A Kings source has confirmed an initial L.A. Times report that assistant coach Jamie Kompon will not return to the staff next season, per the choice of the team. Further, John Stevens and Bill Ranford are expected to return. It’s not yet known who Darryl Sutter might choose to fill the position. Bernie Nicholls, who spent half of last season with the team and served as a “consultant,” is not believed to be interested in a full-time coaching role (or at least wasn’t, as of a couple months ago).
Interesting side note is that it would seem Kompon was working under a shorter contract than the rest of the staff. Kings management and other coaches (other than Sutter) are under contract through 2013.
Oh my goodness, guess all the fans got there wish?
Go Kings Go!

I’m not saying that Bernie can’t do it; I’m just saying he hasn’t done it on any level at any time to date. I would hope the Kings will at least see who is available first before making a decision. Perhaps someone that’s actually been coaching at Manchester for awhile…

Hey I was saying it all along… The Kings hustled the NHL by pretending to not be able to score goals all season, then scored in the playoffs. Going into the finals everyone said, “Hey, at least they can’t score power play goals, there’s a chance…” In the final round they completed the hustle and had six power play goals in six games against a legend of a goalie! Purdy dang good, in my book.

I had a vision today that he was cleaning out his office…THEN THIS!
TM and JK were out of touch as this team matured. I always felt our “offense” & “power kill” were designed not to get scored on but they forgot one basic element that DS knew all along..if you have the puck you can’t get scored on. DS told the boys to go get that 50/50 puck, go chase that puck down and get it back, don’t wait for something to happen, make something happen.

[Reply]
luc20rules Reply:
June 22nd, 2012 at 5:05 pm
@Gmo, Some of us work.
i just want to make a point about kompon and the pp situation…:
should jamie have been let go…?
yes…
BUT…and this is a big BUTT…
every player in the nhl has learned everything they can about what to do on the pp…there are no secrets…
from the minute these guys stepped on the ice as peewee’s, from the time they reached the junior level and right through their professional careers, they have been coached on every possible way to play on the pp…there’s very little, if anything, these guys can be taught at this point….
what it comes down to is EXECUTION….
and that mainly falls on the players laps…
the person who takes the fall for the players lack of execution is and will always be the coach…
i’m not trying defend kompon by any means…we are in a results-driven league and clearly throughout the season, our pp struggled mightily….and as a result, he’s been replaced…
but if you really analyze how ALL nhl teams plan their pp’s, they are virtually the same, with some minor quirks here and there…
now jamie could be called out for calling the wrong plays at the wrong time – that’s very valid…
but to put the blame solely on kompon is not acceptable to me…it could be a very similar reaction to kompon by the players comparable to tm – i don’t know…
but execution is the key to any pp…our three goal outburst during our game 6 clincher is testimony to that….
and i wouldn’t jump on the pumpernicholl’s bandwagon just yet…it’s not because i don’t think he’s not capable of doing it…i just don’t think he wants to do it and is quite comfortable in his current role…

@variable, Certain coaches do make a difference. Sutter made a difference for this team going forward. There were several people on this site that said it wasnt TM’s fault that the team couldnt get past the 1st round, that it was the players fault. That is so much crap! If that was true, then why have a head coach in the first place?

@puck73,
there’s no doubt that certain coaches can make all the difference in the world…and as you duly noted appropriately what sutter did for us…
i think i mentioned the following above…:
“should jamie have been let go…?
yes…”
and…
“now jamie could be called out for calling the wrong plays at the wrong time – that’s very valid…”
and…
“but to put the blame solely on kompon is not acceptable to me…it could be a very similar reaction to kompon by the players comparable to tm – i don’t know…”
so i do concede there were a whole lotta stinking going on with our pp all season long…
but, again, players have to execute…for a combination of the reasons we’ve stated…

@variable, Agree, about Bernie and Kompon to an extent, but the simple matter is Kompon called for the umbrella stategy way too much for the players we have. We don’t have snipers we have gritty guys that will get to scoring areas and maybe make things happen. Brown was moving found gaps and got deflection/shots from scoring areas. I think most of us have been stressing the need for players to be in motion with and without the puck to make all PK players make a decision creating mistakes and openning gaps in the PK D. While I understand that you have too mix up stategies on the PP, Kompon called for the umbrella way too often.

@variable, You make some good points. My main problem with JK is that it seemed like all the other teams had figured out the Kings PP after it’s unreal performance against Vancouver in the playoffs 2 years ago, and JK did nothing to counter the other teams defense against us. If anything he made it worse. No movement whatsoever, hardly any back door passes, yet he kept throwing the same guys back out there in their same exact positions. If you don’t like that Kopi doesn’t move the puck around from the half boards, then don’t keep putting him there. It was the same thing over and over and over and over again. Kopi passes to Drew, Drew passes to Kopi, Kopi passes back to Drew, Drew passed to whoever was on the other point side, that player passed back to Drew, and Drew finally ended up taking a slap shot only to see his shot get blocked because the player guarding him was 4 feet in front of him and knew exactly what he was going to do.
It’s no coincidence that the only d-man who ever looked for a back door goal, VV, was the one guy who was new to the Kings and hadn’t had it drilled into his head that that was not acceptable.

@variable, I agree with all your points and even the champs have some soul searching to do when the season is over as far as where they came up short and where they could have been better. The players will look to do better next year on the PP and a fresh perspective will help. My real problem with Kompon, and it’s purely conjecture, is that he didn’t appear to have any connection whatsoever with the players. I saw it watching practices at the TSC and I saw it in games on the bench, especially during a timeout. After a couple whiteboard chats during timeouts, I even thought I saw players skate away shaking their heads or rolling their eyes. X’s and O’s aside, in a situation like that you’ve got to make a change.

The girl made fun of him, so he forced the girl, in front of the players, out of the bar/club, forced her into the cab, forced her into his house, and forced her to have sex with him.
Neither his teammates, the patrons at the bar/club, the people walking the streets by the cab, the cab driver, nobody, said anything was up with what was happening. Nor did she scream at the bar/club, on the street outside the bar/club, in the cab, outside Doughty’s house, nor inside his house.

Kompon sucked. The PP performance in the Finals was the result of DS taking control, changing from a “PP Unit” strategy with a half-board set to a “Standard Line” strategy with a moving attack set. The only thing I worry about now is will Santa still bring me anything in December? Nice going DL, this is going to totally make our team better next year and actually help to attract more offensive free agents. @justlu, Thats the problem, he made too much money for little to no results. Im not sorry he lost his job. He made enough money from the kings for the last five years to retire comfortably. He was a TERRIBLE assistant coach and the numbers for our PP this year says it all. With guys like Richards, Kopitar, Carter, Brown, and Penner there is no excuse for the lack of offense on the power play. and Im willing to bet that he will go to another team and totally butcher their offense too.
[Reply]
Kings should hire Steve Martinson. He’s won in the old IHL, also in ECHL. His teams usually went deep into playoffs, and regardless he always had good enforcers. He teaches a good style; defense first. I’d like to see him under Sutter. They both hold players accountable which is necessary. Kings players & Sutter will get along well so long as Kings produce & compete. Now we’ve done it all, can’t help but think it was a miracle how things came together so City of Angels could beat the Devils. Bummer is after 2013 when several contracts come up. It was no fun watching Quackers getting carved up after their 2007 win. Sooner or later the coaches message gets old, and he too is gone. And rebuilding begins again… But next year we have an excellent chance.
Question re 1993 team. How good was Hrudey? At one point that team had 3 goalies (Rick Knickle for brief time in Feb). How much of those losses can be pegged on Hrudey? Taking into account that at that time also Roy was peaking. I’d like to know your thoughts on this.
