Staples Center rally photos

After the parade, the Kings and 18,000-plus friends went inside Staples Center for a rally in which the team was introduced and several players, coaches and front-office members spoke. Jonathan Quick made the folks at Fox Sports West choke a bit with his creative way of praising his teammates, Darryl Sutter brought down the house with some fist-pumping and Dustin Brown gave a heartfelt tribute to Bob Miller, who did an outstanding job as the event emcee. I went up and sat in Bob and Jim’s booth and got some pictures of the scene…

@Jack, Quick can say whatever he wants, but my kids and I lost a lot of respect for him since he doesn’t seem to know what the appropriate, professional response is in a situation like that. He comes off like a 13-year-old who got a mic put in his hands for the first time in front of the school auditorium without any teachers present.

    Jeff Reply:

@Jack, Like kids never hear it. It’s not what they hear it’s what you teach them to say If that ruined it for your family that really sucks because there was so many positives. As far as I’m concerned Quick has a couple week pass to do whatever he wants.

    [Reply]

    Jack Reply:

@Jeff, There’s a time and place for it, and that was neither. There’s something called respect – respect for the game, respect for the fans, and respect for the cup. There’s also something called gratitude – gratitude for the game, gratitude for the fans, and gratitude for the cup. I think the organization could have been represented much better in both regards without Quick’s [slurred] words.

    [Reply]

    Jeff Reply:

@Jack, Wow! To say he has no respect or gratitude is way far fetched. That is one humble kid and I’m sure he will regret it in the morning, next week, or whenever he decides to check back in. It’s happened to most everyone at one time or another I’m sure.

    KingsATX Reply:

@Jack, Here’s some “gratitude”. The organization wouldn’t be represented here at all without JQ. He had too much to drink, but he didn’t “ruin” anything. Perhaps we should also ban alcohol from these celebrations, the tiny children may see/hear things that may offend a few parents. I’m now actually disappointed in myself for wasting my time talking about it. I have a feeling JQ will do just fine without your approval Just a hunch.

    loskingpride Reply:

Though it wasn’t very kid friendly, real, unedited language happens everyday in life. You may not like it, but you’ll have to deal with just the same.

It was in fact “Quick’s time”, and he will obviously say whatever he wants (regardless of what you or anyone else would prefer). I do think he’ll regret it in the morning.

@Jack, i for one dont think he’ll regret it at all. and i think its ridiculous that you say that he doesn’t have respect or gratitude, it makes me think that you haven’t watched the kid through these passed couple of years. Do you honestly think the team, and every other team for that matter, just sits and has tea time with the thing? heck no, the whole team is on top of the world right now, and they are enjoying it as much as they can because they have worked hard for it, and no one has worked as hard as quick has.im sorry that you felt that this ruined the whole celebration for you and your family but they are living the dream and lapses happen, and i dont believe it needs to be as big as a deal as its being made out to be

@Jack, I’m not going to reinforce your point in the least. You obviously don’t go to very many hockey games or sit anywhere near the bench. Perhaps another type of entertainment is in order for you where the performers are somehow obligated to live up to your standards. I thought what Quick said was from his heart and said to his teammates and we got to listen. I’m glad they had fun, they deserved it, and I’m glad he said he loves his team. It was a pure and honest moment void of the contrived cliches we hear all year. It’s almost like we got to be in the room for just a second.
I am sorry that you were offended though. I wish everyone there could have been as happy as the Kings, and Quick, have made me.

As you know, My language is pretty flowery at times, yet I was a little uncomfortable for JQ. But, when you’re in your 20′s, drunk or at least severely hung over, and are the newly crowned NHL BAD ASS. I think the networks were a little short sighted.

@Jack, you have a justifiable expectation to safe viewing, However, shame on you for having expectations. The world is not perfect and if JQ’s F’ Bombs ruined your family’s day, I have to ask you what you thought about your family watching Scuderi’s head getting split open? If his words offended you, why do you support such a violent sport’s most recent champion? Or do you?

Lighten up Brother. Its hockey, which is legalized criminal activity in a confined area, with bad language.

    TiredOfIt Reply:

@Jack, Sir, if you feel offended every time you hear a bad word then you should probably stay home. This is LA Kings Hockey and it’s played by adult human men, not Saints. If you’ve never heard bad language at a game before you must have had your headphones on. I’m not saying JQ’s comments weren’t ill-timed, but to say he ruined the event is a bit much. We are so proud of what he has done for this team he can, IMHO, say anything he wants. He just spent the most grueling 2 months a human could endure I’m sure. He has maintained his composure throughout the entire run. He let his hair down…give him a break.

    McSorleyfan Reply:

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Jack, This topic has been beaten to death and I should probably go to sleep already. Having said that, I have to agree with the majority. Your children are YOUR responsibility, not Quick’s. You cannot demand that the world change just to suit YOU. The angriest I have ever been in my life was when I was walking on
a sidewalk, deep in thought, and suddenly a bicycle with a man carrying a little child screamed “EXCUSE ME!”. I pointed to the road which had a VERY CLEAR bicycle route and said “that’s your lane there”. The man screamed in response “I HAVE A KID!”. Never in my life have I wanted to strangle someone so bad. My point is that you should not have been surprised at something like this and have planned accordingly. Just as that man should not have taken the kid on that bicycle if he could not handle it you should not have taken your children if this was going to surprise and shock you. Quick was uncomfortable speaking to the public and an unfortunate incident happened because of it. If that ruined your day, it’s not on him.

My best moment was Brownie calling out his only bad moment of the playoffs — not having Bob call the playoffs.. and finals. Bob was obviously touched, and that was really cool right there. I also thought someone should have tapped TM on the back.. Taylor got his shout out for smart early drafting .. TM got us from A to W.. and DS from X to Z. This team had no real problems scoring goals until we lost SG.. DL filled that spot and away we went.. defense and GT was always playoff ready.. so TM deserves some real credit for the last few years of development (who knows how far we go w/Kopi last year).

So many inspiring posts here and such a great week, I feel like writing more about my beginning with these guys… I’m going big.

I started going to King games when I was about 8, in 1974 and as I mention above, the Kings wore yellow pants. As many of you remember, it was an ugly game then, and tough in L.A. There was no parity in the league and it was really common to lose 8-0 or 10-4. And once in a while, they would win that way too. It was also ugly in that there could be easily be 100 minutes in penalties; there was usually blood, even in the stands where the puck would fly over the low glass with no nets. I’d say 5-10 fights a night and bench clearing brawls every 3-4 games. We all remember what Clarke did to Dionne one night and 5 minute match penalties for spearing and butting were common. We loved it because it was all we knew. On Saturday nights, sold-out attendance was always 16,005. And it was just as loud in there as it gets today. During the week though, maybe 8-10,000 came. My Dad had season seats that he inherited through a player (Neil Komadoski – long story) and of course, he bought us the seats in the last row of the colonnade and we’d sneak down to the 5th row after the first whistle.

Kings were never great, but Goring and Dionne and Rogie and many others were exciting; along came Taylor and Simmer and Foxy and things got better as did their pants – Forum Blue now. None of this is really in order but I was so proud of the Triple Crown Line, and I remember one year our boys having like 103 points and losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Rangers (in those days, all teams were seeded 1-16 I think and we were like 2 and the Rangers were like 14 – such a bummer). Of course, we’ll always have the Miracle on Manchester. It took us 90 minutes to get out of the Forum parking lot and everybody blew their horns the whole time. Still the greatest single sporting event I’ve ever attended (obviously, not the most special or important). I remember Arnie at the Whistle Stop, give him an extra buck and he’ll load on the Roast Beef. The pumpernickel was super fun for a little kid who also played Hockey at Pickwick. Great was the change that came with the draft of Jimmy Carson and Luc and other great young players like Doug Smith and Steve Bozek. Of course, times were rough for the Kings.. they traded away most of their good players and their draft picks in those days for has-beens and flashy seat-fillers.. You had to have a ton of goons too.. What tough guys we had over the years with Schultz and Hutchison and Holt and Williams – if you are younger than me, YouTube those guys – amazing.. two fights in one stoppage some times..

By the time Wayne came, I was old enough to be cynical and scowling at his demand that we wear Raider colors. But it passed because with him came some winning and that was mostly new .. we still stayed on track with acquiring older players to play with Wayne and we almost pulled it off.. no sense in blaming Marty because he played great all playoffs long.. Watch Game 6 against Toronto to prove that..

I won’t ramble about the nineties and naughties because it’s just not that long ago.. and we were all around by the Frenzy… which is still such an incredible memory..

Season after season we have waited and I really was pretty confident that this would happen next year, or the year after that. To have it be a surprise and not an expectation was an awesome experience and a very very special thing, that I will never forget.. the next stage I guess is expecting success, and high expectations every year.. I like that too.

    Gary Reply:

@Yellow Pants, McNall wanted to change them, Luc suggested the colors of his old junior team, the Quebec Olympique.(who do you think was behind the change again?) It just happened to be the same off-season they traded for Gretzky. At the Gretzky media conference, they asked him about the new uniforms, and he said something like “it is better than the purple and yellow”.

BTW, my first game was when I was 4, the first game ever at the forum, Dec. 30, 1967. It’s been a long wait, but, oh so sweet!!!

@HockeyNerd, Yeah I don’t get that. If you take your kids to sports you know the fans and the players are talking mad s- pretty much the whole game.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@skooma, I thought of something else too. Quick may be one of those athletes that can cooly step in front of a 100Mph slapshot, but when he has to give a speech in front of 18,000 people he’s terrified. That’s something we can all understand. Besides, the context was that he was trying to deflect the praise OFF HIMSELF AND ONTO HOS TEAMMATES. I agree with the above, if you’re really shocked and upset about what he said them the anger should be directed at the organizers and / or the media. They should have been more prepared because they KNOW that this language comes out of the mouth of athletes ALL THE TIME.

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Anthony, Finally got a chance to hear it. I’m sure he didn’t mean any harm but yeah it probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do, and his judgement was probably more like he plays the puck outside the crease than how he stops pucks. I’m a little disappointed because its not the classiest thing he could have said. However LOTS of things other athletes have done have been far, far worse.

  28. Steve says:

It’s okay to say Quick gaffed without hating the guy. Recognizing it was a lame move doesn’t change all he accomplished this year. He is still the heart and soul of this team no matter how many F-bombs he says. He’s Jonathan Quick, not Jonathan Witty. At any rate, hix speech was better than Doughty’s. Although I don’t know when we allegedly started beating Detroit (they best us the last game we played).

From now on, Penner should just speak for the team. He’s informative, funny, and uses less F-bombs.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Steve, I think we’re all making more of it than there is, myself included. To me, and in fairness I wasn’t there, it appeared that he had a little too much to drink, did not want to speak but felt obligated too, was trying to deflect praise off himself, and blew it. I can only say if I were a parent I’d be a LOT more worried about what some other athletes do in the guise of being role models than a few f-words. For anyone who wants to use this day as an example to a child of what NOT to do I think you’d be better served by explaining that the organizers and media had a responsibility that THEY blew. Even better still, explain to your children that some greedy CLASSLESS people were SELLING tickets and making money off a service THEY DID NOT PROVIDE.

Well, just a final word on ‘The Great Jon Quick Debate of 2012′,that someone will probably immediately top..

    • JQ is 26 years and 115 days old.
    • JQ purportedly had imbibed some sophisticated adult beverages.
    • This was not a hockey game, but a public speaking engagement.
    • JQ had better hope AEG is not overly religious come July 1st.
    • Some people (who shall remain shameless) laughed at this more than anything funny anyone else said.
    • No one was scarred for life in the dropping of these ‘f’ bombs.
    • Some people were personally offended and had a right to be.
    • Some people were annoyed for their children’s innocence and had a right to be.
    • Any public media that allowed these comments to pervade the airwaves is probably older than 26 years and 115 days.
    • @Povertyman would probably tell you that JB #45 would have kept his composure and not buckled down the stretch like that.
    • @purge73 would definitely tell you that @Povertyman is just all bitter and bent out of shape, and that he knows this personally.
    • There are two sides to this and why can’t we all get along, you hopeless, comedic, melodramacists … ?!!

It’s just a word people. Kids know it already, and if you don’t make a big deal about it then they don’t care. It’s when you make a big deal about it that the word becomes cool. I’ve let my 6 year old use his words freely, and he uses it less than any other kid his age.

Quick has a pass IMO, not only becuase he was the (expletive) MVP, but because it’s not that big of a deal. Stop being so uptight everyone.

The last minute of the call by Bob and Jim and OUTSTANDING!!! Had they just ended the rally right there I would’ve been satisfied! Great time inside Staples! Took the family, had a blast, the barn rocked so loud it was amazing! DS stole the show! He even spoke so clearly into the mic!

everybody has chirped in about JQ already, and I didn’t know that anyone was offended by it until this morning when Roger “the saintly one” Lodge kept going on and on about if anyone was offended by it (yet he went on to play the clip at least 10x)… Alls I knows is that when JQ said what he said, everyones screams and cheers went up about 10 notches! He loves this team for what they did in front of him and for what they helped him to achieve! It was heartfelt and plain emotion speaking. It was a departure from the mousy goaltender we always see and hear giving postgame credit to all around him while deflecting personal praise! My 3 year old boy wasn’t even paying attention or hanging on every word that was spoken into the mic yesterday so I know he didn’t clutch the pearls or ask me “what did Quick say Dad? Did he really say the F word three times Dad? Is he a bad guy Dad? Do we have to go and cheer for the ducks now Dad?”

And if you think JQ was the only intoxicated one up there, you’re utterly mistaken! obviously, it is what it is and what it is, is a grown mans sport filled with grown man actions and grown man words. This game aint for the Ned Flanders’ of the world!

GMFKG!!! you bring home the CUP for us and you set goaltender records the way you did you can say whatever you feel like saying!!! isn’t there a little saying about sticks and stones??? all this talk is more than it deserves. proof positive that PC is not the progression to a better world.

My only gripe (and it’s one that I’ll gladly endure next season around this time agian) was the herding of hundreds of fans through about 7 doors on the figueroa st. entrance… I could not for the life of me understand why more entrances were not open! But alas, small fries compared to all the beautiful memories that yesterday brought this kings fan and his family!!!
