Nick Nickson got some time this week to visit family in upstate New York, and WHEC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Rochester, did this nice (written and video) piece about Nick, which can be seen/read at the link below…
Also, KingsVision was able to put together a series of videos of Anze Kopitar’s day with the Stanley Cup yesterday in Slovenia. Click below for the series…
Kopitar having his day. Priceless.
[Reply]
Priceless is right. That is one happy guy.

I LOVE these videos. So happy for our champion Anze. What a great, humble, happy guy.

Rich, the article on Nick brought up his desire to raise money for the Mark Bavis & Ace Bailey Foundation.
There was an article written a few weeks ago about the Kings possibly adding the names of Mark & Ace onto the Stanley Cup in memoriam. Is that possible? Kings get 52 slots for names of players, coaches, etc. Would they have to petition the NHL, because Mark & Ace died in 2001 and, regrettably, are not part of the 2012 Kings organization?. It would be such a classy & honorable thing to put their names on the Cup…if it’s allowed.

WOW its beautiful out on that lake. I could get lost out there and be ok with it!

Great to see Nick getting recognition, but damn, does WHEC-TV need a proofreader. So. Many. Errors!

OT….
So I just got back from a 2 week vacay(honeymoon), was ‘un-plugged’ for the duration. To sum up what happened since then…please help fill in any blanks.
-Quick 10 year extension
-Penner Re-signed
-Campbell re-signed
-Doughty case???
-We drafted Tanner Pearson…from what i’ve read, the kid seems perfect for the Kings.
-Mullen = gone
-Kopitar has the cup in Slovenia, after Voynov and Loki toured Russia.
-Elias is a thief
I was in Costa Rica, and wore my Kings hat with pride(as If I wouldn’t otherwise), and I ran into several NJ Devil fans+Yotes fans(yes, several yotes fans). Was really hard not to gloat too much.
Great to see the the entire team coming back to defend OUR cup.
Go Kings!

@A Cup B4 I Died!, Elias came clean, gave puck back to Kings. Kings Signed a one year deal for a defensemen (Bodnarchuk) that has been in the Bruins organization for 4 years. Little guy for a defensemen, but helps with numbers in Manchester after the loss of Mullen.

I love seeing Anze “at home” in Slovenia. The man is a rock god there! I’d love to know if when he retires he thinks he’ll return to Slovenia or live in the US (or both). He could be the President of the Republic easily!
Also on the first pic out there with the cup on the log or pole that marked Kopitar hockey accomplishments, notice how the Stanley Cup seemed to be only half way up? Gotta love a real hockey family!

Slovenia looks really pretty. Very cool this is the first time Stanley has visited there.
Usually not very superstitious but interesting that Kopi’s younger brother ate out of the Cup as well. I guess he does care about the belief that you have to win the Cup in order to touch it. Haha.
It would be awesome if the NHL Network would do a “summer with Stanley” program for this summer just like they did with the Bruins last summer.

@Bob Bobson, AND the Blackhawks the season before……if they don’t with the Kings, then we all know that the NHL Network is East Coast bias……notice, last summer, the NHL Network showed all the playoff games constantly non-stop. THIS year, the replays are only on Wednesdays……what are they going to be talking about on NHL Tonight when there is nothing going on that can’t be said on an NHL update with Deer In the Headlights gazed Ed Cohen…….
Probably will show Game 6 of the finals often but how about the other 15 wins????? They are just as important as Quickie stating in front of 18,000 Kings faithful “What a XXXXXXX team!!!”
Speaking of NHL network, wonder what’s on today????? OMG the whole season series on the Edmonton Oilers, OIL DRIVE!!!!! Get to see Tom Renney rant!!!! LOL……
If the NHL Network does not have The Summer of Stanley, I hope all the videos that are posted are collected in one spot so we can view them…..at least they are on the website.

Here’s hoping Kopi made the same wish when he rang the bell…..
So glad for him and the whole team.

i’m glad that nick finally gets some recognition. bob miller gets all of the attention during the cup celebration with not much love for nick. do not get me wrong i love bob miller, but i also think that nick should be getting more love as well. it is hard enough to call a hockey game, but to do it on radio where viewing the game is not possibly is doubly hard. but nick calls the game with such ease and grace. i literally can close my eyes and listen to nick and be able to follow the puck and the action that is going on.
thank you nick, and i’m so glad for you and the rest of the kings organization for winning and celebrating the stanley cup.

@ocnbrze, Nick deserves a lot of personal credit as he has always been a Bob Miller supporter. Like the picture of Bob with the cup, Nick was right nearby just applauding and the look on his face was priceless…..the day of the parade and rally, Nick was interviewed with sunglasses and all……he was content to be just a fan and the joy on his face was, again, priceless. I wouldn’t be too surprised if he did a little partying himself. What a joy it is to have Nick. He is enjoying and celebrating but not wanting to take too much glory for himself. We have such great guys broadcasting the champions……Bob, Jim, Nick and Daryl. We are blessed!

I have no TV in my home and I hate sports bars so I have relied on the exciting radio calls of Nick and Darryl for my hockey fix for all but the few games I can attend. When I met him to get his autograph, Nick told me that he called radio the theater of the imagination.
Nick and Darryl are so under-recognized. Hopefully with the Cup, that will change. We are so lucky in LA to have such great professionals calling the game on both radio and TV.

This is an organization with good, solid people in it. Not those who are accomplished professionals but come with numerous personal issues as well–rather people whom you would feel comfortable knowing personally. (Contrast that with the entertainment industry where you can find good folks and also those who simultaneouly make $20 million and police booking appearances–BTW please not Doughty).
Obviously we can’t know every personal detail, but in this age of the Internet, if something unseemly happens, the public usually finds out in a hurry. And, by and large, we hear and see good stories about players and staff. The Kopitars are one; Dustin Brown patiently signing 600 autographs at Sport Chalet instead of the scheduled 300. The friendliness and approachability of our broadcasting staff, including Bob Miller’s 39 years and Nick Nickson’s 31 years. Lotsa examples.
Let’s hope that this summer, no news comes that breaks the mould.

For those of you that were lucky enough to attend Game 1 in Glendale and then stop in at the lobby bar of The Renaissance Hotell afterwards (@Shotongoal, @LA_1968, @Scott, etc) with the many Kings and NBC hockey luminaries that were hanging out, you will doubtless remember how Nick was the guy that stood out from all by actually spending the whole night right in the middle of the clutch of Kings fans, answering questions and telling stories from over the years.
When he could have chosen any of several tables to sit at with the other stars, his gesture was generous and totally impressive.
Of all the marvelous memories I hold of the 2012 Stanley Cup run, this one is right up there in the ranking.
Nick Nickson displayed that night what a fabulous Los Angeles King he truly is – and a real man of the people!
Cheers, Nick!!!

Nick, I have to say that listening to you call the games for over half of my life has been a pleasure beyond words.
