Sutter postgame quotes (June 6)

Darryl Sutter’s postgame thoughts…

(on the difference in the game…)
SUTTER: “Not much. (It was) pretty much overtime in the third period. Same as first two games.”

(on whether there was a defensive breakdown on Henrique’s goal…)
SUTTER: “It’s a turnover. Misplay between the defensemen. Not a coverage play. Can’t make those long passes and think you can get away with it.”

(on closing out series in Game 4 being “somewhat of a problem”…)
SUTTER: “Awesome. Close out a series (in) Game 4 [laughs]. It’s the Stanley Cup Finals. Game is the very same as the first two games.”

Get our boys focused for the next game DS. Every game we played down the stretch and in the playoffs where we played like we HAD to win, we did.

Only losses were games we felt we didn’t necessarily HAVE to win (Playoff clinching game 4′s and those last two regular season games against the Sharks).

Play next game like we’re down 3 – 2 and we will win.

    [Reply]

    zulov Reply:

@The Gondor, we don’t need to play like we are down. We need to play knowing that the difference between winning or being down is just a matter of time. The longer we wait to show up and play, the more down we are going to be. You play knowing that you are already down in the future and here is your chance to alter it.

Brown was much more active tonight, which is good to see.

That saucer pass from Gagne to Lewis was pure, and his anticipation to jump that pass at the blue line was awesome. Gagne needs to be in the lineup. Can’t understand why people argue this.

Noticed that Jersey is trying to counter our attack throughout the middle of the neutral zone by running a guy hard right back at it. That could end up in a big hit. But if we start sliding the puck behind their D we could get some big hits on their D and get the forecheck going.

  18. JackKentCooke says:

The Kings did not loose to New Jerser tonight- they lost to human nature. They came for a coronation, not a hockey game. For once I disagree with DS. This game was not at all similar to the first two games in terms of the effort the team brought. I saw more effort in some of the Kings preseason games than tonight.
Daryl disciples bought into the doctrine of winning one shift at a time and that’s what got them this close to the finish. But they were seduced by the “devil” of pride and believed that they were as good as everyone was saying they were and forgot that you are only as good as your next shift. They have channelled Daryl’s words but failed to live by them tonight.
Those of us who have travelled far down life’s weary road know our biggest foe is not our competitors, our circumstances or the system, (are you listening Phoenix?) rather our most formidable foe is ourselves. “We have seen the enemy and it is us.”
In the fist two periods the Devils played like a team expecting to loose but the Kings played like a team expecting to win by showing up. By the third period NJ realized that the Kings weren’t much interested in putting up much of a fight and seized the moment.
A Kings crowd that came early in a julibant mood had the life sucked out of them as we watched our team go through the motions.
I’m optimistic tonight will serve as a lesson learned but it was a most disappointing lost opportunity for the home fans to celebrate as never before. It was the Failure on Figueroa.

    zulov Reply:

@JackKentCooke, they are young guys. I agree. I noticed it in the pre-game interviews. They were talking about staying focused but u could see that they were in a bit of a trance. Instead of the honest denials of being winners, they al seemed to say, yeah we are winners but we can’t approach it like that.
Which is of course an oxy moron. Winning 4-0 last game didn’t help. They really bought into the hype secretly.
They just need to stay out of their heads. Stay out of the idea that they know how anything goes. They need to play hockey and fight for every inch on the ice.

    [Reply]

    TiredOfIt Reply:

@JackKentCooke, Totally disagree respectfully, IMHO this was a case of “semi” stage fright. Can you imagine how nervous they all felt and what pressure they put on themselves to win it for us? These boys have played their guts out and using the word “failure” to describe ANY part of their incredible run is inappropriate. You are a long time contributor JKC and I for one enjoy your postings very much, but tonight you are “off the mark” a tad. This, again, IMHO. Go Kings Go

    [Reply]

    zulov Reply:

@TiredOfIt, in jack’s defense, he is not calling the boys failures. He is essentially saying what you are. They failed to win a game that could have been theirs. Jersey was less effective tonight in many ways than game 3.

Stage fright is based on the feeling that u have something to lose. That you have something to be proud off. That’s why jack talks about loosing to human nature.

The guys are great, done great things by focusing on the work, the game. And not worrying at all about their egos.

It’s hard of course when every idiot reporter is trying to get their “feelings” on being the greatest team ever. Quick is being asked on how nice it is to have kids looking up to him. He doesn’t need that thought in his head.

    It’s all.bull.

Point being that jack sees that the kings are physically stronger, better hockey team than jersey. If the kings focus, its a win tonight.

    Something was slightly off. Mentally.

@JackKentCooke, I thought the team outplayed the devils. We definitely had more scoring chances. Just not enough to overcome a great game from Brodeur and some unlucky bounces.

    [Reply]

    Jon G Reply:

@EternalOptimist, I actually felt we had the game well in hand. After a fairly strong start by the Devils they couldn’t seem to get much of a forecheck going in the second period. I thought they were done.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @Jon G, @EternalOptimist,
I felt they did also. They simply didn’t convert over the long periods when NJDs were looking forlorn and desperate for ideas.
For this reason I agree with @JackKent Cooke in that there was not that extra charge of electricity injected tonight as there was in Periods 2 & 3 on Monday night.

    renz Reply:

@JackKentCooke, I have to say I didn’t see it the same way. I will say the Kings did not play well in the third period, and I felt that’s where they really fell off in terms of going after the game. I thought NJ played better in the third. But the Kings played well in the first two periods. They put pressure in the offensive zone as many or more times than NJ did. Kings created more scoring chances than the Devils. They hit the post what, 2 or 3 times? Replays showed these were well executed plays, but did not convert. Even the Devils coach commented on how the momentum was going back and forth. So, I think the play was there for the first two periods, but they really played poorly in the third.

I actually don’t find it all that surprising to be honest. When you strip away all the attention and focus of the fact it was the fourth game and all were looking for a sweep, etc., what you get is actually a very similar game to the first two. Hard fought, fairly even, with several momentum swings, changes in forecheck presure with neither team being very dominate for any extended periods of time. Game 3 I felt was a dominate performance by the Kings, but game 4 didn’t seem all that different than the pay we saw in the first two games. I think bounces, and timing were definitely not in our favor. The Kings hadn’t really played a bad third period in the series until this game.

So, it’s off to another road game win now.

Bottom line is if the kings understand that at the end of the day everyone is headed for a loss unless they sieze the moment and alter the future, they have the power to become a dynasty. For this team, as we have seen all year, its all mental. They have the right skill, speed, size, and talent to beat any team in the world who are playing their best game. In these playoffs, the only time the kings looked out classed was game 4 vs. The sisters. But even then, it had a lot to do with mentallity.

I have to say the refereeing in the cup final has been pretty sub par this year. I usually don’t notice the refs at all in past finals, but have this year. What seems like a sure penalty are not getting called while marginal ones are. MSalvador corkscrews Carter behind the net right in front of a ref and no call (though he did penalize him right after for marginal interference). Stoll got a penalty for a phantom slash. The clarkson hit on brown was marginal. I can’t believe these are the best refs available.

The Kings had better and more scoring chances tonight than in games 1 or 2. What was it 2 or 3 post? Penner, Gagne, and Lewis with breakaways. If they get those chances in game 5 they win, I’ll play the odds.

    Duncanz Reply:

    @Osaka,
I feel very similar to you about our chances, with a slightly contrasting take.
The momentum has now switched to the Devils’ side.
So Kings must come out with a strong 1st Period in New Jersey, preferably with the results of their efforts showing on the scoreboard.
I am intrigued to see how (quickly) Coach Darryl and the boys bounce back from this one!

    @Mikey J., Me too.
Until the first NJD goal the Kings were under no strain at all.
The only thing is the strategy seems to be simply to outlast and wear down the opponent.
The Kings routinely play the 1st Period to come out tied.
They rarely hit you early and put you under the cosh for the best part of the next 55 minutes.
It would be great to see Kings grab the initiative more early, more often.
I won’t call it resting on their laurels as the Kings’ laurels are second to no one. But the team certainly doesn’t apply the full range of gears in the early part of games.
I still think we’re fine, but will there now be any changes in the lineup for Saturday?
The Kings may not be able to afford to play the same style of game in Game 5

Welcome to the life of a Kings fan during the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs!

They weren’t great, they weren’t bad, just not good enough to clinch the cup last night.
Since I can’t go off on the players I’ll just go off on the media this morning (not you Rich)

Pierre Macguire-For sanity sake lets please win the cup Saturday so that I don’t have to hear that pretnetious fool any longer this season. Either that or someone hire Greg Williams to put a bounty out on him while he stands between the glass!

Doc Emrick-Great announcer but the Kovalsuck excuses are starting to piss me off. He mentions how he must be hurt becasuse he’s been so ineffectrive. It can’t be that the Kings are checking the hell out of him and limiting his time and pace. He’s the only guy playing with bumps and bruises..or at least the only one worthy of excuses according to Doc.

Mic Kern from XM NHL morning show…I’ll save my true hated venom for this jerk. I love my hockey but this guy is forcing me to go listen to Mike and Mike again and find out whats going on in the only 2 sports espn covers..basketball and football. His great take this morning was he was glad the Kings lost so now they can’t, nor should they have been compared to the “great” Oilers of 88.
Rich won’t let me throw the F-bomb on the blog so I’m somewhat limited in what I can say about him. I guess he hasn’t realized that life exists in the lower 48 states of the US. Everything with him is about a Canadian team…Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton. I guess the moron hasn’t noticed how none of them have done anything in the recent past. Get over it Kern..the best teams exist below the border. He’s bored with the finals. Oh if only he could take that 2 steps further and not bother watching the finals or talking about it, we’d all be better off for it.

Now go get em boys in NJ on Saturday and bring the cup back to its rightful home LA!

    Go Kings!

Did not sleep well last night. I was menatlly exhausted from watching the game. I was so incredibly disappointed that the Kings did not win the Cup that I difficulty sleeping. I have never been so nervous watching a game.

I agree with Diego above – I sure didn’t pick 4-0. I picked 4-2. That being said, I was sure hopibng they wouldn’t be going bcak to NJ for a game 5!

I am thankful that I can see Bob & Jim out here in Minnesota. If not for their reasoned, clear postgame summary of what I just witnessed, I might be catastrophizing and freaking out. Yes, the Devils played well. They had to. Can’t be surprised by that, but the Kings played pretty well, too. They had their chances to win it and just did not get it done. NJ had their chances and they got a couple. I think the Kings getting that one just a minute after NJ made it 1-0 gives me all the reason I need to be hopeful for game 5. That and the idoits at NHL network.

When I woke up this morning, I turned on “NHL Tonight” as Doug Weight was blathering about NJ. It’s so hilarious how as soon as you win a game, suddenly you’r ethe greatest team on Earth! The Kings have had the same treatment, but really only after winning Game 3.Weight came to the conclusion that Adam Henrique was now as good as Anze Kopitar because of the goal he scored. Also, they (and the idots on NBC) were all “See? See? Shoot high on Quick and you’ll score ! We’re right! We’re right!” Those of us familiar with the fallacy of positive instances know that we humans look for information to support what we already believe to be true and ignore all evidence to the contrary. And boy, is there ever a ton of evidence to the contrary on that “shoot high” theory.

So, I am hopeful for Game 5, and I look forward to watching Dustin Brown hoist the Stanley Cup on Saturday or Monday. I don’t believe there will be a Game 7.

    Hang in there, Kings fans!

    GO KINGS!

@Minnesota Kings Fan, I don’t have the (dis)pleasure of listening to Weight or the guy NYKINGfan mentioned in his post above. I really think (and hope) the East Coast bias exists because the coverage is so much more focused all year on the East and Canadian teams, so they talk about what they know. Except for the Lakers, and maybe USC football, what West Coast team in any sport gets much national attention…unless they win a championship. So I think it’s more a case of ignorance than outright bias. Hey, I’ve been a Kings fan since 72, and back in those days got all my hockey news from Sports Illustrated…the week after the games took place. Just be happy the NHL is getting such extensive coverage now, however one-sided you deem it to be. Doc is a great announcer & makes the games fun to watch, Olcyk is decent and fair, but Pierre is HORRIBLE. Engblom should be doing his job between the glass. Thank you

OK Coach or whomever, tell me again why Kyle Clifford is not playing? He has been giving it his all for the entire season and now he’s not worthy? BS in my book. Play Clifford and we win. Also, it was just a matter of time before Voynov lost a game for us. Mitchell has been carrying him since his recall. The guy just does not win the battle along the boards. Been a Kings fan when most of you were making yellow poop in your diapers, so don’t tell me about “D”. C’mon coach, put Clifford in. He deserves his name on the cup.Man up

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Papa Ed,
Ihavwe no problem if they inserted Clifford into the lineup in place of Gagne, but he’s not going to be the difference between us winning or losing. He’s a role player the same as Richardson, Nolan, Fraser.
Also, I think you’re being way too harsh on VV. He has to get bigger and stronger over the summer, but he’s been a solid player for the Kings throughout the playoffs. I think he realizes that he doesn’t have the physical strength to match up with some of these guys so he uses his smarts and gets position on a lot of forwards.
He didn’t lose this game for us..we just didn’t bury our chances.

    [Reply]

    Minnesota Kings Fan Reply:

    @nykingfan,

Agreed. VV isn’t perfect, but I think he has played well. He’s a rookie! However, he has the experience of playing in a potential Cup-clincher, and I know he take that experience will have a great game in Game 5.

However, my highlight of the evening was the Devils fan that got escorted out of the ESPN Zone by security before getting pummeled by a swarm of angry Kings fans. My last rant against the media (for now :) ) what a shame that a questionable call by the officials tied up the hockey game at 1-1 ..forget the fact that JQ was bumped in his crease, knocking him off balance as the shot came thru for the 1st goal. If anything, the Kings have shown they can come back and win after a game 4 loss in these playoffs. This is the SCF after all, and they’re not playing some last place team so that they should sweep them. The Devils played like they needed to in order to stay alive.

The Kings had chances that they didn’t bury. Three of the four games so far could have gone either way, so having the Kings up 3-1 is good.

The Devils have some life going into game 5, but that game and all other games are going to be tough anyway. I think the Kings have not been outplayed in this series, so I still like the chances of closing this out on the road….and for them to establish a new postseason road record of 11-0.

If they expect to win this series, they need to play with more passion. It is driving me a bit crazy. I am not as exercised as others over the “East Coast Bias”. Considering the general futility of this franchise over fourty years , it is simply going to take more than one half season and a great playoff run to be included in the in crowd. We’re kind of like the Beverly Hill Billies coming to town and expecting to join Hillcrest Country Club. You want media bias- try being the Clippers in LA this year. It,s simply a “New Money” taking a while to be accepted by the Old Money” kind of deal”. “Just Win Baby” and we will get our due,

Lots of pressure to get it done last night and they didn’t have their best game bc of it. But if you think about it, last night was won in only about 2 inches. Two inches and the game would have been different. We’d have two more goals and they don’t get their empty netter. It was a game of inches I told my 10 year old son as he cried that they couldn’t do it. We can’t expect to get every bounce and we will get ours. I enjoyed the game very much even though we did not close it out. Maybe less embarrassing Hollywood fans will be around when we win it. Bandwagoners driving up prices.
