According to the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Police Department estimated a crowd of 250,000 at today’s parade. Amid all the celebration, there was one “uh oh’’ moment in the parade today. Near the end, the buses encountered a support wire that was strung across Figueroa, just a couple feet above the tops of the buses. Everyone escaped decapitation, although were a lot of last-second ducks out of the way. The people in the back of each bus turned around to warn those behind. Willie Mitchell, at 6-foot-3, was one of the people in biggest danger…
MITCHELL: “We had some laughs. We were looking at the next bus. [laughs] `Hey, the wire is coming. Who is going to lose their head?’ It was actually funny. At the start (of the parade), I was like, `Hey, I’m going to stand up and enjoy this.’ It was pretty cool when we first drove up and all the cars were honking their horns and stuff like that. I was like, `All right, I’m going to enjoy this.’ Everyone was ecstatic, and then all of a sudden, it was like, `Uh oh, overpass.’ I was like, `OK, it’s been a good ride. I want to try to repeat. I don’t need a concussion that ends my career in the Stanley Cup parade.’ [laughs] Everyone thought it would be with a hit.’’
