Construction of a championship team

Upon his hiring as Kings general manager in 2006, Dean Lombardi set out to build a championship team. Six years later, he accomplished the goal. Along the way, many players passed through Los Angeles, with some (Michal Handzus, Wayne Simmonds, Sean O’Donnell) destined to be better-remembered than others (Brian Willsie, Dan Cloutier, Ladislav Nagy). How was this season’s Stanley Cup championship team created? A total of 23 players dressed for at least one game in the playoff run. Lombardi inherited three key pieces — Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Jonathan Quick — from former GM Dave Taylor.
