Henrik Lundqvist won the Vezina Trophy, and Jonathan Quick finished second in voting. [Quick was also named to the NHL All-Star second team.] Also, Shane Doan won the Mark Messier Leadership Award, for which Dustin Brown had been a finalist. Here’s the list of winners for the major trophies. Of the seven, only one went more than a stone’s throw west of the Mississippi River. Shocking! (not really at all.)
HART (MVP) — Evgeni Malkin (Penguins).
NORRIS (defenseman) — Erik Karlsson (Senators).
CALDER (rookie) — Gabriel Landeskog (Avalanche).
SELKE (defensive forward) — Patrice Bergeron (Bruins).
LADY BYNG (sportsmanship) — Brian Campbell (Panthers).
JACK ADAMS (coach) — Ken Hitchcock (Blues).
MASTERTON (dedication) — Max Pacioretty (Canadiens).
Click below for the “red carpet’’ interviews with Brown and Quick, as seen on NHL Network…

@pitty, East coast biased was very prevalent again this year. My opinion is that the western conference was more balanced and better than the east conf. this season. But the all NHL teams were announced and only one of the six first teamers were from the west. Wow!!! And only three on the second team, so four of the twelve best players in the NHL this year were from the east. Very sad. Not to mention only 2 of the 7 main awards were given to people from the west. So 6 of 19 NHL honors this year went to the west. 30%. Do the voters even notice that there are 15 teams that play in the western conf? I doubt it.

He came runner up to a great elite goaltender and a respected (acceptance speech slip-ups aside) player in the NHL.
I would say it just shows that most GMs did their homework and are on the same page.

What hurts Kings players in the awards process is that until now we have been viewed as the Clippers of the NHL. Most of the voting was done before the playoffs. Having won the Cup in so decisive a fashion and with Sutter, a member of the NHL Royal Family, as coach, we will now begin to be considered a legitimate member of the family, not as Ross Perot used to say, the crazy aunt in the basement..

@Itchy,
Not so much.
The Ducks were assembled to win the Cup, not really as a team of the future.
Therefore they petered out straight away.
Obviously, now they look like a flash in the pan.
The current Kings squad has been constructed more prudently.
Thus, by all rights, we will enjoy several successful seasons back-to-back, and deservedly, at last, garner long lasting respect from all round the League.
In hockey as in life, we earn our respect, we are not granted it.

Don’t like the Norris selection much. A little too offensive and no pun intended.
Quick would have had to set an all time record in all the stats to have bumped his wins up to near Hank’s. Not that it would have mattered. All even Devil’s fans in NJ at game FIVE could talk about was referencing the Rangers series. They don’t realize it but they contribute to the awe factor of NYR.
Really would have been nice for Quickie for him to of had a clean sweep. Next year, if we have a good regular season (110 points plus) we’ll get a lot of hardware fo sho.

I’ll just have to disagree with you on this. 120 to 63 is a pretty wide margin.
17 to 6 is a wide margin. Not sure how anyone could say it was close.
And I disagree that HL was that much better than Quick was.
HL had more wins and better save %. Quick had better GAA and more shutouts. And Quick had fewer goals to work with and pretty much willed his team to the playoffs.
So, if there isn’t a bias here, it would have been closer, IMHO.

I just think, generally speaking, the bias is often to be found within.
I just laugh at the conspiracy theories.
If there were any such nonsensical bias working, then the EC teams would band together and squeeze out the WC teams; eg withold their players when we wanted to trade, get together with the schedulers to make it impossible for us, give the awards to players that had no basis what-so-ever for receiving them, etc.
Heck, there’s no way we would have EVER won the Stanley Cup if they’d all been plotting against us like this!!

I don’t think the voters have really seen Quick play. I personally feel Quick was the better goalie and almost a 2:1 spread is ridiculous. But I also think winning a trophy because people voted you the best is silly. Just like judging a fight after 12 rounds without a KO… you wont get 100% of the people in agreement and happy. That means somebody’s going to be unhappy. But if you make it about stats then you don’t really have an awards show, do you?
Heck, nobody ever came to a job I worked and handed me a trophy. Nobody’s upset about that!
Duncanz Reply:

Remember @Itch’, the “voters” here were the GMs who, to a man, are far more clued in than any fan, casual or crazy, myself included.
It’s pretty nervey for said fans to pretend;
a) they are any fairer than 30 GMs
b) they are more well versed in the capabilities of all players in the NHL than the 30 GMs.
It’s an insupportable supposition.
Let them drink coke, I say!
vplaza Reply:
June 21st, 2012 at 12:21 am
@Duncanz,
Call me naive, but I don’t buy the odds that in 30 years, there really have only been that few winners of this award from the west. That’s it. I’m not saying the East is conspiring to deprive the West of Cups. Never said that.
The thing in question is the fact that the winners of these awards have overwhelmingly been from east coast teams. So, for the past 30 years, all the GMs felt that the best players just happen to be from the east? Just happens that way? Each GM is without bias and knows more about the players than anyone else and they believe nearly every year, the best player is…wait, from the east? No one knows more than these guys? How come many of the get fired?
I’m in no way losing sight of the fact that the Kings and Quick won the biggest prize of them all. How can anyone think that these awards are better than those or suggest that someone thinks that? Ludicrous.
But I also think that poo-pooing the awards as worthless compared to the Cup is shortsighted. The players earn these. Some can benefit eventually come contract time. Others are one shot wonders. I suppose if one has never won or earned an award of any kind, it doesn’t make sense why they have them in the first place.
I guess what boggles my mind is how can a Kings fan, after watching what JQ did this year, can say that the GMs got it right by giving it to HL in a landslide. Again, sure, he won the big one, but that’s beside the point and unrelated to the crux of the matter. During the regular season, JQ was every bit as valuable to his team’s success as HL was to his team’s success. In the eyes of many, not just Kings fans, the only reason they made the playoffs.
A lot of people, not just fans, believed this was going to be one of the closest awards to be handed out tonight. Their statistics were close. But the GM’s vote wasn’t even close.
Finally, is the GM really the person only able to judge who the best goalie is? If it was based purely on statistics, why have a vote? Just tabulate the numbers and declare a winner. Instead, they are making subjective decisions based on their knowledge, tendencies, and biases, not just because they’re more clued into each goalie in the league.
I’ll take my Diet Coke now.
Duncanz Reply:

@vplaz’,
• GMs get fired, sure, because the rules are that only 16 teams make playoffs and only one team wins the Cup Then they get replaced by other GMs, not by rabid, albeit reasonably informed fans.
• It is interesting to consider that the Sttanley Cup has only been won sporadically by WC teams.
• The fact remains that in any given year, 15 of 30 gentlemen voting for the Vezina winner are WC GMs.
• The fact that the “final 3 decision” was not close shows that the great mslajority of the GMs were on the same page.
• Not saying they got it right, or wrong. Simply that they are each entitled to their well informed opinion and vote.
• The GMs have been priveleged by the NHL to vote, bless them. Fan votes don’t work because of bias and multiple voting. Tell me you haven’t done that before.
• My best alternative would be that the Goaltender Coaches vote the Vezina winner. I can only wonder how many of the GMs actually consult their Goalie Coaches.
• I have never won an award or prize of any kind, but I enjoy these Awards and have nothing against the players/officials that win them. All voting is subjective. It’s the USA(/Canada).
• You are far from naive … a little simple, perhaps, in a quaint IE sort of way, but not naive.
• You are deserving of a Diet Coke, at the very least, for all my badgering of you and I shall make good on this offer should we find ourselves at a game together.
• You are an awesome blogger, in spite of your “Fontanacity” and don’t let someone who is unassailably even-minded and circumspect make you feel as if you can’t have your say around here!!

@Duncanz,
Yo dawg, I’m real talking you here…
1) Vezina is for best goalie during the regular season.
2) It’s a voted on trophy
I’m not saying there’s any conspiracy here… just saying I thought Quick was the best goalie this past regular season and I’d be surprised if something else didn’t sway people to vote for HL. It’s not a lifetime achievement award and I’m not sure if very many easterners saw anything from Quick other than ESPN game highlights the next morning where he gave up the only goal in the shoot out to loose 0-1. I also think it’s silly to give an award for “best” if you’re going to add “*without winning The Cup that year” after it.
Again, don’t think it’s a conspiracy just think it’s where the league is at. You can’t expect the east GMs and coaches to stay up till 1AM every single night watching Kings hockey, then wake up early the next day to take care of their own team. I fully believe if Quick played in another time zone this would have been a much closer vote, if not Quick winning.

@Itchy,
I think your confusing Eastern GMs with Eastern hockey fans.
Here’s some general GM food for thought:
Who tells the Eastern GMs who to trade for from the West if they’re only watching ETZ hockey properly?
Wouldn’t this then give Western GMs a decided advantage and be reflected in their teams’ SC success, which it apparently hasn’t?
They NEVER avail themselves of the comprehensive game footage they have at their disposal, courtesy of the video staff?
If GMs are so lazy and unprofessional and useless, why would (Eastern) clubs have them?
Itch, you’re pretending these guys are just sitting around, lighting up cigars and getting their info fed to them from their coaches (maybe) and from talking all day on the telephone.
It’s like the ride-along program opens your eyes to what goes on on a policeman’s beat.
The GMs need to institute a smoke-along for us fans that don’t really know what they do at all.
Also, with parity the way it is, it’s quite conceivable that the 10-15 best players in the league might not actually make the playoffs in any given season. Take Steve Stamkos, eg.
So winning the SC may not actually be a measure.
Whoever I judge to be the best GT in the NHL, I’m still not going to decry the GMs, nor doubt they have a much better bead on every single player comparison than I have.
And that’s the only real difference in how we see things.

@Duncanz,
I’ll admit I don’t know who does the scouting (ask the predators… they’re the only ones who’ve had Quick’s number this last year) and how they decide on who to go after for trades… baffles me how big of a gap there was though. Maybe they think the East is wide open so goalies have to be better to stop harder shots, or maybe they thought Quick had a better defense in front of him, so his stats came easier (padding save % because more of those shots are junk). Never thought there was a conspiracy, just baffled how the vote could be so far apart (still not sure if they’ve seen all of his work or just highlights/heard how well he plays).
Well, it’s just an awards show.
And I am thankful we got to see it live and in “technicolor”.
Pre-show live, post-game live.
I suppose I could be spoiled and not appreciate all these treats from my disgracefully “ECB” cable company.
I could also forget that the Kings just won the ONLY team trophy that really matters, and Quicker just won the ONLY player trophy that really matters, at the end of the day.
Imaabhorrent gine the outcry if any single hockey club, even the Stanley Cup Winners, (kind regards to @WAKingsFan’s wife) “hogged” all the awards every year.
Then the shoe would be on the other foot and we’d be kicking out wildly and foolishly with our remaining stocking hoof.
Jeez, give someone else a chance, for Gordie Howe’s sake!
If you got all the Chrissie presents you ever wanted on one occasion, what would be your your incentive to be good and polite the following year?!
So in rewrapping up then, do I ask forcall the nicest Chrissie prezies I can get every year? Yes.
Can I possibly get them all? No.
Am I perturbed about this? Kinda, but I’ll get over it.
Do I behave good and polite for the next 365/6 days? No, but I’m trying.
In actuality, I have so many black marks right now, I look like I went 20 Rounds with Westy & Cliffy!!

@Steve W,
• Acted in a surly and very ungracious manner in the handshake line.
• Stated to the press that Roszival was critically injured when he actually only sustained “some bruising”
In a legal hit that DB put on him late in the game and seconds before Penn’s eventual GWG, following up by proclaiming DB should be “banned for life” for said legal hit.
• Backed down quietly, without apologizing directly to The Kings, from said comments, after the NHL announced they were about to investigate the postgame actions of his and others’ who were extremely undignified in their comments to the press.
• Demonstrably showed no leadership (Hey there, Mark Messier!) in allowing himself and his teammates to totally melt down like they did.
Dave Tippett is another story.

@Duncanz, all that minus the banned for life thing, that was smith, smith is more of a dirt bag than doan imo, cuz he didnt even apologize, not to us or the league, and even stated that he doesnt regret anything he has said

@The Batman,
Ooh, you’re right. That comment was Smith’s!
Doan was the one who said that the NHL was conspiring against The Coyotes, rather humorous when you stop to think of the implications.
Sure Smith was pretty much unabashed by his own outrageous comments.
But Doan, as older and inarguably in a position of “leadership” (that word again MM!) as he is, shrank like a violet from his initial stand and, although tacitly contrite, said nothing to display any restoration of respect towards Dusin Brown or The Kings.
Poor.

Quick really got robbed on that one IMO. But at least he has a cup to his name and Henrik doesn’t yet. That said, Lundqvist did win an Olympics 6 years ago… It almost seems like the NHL gave it to Lundqvist outta mercy b/c he hadn’t won it when he was supposed to win it 4 years ago and after 4 tries they finally gave it to him. Quick still got robbed though…
[Reply]
Lot of talk this Kings team will win more cups, not so easy…
Pens won the cup as 3rd youngest team NHL, still trying to win another.
Like the Pens riddled with injuries the last three years, if the Kings stay healthy and Quicky keeps doing what he’s doing, I say hell yes we can with another in 13 baby!
Going on record, could change come Sept, but i say Pens vs Kings in the finals in 6 games again! 2-2 then kings win the next 2 to take the cup!
Just dreaming again…

We all know who the Vezina winner should have been…no surprise at all tho…
I did manage to get a chuckle over something Queen Henrik said during his curse speech and it wasn’t the F-bomb!
He was comparing himself to some of the other greats who won the award..Roy, Brodeur, etc…only problem is of all the guys he mentioned, he was the only one without a cup. For that matter he should have just said… “F… I’d give my left nut to be JQ right now”

@pr0cess, It seemed to me like they rent a place and probably give it up for summer for other millionaire to rent by the beach. Well JQ will be a real millionaire very soon. With $50M he can invest a couple so they don’t have to pack every year. These guys are big LA celebs now so I think they’re gonna want to hang around a bit more.

@Michael J., If DL has a verbal already with JQ, then I’d take a first, second, and third for Bernier. Flyers NEED him bad.
I laughed riding back on to NY on the NJ Transit back from game 5 when a nice Flyer Fan from Connecticut said that the Kings were the Flyers’ farm team. It’ the other way around I told him. Actually a nice man and his 15 year old son who plays hockey. They just took the train down to Newark in hopes the Kings would win so they could sneak in and see the Cup.

@Michael J., Varlamov got 1st and 2nd man.
More outrageous than Doughty being accused of sexual assault, was that Quick didn’t win this trophy OR even get nominated for the Hart. It shows that maybe they should stop voting on things and just go by the numbers.

I understand why the Swedes nicknamed Ludquist ‘King’ during the Olympic games, but in the NHL winning the Vezina after losing in the CF only makes him a ‘jester’ to the real King, Stanley Cup Champion and Conn Smythe winner, LA Kings Jonathan Quick.

All the Kings have to do to get a little love and respect is WIN THE CUP AGAIN. Sorry, that is the reality of it. And as others have mentioned, who cares. We as a team and a fan base have what we have always wanted – The CUP! We can now hold our heads higher, puff our chests out a little more (just to make sure everyone see the SC Champions patch on our jerseys), run crap back to everyone who has won a Cup before, run even more crap on those who haven’t, and basically, just have even more fun being a Kings fan. No one expects us to repeat next year, so we can once again assume the “underdog” role, skate onto their ice, smack them all over the ice, shut down their offense, make their goalies look naked when we score on them, and skate away with the Cup next season. Like Kopi said, “this is too much fun!!”

Compared to winning the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe (icing on the cake, really), I’ll bet that deep down inside, Jonathan Quick couldn’t give a flying buffalo turd about the Vezina.

@nykingfan, its not about respect. Its about playing at the Staples Center. AEG gives the league all of its available dates and the NHL works around that. If you want a more flexible schedule, then you would have to move to Winnepeg where nothing but hockey clubs ever come to town.
