Where will the Cup end up?

After tomorrow’s NHL Awards in Las Vegas and the draft this weekend in Pittsburgh, Kings players and staff can start putting the Stanley Cup on tour. Every player and coach and many staff members get to spend a day with the Cup. Most take it to their respective hometowns to spend time with family and friends. Some have public events. This summer, based on hometowns, the Cup could end up in four countries, including six Canadian provinces and five U.S. states. If you know the day, it should be fairly easy to find the Cup in Ayr, Ontario, or Meadowlake, Saskatchewan, each with a population under 5,000. Here are the hometowns of all the players…

CANADA
Jonathan Bernier (Laval, Quebec)
Jeff Carter and Drew Doughty (London, Ontario)
Kyle Clifford (Ayr, Ontario)
Colin Fraser (Surrey, B.C., but will take the cup to Alberta)
Simon Gagne (Ste. Foy, Quebec)
Dwight King (Meadowlake, Saskatchewan)
Willie Mitchell (Port McNeill, B.C.)
Jordan Nolan (St. Catharines, Ontario)
Dustin Penner (Winkler, Manitoba)
Mike Richards (Kenora, Ontario)
Brad Richardson (Belleville, Ontario)
Jarret Stoll (Melville, Saskatchewan)
Kevin Westgarth (Amherstburg, Ontario)
Justin Williams (Cobourg, Ontario)

UNITED STATES
Dustin Brown (Ithaca, N.Y.)
Davis Drewiske (Hudson, Wisc.)
Matt Greene (Grand Ledge, Mich.)
Trevor Lewis (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Alec Martinez (Rochester Hills, Mich.)
Scott Parse (Kalamazoo, Mich.)
Rob Scuderi (Syosset, N.Y.)
Jonathan Quick (Milford, Conn.)

EUROPE
Anze Kopitar (Jesenice, Slovenia)
Andrei Loktionov (Voskresensk, Russia)
Slava Voynov (Chelyabinsk, Russia)

As a bonus, here’s where Dean Lombardi intends to spend part of his day with the Cup. Bonus points if you can name it…

Brand new Community Centre with bowl seatiing, sitting about 1.500 around the NHL size ice surface, with hanging clock at centre ice and a walking track and community rooms throughout.

Right now signs around town congratulate Kyle Clifford on his accomplishments with his team and all the Kings management.

Just to see the some 800+ youth athletes in Ayr admire the cup in Kyle’s presence will be the best experience of all. No punching allowed, as everyone in town know of each other and their children and cousins. Awesome feel to live in a such a tight knit community.

    [Reply]

    Robert R Reply:

@Michael J., A quarter of a million were the ones who could show up, so let’s add in those who could not get away from work or aren’t well enough to leave home, plus those of us who currently reside around the US (and the world, for that matter).

    Naturallawyer Reply:

@Blurker, I’ve grown to accept that people won’t let that myth go. You can direct people here to prove the point: http://espn.go.com/nhl/attendance

Note, the Kings are 15th in home attendance, but they are lowest in the league in road attendance. This indicates that Kings fans don’t travel well like other teams’ fans do. It also means there aren’t a lot of transplant Kings fans in other cities, which makes sense since people move from other cities to LA, not vice versa. :-)

    [Reply]

    dkrasne Reply:

@Naturallawyer, another possible interpretation – Kings are in the Pacific division, which means when Kings are on road they (at least more often than anyone else) are playing to empty houses in Phoenix and Dallas. Other Pacific division teams at least get to play in LA which usually sells out.

The Kings @ Devils SCF games were actually pretty well attended by Kings fans (especially games 1 & 5…less so game 2 but that was cause of 2 off days between games 1 & 2). Didn’t see many Devils fans at all in Game 6 in LA.

In general, LA is just further away from most teams than everyone else. Thats exactly why Kings had worst travel schedule this year (+ Europe to boot). Lord knows where the upteen million Red Wing fans come from…only 2 million or so have deserted Motown in the last 20 years

    [Reply]

    Naturallawyer Reply:

@dkrasne, Yeah, I flew to NJ for game 5, there were tons of Kings fans. Some of us decades-long fans didn’t want the Kings to lift the Cup without us there… But you have a great point about playing in empty buildings so often (looking at the home attendance at that espn site, a majority of the Pacific competition is brutal).

    PW Reply:

@dkrasne, Who wants to see their team play the Kings and lose on their home ice? No wonder why the attendance is low.

    Duncanz Reply:

    @Naturallawyer,
Every single one of the clubs above The Kings in this table has an arena with a greater capacity, apparently.
Presuming they all continued to sell out, The Kings spot at no.15 wouldn’t change.
As for the faltering road attendances, I would put this down, more than any other factor, to the team’s hard earned reputation for plaing boring, stodgy hockey, resulting in games with very few goals for either team.
I believe recent events may bring about a sliver of a change in people’s perceptions next season, just possibly, maybe ….

    [Reply]

    LA_1968 Reply:

@Naturallawyer, I disagree that the reason is we don’t travel well. I can testify that we don’t travel well but that’s not the reason the attendance is low. Transplants can be a factor but it’s not the key. We just didn’t have the star power to draw the home team fans in, nor did we have any rivalries (in the other cities’ fans minds). The media could be partly blamed for our star power but our play and history was the biggest factor. We got a huge boost in this department with the Cup so we’ll see next year.

    @LA_1968,
You couldn’t've said that better, myself! :(

    KingMe20 Reply:

    @Naturallawyer,

I guarantee there will be more fans on the road this year.

    [Reply]

    Naturallawyer Reply:

@KingMe20, I fully expect that. As a season ticket holder, every year I look forward to playing the prior year’s cup winner to see how we stack up. For the Kings, that means every game is going to be a “big game” for the other team. From a competition standpoint, it will get a lot tougher than it was in this regular season.

I bet even Phoenix fans will show up to see the new rivalry take hold. They were mad at the end of game 5.

@RobBordson, I’m getting so many high fives and “Go Kings!” when I wear my gear around San Diego. It’s awesome, and a bit surprising considering I’ve actually come to blows over it down here in the past just because they are from L.A. It’s not like we have a hockey team down here and I still sport my share of Gulls gear.

@RobBordson, Had a Wings fan and a few Stars fans here in San Antonio Texas tell me what a great sight it was to see the Kings play so well in the playoffs. Every day through the cup run I wore Kings gear in some capacity. Even as the Spurs went down, the praise went up for the Kings. Might even have converted a few fans along the way. GKG!!!

Since the Kings displayed such team unity during their steamroll through the playoffs, they should do something that (I guessing) no other teams has done with the Stanley Cup in the previous summers. A player or staff member who has the cup should travel with the player or staff member who is scheduled to have it next. That way it would be like passing a baton, but even better!

Is the Cup actually going to be in Pittsburgh for the Draft?

I heard the G20 Summit in Los Cabos!
Can any “other” reputable journalist or individual verify this potentially scurrilous breaking news item?

So, will Westgarth, Parse, and Drewiske get their names on the cup? I thought they had to play 41 games or at least one playoff game?

When will Quick get his Day? Will any of the date be posted when the players get their day?

I figure it will go Iticha, NY (Brown) to Hamden, CT (Quick) to Boston Logan Airport… with a quick stop over at Holyoke/wherever he lives when not in LA, MA (Lombardi).
