For those who haven’t heard it — or just want to listen/watch another couple hundred times — here is the radio call from Nick Nickson and Daryl Evans at the end of Game 6. Incidentally, just to reiterate, the Kings do have a recording of Bob Miller and Jim Fox calling the game, and it will be made available at some point, although the exact format has yet to be determined.

@39scars,
No disrespect to Nick, but Bob Miller has always made scoring goals and winning 100% more exciting. You can just hear the sincere excitement and joy in his voice. Can’t wait to hear the call from Bob.

Great call by Nick Nickson and inspiring video. I don’t remember seeing some of this on NBC. And Doc Emrick kind of fudged the sentence: The Kings are the Kings. He needed to say: The Kings are the Kings of hockey. The Los Angeles Kings have just won their first Stanley Cup!
And here’s a nice article about the celebrations and looking forward:

@King John, CBC did an awesome job with their telecast. Their work put NBC to shame. I watched live on NBC(and NBCSN) on Monday, and I was very emotional. I watched CBC’s telecast on NHL Networks’ rebrodcast of game 6, and I was 2 times more emotional after I already knew what was going to happen. Their perspective on the game was not as one sided as NBC’s, and their coverage of the celebration was tear jerking. I hope the BluRay includes the CBC’s wonderful work

Just hearing his voice announce that the Kings are the Stanley Cup Champions caused my eyes to well with tears of joy. I can’t even count the number of times I heard him explain why the Kings did this or that one way or another on Kings Talk on my way home from the game. I needed his voice to help me decompress. Hearing that call fills me with the pride only a long-suffering fan can know. Talk about decompressing… years of frustration, hope, disappointment, and yearning fell off in an instant. If this was my reaction to Nick, I can’t imagine how I will react when I finally get to hear Bob’s call; I might cry for days.

excellent post!

I was reading the NHL.com postgame recap and glanced at the normally empty comments section at the bottom and that’s when I did a double-take. I thought we put up some good numbers here but I’d have to say this one takes the cake for a hockey story. I don’t ever recall seeing that many comments on any story anywhere, although I’m sure there is one.

@Scratchy,
Well, he’s right of course, although when I ran into my Uncle Gary in the hotel after the proceedings he did appear in a slightly foul mood. He didn’t say anything, but I’m guessing either he couldn’t fight his way through at the after party to get a turn at lifting the Cup, or he plain couldn’t lift it anyway.
That’s OK, one or two of the Kings kind of buckled at the elbows or almost went to the ice with the emotion involved in raising Lord Stanley, themselves!

Don”t post much, but when I heard this it made a 51 year old tear up. Went to my first game in 1970 and have been a die hard ever since. You either have it in your blood or you don’t. I was fortunate to take my 16 year old son with his Brownie jersey to the game and what a great experience, not just for him, but me to!! I’ve been spending the last 36 hours viewing all the highlights, but couldn’t find this yet. Thanks Rich. What a treat. Can not wait for the DVD of Bob & Jim calling the game.
GKG …. 2012 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS. What a great feeling to finally be able to say that. Hope everyone else is enjoying this as much as I am. The long wait now makes every memory that much more memorable.

@A_Cup_Before_I_Die,
Not to be a buzz kill, but don’t forget that the owners and the union have to agree on a new labor deal before next season, and many are speculating that there could be another work stoppage, albeit a shorter one than the one that wiped out the entire 04-05 season. We may have a truncated season ahead like the NBA just had. I’m trying to stay positive and optimistic about it, but I think a lot of fans aren’t even aware of that possibility.
My guess is that both parties remember what happened last time and don’t want anything like that to happen again, so they’ll find a way to make the season start on time.

@Duncanz,
I agree with Duncanz. Thank God, because it wasn’t good (which would have been a first for Bob Miller)!!!! I’d love to hear the “Do the PumperNichol Bernie” call again. My personal all-time favorite, and the only time Bob has ever “homered” it up. Edmonton deserved every bit of it!!! They were cocky as hell, during that playoff series, until they lost, that is….

@Duncanz, I heard that too, and it only confirmed what I was afraid of. An after the fact call of the game is going to be lame I fear. Bob Miller is the greatest play by play guy in hockey, but hearing him call plays that he has seen several times, doing re-takes when he messes up, and faking excitement during the game…. I can’t imagine it would turn out well. I wish they had just recorded themselves during the game wherever they were watching from. Having said that though, I hope I’m wrong, and I’m sure I will buy a copy and enjoy it.
Congratulations to every Kings fan.

Bernier’s finished check essentially finished the Devils after Los Angeles, which won 10 straight on the road, channeled its inner 1988 Oilers and scored three goals during Bernier’s five-minute boarding major.
“That’s a good trade-off,” said Scuderi, who had a huge welt on the bridge of his nose and stitches zigzagging on his lip and schnozz. “Not the ideal way to be out, you don’t want to miss any time,” — he returned after undergoing the concussion protocols — “but I don’t play the power play, so it worked out. It was a good feeling [seeing the glut of power-play goals] because I knew I wouldn’t have to score for us.” He laughed at his own joke.

@Stuart,
“I ended up in LA because of my head [terrible, career threatening concussion] and here I get a chance to bring the Cup [home] … to Vancouver Island.”
Never has an “injury” changed the fortunes of the LA Kings so massively for the better as the one Willie Mitchell underwent back in his Vancouver days!
You wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
But I wonder how he’ll rationalize it later on when he finally sits down to reflect …

Nick Nickson is the best-kept secret in media. Of course Bob Miller deserves all the love he receives, and I cannot wait to hear his call, but Nickson did a simply brilliant job calling the final 7-8 minutes. His professionalism combined with his enthusiasm and genuine joy at the outcome made for an exceptional call. His calls of the series-ending OT goals are incredible as well. I hope it is not too long before the Hall of Fame comes to bestow the Foster Hewitt award on Nick. What a fortunate city we are to have all four of these excellent broadcasters (Bob, Nick, Jim and Daryl).
