‘Kings East’ announces two hires

For a while, it became popular to refer to the Kings as ”Flyers West,” given the deep connections between the two teams. Now, is it trending the other way? As expected, the Flyers today named former Kings coach Terry Murray as the coach of their American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms. The Flyers also named former Kings winger Ian Laperriere to the newly created role of director of player development. Murray and Laperriere also spent parts of their respective playing careers with the Flyers. Murray was under contract with the Kings for the upcoming season, but the Kings recently gave permission to the Flyers to talk to Murray about the AHL opening. Laperriere recently retired because of persistent concussion issues.

    I was very critical of TM as Kings coach and was joyful to see him replaced. I wish him well in his new job which is one much better suited to his talents. He’s more of a developmental coach capable of teaching positioning and team-concept-defense than anything else. It will be his job there to prepare all the players on the AHL team for possible NHL duty and not simply coach them as robots in the big show as he did all to often with the Kings.

    @Crown Royal, You’re certainly right that TM is a good developmental coach for a young team, which is exactly why the Kings needed him when they hired him. He had to teach this team how to play defense, hoe to play as a team, & how to win close games. Without Terry Murray there would be no Cup in LA yet. I was really surprised a young team like Edmonton didn’t hire him. I know he’ll do great things for the Flyers organization.

    Really glad to see Lappy staying in hockey. One of the true “heart & soul” guys in hockey history. He was much more likely to get a Gordie Howe hat trick then a conventional one. Every locker room needs s guy like Lsppy.

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

    @Crown Royal, When TM was hired he was the right man for the job. He got fired after he did the job that was best suited for him. He instill in the Kings the D first attitude, and developed some of the young players. Then DS was brought in as the coach to take us to the step TM couldn’t, but we did owe him the opportunity to try to take us there. What you will argue with DL is was the opportunity we gave TM too long. Judging by the result it is difficult to argue against DL. Remember with Kopi’s injury last year we weren’t going to win the cup.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @luc20rules,
    … which, by the same token, you’d have to deem that injury as unfortunate to TM as it was to DL, true?

    [Reply]

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @luc20rules,

    I’m not convinced DL wanted to fire TM when he did but rather may have been pressured from above to get rid of TM. Reports were that DL called out the team when he removed TM saying “the players cost TM his job.” I disagree with that statement if that’s what DL really said.

    TM got HIMSELF fired because of his inability to make adjustments during games, wasting the talents of players like Moulson, Purcell, Moller, and was replaced by a better coach.
    Mitchell said after DS was aboard “We were better prepared,” and Kopi said “We are probably more accountable under DS.”

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

    @Crown Royal, Its amazing how you bring up Moulson (-10 over last 3 years) who does score, but really hasn’t some how improved his team. Moulson just was never a 2 way player. That is not the way this team is going. That to me is why I think we were fortunate to not get Kovi. We won it all with team concept, D, pressure all over the ice, and Goaltending. Teddy Purcell is riding on the coattails of Stamkos. Moller really? Moller Swedish Elite League he must of gotten hurt only 19 GP 7 G 8 A.

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @luc20rules,

    Moulson plays on a bad team. Moller would have been a good player and Purcell could have been better without TM. TM is an AHL level coach. That’s where he belongs. Yes, he was an improvement over Crawford considering the Kings needed to tighten up defensively but people are making TM out to be much more than he was. He was overated when the Kings hired him and he’s overated now-as an NHL coach. He failed in Philadelphia to win a cup, he failed in Florida to win a cup, this despite having some really good players. He was failing in L.A. until a better coach came in and showed how good the Kings could really become. He seems like a nice guy so I hope this job works out for him but as an NHL level coach, he doesn’t have what it takes.

    Paulhb Reply:

    @Crown Royal, Yet more revisionist Kings history. The Kings weren’t much better under D’s as they were under TM until the Carter trade. If they had been the Carter trade probably never happens.

    You say people are overrating TM but you’re underrating him.

    With all that said, I did try to warn everyone last offseason that Terry Murray teams always took two big steps backwards after 2 or 3 good seasons and everyone was saying I was being too harsh. So I’ll state right now that Terry Murray may be the best NHL caliber coach fir a young team that needs to learn defense & develop it’s players. Then another coach has to come in & push those teams to a championship. Daryl Sutter did that for the Kings.

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @Paulhb,

    Part of the reason Kings weren’t better initially under DS was because the Kings had to RECOVER from TM. The team had to learn how to play more agressively and with confidence. TM coached the players like they were robots having no confidence in them but rather his system. Matt Greene is a good example of a player who played much better under DS. Kopi and ultimately DB were much better. Lewis had been benched under TM and would have ended up being run out of town like Moulson, Purcell, and Moller if DS hadn’t come in and given him the confidence to play to his potential.

    The Carter trade helped as he is a sniper and removing JJ proved to be a plus but most importantly is was bringing in a coach who is light years better than the overated TM.

    @Lake Forest, I believe it works out however the Kings and Flyers make it work. You can be sure at a minimum Murray will receive what he is owed for the final year of his contract with L.A. The Flyers in all likelihood will pay Murray what an AHL coach gets paid customarily and the Kings will pick up the remainder. In any case Murray will get his money and the opportunity to work with players and maybe work back into an NHL head coaching role. Someone above commented on Murray possibly going to a team like Edmonton. The Kings likely would not have given permission for that discussion. Certainly not to allow Murray to be a head coach in the West. So everyone involved should be satisfied with the outcome.

One of them might just send an affordable player or two and some great prospects to get him. jb’s value has skyrocketed….by keeping him another season is not necessarily a bad thing, could diminish his future value if he has another sub-par season as jq’s backup…

    he has only been in 41 nhl games and his current value has never been higher…there could be a chance that if he is kept and only gets into a dozen games or so next season, he won’t be worth as much as a tradeable asset…

    i do think the kings are in a great position…and i think dl knows what he wants for jb…

    remember, tampa bay tried earlier, (the story was leaked on twitter), a few weeks ago and thought that the kings were asking for way too much…that’s why they called nashville and got andres linback – he was supposedly less expensive to obtain…

    so if deano doesn’t get what he wants in return – jb is probably gonna stay…

    it’s really that simple to me…

    There’s rumors floating around that Bernier might be traded and that other teams might want him. Even though he didn’t play in the playoffs, he was a strong backup for us in the regular season and won us some important games. He doesn’t deserve to be traded, he deserves the money he is getting here, no less. Plus Lombardi has said he wants to keep the team together for another run and that’s what we all want as fans i’m sure, so why would we trade him? Doesn’t make sense to me.

    @TheAcaciaStrain, Bernier wants to play. Simple as that.

    rick Reply:

    @TheAcaciaStrain, We just committed to Quick for 10 years. Bernier wants to be a starter, and has every right to feel that way. If he stays, he is not going to be a happy camper. Best for him, and the organization, to let him go and get some real value in return.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @rick, Luongo?

    [Reply]

    rick Reply:

    @Duncanz, I could take your response one of several ways. One would be that Bernier, like Luongo, is doomed to second string status and should be freed of that burden. The other could be that signing Quick to a long term deal, like Luongo’s, is a big risk and that we therefore need to keep a highly skilled backup on hand. Perhaps you will be so kind to educate me as to the intended meaning….

    Duncanz Reply:

    @viscountable,
    The way you put it, anything @Stuartside of that deal would be a bonus, for LAK, not DP.
    Amazingly similar careers in ways those two, eh?

    CB14 Reply:

    @variable, What about Marty Brodeur hiring an agent because he might leave the Devils? That would be pretty shocking to me if it does in fact happen.

    Regarding Penner, I’m not against giving him more than what he’s worth just as long as it’s only for 1 year. I think we all can agree that he doesn’t deserve more than 2.5 million, mabye 3 tops. My reasoning is because if DL wants DP back, in that case we can assume he doesn’t want to go after anyone else who would make more money like Parise, it doesn’t hurt us one bit to overpay Penner for 1 year. Our cap situation next year is great, so having an insurance player in case Gagne decides to retire, or gets injured again, would be nice to have. Also, any free agent who DL would like better than Penner is going to command a long term deal with likely an inflated salary cap number. IMO it’s much better to have an inflated cap number for 1 year in Penner, than an inflated cap number for 2 or 3 years.

    i know he spends his summers out here…but he and his wife just bought a house in minny…and since the red wings have more room to overpay for him, if parise wants to be a red wing, he’ll be a red wing….ironically the exact same situation his current team is in…

    once parise’s destination is understood, then you can consider penner and all other options….

    doesn’t this remind you to a much smaller extent a kovy/frolov scenario….?

    penner could be the victim of turning down other teams offers to remain a king…but he might have to wait until dl us convinced that he won’t get zach….

    @Duncanz,

    Since you brought up JJ, here is a story that I’ve wanted to share for a while. It speaks to his character as a person.

    He was/is one of my ex-wifes favorite players and she had a infant-sized jersey that she wanted to have him sign. Through a short chain of people, she knew someone who worked with his little brother who was playing hockey here in SoCal. However, he was traded before that could get worked out.

    She went on his website and emailed him explaing the situation. He replied saying, “Send it to my paernts and they will make sure I get it and I’ll sign it and ship it back”. He provided their address and shortly the jersey was sent.

    A few weeks ago, it returned. Signed as requested. In addition, there was an adult sized Kings T-shirt signed and personalized to my ex-wife, along with 3 of his hockey cards, including his rookie card, all autographed as well and a nice personal note.

    Say what you want about his on-ice performance, and I don’t disagree about any of that, but it shows what a nice guy he is and what nice guys Hockey players are in general.
