Darryl Sutter
(on his Game 4 impressions…)
SUTTER: “Played better in Game 4 than we did in Game 2. Differences (were) missed opportunities and Brodeur’s play last night.”
(on having the same mentality going forward…)
SUTTER: “Go play on the road. No big deal.”
(on what he will be looking for in Game 5…)
SUTTER: “Continue to play the way we’re playing. That’s why you play series. Unfortunately, we have some spoiled people that think that everyone wins 16 in a row or something. A little confusing to me.”

Re: Sutter, I’d wish he’d elaborate on the ‘Spoiled People’ he’s referring to. He obviously doesn’t understand the history of the sufferage on the fans of this franchise and the eagerness to close this thing out now that we’re at the damn threshhold. People are just excited. He can understand that.

@goldielocks, but anyone who was wondering why the kings have “struggled” to close out teams in game 4s is not really a fan of the NHL or the process of winning the SC. That type of mentality is purely from bandwagon fans. I was disappointed that we lost game 4 but I still had a smile on my face. I’ve taken regular season losses harder than I took that game 4 loss. In fact, I remember feeling uneasy when VAN won that game 4, but not even one shred of discomfort when PHO won theirs nor when the NJD were able to extend their season by 60 more minutes…
I thought that reporter got his just deserves with asking that question… especially to a man who’s only other trip ended on an excruciating 7th game… DS never expects any series to go less then 7 and if the league played a best of 11, he’d think that to be the norm.
GKG we WILL be champions soon enough!!

There has been a ton of very-well deserved conversation regarding the inequity that Bob Miller’s voice won’t be part of a potential King Cup-clinching. As I said , well deserved, for Bob, as well as Nick, J Fox…there’s another Southern California hockey ambassador whom I’d love to see present for such a momentous occasion….unfortunately at Christmastime 2007 we lost Stu Nahan…I’ll never forget David Courtney’s voice cracking as he got emotional over the Staples sound system announcing a moment of silence in honor of Stu’s passing. There’s a silver-haired goalie in heaven gonna make sure that last Devil puck doesn’t slid thru the blue and into the net. This one’s for you, Stu!

@Lavamantis,
the radio had the regular team of Nick & Darryl.
Bob and Jim are calling all the rest of the games, beginning with Game 4 so that, should the Kings beat NJ, there will be “live” game audio of Miller & Fox calling the game, that the Kings can somehow share with Kings fans. since the NHL / NBC own all broadcast rights, this would have to go through the NHL main offices. it is most likely to be sold on some sort of Stanley Cup Finals DVD that the league would put together during the summer.

I’ve been an LA Kings fan for 22 yrs now. Can anyone give me a good explaination why DS put in Gagne, who has been out over 5 months in the lineup…in favor of Richardson or Cliffy? I understand Gagne may have more experience, better wrist shot, but why would DS replace a player at this stage of the SCF when it appears nothing is broke? Then again, I’m not the Head Coach, “Right?”
[Reply]
PurpleRocks Reply:

@Cam, This is just my opinion and I did post it on another thread a couple of days ago but I will post it again here. Also Gagne is the active player in the NHL that has the most goals against Brodeur.
Just a few thoughts about the Gagne situation. In an interview after Game 3 they asked him when he knew he was going to play and his response was right after Game 2 – before they even left the building in New Jersey. That says alot to me about the class act that Sutter really is. First of all I believe he saw something in that game he didn’t like and he was quick to act on it. Second it gave Gagne time to mentally prepare. And Sutter, Gagne, and whoever else knew kept it in house Saturday night, all day Sunday, and Monday morning. That’s the way it should be – information comes on a need to know basis – don’t broadcast everything and start things you don’t need to. Plus I think someone on here posted a while ago that DS was doing 1 on 1 drills with Gagne in practice so you know DS knew exactly what Gagne had.
This may be a bit of an exaggeration but maybe Gagne playing got in Marty’s head a little because of his numbers against him so it loosened Marty up for the rest of the team to take advantage of him. I also heard Brown say in an interview after the game that Gagne coming back to the lineup was an emotional lift for the team after seeing how hard he has been working. And that’s coming from the Captain. I do believe more went into the decision to play Gagne then we will ever know – and that’s how it should be. In DS we trust! Just imagine what it’s going to be like to have DS with this team for a full season!

Ok, I’ve been an LA Kings fan for 22 years now. I know it’s very difficult to sweep a series, especially in the SCF. So far I have trusted DS and his coaching…but can somebody please explain why he decided to replace Richardson for Gagne in home games 3 & 4? I know Gagne has more experience, probably a better wrist shot than Richardson or Cliffy, but why make the change now? It’s not like the team was broke and was losing? I respect DS and what he has down with our team so far. I was at Staples Monday and Wednesday, and it just looked like Gagne was not fast (even on his break away shot). I just think that Richardson or Cliffy hits harder. I love my LA Kings and was just very surprised DS made that line change…then again, I’m not the head coach, “Right?”

@Cam, The Kings might not have been losing, but it seemed their game was slipping some in the last two games against PHX and the first two against NJ (1 loss, 3 OT wins). Gagne, when healthy, is a much better player than Richardson. Richardson is fast and pesky, but often seems like he has no idea what to do with the puck once he gets there. Gagne has amazing hockey sense and a true scorer’s touch. He has more playoff experience than any other Kings player.
Gagne was involved in at least two of the Kings best scoring chances in only limited minutes in Game 4, so I would argue that the switch is working nicely.

@Cam, I posted these same thoughts before game 3 when I heard of the change and was roundly criticized, so I support and agree with you 100%. Gagne hadn’t played in 6 months, we were up 2-0 in the finals and you (coach Sutter) what to put him in now? Looking back the decision hasn’t helped or hurt us (except 1 bad penalty) which is obviously neutral but what is it saying to the rest of the room? Uhh O I think something bad MAY be going on? It was the move a team DOWN 2-0 makes, not the team up 2-0.

I think the Kings have spoiled us to some degree this post season. They’ve rolled thru their first 3 opponents in short order rand look to be doing the same here.
Let’s go back prior to the Vancouver series…how many of us would have been thrilled to be going to a game 7 agaisn them? Same with St.Louis and Phoenix. The Kings have made this look a lot easier than it should.
So yes we have been spoiled, but I think we all know that it’s not something that we can or should be taking for granted. This series could very easily end up going 7 and we shouldn’t be surprised.
But I think the Kings will wrap it up tomorrow night in NJ
GO KINGS!

off topic but kind of sad news about Adam Deadmarsh.
Concussions will now prevent him from coaching behind the bench.
It’s a serious issue for some of these guys…
Good luck Deader!

@Crown city simtom,
I liked that team a lot. He was the heart and soul of that club. I always thought if he and Allison would have stayed healthy, they could have competed for a cup.
I think this is a better team though

@nykingfan, I loved the way Adam played, too. I remember he had a great series with the US winning the World Cup or whatever they called it. he had concussion incidents with the Avs, so I was concerned about that trade.
I love this guy. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Not much mystery with DS. Probably a big reason why the kings have responded to him. You probably don’t get much else other than exactly what he thinks you are doing right or wrong.

Even if it shatters them ..
if anyone wanted to know, it costs about 205 dollars right now for round trip tickets from LAX to Newark airport for tomorrows game, stubhub has tickets at 210 dollars. so for about half the price of a ticket to see a game at staples, you can fly round trip across country and have a 100 section seat at the devils arena

@red49er,
I wouldn’t be critical of a thoughtful contributer such as yourself.
Only two things I would take issue with here.
Apart from the assertion that no one who was scratched for Game 4 could have made the play to set up Lewie for the one-on-one with Brodeur that could/should/would have been the game-turning goal, I think one needs to take into account how a player of the superior skill and experience of a Simon Gagne is going to settle his line and therefore the team as a whole.
Also, i don’t believe it is an indicator that something bad is going on, as you say.
Some coaches believe, if it aint broke, etc. Others will make every little tweak that they can in order to give their team the advantage, including picking the best team available.
Coach Darryl is unsentimentally an example of the latter.
What I like is that he is not stuck in a telescopic state, not considering every possible option.
In comparison, I think Coach DeBoer, who is a wonderful tactician by the way, might have left the changes he has made too late to change the outcome of the SCF series.
In a nod to @Stuey, who IIRC coined the phrase …
“In Sutter we trust!”

@Duncanz, Cool response, not antagonistic, which I appreciate. My response is …. My biggest issue is the timing – how can he be ready? no rehab. games, no real contact ect…Another point I would make is Gagne is a top 6 forward not a 4 th line energy guy. I was neutral when Sutter was hired and now I’m a supporter. He was a perfect choice for this year and going into next year. After that I believe the boys will be ready for another new voice as Sutter has shown he can really wear on some players but that is well down the road. I also agree that a coach shouldn’t be 100% stuck in the ‘ if it ain’t broke mode’ it just seemed to me it was a move for a moves sake and risked upsetting a 4th line that has been really good in the last 16 games. A last note is you’ve cracked me up in the past with your Sutter dialog so keep it up!

@red49er, No worries!
Well, as I see it, the whole thing this series is that the Kings have foregone the heavy forechecking game you saw early in the playoffs, particularly in the SLB series, and adjusted to a less aggressive, more positional posture.
Therefore the 4th line is causing a lot less turnovers in the O zone, the CF goal in Gm 1 being the exception rather than the rule.
So now when that line is getting the puck it’s in the Kings’ zone much more.
Therefore, Simon Gagne, who is a better all round positional player and better carrying the puck out of the D zone than his predecessors, is the perfect player to come onto the 4th line.
Not playing too many minutes and getting physically overtaxed.
He seems fine to me and is creating enough Grade A chances for himself and others to cause that line to give the Kings an extra offensive dimension.
Great move for me because it stretches NYD more and gives them extra problems, as well as adding to the Kings from a defensive standpoint.
If Gagne gets even a point in Game 5 it will change your mind, I think.

Been a King’s fan since ’68-69. Wonder how many band wagon people will still be around if the Kings don’t win the Cup? No surprise Kings lost game 4 to the Eastern Conference Champions. I pick the Kings to win in six.

)
Funny I was thinking the same thing this morning.
Throughout the season the only Kings news that I read comes from Rich. It’s always been more than enouogh..no complaints.
Since the Kings have advanced in the playoffs..especially the Yotes and Devils series they’ve gotten a ton of national coverage..most of it poorly done. I’ve been reading and watching a lot of it tho. (It’s hard to turn the tv off when Kathryn Tappan is on
I can’t wait for next season when I get back into the normal routine of just reading off this site. It’s the only place to get true Kings information and insight.
Hopefully with a cup under our belt!

So today is the day before the actual day of being the first day of the rest of my life.
This is how I would change tomorrow:
Fire Louwiki
Fire DL
Fire Sutter
Hire Murray as assistant coach
Promote Kompon
Trade Brown and Quick for Parise and his compete
Train him to be heavy on the stick
Before our win I would send a list to the Stanley Cup guy with the correct spelling of our players name
Tell everyone where Gagne is
Between every commercial break I would advise the requirements of having your name added to the cup.
Raise ticket prices 20%, but not acknowledge it until 5 months later and explain we are making no money
…take no blame for any loss we ever had and respond to every question “I thought we played well”

I wonder when/if Sutter will think to start each period with the Richards line. That line is much more successful at putting opponents on their heels from the opening faceoff than Kopi’s line has been.
[Reply]
Only thing I’m concerned about is Quick is starting to get rattled when a player touches him, which is understandable given all the talks about how to beat him. He’s got to remember and try to keep his cool and not let the Devils get to him. Why because “it’s the cup.”
[Reply]
If we can slow this game down as we’ve been doing in this series we can weather the storm in the first 5 minutes. They’ll come out flying with momentum, but if the kings pursued their “gap control” more aggresively maybe the goal by elias and henrique wouldn’t have happened. Both had nobody within four feet of them and thus where left alone. Pressure, pressure, on the puck carrier; force him to make a play RIGHT NOW!
****PRESSURE, PRESSURE/GAP CONTROL*****
