Saturday skate updates

Neither team is expected to make any lineup changes for Game 2. New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer did say that defenseman Henrik Tallinder, who has yet to play in the postseason, would fly to Los Angeles with the team and might be an option to play in this series.

How will the ice be tonight? The building was noticeably cooler than it was during Wednesday’s morning skate. Darryl Sutter took note of that, without prompting, and said it was a “big difference.” We’ll see what happens when all the bodies enter the arena and things heat up. More notes and quotes to come…

    Donald_S Reply:

    @FdoFmFull,

    I’ll take exception to that. Yeah, Emerick does spend too much time making up cute phrases to describe the action. But he can do something that few play by play guys do, he tells you who is on the ice and what the heck they are doing. Something of course that Bob Miller is the master at, but Emerick at least calls the action. Emerick doesn’t spend the time while there is a scramble in front of the goal mouth talking about what the players had for breakfast, like a lot of these guys.

    Who I don’t like is Olczyk. His commentary is kind of bland. I’d much rather have Brian Engblom of the available NBC guys. NBC should have hired Gary Thorne and Bill Clement if they weren’t going to have Bob and Jim call the games.

    Bill Clement is really good, not sure why he has been boxed out by NBC.

    Pierre is the one that bugs me….

    @King Cobra, I agree, Doc is ok but down with Pierre

    FdoFmFull Reply:

    @Donald_S, I’m good with Englom, Thorne, and Clement.
    I find Emerick annoying with that shrill voice, false sense of excitement with any pucks near the net, especially involving his beloved Devils around Quick’s net, and his verbose style. Cheap, cheap, and more cheap… Just not commesurate with the high standards I’d expect for an event of this magnitude. JMO.

    Cheers!

    @Donald_S, Emmerick is a former NJ guy and still calls Zidlicky, Zidlidski.

    @rumpa#19,
    Doc E might be correct, even though he and Zidlickety-split (better pronunciation) never crossed paths.
    MZ only arrived at NJD this year, from MIN at the deadline.

    LA_1968 Reply:

    @FdoFmFull, Emrick is good. Made his name as Devils play-by-play guy though. None of the NBC guys, or NHL Network guys, besides maybe Melrose and Weight, have a clue about the Kings. If this is a short series they will only learn enough about the Kings to forget it all by the time Philly, Pens, Det, Chi start playing again.

    [Reply]

    FdoFmFull Reply:

    @LA_1968, Look, don’t get me wrong, this is strictly subjective.
    I know Emerick has been around, it’s not the first time I’ve heard him. He was the Devils PxP for 21 years and his credentials are impeccable.
    It’s just as if I said that I prefer blueberry pancakes to banana pancakes, nothing more.
    It’s my personal preference and I just wanted to state that Emerick’s style rubs me the wrong way, that’s all. If the NBC Network brass chose him, I’s sure they have their reasons. If it was my choice, I’d choose someone else. Is all.
    I suspect I’ll live… Hopefully long enough to see our beloved Kings lift the Cup!

    Go Kings Go@
    Cheers@

    LA_1968 Reply:

    @FdoFmFull, I totally understand. To lend to your point, I wish he would have studied harder between the Conference finals and the Final to learn more about the Kings. How could anyone prefer banana pancakes to blueberry is beyond me.

    Duncanz Reply:

    @FdoFmFull,
    Splitting hairs, but Doc announced 12 years at NJDs.
    He had two stints, the first of 4 years, the second of 8 years ending a little under a year ago.

    First goal would be nice. If Jersey gets the first, I say we need the second. I think Jersey is all-in tonight. No one has been able to throw a knockout punch at the Kings. All opponent strategies have – ultimately – failed. Can’t see Jersey getting back into this thing if they lose tonight.

    That’s why they’re going for the knockout punch. The Kings need to be patient and mindful or that, IMO.

    Enter “Bitter Beer Darryl” and notice:
    1) physically and emotionally ready to play,
    2) nothing is left to chance, every player is reminded to stay in the moment and do their part,
    3) adjustments are made based on what results, tactics, and techniques the rival used in the previous battle,
    4) the game-day tactics are reduced to actionable tasks that are planned, discussed, and practiced,
    5) last-minute reminders and game faces are applied on game day…

    This is all leading up to the game, don’t forget that DS is a superb real-time Zen Master Tactician in the heat of the battle!
    However, there’s only so much you can prepare, it’s always down to the warriors to decide the outcome…

    Expect the first 10 min from the Devils to be like nothing that we have yet seen in the postseason. That being said….
    If we walk out 2-0 in games, game 3 will also be intense, but I think that question marks will have crept into the minds of the Devils and their game won’t be the same–regardless of how professional their attitude may be.

    No team has gone up 2-0 on NJ during these playoffs. The Kings will also be “all in” this evening, knowing that a win will not only establish dominion of the series, but will ram the stake of doubt in the Devils’ collective heart. Win tonight, and the Cup can be in our building Wednesday evening!
