@Duncanz, I agree on Penner and I think depending upon the nature of the wrist surgery he needs he is a huge opportunity for DL. He’s coming off two rough years, needing surgery in the offseason, and other than his performance in the playoffs has almost no negotiating leverage. But his upside is huge, especially on the line with Richards and Carter, and he has responded well to a certain rancher’s cattle prod. I think to get a guy who still has legitimate 20-30 goal potential on a bargain, “make good” contract is something you at least have to try to do.

DL Feels the whole team can improve by 3 to 5% physically & mentally fit ,then thought that Carter & MR are the key to having a better season for the kings trying to win another cup!
LD & DS already preparing the team that all the other NHL TEAMS will be targeting then starting at game 1!

Totally agree about Quick and Penner based on what I read the other day and heard on the above NHL Network interview.
Personally, this is what I think DL is up to. Sign Quick so he knows what he has left to spend on the front end. All the while he’s dealing with Quick he’ll be feeling out what it will take to get Parise. He should now know that if Parise is going to work out there will be some signs. The Rangers knew they had Richards. If no signs, then he can come back to Penner if DL doesn’t love anyone else on the market. The key will be the signs he gets from Parise/Agent. He’s also going to have lined up some deals for Bernier that might bring offense or picks.

I agree pretty much with your take on Parise. I think he stays with NJ but Pittsburgh wouldn’t be a huge surprise. The Kings are a possibility but a little bit of a longshot right now.

@Crown Royal, @CB14, While I feel that Parise would like to stay in NJ…I am not sure with there money problems that they can afford to give Parise what he wants. Especially a front loaded deal. As for the Kings being long shots I feel now that we have won the Cup that is going to change, where we are going to become frontrunners. I really feel that we will be up against Detroit. Pittsburgh and Philly both need defense more then offense. They would be best going after Suter not Parise. For the first time I feel really optimistic that we will get a top UFA. However I do know it isn’t the end of the world if we don’t get him. I will be disappointed but that will end once the season starts.

The cool thing is, even when we were pretty much on a roll at the end of the Reg season, and on a steamroll for the best part of the playoffs, there were identifiable and dominable improvements to be made.
So if most of the issues are able to be addressed, and training camp and the pre-season go well, the Kings should go from strength to strength and be a huge force in the Reg season in 2012/13!
Now it’s up to the “wigs” in charge of the CBA to make sure they allow that to happen.

Is anyone suffering from a form of PSCVS (Post Stanley Cup Victory Syndrome) characterized by what the French would describe as “la belle indifference?” For example, when you see the stock market tanking and note that your net worth is rapidly evaporating, do you find yourself watching replays of the final moments of Game 6 with Nick Nickson’s call dubbed in and smiling like an idiot? If your wife tearfully announces that she’s leaving you for someone else, do you find yourself telling her that you only wish she can come close to experiencing the same degree of ecstasy YOU felt when Dustin Brown hoisted the Cup? If your boss tells you that the company has no choice but to downsize and, regrettably, there will be no need for you to show up tomorrow, do you find yourself essentially ignoring him/her as you attempt to rapidly calculate exactly how you’re going to pay for next season’s King’s tickets (and/or your cable tv subscription)? Not that these events have actually transpired in my life (well…not two out of three, anyway), but life definitely feels different.

it’s more like cap circumcision versus cap circumvention….
and speaking of mega , log-term deals…..
the upcoming crosby proposal has been rumored to be around a 10year/$100mil deal…and of course, they will take advantage of the loophole kenny holland created back when he was trying to finance three or four of his core players….

I am really happy with Stoll and Fraser resigning. Quick is the biggie but I think he wants to return and won’t hold out for the last dollar unlike someone(cough and another cough as I am again waiting to find out whats up with him). Penner had about a $1.5 mil year plus add a mil for his good payoff performance. So assuming his wrist surgery is not a big deal offer him $2.5 plus maybe a performance bonus and lets see if he wants to stay or see if he can get more elsewhere. I really want to like the guy but too many frustrations with his laziness during the regular season. I’ll give him some slack for the divorce but DL and DS expect 100+% and that is what we get from most of the players and what we need for a REPEAT!

If his wrist is that bad, he wouldn’t have been able to play the way he did in the playoffs. I remember him hurting his wrist. I think he even sat out a few games. The problem was his lack of effort, not ‘poor play.’ There were plenty of players under TM that played ‘poorly’ but you never questioned their heart. Penner’s heart has (and will continue to be) in question until he shows he can give 100% shift after shift, game after game. You know, like he did in the playoffs.

@variable,
Will he enlist DS’s help on only this one, or on all signings, re-signings and trades?
They both know already and have done since season’s end.
Also, according to DL, he has had multiple discussions with Penns throughout the season and since.
I guess his fate depends on the potential of the UFA market, not on his own well understood potential, at this stage.
Given all circumstances, I absolutely don’t see a reason to simply let him go, unless they feel getting smaller and more mobile in the immediate term will be the strategy.

why he should not return to the form he showed when he scored 30+ goals…

@Real 7, I think if DL signs him, he will be convinced (in his gut) that Penner is ready to recommit to hockey and if that happens, I believe Penner will have his best year as a pro numbers-wise. But you have to remember that even though he put up points in Edmonton, they were hardly happy with his commitment. Sure, numbers are good, but having a loafer is not good for the team. There are other factors that affect the team.
@Deke’r, It’s safe to say if I were GM, we’d be the worst team in the history of pro sports.
After listening to that interview I think DL wants Penner back. Healthy, committed and dedicated to use his massive body all season long in the same manner that he did during the playoffs.
Two reasons why I think it’ll happen:
1. DL seems to put quite a bit of emphasis on how well liked DP is among his teammates. The locker room ‘chemistry factor’ does carry some weight.
2. Darryl Sutter guided, coerced, inspired, threatened or convinced DP to play like a man possessed right after the media had their field day with his divorce. I see DL relying on DS to get the same out of DP during the regular season.
OK…three reasons.
3. DL thinks getting Parise is a longer shot that most would think, so he rather save money and bring back DP and Kings to complete a repeat with the same team.

@Gustavo,
Agree that DL wants Penner back due to his performance and physical presence in the playoffs. Also, believe that DL wants more of the same from Richards and Carter as well. If all 3 players contribute to the checking part of the game they are unstoppable. The same goes for Williams and Kopitar. This is the 3% improvement I can see from all the Kings players next season.

It’s one thing for Sutter to motivate a guy. It’s another to do a heart transplant on a guy. The question is whether or not DL believes Dustin wants to commit to being a better player. If at any point during the season you answered ‘yes’ to that your, sanity would be questioned, which is why I think he’ll say no in the end.

It was reported that after the third PP goal, they had to put him in a straight jacket and medicate him. He was heard saying “OMG, OMG, what are they doing? They are doing it all wrong?!!!” Rumor has it that DL was able to read his lips from his executive box and thus gained a deeper insight as to the “Kompon Phenomena.” Rumor also has it that while a Cup usually makes everything seem better, it also makes you want more, amd the words “more” and “Kompon” don’t go together, such as “More movement”, “more aggressive,” and “more PP goals.”

Shame on Lewis for being at the crease! Shame on King for that power move! Deflections! Traffic in front! Efficient north-south east-west movement! Ugh!!!
Regarding DL’s comments about getting better and no being satisfied. MAGIC JOHNSON was the best I’ve ever seen at that in any sport. He wins a championship as a rookie but he was still raw while being the MVP in that title.
After another championship he learned the sky hook. After another title he learned the three pointer. After another he learned to play better defense. It NEVER ENDED with him. And these weren’t little things he did in games for fun. He’d win finals games with them all. Oh and somewhere along the way he mastered the fast break like never before and never since.
Hint, hint… Drew Doughty.

Also, there is another person by the name of John Wooden who would be the ideal role model for the Kings on how to win another SC. An extra 3% by one or two individual players is not necessary if everyone just does their jobs and executes as a team.

I think playing for TM also screwed up Penner, like it did for many others…There is no way he would have thrived under that kind of system….Once his issues cleared and had more time in the offensive zone with worthwhile players, his production went up..
Why do some people insist on simply blaming the player? Hasnt everyone’s #’s dropped? Even our best players languished at times..I will say this again: I place a high value on team chemistry, and him staying is an upside on that kind of intangible…to me, this team is like the Dirty Dozen..all about effort, playing for each other…they will push each other to be better next year, you will see!!

@KC23, I disagree. Parise is a good fit and his play during the finals had more to do with the way the Kings were playing him and the fact that Kovy was hurt. That is why he wasn’t effective in the finals. I want Parise as a King and I believe that DL does too. He is going to go hard after him. Whether we end up getting him though will remain to be seen.
Kovy being hurt causing him to play poorly, not to mention how effective the kings were defensively against the line, had most to do with Zach not doing well. Zach is a great player and a top 3 guy. The type of player that this team needs. He is strong in character, captain material, led his team to the finals and has feed and can finish. This is really the final piece of the puzzle of us getting the cup. Since we got it a year earlier then most thought, it is not the time to step back on your laurels and stay with the stautus quo. Remember this team barely made the playoffs and had lighting strike at the right time.

We have the cap to sign him this season — without causing any trouble next season either. It isn’t until 2014 that we would have to make tough decisions.

Sure, it would be great to have him on our team. But the truth is that we won the cup without the services of Kovi, B. Richards or any other big dollar free agent on the team. Bottom line; we don’t need him or his huge potential contract to bring the cup home again.

However now I feel DL, DS and the Kings have veritably bottled that lightning J_R is talking about, but for this very reason signing a huge star (with contract to boot) is a lot less of a coup, or a necessary gamble as it would have been had the unthinkable happened …. that you looked down at the end of the Kings season in early April and realized you’d gnawed your way down to your knuckles!

Sorry. I disagree. The Kings were UNlucky to have:
1. a poor system to play with (TM’s)
2. Bad start with DD missing training camp due to the contract dispute
3. Concussion to Mike Richards
4. Concussion (reg season ending) to Simon Gagne.
5. Injuries and marital problems to Penner.
6. No Carter till late in the season.
7. No Nolan till late in the season.
8. No King till late in the season.
9. No Darryl Sutter till almost the end of 2011.
This team actually run out of luck in March. BAD LUCK, that is.It was their bad luck that almost cost them a spot on the playoffs. That does not translate to “got lucky they made the playoffs”, like you said.
And as much as I like the thought of Z. Parise as a good fit to the top lines, I do not think it’ll happen. Penner that comes back healthy, fit and inspired would be a lot more satisfying to watch. Save the money, DL Just my two cents.

If I was GM for a day I’d let go Gagne,Penner,Richardson and Fraser and sign Parise to a 7 year 7 million dollar deal with a 11 million bonus. I’d also enlarge the roles of Loktionov and Clifford and make them full time regulars(Regular season and play-offs). I’d bring over Moller and Holloway and in Buddy’s case let bygones be bygones. In this moves we add even more skill and talent jsu as much speed and as much height though maybe not as much physicality.

@Gustavo, You’re probably too young but do you think the dynastic Candians teams of the seventies sat on their hands,NO! They went out and made their team better year after year. I’d like the Kings to reel off 5 Cups and you can’t do that by standing pat…You guys are all in the Cup orgy mode still, talk to me when it has worn off! By the way I agree with the Stemmer he has some good points too bad you guys can’t see it…

@tellmeY, dont you know that the Kings are front runners for (and can afford) every big free agent every summer? and if they dont land the big fish then Lombardi and Leiweke must be tarred and feathered!
“the Kings need a sniper!”
“the Kings need a 40 goal scorer!”
This is the best summer ever, one small reason being that theres an easy comeback to all the Kings fans who say “we need Kovalchuck” (2010), “we need Brad Richards!” (2011), “we need Parise!” (2012). We dont need anyone, we just need to bring back the same guys who underachieved the entire regular season, and could have played even better throughout the playoffs.

When ou have a team of winners, why go looking for trouble to upset the chemistry these guys have and seem to really like one another? Where, in our fantast, would Parise fit in? As for Penner, if his hometown discount is reasonable, sign him. He is, afterall, a fan favorite and we should count for something. WE WANTPANCAKES!!!

@Optomistic,
“He is, afterall, a fan favorite”
I wouldn’t go that far! Any fan with half a memory knows how horrible Penner can be as a hockey player. Sure, most people like Penner as a person (including me) but you must separate the person from the player. If we could have Penner only at the playoffs, then great, but that’s not realistic. Dean must consider the nightmare of a season he had and his past proclivities towards loafing it when offering Dustin a contract. At this point, I’d say the chance of him returning are less than 50%.

Scot Reply:

@Optomistic, & Paul
Paulie, I agree with you, I think Penner’s return is a “fat chance.” … … It was either that, or “slim to none.”
Opto – I don’t think the Kings will sign Parise. I just think he is going to sign somewhere like Pittsburgh or Detroit. But … When you say, “where would Parise fit in?” The answer is on the top line Left Wing. It doesn’t matter when you sign a player that good. You make room for him. No matter what team Parise signs with, he is going to be one of their top line wingers. Maybe you meant, Where would he fit in “under the cap”? That’s the only place I see him having trouble fitting in.
But like I said, it’s all moot, because there’s probably less than a 3% chance he signs with the Kings.

He is still recovering. If he was resigned, he wouldn’t be 100% to start the season, but once he is 100% he could quite possibly be a very good player for us (IF he is resigned). He has been raised in the Kings system, he injured himself in service to the Kings organization, he was around when Sutter made changes, and he knows all the players, and coaching staff.
I could see him going for a fresh start somewhere else, but I also see him being welcomed back. Either way, I hope he recovers completely.

@AliCali, We don’t even know if he is in north america
Take the last 22-23 games of the past regular season, add the 20 post season games, and over a span exceeding half a regular season, both Brown and Kopitar averaged over 1 pt/game. That projects to two guys that _could_ take a run at 90(+?) points and the border of ArtRossLand (last season Stamkos and Giroux were #s 2 & 3 with totals in the 90s).
On the one hand, one could be satisfied that having a Richards/Carter line has had the side effect of elevating Brown and Kopitar to places among the League’s elite forwards, but Dean Lombardi obviously isn’t satisfied if that side effect–nice as it is–is most of what the team gets out of Richards/Carter. I agree with Lombardi, he cuts those guys mighty big paychecks.
Same topic:
No one knows if Brown and Kopitar can continue to score at a point-a-game-plus level (overlooking that they’re both also gold in terms of playing solid ‘plus’ games 85×200), but they could fall off quite a bit and still significantly out-produce Carter/Richards. It would seem Carter especially needs to find a means of cranking up his work ethic (I’m thinking he has to have the worst Corsi / Fenwick numbers on the regular roster–bad things happen in front of Quick when Carter is out cruising lackadaisically).
Anyway, good on Lombardi for specifically challenging Carter and Richards.
Change of topic:
When Lombardi signs Dwight King, the motivation to re-up Dustin Penner will diminish, no doubt. But after many months of lambasting Penner (hey, it’s been a popular hobby), count me among those who’d like to see the big pancake boy wearing black and white next fall. The guy clearly does bring camaraderie and cohesiveness to the room and rink. I don’t think he’ll be chasing 30 goals at this point, I don’t think he’ll have a long career, but it seems that he may have a couple of good years yet, and perhaps the worst of his personal issues are now slipping into the past. Slash his salary in half, I think he’ll be happy to put the crown shirt back on.
Change of topic:
Lombardi isn’t going to expend a lot of anxious energy in the free agent market, which is good. As a champion with potential to repeat, _maybe_ someone would accept less than full market value to lace up in LA. Don’t hold your breath. Lombardi isn’t.
Change of topic:
Jarret Stoll and Wayne Gretzky’s daughter.
Change of topic:
A healthy Simon Gagne is probably too much to hope for. Just a fact, I’m afraid. So I’m thinking Lombardi should at least try to re-up Scott Parse (the guy has toughed his way through physical problems that _can_ be completely resolved by the surgeries he’s had, he’s got both skills and grit, you know he’s hungry, and he’s affordable).
Change of topic:
The general manager and the captain took a whole LOT of heat in these comment forums over a period of several months. Turns out . . .

@wes, Another very thoughful post.
Only thing I would take issue with is I think you’re foxed by Carter’s smoothe skating style and also not giving him credit for his excellent positional defense. He’s extremely responsible and always works to get on the right side of the puck.
I wouldn’t describe his style as “lackadaisacal” at all. I would term it composed.
Sharks (no, not them) cruise most of the time, by the way.
Also, as well as righting the axis when he arrived, he came up big when he needed to for the Kings, especially in the playoffs.
His experience was pretty much invaluable.
So I would say I am delighted with having Jeff Carter in the lineup to this point!
The size of the contract is going to be a lot to play up to, but if he stays on track I think he’s going to do just fine for the foreseeable.

In another vein, I’d like to offer this as a point of discussion:
http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/28/the-hall-of-fame-case-for-rogie-vachon/
After all, since the Warlords of Hockey from Toronto have elevated their own (Sundin = Mats4Poker…), while spurning their young spirited Apprentice of Punishment (Shanahan = BrendanOfTheVideo), we from the West can always complain about the long-forgotten accomplishments of Rogatien Vachon (He of ‘Vachon-the-save!’)…
At least we can have something to galumph about…

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, Yeah. True. It’s not like the Rock ‘n Roll HoF not wanting Rush in their myopic club– everybody knows Rush is too good for the silly R&R Hall of Fame anyway– but the Hockey Hall of Fame is a legitimate thing. There will just never be enough west coast love (Rogie played most of his career in LA, where his numbers were outstanding) to give Vachon his due. I wouldn’t mind seeing Gilles Meloche getting a little appreciation either, he played on mostly terrible teams, so his numbers weren’t so good, but he was an outstanding goalie in that era as well.

Simply more reason for Rogie to be in the HHOF…

Also, I’ve been away for a while and I was wondering if the DVD with Bob and Jim calling the last game is out yet?? Thanks for any info and looking forward to coming home in August!

Was there an article from ‘Our Beloved Leader’ that listed all the possible 2012 FAs on the other NHL clubs?
Anyhow, today Dustin Brown’s favorite dancing partner, Shane Doan, announced he that will dip his twinkly toes in the FA waters.
I’ll bet a lot of us would have another huge helping of crow comng if this guy were to be picked up by the Kings.
Doan turns 36 in October and is just coming off 5 yrs @ 4.55 M.

@Duncanz, I hear you, but as is always the case, everyone has a different opinion. Sure, playoff performances are great, but all DP proved is that his history with under performing during his contract until the last possible minute. Granted, that helped us win a Stanley Cup, but nothing in his past shows that he has changed his ways.
Whitney is 40, an old guy. but he put up 77 points last season. 24 goals I think, and 53 assists. Something like that. He’d be on the second line. Can you imagine him setting up Carter? Dude will have a 35 goal season (in theory) at least. Plus he’s good for at least 15-20.
Put it this way… Whitney’s cap hit was 3 mil. Let’s say Penner’s is 3 mil as well. I’d much rather have Whitney for 2 years than Penner for 2 (length is hypothetical).
Purely my opinion, but I like it. I like it a lot

If the Kings can sign Penner for about 1.25 to 1.75 million the should sign him. The Kings will have 10 UFA at the end of next season. And there are a lot of important players so they will need the money then to lock up some good players.
