Doughty’s attorney talks about investigation

Given that we’re near the close of the day, it’s likely that there will not be any resolution today to the Drew Doughty case. Doughty’s attorney, Craig Renetzky, said he expects a decision to be made within the next 48 hours. Doughty has been accused of sexual assault by a 25-year-old woman, but no charges have been filed. Renetzky graciously returned a phone call today and talked about some of the details of the case, starting with the timeline.

RENETZKY: “Mr. Doughty was contacted by the Hermosa Beach Police Department a number of months ago, regarding allegations. He immediately contacted my law offices, Craig Renetzky, and asked for some guidance. I met with him, and we began to cooperate with the Hermosa Beach Police Department in their investigation, because we believed that their investigation would lead to his being cleared of any charges in this case. So, this has been going on throughout the playoffs, but based on our information, we thought it would be best to cooperate. That’s why we anticipate that the case is going to be rejected. We don’t believe that there are going to be any charges. Drew Doughty has maintained his innocence throughout this.”

Question: It’s been said that the alleged incident took place on March 1. We’re now at June 20. Why so long? Would that be considered normal?

RENETZKY: “It’s just the Hermosa Beach Police Department being incredibly thorough. They’re interviewing any witnesses. They’re crossing every T and dotting every I. They’re doing an amazing job of making sure that their investigation is complete, that they’re not leaving any holes in it. That’s why there has been no rush to judgment in their case.”

Question: To the extent that you can, publicly, can you share Drew’s side of the story?

RENETZKY: “I’ve been in contact with Drew, on a regular basis, throughout the entire investigation. He’s always maintained his innocence. There was no sexual assault in this case. He wanted to get it put behind him, but we understood that the police department needed to be thorough. We have cooperated with them in that matter, and that’s why we so strongly believe that the D.A. will announce that there will be no charges filed.”

Question: According to one report, Doughty told police that it was a consensual incident. Is that something you can confirm?

RENETZKY: “I can’t comment on that, especially until after the investigation is concluded.”

Question: Is it fair to say that you’re expecting, from your end, a positive resolution?

RENETZKY: “We’ve been anxious for a resolution for a number of weeks now, but Hermosa is not going to rush it. They want to be thorough and that is, I think, in everybody’s best interests.”

Question: We now know that Drew has been dealing with this throughout the playoffs. From your conversations with him, how has he handled it?

RENETZKY: “He’s dealt with it very well. I think he’s had a great deal of faith in myself. He knows that I handled the case involving Mark Hardy, so he knew that my advice was good, and on point. I was watching the Stanley Cup playoffs with amazement, at how well he was doing. I don’t know if I could have done that. It obviously weighs on his mind, but I think that because, in the back of his mind, he knows that he’s innocent, he didn’t let it impact his play. If it did, I’d hate to see how amazing he would be without this allegation.”

Question: A lot of people have been curious about the timing, given the length of the investigation and the playoffs, that sort of thing…

RENETZKY: “I can tell you that this had nothing to do with the Stanley Cup playoffs. It had everything to do with a thorough investigation. Mr. Doughty contacted me well before this, and at no point did he ever request that the matter be delayed, to allow the playoffs to conclude.”

@Eric, keep in mind that Ms. Allred is not technically “hired” – that is if she “wins” the case (which could mean a form of payment), then she receives a percentage of the award.

@scooter, Fully understand the concept, my wife is a lawyer. The fact she is even involved just screams of payday. That Ms. Allred does nothing but jump on tabloids and create chaos.

    Peter90210 Reply:

@scooter, This is a criminal investigation, not a civil case. There is no financial award in a criminal case. Allred was hired to publicize the case in the hope that if a criminal case is filed, she can bring a civil action and then take a percentage of any award made in that case. But if the DA’s office doesn’t file, the chances of bringing a successful civil case is remote.

@Kingfish, My guess is she fabricated to much to make her look like too much of a victim. Cabbie & possibly video may exist that things looked consentual. The DA doesn’t throw out a case unless it is totally false 50/50 cases make it all the time, but if there is clear evidence showing flaws in the case or testamony thats when they get thrown out.
I remember seeing a documentary on Wayne Gretzky and a teammate said he was so concerned about his image he would not go out in public without someone he trusted with him to refute any false accuasation that might be made that would tarnish his reputation. I remember thinking thats a bit paranoid, but in this world he just may have been very wise.

What I’m saying is that this girl and there are many like her who have flat out lied in order to get money,
lack integrity which is (and not to a smart a about it ) but it’s:
    noun
    1. adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.

I am making a judgement about it and I don’t know for sure I have the facts,
But I’m basing it on the events as reported. Based on what is being reported, it does not at all sound like Drew forced anything with the accuser. Her story as reported does not make sense. As well her reported lack of cooperation with the police.

Now you come on here saying it’s just a formality that she’ll sue. How do you know, and why are you insinuating things that “Could, would, might” happen? Catch my drift?

Well, it has been reported that Gloria Allred has been retained by the complainant, right?
Since she is a civil litigation lawyer and far from a stupid person, you can see the dominos lining up in front of DD for his short-to-mid-term future, right?
This is not water divining here.

    Duncanz Reply:

    @CB14,
Also re the DL comment, the notion of him being lucky to still be in a job did come across kind of harsh, all events taken into account and my intention was to relay this to you in an objective, respectable manner.
I don’t know if you replied to mine.
Should I go back and check?

    CB14 Reply:

@Duncanz, My comment the other night was not to be harsh towards DL, just to remind the person who previously commented what kind of situation the Kings, and DL, were in. And I didn’t mean to insinuate that he was lucky to still have a job, my apoligies if it came off that way. I didn’t respond because I didn’t notice your comment until this afternoon and I figured you wouldn’t go back that far to look for a response.

Regarding the DD situation, there are many different scenarios regarding why GA has repped the alleged victim. I completely agree that GA is an attention whore, but that doesn’t mean all her clients are only out for the money. If GA repped the alleged victim this whole time I highly doubt it would take nearly 4 months for this case to become public.

    A few hypotheticals:

    1. The alleged victim is only out for the money: Wouldn’t her attorney contact DD’s attorney and ask for a settlement in exchange for her silence during the Kings cup run when the accusation becoming public would become a HUGE distraction? I know that’s what I would do if I had those motives and were in her position. And if they declined you make the allegations public.

    2. The alleged victim is only out for publicity: A similar answer to #1, the Cup run would be the PERFECT time to make these acusations public.

    Duncanz Reply:

    @CB14,
Well then, I really don’t see there is any conflict.
I think we are just keying in on different aspects of this case.
While I now see it is an issue that is very near to your heart, my angle was to make light of the fact that these “star vehicle cases” always play out in similar fashion.
    1) An incident.
    2) A prolonged investigation.
    3) Sudden publicity of revelations and possible charges.
    4) Gloria Allred joins the fray.

    RLane420 Reply:

@CB14, Ya she hired Allred because they don’t want money?

    [Reply]

    John Strachan Reply:

    @RLane420,

The first step in any rape allegation is to go to the hospital and get checked out. That immediately triggers a police investigation. You aren’t going to get very far in a civil suit unless you can prove that a sexual act occurred and the easiest way is to get the rape kit at the hospital.

I don’t see any inconsistency with starting with a criminal case to end up in a civil suit.

    2. King Henrik, added another blooper that should be put together with Brownie & Quick in a remix video. Nice!

    3. Shannahan bit got old after the 2nd one.

    4. Really? They can spend all this time doing horrible jokes that even the presenters don’t want to say, but they have to start rolling the credits during the Hart presentation because they ran out of time. Brutal.

    5. Yes, let’s have 3 different times to clap for the winners of the Masterton, NHL Foundation, Messier, etc, but not actually allow them to speak. Those rounds of applause weren’t awkward at all.

    6. How many different ways did people say Evgeni??

    Gary Reply:

@Mel Powell, Mel, I do not know what type of lawyer you are, being criminal, civil, small claims, etc. However,Do you remember the Kobe Bryant incident about 10 years ago in Denver,Colorado? A young woman was bragging of having sex with him. Then she charged him with sexual assualt. What kind of victim goes around bragging about being sexually assualted against their will? In Los Angeles, we have a radio station known as KFI,AM640. There is a lawyer host on there named Bill Handel. He was talking about a case in Colorado, where a woman accused some guy of sexualy assualting her. The only proof was her accusations. He said there was no physical evidence. The prosecuation pushed foward with the case. He said the jury bought the prosecutor’s story and now this guy sits in a Colorado prison. Another was a Documentary of Texas criminal justice and their death penalty. A man was accused of murdering a victom. He did the crime himself, he did not ordered the crime as a crime bosss. However, one major problem. There was no way he could have gotten to where the crime took place. The reason? He was in county jail when it happened. Even the jailer, or whatever their offical title are, testified in his defence. The prosecutor was addimant that the defendent was there at the sence of the crime and left with bloody hands.I believe that alot of prosecutors are hellbent to send as many as they can to prison being truly guilty or not. By the way, I am not a ACLU liberal either.

    JD Reply:

@HockeyNerd, The cab driver would be a witness, if doughty pulled her out of his can and into his house against her will, that’s after “wrangling ” her into his cab in front of a bar full of witnesses

Some of the comments on here are kind of disturbing. No one on here knows a thing about what did or did not happen. Those calling the woman a liar or money grubber have no basis in fact for saying that. Being a fan of the team is one thing – making groundless accusations about this woman is the exact same thing many of you are accusing HER of doing. Let’s let the legal process run its course before reaching conclusions that the professionals in Hermosa Beach have taken months to arrive at.

@JD, Not at all. And for the record I have never said something did or did not happen. All my comment was to say that Rick’s comment was 100% factual. If you can disagree with any aspect of his comment I would love to see it. What he says are facts, not speculation like most of the other people on here.

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@rick, +100000000 Better watch out now, everyone is going to post that “Your throwing Doughty under the bus” because you refuse to throw this woman under the bus!

    [Reply]

  47. When I first heard the news, without knowing any evidence, I must admit out of all the players on our team I wasn’t surprised it was Drew Doughty. I’m embarrassed as a Kings fan that this story is out there in the open, but that being said hopefully the legal system will sort it all out once evidence is gathered if there even is any.

I think regardless, Lombardi, Sutter, Robitaille, Nicholls, and even someone like Willie Mitchell need to pull Drew aside. I wasn’t thrilled with his outbursts in the Phoenix series and feel that he needs to mature a bit. Of all the Kings players that I’m afraid of our success getting into their heads, its Doughty who has also had conditioning issues in the past. He’s a phenomenal talent no doubt but needs to grow up a bit.

When a Politician makes a statement it USUALLY is a lie….
