea we were there, either, he might just be oblivious to hockey in general. It’s a good thing he’s such a nice guy, or I’d probably encourage my friend to move on. lol I’m kidding. Mostly.

@TiredOfIt, my 2 cents:
I think the team will get respect when we have the right to demand it. With our Playoff run/ Cup victory we’ve earned respect and now it looks like we’ll have a full building for the rest of the season. If the team plays wells again the local media will have no choice but to give them more space and respect. it’s one thing to be a loveable loser in a sport like baseball like the Cubs (sorry Rich) where people don’t have to be convinced to be baseball fans, but for hockey I don’t think it’s the same. Half the battle is getting new fans to learn and understand the sport. Nothing compels a person to learn and understand a sport quite like winning. Even some American Original 6 hockey teams had trouble getting crowds when they weren’t winning
The Kings are winners now and have more mindshare with regular sports fans. Continued winning will only help. Oh and wearing silver and black doesn’t hurt either

Thanks, Rich, for the yeoman’s job of providing such great insight, news & info.
Lou Lamoriello taught DL that at the end of every season a GM should take a piece of paper and write down the 3 big mistakes they made.
Q: Climbing into Dean’s mind (there’s a task for you), what would you guess he’d say were his 3 big mistakes as Kings GM for the 2011-2012 season?
I’d say: 1) Waiting too long to fire Terry Murray. 2) Expecting Trent Hunter & Ethan Moreau to still be serviceable NHL players. 3) Not bringing up King & Nolan sooner (as Ferreira suggested & pleaded for).

@Gustavo, My educated guess is that DL felt as though Murray was both a good coach & great guy. That DL had given TM a roster full of scorers, a team meant to succeed. Everyone started the season with the best of intentions. But, as we now know, TM had taken the Kings as far as his highly conservative, defense first approach could go. When the Kings got into a terrible slump scoring goals – that was it. Something had to give. It was Murray.
I would not have wanted to be DL on that long flight to Boston to meet with Murray, or be in the room when DL let TM go. That’s tough. But, that;s what a GM has to do – because TM wasn’t the guy to drive the bus anymore.

@rogiesbackup, I think there is a bit of both going on. Where I live, on the border of Flyers and Devils/Rangers territory, if I didn’t know better I’d have thought the Flyers relocated to the west and were making a big run. Everything was about Richards and Carter and the rest of the former Philly crew. Of course, that’s not NBC, that the local sports coverage. With NBC, having Emerick, who got his start with the Devils, announcing the SCF certainly didn’t help the bias. All that said, I also think some Kings fans are looking for the bias and are quick to perceive every small comment as a slight, so it is exaggerated. Though I do have to put in alot more work following the Kings on the East Coast than a Rangers of Flyers fan would to follow their team on the West Coast.

Great Job on the blog. A couple of questions:
1) Do we have a full list of whose names are going on the Cup? Wasn’t sure about guys like Trent Hunter, etc 2) Do you know how long the radio contract with 1150 is for ? Reception is a little spotty outside LA, although there are options like Satellite Radio (thank goodness) 3) Is Mike Murphy in line for a Kings Legends night ? Doesn’t seem like we get too many 50/50 calls from the War Room in Toronto, maybe we need to send a little love up there (where Murphy is in charge) 4) What was the feeling about the Kings Fest events of the past couple years. Seems like some version of that right before Training Camp would be option. I think the line for “take your picture with the Cup” would start next week

@858King, Actually I think I can answer the question a little better after being at the rally. I watched workers actually come out to the ice area where the “Stanley Cup Final” logo was placed. I watched them melt the ice with a blower type apparatus and then peel the logo off. It looked like there was a layer of ice under the logo and obviously a layer over it. So the logo was actually a thin sheet of some type of material. I would assume a plastic film of some type. That’s what I saw and I hope it answers your question.

@Shotongoal, Thanks! I hope it does too because I’ve always wondered how it gets converted so quickly. I’m familiar with the ice making process itself but when they have to add or remove something it seems to be done quickly. My understanding is that there is one (maybe two) thin layers of water/ice then the white, lines, circles etc, are added and then flooded with several more layers
I also assumed they “Stanley Cup Final” etc were actual paint like the lines and not some sort of graphic in the ice itself.
I’d be interested to hear how it’s done for certain even though your answer seems to make sense

Had to skip the comments due to time constraints so hope this isn’t a dupe. Do the Kings have plans for Maxim Kitsyn, specifically do they have him under contract after his KHL contract expires?
[Reply]
My question: “Ninth?!?” Having phrased it that way…the impression is that classy guys like Anze Kopitar really don’t care about things like the Selke; they say they’d been honored to win it, it would be nice, but that’s not a focus. Still, there remains what appears to be an understandable but brutal non-West bias with individual recognition. Do the Kings organizational types talk about it? Do they lobby or push on behalf of players? If so, does it help? If not, would it help?

Rich:
1. Who do you think was the biggest standout in the Kings development camp?
2. Do you expect Bernier to be dealt before the season starts?

@Jason K for Kings,
If DL can get what he deems is fair value for Bernier he will trade him, if not than expect to see Bernier on the Kings roster at the start of the season.

@IN King (formerly AZ King),
Ditto. Unless there is something DL just can’t pass up I would say to keep him. After all, this is a business to them and if anything happened to Quick next season (knock on wood) we would want to make sure we didn’t have a rookie goalie between the posts.

Hi Rich. Thanks for the great year. Here’s my question. Is there a monetary prize axxociated with winning the Stanley Cup, say like winning the President’s Cup? My wife and I have a bet. Once again, thanks for all the great coverage.

Hey Rich! Just wondering…when is the cup coming to Kenora, Ontario accompanied by Richards?

Rich,
last year Trent Hunter was invited to Kings training camp. How invitation in general happens? Does GM calls to player’s agent and asks him if the palyer want to come to the camp or there is other way? Thanks!

Bob and Jim were considering doing a DVD of announcing the fianl game, is it going to happen, if so I want a copy????????????

Why wasn’t Kyle Clifford mentioned in the salary scale post? Everyone was mentioned except for him.
Thanks (:

@KAT, He only listed the players that he felt would be on the 23 man roster. Its too early to tell before preseason, but Clifford may be starting the season with Manchester in the AHL. I imagine the Kings will only keep Westgarth or Clifford on the 23 man roster if you are wondering who he is primarily competing with.

Clifford would never clear waivers.

Can you remember any Stanley Cup Champion that has returned every single player from their Cup team as the Kings now have? In your opinion, does this improve the Kings’ chances of repeating or should they have gone a different direction, primarily with their UFA’s?

@sstephen17, I know you are likely looking at Minn’s spending spree that netted them Parise, and Suter. The current CBA that is good thru 9/15/2012 says the Salary Cap is at 70.2 mil, but that is not really good for this year. The renegotiated Salary Cap may be lowered with no roll back in player salaries, which would mean some teams will need to send players to the AHL to get them off the Cap or there maybe a couple of roster amnesty spots like in the NBA CBA that allows teams to desolve some contracts to free cap space and the player must sign some place else. Anyway if the players win no rollback and the owners win the lower Cap then teams close to the Cap like Minn. will suffer depending on the CBAs new resolutions(if there are to be any) for teams that are over the lowered Cap.

@luc20rules, Why do they have to “desolve” the contracts, why not just flat out send them to the AHL??

@luc20rules,
What you describe is exactly the reason the league/union wouldn’t lower the cap without giving teams a manageable way to comply. “Send a bunch of NHL players to the minors” isn’t going to be an option the union would knowingly let stand, and in fact that loophole is (or at least has been discussed in the past as) something that may be closed in the coming CBA. And big spending teams (i.e. ownership, i.e. the league) aren’t going to want to sabotage their own big spending ways.

Ever had a Kings GameDay Burgers and Brew Combo at The Mixing Room? My mouth just watered a little. Is it October yet?

Hey Rich, not sure if this has been asked yet, but has Dean said anything about his plans for Kevin Westgarth? Since all the Kings who played in the playoffs are coming back, there doesn’t appear to be room for Westy on the 23 man roster. Also, Darryl Sutter didn’t seem to have much use for him.
P.S. I thought your vacation was supposed to start yesterday, the 15th? Quit working and go relax by a beach somewhere. You deserve it.

@CB14, I hope Coach Sutter remembers how the ’93 Kings team was beaten around in ’94 after McSorley was traded. By the time he was traded back, too much damage had been done.

Rich, will there be a consolidated list of the commemorative videos, books, etc re-capping the season that are referenced constantly? There seems to be some great stuff in the works and it would be nice to have a list of what you know about!

Rich,
I am not sure if this already was asked by someone else… In terms of Kings’ chances to repeat – everyone says it hasn’t been done since Detroit did it in 97-98 but are there any statistics for prior Stanley Cup champions coming back next year without any personnel changes with all key players signed long-term? Also, did anyone who won the Cup before have the average age of most important contributors around 25? Thanks,
[Reply]
Thanks Rich, for all you do, especially in this longer Stanley Cup-winning season for the Kings.
My question is about Dave Taylor. I know you had a picture from Bob Miller’s time with the Cup and Dave was there with Jim Fox and others, but has anyone been able to get him to comment on this Cup run?
I know he’s with the Blues now but it would be great to get his thoughts, unless you have some already from him or others surrounding the team.
THANK YOU!

Rich,
Wondering if this site can number the post and or replies so that the blogger can find their threads or responds easier by making a mental note what number their thread is so it’s easier to find. I’ve seen the blog up 1000 bloggers and its hard to find my own post and if anybody responded to it.
Thanks.

I was wondering how Nick Ebert could have fallen from a 1st round certainty to Mr. Irrelevant of the draft. I thought that he might fall a round or two, but SIX? How the heck did the Kings know he was still there for the picking?

@d b cooper,
After playing half a season for Mississisauga (sp!) St. Michael’s Majors (OHL), Kitsyn returned to the KHL, from which he was on loan (under contract until…either the end of this past season or next season). Youngsters don’t generally get much of a shot in the KHL as I understand it, and Kitsyn wasn’t able to do much with his limited opportunities. At some point last season he was sent down to the KHL’s minor league, the name of which escapes me.
If he had stayed in North America, he would have had to be signed by the Kings by this past June, I think. But, as he is playing in Europe, I’m pretty sure his North American rights belong to the Kings indefinitely.

Rich,
Will Suter change the captain and alternate captains of the team? Brown, Kopitar and Green were all Murray picks.
Thanks

Rich – Did you hoist the cup above your head? Can we see a pic? How do you feel personally to have journeyed with this team over the past years through the ups and downs and now see them win it all the way they did? Personally? Thanks for everything you do!

I know I’m probably repeating some questions but I gotta ask just in case:
- Which players were playing hurt during the playoffs and what were their injuries?
- Do you get a ring? Will you post a picture of it when you get it?
- Will future jerseys have any purple on them? If, as a fan, I could put my vote in to keep the purple, I would. Just sayin’.
- Do the players/coaches get bonuses for being in the playoffs or for winning the cup?
- Who is your favorite King to interview, and why?
- Aside from Carter and Richards, who are some players that seem to have a strong friendship off the ice?
Thanks for all you do, Rich!

Why are the Kings signing so many defensemen? It seems we had a solid defense so it is confusing to see all the defensive additions in the off season.

Rich, I would like to get a DVD of season highlights, the playoffs, and/or the SC Final games. Are the Kings going to market any recordings? Also, if they do, would you please suggest adding Game #7 vs Toronto in 1993? And, if I were to really get my way on this, I’d like to see highlights of The Great One and McSorley as well.
I closely watched the interview with Marty regarding the “stick.” However, nobody has said just how “far” that stick had violated regulations. I’d like to know. Especially if there’s any possibility the stick may have been altered w/o Kings’ staff knowing it occurred.
Did DL hire additional security to guard Kings equipment during SC playoff run?
Thanks. Hope you have to work just as hard next SC playoffs too!!

Will Maxim Kitsyn come back over this summer or does he have to finish his military contract first…? Is he still highly regarded by the Kings…..? I would love to see him in Manchester sooner than later ( I want to see him ” score ze goals “).
[Reply]
Rich, for fun, and ease of accessing, would you please ask that we be able to watch (even w/commercials) the entire game #6 asap? There’s nothing I’ve enjoyed more than watching those highlights or that game. The animated Kings bench in last five minutes is priceless.
And could we have access to radio broadcast too? Around ten minutes left Kings (don’t remember who) announcer says a group of fans in level 100 are completely standing as a group. He had never seen that before, the emotions in his voice were intense.

Hail Kings Fans; Winners All!
My question revolves around the 3rd line makeup for next year. I’m assuming Gagne is ready to go.
The 3rd line becomes Gagne, Stoll, and who else?? Lewis does not have the offensive skills to be a 3rd line winger. We need someone Doan-like. The Kings need to get someone in before training camp. I see Elkins as part of the active roster now, is he a possibility?
A forth line of King-Lewis-Nolan would be terrific!!!
This 3rd line right wing problem is the most serious problem the Kings forwards have.
What do you think?

I wonder if the Kings will ber doing a “We Are the Champions” recording a la the Big Blue Wrecking Crew a while back, and who would be the main singers for this if it did happen?

Sorry for the late post.
With all the news about crazy long, front-loaded contracts, bonuses, NTC’s, etc, my question goes back to when Jack Johnson negotiated his own contract. Is this something that is generally frowned upon by the NHLPA, other players, etc? Rich, do you ever hear any players, agents, media talking about it or does it not come up often since it doesn’t happen often? Do you feel players negotiating their own contracts is a good thing or bad thing?
Thanks for all you do Rich!

I have3 always heard that this ice at staples center was some of the worst in the NHL and given that we have seen staff taking ice temperatures during all the periods i have no reason to believe that this ice is great. Why is is that our ice is so bad? If it can be rated good in PHX one would think it should be good in LA. Is there a standard for ice quality throughout the league? Is there a ratings table of all the arenas of the NHL?
