Kings managed to keep their heads in parade

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Police Department estimated a crowd of 250,000 at today’s parade. Amid all the celebration, there was one “uh oh’’ moment in the parade today. Near the end, the buses encountered a support wire that was strung across Figueroa, just a couple feet above the tops of the buses. Everyone escaped decapitation, although were a lot of last-second ducks out of the way. The people in the back of each bus turned around to warn those behind. Willie Mitchell, at 6-foot-3, was one of the people in biggest danger…

MITCHELL: “We had some laughs. We were looking at the next bus. [laughs] `Hey, the wire is coming. Who is going to lose their head?’ It was actually funny. At the start (of the parade), I was like, `Hey, I’m going to stand up and enjoy this.’ It was pretty cool when we first drove up and all the cars were honking their horns and stuff like that. I was like, `All right, I’m going to enjoy this.’ Everyone was ecstatic, and then all of a sudden, it was like, `Uh oh, overpass.’ I was like, `OK, it’s been a good ride. I want to try to repeat. I don’t need a concussion that ends my career in the Stanley Cup parade.’ [laughs] Everyone thought it would be with a hit.’’

@kb, Yea I’m thinking they know, even though it will most likely get tougher and tougher, they have a long-run playoff team here. I hate to lose any of the guys, but now people see what we have and many will WANT to come here who maybe didn’t really know/want to before. We’ve had the D and goaltending for a while, and now we obviously have the O to go with it (and I only see it getting better), so as I was thinking the other day, once we lock Quick up, along with the others we have locked up for a bit, we should be right there for at least 5-6 years… It all starts in the room, and DL knows that. He’s built/building quite the force!!!

I absolutely love the work he puts into his game and his willingness to teach and be that safety net for younger defensemen. He comes off as the type of guy who gets more pleasure from preventing goals than scoring them.

Off the ice, throughout the season, young Mr JQ appeared “saintly” though wound up and sequestered in a self imposed container.
Although no one rubbed it or wished for it, today, like a magic genie, he burst out of the bottle!
Upon reflection, maybe it was more like a fountain of champagne, actually …
JQ was one of the last to shave off his playoff scruff and may possibly be one of the last to sober up after the endless excesses experienced since Monday.

It was absolutely amazing seeing all these Kings fans in the subway, the metro and along Figueroa. I can’t imagine what the team thought seeing so many come out for them and almost everyone was wearing Kings sweaters or shirts.

We go to the games and see 18000 fellow fans. We have friends and co-workers we can share hockey talk with. But it’s always a small hockey world in Los Angeles. Many fans, but often closet fans. Today, it felt so fantastic to see so much support for the team and sport those of us that comment and read this blog love.

Less so nowadays, for the commonality.

    370455VinSD Reply:

@Duncanz, Being in San Diego my jersey is still a bit of a novelty but the reaction has evolved from pre-playoff quizzical smiles (or my favorite, the smile that seems to say “how cute, he likes those plucky little Kings”) to the mid-playoff “I hope they do it man!” to what I am getting now. I went out to dinner last night with my wife and got high fives (one, I kid you not, from a guy wearing a 2011 Bruin’s Stanley Cup hat) and even some Go Kings Go chants. It is amazing. My wife just thought I was attention seeking. I told her I’ve earned it with my 39 year wait.

That story sounds an awful lot like how I spent my school year. Ever since high school I’ve worn one of my jerseys on game days and it’s usually met with something along the lines of, “Don’t you own any other clothes?” but towards the end of the school year as we were getting deeper into the playoffs I was getting honks, Go Kings! and high fives.

    IceGuy Reply:

    @Scarletcat,

    My best story:
We were at the corner of 7th & Fig (Hey, there’s a Starbucks!)
About 30 mins before the Parade actually started, a fellow with a bullhorn set up on the sidewalk, declared it a “Free Speech Zone” – which it is – and started to prattle on about government and corporate conspiracy theories, taxes, and military/police takeover scenarios. When Officer Sherwood, standing in the street pleasantly chatting with the crowd, cast an eye toward the guy, the amplified diatribe suddenly included how much we all love the LAPD. No one questioned the guy’s Right to be there, but you could tell the annoyance level was rising. Finally, the crowd took its own action – loudly chanting “Go Kings Go”. Loud enough in fact, that you couldn’t hear his bullhorn lecture.

He wisely gave up and moved south on Fig toward Staples. The chant stopped. A pause to make sure he had gone, then a loud cheer! We all could hear him begin his rants start again about 100 yards away, then – “Go Kings Go!” from that crowd. Another cheer. 10 minutes later, and a fainter “Go Kings Go!” further south on Fig.

I wonder if the guy finally got the message? You can say whatever you like – but really – the time and place was not going to work out for him. The mass of people were all there to cheer our Kings, which we did at volume.

I would also like to make the point that the crowd, at least where we were, came to have a good time. The Police presence was considerable, but totally unnecessary. Someone from the crowd shouted, “You guys really don’t need to be here.” Officer Sherwood smiled. “Yeah, this ain’t Vancouver,” drifted out of the crowd.

    Officer Sherwood laughed.

Here’ my little story of the Cup…

So before the Final series I ordered myself a jersey. I spent a lot of time deciding which player to get and wear to the games. My favorite is Kopi and my son already wears that proudly. There are a ton of Kopi’s and Brown’s so I decided to get someone else. Someone almost nobody wears.

I thought and thought and decided on Carter. We needed for him to come through badly. I think he did btw. Then he got the game 2 OT winner. I was feeling pretty good about my new sweater.

Game 4 was a major let down but no problem because the series was still 3-1. Then we went to game 5 in NJ and the Kings lost so 3-2.

I am starting to worry big time that we may have lost the mojo. If we lose the next game then things will get very ugly. It’s a must win.

Before we leave from the city to JFK airport on our way back to LA for game 6, I notice that our flight leaves from Terminal “7″, Gate “7″… “7 7″. Call me stupid but I knew then that the Kings were going to win in Los Angeles.

Good ol’ 77 got the game winner too. I think he led the Final in goals but I am not positive. So my jersey selection brought some good luck.

    What a season!

Loved everything about the celebration today… except Quick’s F-bombs. To me, it cheapened what was an otherwise dignified celebration. But the worst part was that my 5 and 7 year-old boys heard it, and my 7 year-old repeated it. Quick should know better – he’s a Dad. Perhaps it’s that his daughter is still so young and he isn’t thinking about stuff like that. Perhaps he had one too many beers with the councilman on the bus. At least Brownie expressed some regret for his heat of the moment F-bomb on NBC after they won it. I hope Quick does the same.

I love the Kings, and I love Quick and appreciate his role in bringing us a championship, but that really cheapened the moment. You’re not Charles Barkley, Quickie! You’re a role model, if to no one else but your daughter.

Seriously, you’re upset….about an F bomb? And I say this as a woman that makes a concentrated effort to use “fudge” in public because of kids. Much as the rally was about family and celebration, they’re still grown men acting like boys at the moment. Next time Quick speaks, pretty sure he’ll be peachy keen but this is something else…basically, fans were invited to the party, not the other way around. We were allowed in but that doesn’t mean we have to expect them to be perfect. They cuss. They’re athletes. It happens. If you ever watched their micced up bits, you know they cuss. It just is. He’s 26 and reached the pinnacle that people work for all their lives for. I’ll give a pass on this – and I don’t give out passes often, especially to athletes since I’m born and raised in Atlanta.

As for role model to his daughter? I’m pretty sure she knows that he’s awesome. Did you miss the care and effort he gave her right after winning the cup, outside of the press conference – just the pics of them on the ice? If you freak out as a parent, you make the situation worse. You calmly move on and the kid will learn and grow from the experience. Quick seems to be pretty chill and his daughter seems to love and admire Daddy enough to demand all his attention (press conference) which he gives.

    [Reply]

    Minnesota Kings Fan Reply:

    @SouthernJ,

Yeah, I didn’t like it. I’m not sure where you got that my response was to “freak out as a parent.” I didn’t. I quickly (no pun intended) hit the mute button and then told my son that we don’t use that kind of language and that it was not OK for him to do it either. Then we moved on. I don’t care what the circumstances were, you need to be aware of your surroundings and who is listening. I saw the bit with his daughter as the press conference, which is what made it all the more surprising and disappointing. When she’s old enough to watch this, no doubt he’ll mute that part, not say it was “OK because we were celebrating.”

I think if we wink and give passes to inappropriate behavior then we send inconsistent messages to kids about what is OK and what is not. It wasn’t OK there was no excuse for it.

@Minnesota Kings Fan, funny thing about the DB Fbomb was the next day on the Petros and Money show they asked him about it, and he said something about NBC expects you to do a postgame on-ice interviews seconds after winning the cup and with all the emotions that are bubbling/percolating/overflowing it was virtually impossible for him to even think clearly. And with all that being said he clearly stated “I have no regrets!” So if he offered an apology, I’d be willing to bet it was because someone in a suit told him he should…

    WOW,how cool the Rally was….

But for now, the only tears that managed to escape these eyes, was when Bob Miller read Marcel Dionne’s email..Ever since I was a an older kid, I idolized Dionne, and in my eyes, the Kings have been riding Marcel’s greatness until now that we have Champions, and they made their own greatness.

I met Dionne once and he gave me a jersey, a stick and a puck, that were all stolen except the jersey as I wore it when we moved. I wish he would have taken the trip to be at Staples.
