Will Quick win the Vezina?

Back to hockey for a while… First, the Montreal Canadiens announced today that they have hired former Kings forward Ethan Moreau as a scout. Also, the NHL Awards will be handed out tonight in Las Vegas, with coverage to begin at 4 p.m. Pacific time on NBC Sports Network. Jonathan Quick is one of three finalists for the Vezina Trophy, while Dustin Brown is one of three finalists for the Mark Messier Leadership Award.

Voting for the Vezina — among NHL general managers — was concluded at the regular season, so the award will not reflect playoff success. That will hurt Quick, who is a finalist along with Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators. None of the three has won the Vezina, and the regular-season numbers are very close…

Lundqvist: 39-18-5 record, 1.97 goals-against average, .930 save percentage, eight shutouts.
Quick: 35-21-13 record, 1.95 goals-against average, .929 save percentage, 10 shutouts.
Rinne: 43-18-8 record, 2.39 goals-against average, .923 save percentage, five shutouts.

In a statistical sense, each goalie brings something to the table. Quick has the lowest goals-against average and most shutouts, Lundqvist has the highest save percentage and Rinne has the most wins. At the risk of falling into the “East Coast bias” trap, when the race appears to be tight, look East. I would have voted for Quick, but I’d be surprised if Lundqvist didn’t win.

Brown, along with Ryan Callahan of the Rangers and Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes, is up for the Mark Messier Leadership Award, personally selected by the Hall of Famer to recognize “the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season.”

Here’s the rest of the major award finalists, as well as a chance for you to vote as to who you think will win each of the awards…

HART (MVP) — Henrik Lundqvist (Rangers), Evgeni Malkin (Penguins), Steven Stamkos (Lightning).
NORRIS (defenseman) — Zdeno Chara (Bruins), Erik Karlsson (Senators), Shea Weber (Predators).
CALDER (rookie) — Adam Henrique (Devils), Gabriel Landeskog (Avalanche), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Oilers).
SELKE (defensive forward) — David Backes (Blues), Patrice Bergeron (Bruins), Pavel Datsyuk (Red Wings).
LADY BYNG (sportsmanship) — Brian Campbell (Panthers), Jordan Eberle (Oilers), Matt Moulson (Islanders).
JACK ADAMS (coach) — Ken Hitchcock (Blues), Paul MacLean (Senators), John Tortorella (Rangers).

    As much as I think Quick should win the award, the east coast bias will kick in and Lundqvist will probably win.

    @spidey35, From purely a statistical standpoint, I can not complain if Lundqvist wins. The fact is (regardless of east coast bias), the Eastern Conference plays a much more wide open game. It’s harder having a good GAA against Philly, Pittsburg, Boston etc. than Phx, St Louis, Dallas etc.

    That said, it’s clear from the playoffs that Quick is a better goalie and that should definitely help him next year…

    Paulhb Reply:

    @BringBackButchGoring, The eastern conference also has a lot less travel then the west. If Lundquist were in the west he’d probably have worse stats then he does. I wouldn’t be shocked if Lundy wins but I think the GMs will not show the bias the press would.

    What I don’t get is how Stamkos is nominated for the Hart?? I don’t care if you score 100 goals, if you don’t make the playoffs how valuable are you really??

    Stuart Reply:

    @spidey35, Lundy will win because at the time of voting, my guess is that a lot of voters predicted that he’d have a great chance at the Cup+Conn Smythe so IMO they wanted to make sure he got the Vezina just in case their thoughts came to fruition. And nobody could argue with them for picking Lundy except for every Kings fan in the world. IDK, but I think nobody has ever taken home all 3 pieces of hardware, have they?

    If the voting were done by the media, I would agree, but the voting is done by the GMs, so it’s hard to say whether there would be an East Coast Bias in this equation. I’m inclined to believe that the GMs, being spread out over the nation, tend to be a little more knowledgeable about the entire league.

    @fuzzerson, This was my thought process as well. It would be difficult to not vote for Lundqvist as the best goalie with him being nominated for the best player in the NHL award. Quick had a great season and put the Kings on his shoulders and into the playoffs but I think Lundqvist will win.

    zulov Reply:

    @Stuart, Thats totally true.

    [Reply]

    Hackwoods Reply:

    @zulov, And that is why Lundy will win the Vezina. How could a goalie be nominated for the overall MVP of the league (Hart trophy) and not win the best goalie award? Unless the other Vezina finalists are also up for the Hart, but that is not the case. The people that did the nominating thought highly enough of Lundy’s play that he is up for both awards.

    Now, I do not agree with a goalie being nominated for the Hart. The Vezina is in place to honor the best goalie in the league, so why they should be eligible for the Hart is not something I agree with. But, since goalies are eligible for the Hart, Quick should certainly be on that list. The Kings are probably in 25th place out of 30 teams if Quick does not play as well as he did, whereas I think the Rangers offense was better than the Kings (226 goals for NYR vs. 194 for LA Kings).

    I also think that Quick was the better goalie than Lundy this regular season. I say this based on the fact even though their GAA and Save Percentages were nearly identical, Quick played in 7 more games than Lundy. That is a good amount. Lundy had more wins, but Wins and Losses are not that heavily weighted in my opinion when trying to figure out the best goalie. The goalie has very little, if not zero, control over the team offense, and if a team does not score, the goalie cannot win. The goalie does have control over his save percentage, and Quick was right there. A goalie also has control over his GAA even though both save % and GAA should also include # of shots per game faced. Quick faced 27, and Lundy 28. That is also very close.

    So, the fact that Quick and Lundy are very equal in all stats, I still think that even though Lundy had more wins, Quick played in more games and had more shutouts, so Quick should win, but again, the fact that Lundy is up for the Hart, the winner of the Vezina was already established when the Hart nominations were made.

    You know though, a lot of this is about marketing/working in the League’s superstars.
    It’s the North American way.
    It was a tough year for the NHL, with a lot of the elite players, such as Lidstrom, Crosby, Pronger, Hall, Letang, Mike Green, Datsyuk even, all missing significant playing time, so no wonder they found a spot to highlight Stamkos’s name.
    Anyway, he’a not doing bad for a guy that was 23, 23 = 46, (9 PP) his rookie season, after a certain “superstar” TV commentator said he was “not ready for the NHL”.

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @Duncanz,

    They may be split 50/50 in the conferences, but geographically, not so much. The only teams you could really say are west coast teams are

    LA
    Anaheim
    San Jose
    Phoenix
    Vancouver
    Calgary
    Edmonton
    Colorado (stretching it)
    Dallas (stretching it)

    Other than that, nearly everyone is much closer to the east than to the west. They get more coverage, watch more games closer to their time zone, etc.

    @vplaza, Also I am assuming that most GM’s, even the ones out “West”, hail from eastern climes which may subconsciously have some influence.

    Duncanz Reply:

    @vplaza, 370455VinSD, What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,
    The GMs collectively are absolutely equally tuned in to each of the other 29 clubs and must essentially carry no regional consideration that might cloud their judgement.
    Why should there even be any doubts about this?
    It’s inconceivable that any NHL GM would rely on a supposed one-sided media to make up his mind for him.
    This would be unprofessional and remiss.
    Wouldn’t be prudent..

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @Duncanz, What vplaza said, and then there’s the fan/media influence itself–the echo chamber of hockey. What are you hearing? I’m hearing “Quick should get it, but Lundqvist will,” not in this echo chamber, but in the greater one outside. That’s because the east coast fans and media are deafening. “Lundy is due.”

    @Dan,

    Before the playoffs most people did not realize just how good Kopi was. For example, on NHL network they kept talking about how he had “bought in” to the defensive side of the game when Sutter got there, basically ignoring the fact that for three years he has controlled all 200 feet of the ice.

    Also, during the preseason Yahoo compiled a list of the top 50 centers in the game and Kopitar was 17th, behind even Mike Richards who was the second center BEHIND KOPITAR. Its just a fact that player out west don’t get the media hype that east coast players do, until they are alone in the spotlight.

    Next season will be different as all the Kings have gained the respect they deserve.

    Personally I’m in the camp that likes his intensity, leadership and will to win. These are the type of guys that other players rally around and they are extremely important to each team. That’s why PHX will absolutely re-sign Doan and probably at a raise.

    What’s pretty amusing is that Brown is pretty polarizing too. A lot of fans and players hate the guy and think he is a dirty player although he is probably one of the cleanest checkers in the NHL.

    Perception is everything, I guess

    Duncanz Reply:

    What @SVELTEY said.
    I’s have nothing against him winning it some other year, per what @BBBG just said,

    That to me was “leadership” in a sense, but leadership from the bottom!
    He only succeeded in dragging down his own good name and dragging down his own gullible teammates into the mire.
    Shane Doan, b-o-o-o.
    I would give him another chance later, as a Kings FA signing, perhaps.
    Fair?

    Hackwoods Reply:

    @mrbrett7, This award is for this 2011-2012 season, not a career type award. And based on the 2011-2012 season where doan was suspended 3 games by the NHL, and fined $2500 by the NHL for a seperate issue, he should not win this award, nor should he have been nominated. I could not find the issues that caused this suspension or the fine, but they are obviously not for being a great leader. I am down on Doan, as I used to like him, but his playoffs antics were childish, and then I saw something from a 2 years ago regarding his elbow to Jamie Benn, and that completed my now dislike for this guy. He is a dirty, cheap, and whinney player. That is all.

    @Gerrerd, to be fair, he apologized and took ownership of his mistake, admitting that he should’ve controlled his emotions better as a leader. I cant believe Sutter isn’t in the running for coach of the year, we went from the lowest scoring team in the regular season to a powerhouse in the post season, we had the best record since he joined and he had everyone playing a full 60 minute game, every game, even in loses. I can’t fathom how Hitchcock is getting so much attention when Sutter truly has done a lot more for the team he joined mid-season.

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @TheAcaciaStrain,

    Probably because Hitchcock pretty much had nothing in his cupboard and managed to get the 2nd seed.

    Sutter, on the other hand, had plenty of talent, albeit, underachieving talent, but who did Hitch have?

    [Reply]

    TheAcaciaStrain Reply:

    @vplaza, Hitchcock vs Sutter happened in the playoffs, he couldn’t manage a win. He couldn’t hold a lead for more than 8 minutes the entire series. Those are prime examples of coaching successes and coaching failures. Sutter definitely succeeded when put head to head vs Hitchcock. Do you think the Kings would have won the stanley cup the way they did without Sutter, or with Terry Murray? No way. That’s not coming from thin air. That’s Sutter’s doing. He deserves credit, and the coaching award.

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @TheAcaciaStrain,

    I am just pointing out that Hitch is probably getting the nod because he turned around a team that was going nowhere with really no big names/talent and made it as the 2nd seed. That’s worth consideration, I think.

    And I’m not minimizing what Sutter did because he did the ultimate in getting this team to win the Cup. But your original point about not understanding why Hitch is getting so much attention is what I was answering. Not that he deserves to win it. The award isn’t for the coach that wins the Cup or who wins head-to-head.

    And I agree that Sutter should have been in the mix for the award.

    For those seriously doubting that there is something to the ECB, the Vezina trophy is probably the one that somehow slants towards one if there ever was one. Since 1981, there have been 2 goalies who were on what I would consider “west coast” teams to win the Vezina. Two!

    Of course, with names like Roy, Hasek and Brodeur accounting for many of those years, some of it is understandable. But really? There haven’t been more goaltenders playing on the west that warranted the award? It’s just the reality that the east had the best goaltenders year in and year out?

    The Jack Adams is not nearly as ECB’d, but since 1981, 5 coaches from the west won. Five! Are the coaches in the east really that much better than the west?

    Obviously (channeling my best Boedkoviously) this isn’t final proof that an ECB exists. But how in the name of Mergatroid do you only see two goalies and five coaches win the top awards in the last 30 years or so?

    [Reply]

    @vplaza, I don’t get the whole ECB, it’s an award for the best, not a runner up nor consolation prize.

    The kings winning the Cup should help. The west will have to be taken seriously, especially in a tight conference.

    And as for the Cup ratings being low, don’t start at 5pm PST when people are driving or working!
    Same for the awards. Same for the draft.
    You can split the time difference. Duh! Pimpslaps bettman!

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @Mars,

    I understand that these awards are for the best. But is it really true that in the past 30 years, only two goalies and five coaches from the west have been the best in their fields? Did the east really have the best talent and coaches during that time?

    Maybe there’s an argument that yes, absolutely, the east had the best. But I don’t buy that.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @vplaza,
    Well now, are you talking about East vs West as in the Conferences or the coasts, because as you so eloquently made out above, there are only 7 clubs that can even vaguely be termed “West Coast”, anyway?
    If you ask me this whole imaginary E vs W deal is of little pertinence – a red herring.

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @Duncanz,

    I’m talking about coast and not conference because there have been winners from Chicago and St. Louis, who I don’t characterize as west coast teams.

    And I don’t easily buy into the notion that GMs give all teams and all players the same attention. Realistically, GMs will see certain teams more, either in person or on TV. The other teams, they hear about or watch the highlights or read up on.

    To me, it’s a natural thing to favor what you’ve seen and experienced versus what you’ve just caught glimpses of or read about or talked to someone about.

    But, I suppose if we just say that “hey, most of the teams are east coast teams anyway, so naturally, most of the talent will be on the east”, then I maybe it is much ado about nothing.
