Robitaille talks Quick, roster, Game 6 puck

Luc Robitaille, the Kings’ president of business operations, was on the ”NHL Live” show on the NHL Network this afternoon with E.J. Hradek and Bill Pidto. Robitaille discussed Jonathan Quick’s soon-to-be-signed 10-year contract extension (reportedly for $58 million) as well as the Kings’ possible offseason plans and his thoughts on what might be the ultimate fate of the missing Game 6 puck…

ROBITAILLE: “Jonathan, he’s one of the players we’ve had for a long time in our organization. From Dean and Ron Hextall and our entire organization’s point of view, it was very important that we get things right with him. Everybody saw the kind of player he was in the playoffs. We’ve known, for the last three years, the kind of player he is. He’s putting up amazing statistics throughout that time. So it was important for us and our plan, for the next seven, eight, 10 years, knowing that we have Drew (Doughty) with us and Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, to make sure that he was part of our organization during that time.’’

(on locking up young players to long contracts, and still retaining some flexibility…)
ROBITAILLE: “We want to build something special. Everybody knows Dean Lombardi is a great builder. You look back three or four years ago, and it’s safe to say that we took our time and we did things right. That being said, keep in mind that even though it looks good now, we signed Anze Kopitar before he became the player he is today, and we signed a few of those guys before. We took a gamble and it was the right gamble. That being said, they are being fairly compensated. At the same time, they’re helping our team. All these kids, they want to win. They want to have the opportunity to win more than one championship, and we feel we’re in a good position now, and for the next few years, that we’re going to compete for it every year.’’

(on the Kings’ plans for the rest of this summer, roster-wise…)
ROBITAILLE: “We’re going to look, like everyone else, at what’s available (on the free-agent market) next week. At the same time, we want to make sure that we’re talking to all of our guys that helped us win the Stanley Cup. This is one of those situations where we’re pretty happy with the team we have right now.’’

(on whether the Kings will get back the missing Game 6 puck…)
ROBITAILLE: “It’s kind of funny. I’m not sure we’re going to do a full investigation, and call the FBI, but we certainly would like to see if we can get that puck. We’ve looked at videos, and we’re asking some questions around. It’s something we’d like to have. Our guys, in every series, collected in every game the puck that they won with. That was kind of like our team thing. Looking back, Jordan Nolan has it on his stick, and he’s so excited that he just turned around and let it go. That’s something that we’re going to tell him. Next time, if he has a chance to win the Stanley Cup, he should make sure he hangs on to that puck. It’s one of those things that, we’ve love to have it back. We’re going to ask as many questions as we can.’’

ROBITAILLE: “It’s been amazing. I’ve been here since 1986. I left a few times but I always kept a place here. I’ve said to everyone. The L.A. Kings have always been my franchise. They’ve treated me and my family really good. To be part of the group that won the Stanley Cup, it’s something very special. One thing that I notice, being in the front office you realize how many people you touch, how many people care. There are season-seat holders who have been there 45 years, some for 25 years. There were a lot of grown men crying in the stands. That certainly made it really special for every one of us, and certainly me and my family included.’’
