Just got off the phone with Dean Lombardi, who gave updates on a few topics. Full interview to come, but here are highlights…
– Lombardi was pleased to bring back Jarret Stoll and Colin Fraser, and indicated that Stoll probably would have — in a money-heavy, player-thin free-agent market this summer — received more money than he did in re-signing with the Kings.
– The Kings are still open to bringing back Dustin Penner, but Lombardi said Penner will require some type of wrist surgery this summer and that Lombardi and Darryl Sutter will discuss Penner at some point soon.
– Lombardi said it has not yet been determined who will replace Jamie Kompon on the coaching staff, but said he wanted Sutter to make his own choices in terms of building a staff.
– The Kings gave permission to the Philadelphia Flyers organization to hire Terry Murray, who is expected to be the head coach of the AHL affiliate. Lombardi said Murray would get a Stanley Cup ring from the Kings.
Glad TM gets a ring.

While its nice that TM is getting a ring from the Kings organization, lets not get overly emotional and wanting him to raise the cup, and demanding that he be hired back in some capacity as well. He did a great job at teaching young players how to play a responsible defensive system, and that was needed at that time, but it took Daryl Sutter to get this team to yet another level.

So there we are!
First news from the hidden injuriy depth chart.
Penn’s has sick wrists.
MR had double wrist surgery in May of last year, incidentally.
At times it was hard to tell if the lack of coordination he suffered from for that long period was due to this or lingering effects from his concussion. In the end, you’d guess it was the latter since his skating seemed to be suffering as well.
Anyhow, DP has got to be wished the best for a full recovery.
Hopefully, the doctors say, “We can rebuild him!”
Get ‘er done!

We need to bring back Penner because there is no big UFA players that we will receive. We can sign him to a 3.0 cap hit and still sign Quick. Just sign Penner to a one year or two year deal.

Terry Murray is a BIG reason this team is where it is DEFENSIVELY. He was not the right coach to finish, but he WAS the right coach to start. He is a TEACHING COACH. He helped guide and build one of the best defenses in the current NHL.
I’m really stoked to see he gets a ring because he fully deserves one. I’d have no problem with him receiving a day with the Cup. Without his defensive structure, we don’t hold that thing up this year. Give credit where it’s due folks. TM is not perfect, but he was instrumental in our Cup win this year. Coach Sutter would tell you that for sure and probably throw in a coupla ‘Awesome’ and ‘Right’ quotes while doing it.
Glad to see he’s landed a job and I can see why Philly wants him. Their Defense needs some help. Teaching their prospects at Adirondack will only help the big club. TM will flourish in the AHL. His teaching abilities will do wonders for those kids.

Yup – good for Murray.
There was a point in his tenure in LA when he crossed the line and got “Peter Principled”, you know, elevated to the highest level of in competence.
Terry gave the Kings all he had to give. Our defense is a product of that. He just didn’t have the wherewithall to meld the pieces of talent he had into a cohesive unit. Sutter did.
Good luck to Terry. His young players will benefit from his teachings.

Philly is really addressing their D now after just trading for Luke Schenn. That and having Terry coach their prospects, watch out east coast! They really need to rid themselves of Bryzgalov and that ridiculous contract, but nobody will take it. Bryz was HORRIBLE in the playoffs and a better D- core/system should at least shore him up a little bit.

Sometimes the world just doesn’t make sense. For instance, the Nobel Peace prize is based upon the guy who invented dynamite. And TM gets a ring… That’s ok, it’s out of my hands.
Credit really goes to Lombardi on this one. That was VERY generous.
If TM had admitted that he was wrong, or ever made a mistake, I would give him a pass -and not just that, I would be behind him and supportive 1000%. But he was beyond self reproach to the end, and that is why I don’t support him.

@KingsFan100,
Totally agree. I remember way back when it seemed like Rogie was the only defense for us. The game has changed a lot since then, but winning teams have always had scoring, good defense & a goalie who makes the big stop. TM built the foundation, but couldn’t finish the job. DS was able to get them over the hump by letting the players play ( being aggressive) & not have them play afraid of making a mistake. What happened this year was some fortunate situations ( I think the Canucks would have been a tougher challenge w/ both the Sedins), staying healthy, building confidence, & playing as a team..I’ve been a Kings since I was little, and was able to go to Game 2 & see one of the victories. Now I don’t have to listen to my friend ( a Canes fan) talk about winning the Cup, because we HAVE ONE TOO!!!!!
