Wednesday skate updates

After the Kings’ morning skate, Darryl Sutter declined to say whether he would make any lineup changes, but Simon Gagne came off the ice with the game group, while Brad Richardson stayed on for extra work, so it’s very likely that Gagne will play tonight. Sutter also hinted at that when asked about Gagne’s play in Game 3. “Hopefully he’s better tonight,” Sutter said.

The New Jersey Devils did not skate this morning, but the Devils are expected to make two lineup changes tonight. Veteran defenseman Henrik Tallinder, previously injured, is expected to play tonight in place of Perer Harrold. As discussed yesterday, veteran winger Petr Sykora is expected to replace Jacob Josefson. More notes and quotes to come…

I honestly wouldn’t care about this whole things if #12 just FINISHED HIS CHECKS!

If the 1st, 2nd and 3rd liners can do it, it’s embarrassing to see the 4th line handing out free passes. He didn’t make one effort to finish a check – basically the opposite of this team’s mantra. It’s especially difficult to watch since they’ve normally been head-to-head against NJ’s 4th.

    @Stuart,

Bard Richardson should be in. The guy has played hard and well the whole playoff. Gagne is hardly a game breaker at this point and his 6 minutes will get his name on the cup. Let the guys who battled the whole way play it out.

Whatever…who cares as long as they win tonight? I can only assume the scratches will get their gear on and skate around with the cup if they do win.

    **RE-POST**

FOR THOSE OUTSIDE THE KINGS RADIO MARKET – SYNCING THE RADIO BROADCAST WITH YOUR DVR

If you live outside the LA area like I do, here’s one way to rid yourself of NBC announcers without doing anything you shouldn’t be doing:

I discovered this during the 3rd period of Game 3. I opened my NHL Gamecenter app on my iPad to look at what it was saying about the game, discovered I could get the Kings radio feed through it, then delayed my DVR until it matched up. It took a bit before I had it synced up properly. I got to hear Nick & Daryl for the rest of the game! The difference in the quality of was huge! It is actually the first time I ever heard Nick do play-by-play on radio (there was that one time a couple of years back where he subbed for Bob). I remember him from when he was the color guy before Jim Fox. I didn’t know you could get radio through Gamecenter (the free version). Just click on what looks like headphones in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.

The key is to wait for a hit or a shot that makes some clear and noticable sound, hit pause, then wait for that moment as the radio sound catches up to the picture. It takes a few tries, but you’ll get it. It seemed there was about a 10-second delay from when something was on the radio feed to when I saw it on TV.

I imagine this will work most anywhere in the world if you have an iPad or some other way to get the radio feed over the internet.

For me, on my iPad in Minnesota, the radio was about 10 seconds behind the TV. I have a relative in the LA area, and am told it is as you described when you listen to the radio over the air. maybe the Gamecenter thing on an Ipad will work the way it does here.

    [Reply]

    matt stands Reply:

@FdoFmFull, I have to disagree. I do think getting his name on the cup has at least something to do with why Sutter put him in. Gagne played OK, but not at the level Richardson or Clifford have played at. To me, it was a big gamble on Sutter’s part, and if Gagne is in again tonight, I hope to God that he does not cost us a goal (or the game) on a defensive lapse. I would love to see him score a goal, but I think the downside looms larger than the upside; hope I’m wrong though, or that Sutter changes his mind and puts in Clifford or Richardson.

    [Reply]

    FdoFmFull Reply:

@matt stands, Let’s disagree cordially, as you have.
IMO, Gagne does not represent a defensive liability anymore than Richardson or Clifford.
I believe the reason he’s playing is that Sutter decided to add firepower to the Kings lineup in the aftermath of the first 2 OT games in which a snimper might have made a difference.
As a fringe benefit, he might have gotten the PP ignited (2 for 2 in Game 3), by the mere presence of Gagne being in the wings ready to displace a current PP first unit member). Yeah, this is a reach, but it’s all speculation anyways.
Bottom line – Gagne is in because in DS’s eyes, the Kings are a stronger team than without him. I have yet to see any DS move based on emotion.

IMHO, if the Devils don’t score in the the first, they’re done. They’re going to run out of gas.

I know they won’t say that it doesn’t affect them, but the grueling rounds they’ve played, the first time out of the eastern time zone, one day between games 2 and 3, and now one day between games 3 and 4?

All the while, the Kings have played far fewer minutes, have been out of their time zone a few times, sleeping in their own bed at least a couple of nights.

If the Kings can weather the 1st period push by the Devils, this series is going to be over because it has to catch up to the Devils. You can only live on adrenaline so much and at some point, you run out of gas.

is this a charity or a fight for the Stanley cup?
I don’t mean this just at you..it’s the same loony stuff I’m hearing from others..like having guys go into the lineup so they can get their name on the cup.

Last I looked we haven’t clinched anything and at any point the Devils can take back momentum and win 4 in a row. They’re in the cup for a reason, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they could. Why would you want to put a goalie who hasn’t played in 3 months into game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals?
Until those 2 pp goals last game, Quick was the reason we were up 2-0. A mortal goalie could have easily given up 2 or more based on the chances NJ got.

For a lifelong Kings fan of 40 years, this is an absolute dream come true. I am so thrilled at how this team has come together and given a relentless effort shift after shift since the playoffs began. I always knew the core of our team (Kopitar, Brown, Doughty, Quick) was the equal of any in the NHL. Kudos to management for the important moves that provided the catalyst for this championship run (Sutter, King and Nolan, Carter moves). I have lived in this city all my life. I have enjoyed multiple championships won by the Lakers, Dodgers, USC and UCLA, but the Kings have been “my team” ever since I first walked into the Forum at age 9 in 1972 with my brother and my parents’ friend and first witnessed the greatest sport on earth. Up until now, my greatest moment in Kings history was the Miracle on Manchester which I witnessed. I think what is going to unfold tonight will top everything. GKG!

The Kings have the focus. This will be the toughest test so far. They will play well and have no doubt gotten better through the series. No matter who scores first, the Kings will play all 60 minutes. We are all a little anxious, nervous NO! The Kings have the right mindset, the right players and the right coach. LA Sports history has changed and has a chance to change forever. Relax and embrace the pressure and nerves and enjoy the ride. For all of us that claim the Kings as our favorite sports team, this is special and very emotional time. Through all the years, it’s been a bumpy road to get to this point and some of us never wavered, we accept as part of the story and journey. Thank you Kopitar, Brown, Quick and countless others who have helped write the script to this point. There is still one special piece that is yet to be composed.

One last thing! Lombardi is a genius and his vision and execution is the reason we all have this chance to support and watch the Kings cement themselves in NHL Stanley Cup history.

Nobody wrote a script with a Hollywood ending. This is not “Cinderella” or “Rocky”. We’re not there yet. One more win to go. We’ll get it the same way as the other 15. Relentless forechecking. 12 forwards who check in all 3 zones. A 4th line you can trust not only to “hold the fort” but put their pressure on the opposition. A tremendous coach who ALWAYS keeps this team focused. Short, quick passes to get out of our end. 4 lines that are in better physical shape than the opposition’s when the game is on the line. A goaltender who just shuts the door and would stop a speeding bullet.

And a team that had played with tremendous heart.

I’ll see you all back here in about 9 hours as STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS.

i agree with others that taking harrold out seems like a odd move. he’s definitely been on of there better blueliners. i’m not sure about his +/- but i don’t recall any bad defensive reads and he’s been strong on the offensive side. taking out a good puck-mover when you’re struggling to score seems anti-intuitive.

i’d really like to see clifford come in for gagne, assuming clifford is in fact healthy. gagne wasn’t stunning in the last game (although he wasn’t bad either), could easily have a drop-off in his second game back, and really isn’t suited for a 4th line role. cliffy would bring energy, enthusiasm, and some more hitting, not mention that he could use the experience.

@Kingsfanforlife, The Devils have never been physically punished like they were in Game 3. The Kings can run them out of the building if they come out hitting clean early.

I keep expecting some absurd Canadian high drama controversy, like the first ever 5 on 2 power play awarded to the Devils for “sportsmanlike conduct” in showing up for the game, plus a game misconduct on Quick for being an American goalie who refuses to properly embellish when he gets run over in his own crease, thereby showing everyone else up.

But none of that matters this time. These are the new Kings! The Kings whose destiny shall be revealed tonight! (DS: “I guess you guys had me on that destiny thing, eh?”).

  46. Orr Not says:

Long time reader, first post. Had to share:

I was thinking a lot about the Kings coverage in the post-season, as well as the predominant talk coming from the teams they’ve beaten (and are currently leading). A lot of “fluke” this and “don’t know why we’re losing” that. And it occurred to me that the bottom line is actually very simple:

Human beings don’t understand what they can’t explain.

And the Kings meteoric rise to other-worldliness in this post-season, is pretty darn hard to explain. Sure, there are pieces that fit together. There’s talent. There’s chemistry. There’s fantastic coaching. But really, can anyone explain how it has ALL come brilliantly together at the perfect time, EVERY time?

The reason the media says it’s a fluke is because they can’t explain it. The announcers/talking heads give little respect because they can’t explain it. The other teams are befuddled by why they play well and STILL lose, because they can’t explain it. And the reason we fans are all so stunned and mesmerized, is because deep down, we can’t really explain it either. Sometimes things just happen. Sometimes the stars align and things just fall into place. (Of course with all the right components and hard work…I’m not saying this a miracle!) But that doesn’t give the media/announcers very much to talk about. And it certainly doesn’t give the opposing teams any solace in loss. But do you care?

IF the Kings win the cup, don’t bother yourselves with the media/announcers/losingteams…because all you will need to know is that it happened. Finally.

    GKG!

    [Reply]

    PW Reply:

    @Orr Not,

Its a product of East Coast Bias and lack of coverage during the regular season. All the hockey coverage is in Canada or the Eastern Rim. The Western Conference isn’t covered, more specifically the Pacific division. Sure, there is coverage of the Canadian teams, Chicago, and Detriot but that’s it. Additionally, the local coverage is horrid. No surprise to anyone, it’s all dodgers and lakers. So locally they can’t explain because like you said, don’t understand.

You would think that teams would ease up because the Kings were an 8 but that’s not it. They’ve had the perfect storm of team defense, goaltending, scoring, size, speed, aggresiveness coaching, experience, smart, disciplined, 4 lines contributing, and health. That’s how you win in the fashion they have.

Every variable is working and the answer is that simple. Any question about their winning can be answered in one or more of those variables.
