Here are a couple things you’re probably going to want to bookmark/follow for a while. As you probably know, the Stanley Cup is constantly on the move. It was mentioned on TV the other day that it makes public appearances approximately 300 days a year. This summer, it’s the Kings’ turn to show it off. All players and coaches — as well as many staff members — get a day with the Cup, to do whatever they would like with it. The Hockey Hall of Fame, the official home of the Cup, will be tracking its travels through an online journal this summer, and Phil Pritchard, the official “keeper of the Cup,’’ the man charged with transporting it and keeping it safe, has been on Twitter giving updates. The links to both are below. At last report, the Cup is in Las Vegas with a group of Kings players and family members. Good luck with that, Phil…

I hope Quick spends his day with the cup back home in CT with his family and the organization he got his start with, Avon Old Farms. He is already a local legend and the kids are dying for a chance to see him and the cup.

So after starting the season in Berlin (couldn’t convince the gf to see them in Stockholm for a day) and painfully flying back and forth for all 6 games, this has been the most emotionally vexing, mentally punishing, costly, and utterly enjoyable ride for one of the things I’m most passionate about in my life. Random thoughts…and yes i’ve been writing this for a few days:
- Which team would people prefer the Kings to have at home to start the season for our Banner Day? The Ducks (obvious rival), the Sharks (probably more hated rival), the Canucks (rub it in the face of the President Trophy winners?), the Coyotes (just because it would be funny), the Flyers, or someone else?
- With this Cup win immortalizing this generation of Kings, we may very well be watching the last Kings players to ever wear the numbers #23, 11, & 8. Staples is going to have to start finding some more space to hang banners
- During the finals, Staples was muuuuch colder than The Rock. After the first game in Jersey people complained about the ice, but the topic sorta went away, it would be interesting to know how players felt about the surfaces in both arenas
- The CBC broadcast is light years better than the NBC. Sadly iTunes only has the NBC version available. I think the reason CBC does better is because their knowledge of hockey stems from knowing the players first, while NBC tries to cover 3-4 start and then teams. By knowing the players the CBC has generally better interviews (because they know the background stories for people, how they play, etc). Also it was awesome how the CBC broadcast team (Jim Hughson) basically didn’t talk for the 2+ minutes of the game as they let the crowd to all the talking
- It’s funny how different the pregame atmosphere was for Game 4 vs 6. LA Lives was bonkers 3hrs in advance for Game 4…whereas it was much tamer and less crowded for Game 6. My guess is it’s because fans were more nervous
- While trying to log onto lakings.com to watch the parade there’s something ironically funny about the advertising banner at the top of page for Viagra. Advertising for a team which seemed impotent at times and then found a way to inject scoring mid-season to become champs, seems rather funny
- I thought I would cry at the final horn, but I didn’t. I only started to tear up when I heard Nick Nickson’s call later on. I think for the rally they will be able to have Bob hoist the cup at center ice…and then I’m really gonna tear (Bob seemed to indicate that Brownie was looking for him on the ice but Bob was already doing the postgame show) when I hear the DVD with Bob’s call
- Definitely one of the happiest moments of my personal life especially since I was there with my dad.
- It’s one thing to see the Lakers win year after year (never seen a clinching game in person for them) and people get happy and sorta expect a championship, but for the Kings it’s different because it was our first. And nothing can be like the first when it had such a long delay. Really special
- That Ducks fan who has that jersey saying “Stanley Cups: Duck 1, Kings 0” needs to get some new clothes this offseason.
- For all those people who didn’t like our “new” homeplate logo I think you better get used to it, this win pretty much means that it ain’t going anywhere for a long time.
- The ethnic/racial diversity of Kings fans is amazing compared to crowds at other arenas.
- Bernier was sorta like a Black Ace during the playoffs. At some point in the next 1-3 years Bernier will probably be moved because he will have earned a shot to be a starting goalie, and I wonder how much the run of watching Quick up close will help him make runs of his own in his career. It would be interesting if their paths cross in the future with some big at stake
- In Ken Dryden’s “The Game” he spoke of the fact that he really became an excellent goalie because he was pushed continually by a very good back-up. I wonder how much of Quick’s development has been helped by Bernier’s presence. People talk about Quick being a fighter, perhaps constantly being on your toes has made him stronger and stronger
- 3 power play goals on a major or not, the powerplay must be improved next season (and maybe we figured things out finally based on the last 2-3 games, where even when we didn’t score we looked pretty solid). the Kings improvement in the PP strikes me as the biggest reason they will improve next season. Blowing open close games will life easier for everyone. Including my blood pressure.
- It seemed like the Devils open the first 2 periods of game 1 and 2 as if they were still in a post we-beat-the-Rangers haze
- The problem with the Kings generally not complaining about calls in the media like Phoenix & NJ is that the perception builds up that we’ve gotten all the breaks and that only the other team has been slandered
- Talking with Bob Miller who has was just hanging out in the hallway at NJ be himself before Game 1 was the highlight of my Kings fandom
- Doughty grew up with Kings gear in his bedroom because of the Gretzky-era Kings. I wonder what kids in Canada will grow up with Kings gear because of this era and will mention that when they get drafted in 2022
- I’m not going to get tired of reading stories and seeing pics of the players with the Cup this summer. This is going to be the best summer ever, and no lockout threat is going to ruin it for me

@Shakes, Excellent post, great potpourri. I also think Bernier will be moved. People here say ‘you have to keep him, you always want two good goalies’ and I dont argue with that, I just think your #2 guy should be a guy suited to that role, ie, a vet who couldnt handle 65 games a year at this point in his career. I think the organization, as much as they would like to keep him, owes it to Bernier to give him a crack at being a #1. He’s never spoken out (at least as far as I know) about being unhappy, but you have to think he is. Give him a deserved shot somewhere, and maybe start stocking draft picks for young studs 3-4 years down the road.
And yeah, I was amazed how the NJ fans thought the Kings got all the calls, so much so to the extent some even claimed the league was fixing the series so LA would win. People seeing with their hearts and not their eyes. The officiating wasnt all that good but I never found it much one-sided, except the calls for running opposing goalies with Quick never getting even one.

I concur with so many of your thoughts. Thanks for sharing. The Kings winning The Cup would have been special no matter what, but the way they did it makes it especially special. I remember how bummed I was that we missed the Pacific Division with those two season ending losses to the Sharks. And how worried I was that we were going to be one and done again compliments of the Canucks. And how worried I was that after a record setting pace to get into the SCF, that we might have an equally record setting meltdown to the Devils. And finally feeling confident that the long wait was over after our PP found itself with a vengeance during a five minute stretch in the First Period of Game 6. What a marvelous ride. LET’S DO IT AGAIN!!!

@Shakes, Great post. I have a lot of the same thoughts.
-I don’t really care who we play when we raise the banner, but it would be pretty funny if it were the Yotes. They might blow a gasket all over again.
-I agree with you that if we had complained about calls more, maybe it wouldn’t seem like we got all the breaks. But I appreciate the class of Sutter and the Kings in general. I never liked it when Lombardi went off the rails about officiating and Toronto, even if he had some valid points. Complaining and blaming others is the sure sign of a loser.
-I definitely think Quick is the goalie he is today because of his competition with Bernier. These two guys will be better off in their careers because of each other.

@Shakes,
I think the complaining about refs was a good indicator where the players’ heads were. Rather than look to place blame they were looking to play better and anybody who thinks The Kings got anything better than 50/50 of the questionable calls is just venting for their team. It’s not unheard of to kill a 5 min major.
During every TV time out of game 6 there was a guy walking around the ice with an infrared thermometer… I’d never seen that before at a Kings game. I guess they were making sure the ice stayed good?
At this point, looking to next season, I’m just hoping PHX has plenty of time to cool off. They got spanked in the conference finals and weren’t happy about it. Don’t want to see them running our players during the regular season, ending careers and getting a 3 game suspension that really doesn’t mean anything. They didn’t handle it well at the moment… just hoping they’ve cooled down.

@Shakes,
- Which team (Definitely the Coyotes. I want Doan and Smith to feel that moment.)
- Numbers/Space (I think #32 before those 3 and that will make 2 number thirtytwo’s in the rafters. Burn the Sparks banners.)
- Louder/Ice (Good to ‘hear’ so to speak. I was surprised such a storied franchise has such crappy ice. I would imagine there would be better technology nowadays.)
- The CBC (Yes, far better agreed. They put up full-game replays on their site but game 6 isn’t available yet)
- Game 6 at Staples (My only regret is not throwing down the cash to go, but I really could not justify it. Also, I should have gone with variable and Duncanz after TSC up to LA Live.)
- Parades and Viagra (Like peas and carrots)
- I thought I would cry (There’s no crying in hockey or baseball. I had a few ‘moments’ though on Tuesday afternoon. I’ll call it ‘high emotional humidity’)
- Dad (The main reason I went to TSC was so I could watch it with him as I didn’t want to drag him down to LA Live being 82 and all)
- The first (Yep. Can never, ever be duplicated or matched. A one of a kind moment.)
- Ducks fans (“Yeah but we got it first” …oh yeah? Well we go it NOW! Quit living in the past.)
- Homeplate (Painful but true. And again, this ain’t baseball.)
- Diversity (LA is easily the most diverse place to win the Cup. Penner speaking Spanish was classic. Way to up his profile!)
- Bernier (I’ve been impressed with his attitude this whole playoffs. Very supportive despite tough circumstances for him individually. He’ll be gone sooner rather than later and the one thing that sucks is he will be more motivated than ever to achieve his own legacy, which could come at our expense as you hinted at.)
- Dryden/Backup (I suspect some of this may be true, but I have a sneeking suspicion Jon Quick is one of those guys that is ultra self-motivated.)
- Powerplay (we need a Cup winning assistant coach to help out there. Kompon won’t cut it… oh wait… never mind)
- Rangers Haze (I think their lack of team Cup experience was a big factor in those two games.)
- Bad calls/perception (This always seems to happen. People cry about bad calls for years and years. My perception will always be how much the Coyotes are big babies.)
- Talking with Bob Miller (And mine was talking to Dean Lombardi for 10 mins at TSC alone in the stands. I told him we’d win the Cup in 6 at home and he said I was crazy. I kid, I kid.)
- Doughty/Future Kings fans (There are going to be so many more Kings fans around the world now. Just like any championiship team, especially one as young and cool as these Kings, they have just created a huge new generation of young fans. LOVE IT!)
- Lockout Summer fun (I wonder if this year will be looked back on as the ‘old’ pre-lockout NHL again? And hear people say ‘the Kings would never have one in the new NHL’ blah, blah. Regardless of what happens, I hope the Kings have a solid next season…whenever it is)

@Shakes,
Normally, I scroll right down past long posts like these, because I already spend too much time inhaling Kings information. But always enjoying your posts, I chose to read this one. (And I’m glad I did — it’s great!)
I could respond to a lot of those thoughts, but I will pick two that I really relate to.
I have all 6 NBC-broadcasted SCF games recorded and saved on my DVR. But I happened to be home the day after we won, and when I turned on my TV which is always stuck on the NHL Network, they were replaying the game with the CBC broadcast. After about 2 minutes of watching, I realized it was so much better, and hit record and recorded the whole game, and I deleted the NBC broadcast. I’ve loved Jim Hughson since the late ’90′s when he was on the EA Sports video games, and I’ve always enjoyed listening to his calls on Center Ice. (Of course, when Bob and Jim’s is released, that will trump them all)
The other one I wanted to comment on was the team we host for Banner night. I hope it’s the Sharks. I just get a kick out of the fact that they have been built to win and expecting to win for the past 7 or 8 years, and they just can’t do it. The way their fans have always treated our fans, and feeling like their s&*# don’t stink, just because they always go deeper in the playoffs than we do, just makes me laugh that we sneak into the 8th seed (thanks to the Sharks beating us twice to end the year – making them feel even more like they own us) and grab us a Cup! I think the Sharks, and the Sharks fans are more jealous that we won the Cup than any other team and fanbase, because they can’t seem to win one. They aren’t respectful fans, and I would love to rub it in their faces — Because we now have the last laugh.

I have no idea if she made it in or not but I then stood in the general admission line for about 35 mins with variable and sat in the 200′s. Wish I made it up to the suite to say hey to everyone but I’m very glad all you enjoyed it!

Also, a footnote here as well. A couple of seasons ago when the Kings clinched a playoff birth on the Ducks home ice, Ahlers and Hayward in between periods were not wearing their Stanley Cup rings. Then, on the post game wrap up show after the Kings won and they came back from commercial, They were wearing their rings ! It was definately a “Screw You” to the Kings and their fans.

@Stuart, You know… I know Richards and Carter were traded, and that brings the Flyers toward the headlines when the Kings win the Cup. However, it was a story the whole time after the Flyers were eliminated and still is. Many teams in the last several years have lost in the Final like Philly. What makes the Flyers so special. If we lost we would have dropped to nobody like a rock. Anyway, it doesn’t matter much. My point really is that we need to put some runs together on a regular basis to get respect. That’s the cruel truth. I think Quick blew his chance to have a spot with Peggie but I will shut up about all this stuff if any King gets a roll like Kane or Thomas.

Been nice to win the cup maybe a decade ago or maybe even 30 years ago. But it’s really sweet now to win with the advances of the internet, social media, and digital advances. Better exposure.
There’s a saying “peeking too soon.” Sorry Mtl Canadiens!! LOL

Note to Kings Media Division – durng the team photo on ice with the Cup right after it was presented, the Kings are all holding up 1 finger. Please ensure that when they hoist the Cup and pose with it next year, they are holding up 2 fingers. That is all.

Las Vegas? Then maybe they should take a leisurely 4-hour drive with it to one of the most beautiful national parks in the country (Bryce) for a photo op with one of the rangers there . . .

@KDinUT, The cup is going to Utah with Lewis. He even said so.

“Good luck with that, Phil”.
Considering his problems with Peggy and the credit card, he’ll need good luck.
I assume that the Kings flew to Vegas and Phil took the bus.

The Kings Salute the men and Women that served our Country frequently! It would be kind of cool if before they went their separate ways or after to go down to the USS Iowa now docked in the Harbor to take a Picture or two on the Old Lady.

I am still reeling in amazement. And it dawned on me earlier today reading here.
The draft and awards are next week. I am used to our run ending earlier and feeling like Kings news was going to be coming in slow. Not this year, its already upon us. WOW.
I am dying to get my pic with the cup. I dont need to touch it. Just a pic next to it.
