Since the question/topic comes up from time to time, some folks might be interested to know that Kings owner Philip Anschutz and his wife, Nancy, attended last night’s game. I’m not sure if this is commonly known or not, but Mrs. Anschutz is an intense Kings fan. She was probably surprised and displeased to read, the other day, the New York Post report — through unnamed sources — that both the Kings and New Jersey Devils are for sale. It made for an intriguing headline on the eve of the Stanley Cup Finals, but on the Kings’ end, the story was dismissed by governor Tim Leiweke and by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. The exact same report surfaced early last year, was similarly denied, and nothing ever came of it. Here’s what Bettman told reporters yesterday, when asked during his general pre-Finals news conference…
BETTMAN: “It never ceases to amaze me when a newspaper writes a story and the principals involved absolutely deny it, and they could be the only source. But The Post was told by Tim Leiweke, and by us, that the story was categorically untrue, the Kings were not for sale. But they said they had their own sources and they decided to go with the story anyway. OK, the story is not true. If anybody here is from The Post, I apologize if I offend you, but the story is not true.’’
On the subject of league communication, ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun reported yesterday that the league will not discipline any of the Phoenix Coyotes for their actions and words in the immediate aftermath of the Western Conference Finals, but that the league didn’t appreciate what the Coyotes did, and let them know. Full details are available by clicking here.

I am livid.

Mr. Bettman, can you PLEASE get it through your THICK HEAD that you are projecting an IMAGE of what hockey is to people who MIGHT get into the game.

If they proceed with caution and don’t do anything stupid next season then it goes away. I guess what I’m saying here is to forgive, as long as they don’t think they got away with something. My biggest concern is Mike Smith and his antics. Can’t be using your stick as a weapon and he did it twice! (Brown and Richards)

Gotta let it go, only shift that matters is the one you’re currently skating or, if it’s between games, the next shift you’ll skate. That’s exactly why PHX is still crying about a legit non-call and The Kings are 3 wins away from The Cup. We only need to worry about now… what’s done is done, play your best right now.

@Itchy, Look, understand it’s almost like I have a split personality. Of course, like everyone else here I understand the number one priority is to see the Kings get those last 3 wins.
But as a HOCKEY fan I feel I also have a responsibility to the game which is the greatest sport in the world. A game I want to see all my friends get into and learn. A game which would be so much more popular if it had a BETTER IMAGE.
Conduct like the Coyotes discourages people who are “on the fence” about the sport from getting into it.
And when that happens I HAVE to speak out.
And when our league does nothing about it, it’s a joke.

How can Yandle not be fined, I don’t understand. Coachs get fined all the time for saying the officiating was horrible. Bur for Yandle to say that the officials were playing for the Kings is saying the games were rigged. That deserves not only a fine, but to tell Yandle if he still feels that way, his contract is null and void and he is free to play hockey in Russia.

I think it’s up to owners of the teams to put pressure on the NHL to rid these unsportman-like play of guys like kessler, clowe, smith and all. Obviously, Bettman will not take actions because it involves the Yotes in which he is trying to spread hockey in AZ.
I’m not sure, but if I was a mother that had a son interested in playing hockey or a person on the fence deciding if I want to be interested in watching the game I would say NOT because of these cheap shots you see in the game. It gives one a bad taste deep inside. I know growing up my parents friends said they don’t like hockey because of the fights. It’s a very difficult game to appreciate and undstand when passion run high in a negative way like the Yotes demonstrated last game. Hockey will ALWAYS be a secondary sport for most Americans because deep inside dirty plays are ones that people will always remember. NHL has never done enough to curtail these antics. Ask anybody who doesn’t know about hockey they will say “too much fighting, too violent,” all the negative stuff. It’s hard for a non hockey fan to get rid of these gut instincts, but can you blame them?? The league will grow but will always be secondary to most Americans because of these deep rooted negative images of unsportsman-like plays.

@rogiesbackup, Are you serious? “Hockey will ALWAYS be a secondary sport for most Americans because deep inside dirty plays are ones that people will always remember” WRONG! if anything, American fans are all about bloodlust, that’s why the NFL is so huge in the states. The reason it will never be a top sport is that it’s too fast and it can’t be readily played in any town/city. By too fast, I mean American fans need to reset between plays. football, baseball, basketball, all have breaks between plays (in basketball, the ball gets taken out of bounds after ever score, a foul is committes, etc, plenty of stoppages). It’s the same reason soccer wont make it. Add to it that the rules are not simple enough for most dolts to understand after the first watch. Dirty plays are the bread and butter for all sports. in football its the brutal hits, in baseball it’s the collisions at home plate, in basketball, it’s “rough stuff” that goes on between players…
It’s not about too much fighting/violence, it’s about not having the patience or desire to find out about the nuances of the sport added with the fact that most Americans turn their nose up to sports that “aren’t theirs”…
I wish the league would stop trying to “grow the game!” It is where it’s always going to be. It has a great following. Mr Bettman needs to stop thinking that he can make the game better!!

@Stuart, People like the “rough-stuff,” but just like you and me I’m sure it burns deep inside them when a guy like smith hacks ONE’s son in back of the leg or Doan’s face wash or a possible crosscheck to the face of your daughter or son….I won’t tolarate that. There’s a difference between “rough stuff” vs unsportman-like cheapness. Meaning, I would rather get hit(cleanly) by brown rather then get hacked by smith. I guess just knowing it’s a rough BUT clean hockey where good sportmanship gets awarded nothing more. I enjoy watching a good clean game rather then watching a game like the Yotes game. Not saying it doesn’t happen to other sports but hockey has been “known” for the unsportman -like play.
I’m with you, I love hockey and can see past the cheap-unsportman-like play but the average person that knows nothing about hockey(who the nhl is trying to get to grow the fan base)their gut instincts will you already know.

@Stuart, You’re missing the point entirely. If the reasons you give why Hickey won’t grow here are correct why has Canada never had a problem with it? Why is football still first even in the States that border Canada. Bench clearing brawls and cheap shots and head hunting happen from time to time in baseball, football and basketball too. There’s a BIG difference though and this is the point you’re not getting: in those sports when it DOES happen the league takes swift and decisive action against the perpetrators. The idiots in charge of our league just have the attitude “it’s part of the game”. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PART OF THE GAME. It’s a CHOICE. And if NHL officials would start making the RIGHT choice the game would be much better for it.

Stuart Reply:

@HockeyNerd, Maybe my point “the fact that most Americans turn their nose up to sports that “aren’t theirs”… is more of the reason why it will never grow to a top 3 in the US. the same can be asked about the sports/leagues that are big in the States never really taking off in Canada? NFL? nope, Canada felt is had to have it’s own league. NBA? Not so much, teams moved back to the states. MLB? not doing very well north of the border also. Maybe it has to do with economics and value of the dollar, etc… At any rate, American’s are very US-centric. The world loves soccer…does the US? No. they’re stubborn to a fault and twice as ignorant (mostly).
“Why is football still first even in the States that border Canada.” – maybe because football is first in ALL THE STATES, even the one’s that border Mexico. I don’t get what you’re asking here.
If I missed the point, as you insist, then @rogiesbackup made it more clear for me by saying that it’s about the poor sportsmanlike stuff, and that I agree with.
If anything you were missing my point which is the game itself is fine! In fact it’s more than that, it’s the best sport out there!
Look, be as incensed as you can be. Rail against the idiots in charge as hard as you can. Do I think the yotes should have been punished? yes. Am I going to get on a soap box and try to change it? No.
also a point you miss is that even when your BIG DIFFERENCE has occured, has it stopped the negative actions from ever happening again? NO. Everything that ever goes on within a game, is guess what, part of the game! Even when the action is so gross that outside organizations (police, lawsuits, etc) come into play, nothing comes of them, because it’s part of the game. yes gary should’ve fined them, in the least, but he didn’t and now we move on. Is this enough to make you stop being a fan of hockey? I didn’t think so.
GKG!

@HockeyNerd, just for humors sake… the stick swinging issue at heart here, does not happen very frequently. In fact, I can only think of Mcsorley vs Brashear, or the stick swinging that Hextall did years ago. These things don’t happen very frequently in hockey, either. Charging the refs and getting all up in there face? Doesn’t typically happen in hockey AT ALL, but happens ALL THE TIME in the other sports and there is never a suspension handed out for those incidences (unless a ref is touched)… So I guess I’m starting to feel as if we’ve talked it up so much that the original point(s) has been lost.
but to your last statement: what happens so frequently in hockey thats got you all worked up? And by frequently, how often are we really talking here? because to me, IMO, nothing happens so FREQUENTLY in hockey that would force mothers to cover their childrens’ eyes or so frequently that a new set of rules and regulations needs to be developed to save the ever-sliding integrity of the sport.

Ok, so if a principle denies something, that means a paper shouldn’t print the story? Of course not, that’s just silly. And how does he know they are the only source? He doesn’t. He has no idea.
Mind you, I’m just talking facts here. I’m not implying anything. Continuing…
“If anybody here is from The Post, I apologize if I offend you, but the story is not true.”
Ok, so if the principles can be the only source as you say, then Mr. Bettman, YOU can’t say the story is not true!
The only reason I bring this up is there have been many, many denials by ‘principles’ in the past that turn out to be very true.

The stink still hovers in the air: that somehow the Kings’ steamrolling of the competition in the playoffs has been illegitimate. They’re not the only team to suggest it, and the fact that they weren’t disciplined at all rubber stamps the assertion. THIS is why Kings management should be enraged.
Additionally, it’s clearly okay, if you’re Shane Doan, to commit penalties clearly of a head-hunting nature, and not miss games. It’s also okay, if you’re the poor guy who got left off the Vezina list, to play Paul Bunyan on the back of a player’s knees, and it’s FUNNY that Brown was called for diving on the play. If you’re on a team that’s been so “disadvantaged” as to have been called for SOME of the head hunting you did, you can just complain about the calls after the third game of the series, and the league will not only make sure the calls are in your favor for the rest of the series–they’ll also ignore statements that normally get you large fines and/or suspensions.

@Naturallawyer, IMO, he was fined for that because it struck closer to home. The idea that the officials were calling the games in the Kings favor because they wear the same colors is really weak smack! Lombardi’s comment sounded almost…”truthy.”

When are the Kings moving to Kansas City? Or was it Omaha?

@Gail Web,
Gail, you get my universally coveted vote for ‘Kings Fan of the Day’ for today, 5/31/12 !
This means you get to hold aloft an ‘air’ version of a modest imaginary silver trophy and prance about your living room while 18,373 imaginary @mes cheer you on for your achievements!

There is one thing that I simply do not understand and this goes back to the Clowe bench puck interference play. Essentially what Bettman and Campbell are saying to both long time fans and newcomers to the sport is it’s completely acceptable to 1, cheat 2, insinuate collusion and 3, use your stick to intelltually hurt an opposing player simply because he is standing in front of you. I mean it really is as simple as that. I am amazed that these two clowns were able to ascend to the levels of management (or mismanagement as the case may be) that they currently sit.
Bettman and Campbell are embarrassments to the league.

@SpencerMaze,
“essentially” is in the eye of the kneejerk beholder, really.
And did you really just mean to say “intellectually hurt”??
What if any minor Kings discretions or “hurtful” acts started getting punished inflatedly, all of a sudden?
You would just absolutely adore the thankfully moderate Messrs Bettman & Campbell, then ….

How about a commission for fair and ethical reporting. The Post should fire the writer, and the editor for printing a story they were told was false, beforehand. What a joke!!!
As far as the Coyotes are concerned, all four players are SCHMUCKS!!! All four should have gotten 5 games, at the start of next season (and not those B.S. pre-season suspensions, the regular season). Doan is a PUNK, nothing less. Coyotes fans are idiots, you never throw anything on the ice (unless it’s a hat), as player could get hurt. Just shameful…

@Chuck,
Totally. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein should have been fired too for using all those anonymous sources. Nixon told everyone it wasn’t true! How dare they.

The NHLPA should demand a new NHL head and board!

I didn’t expect any suspensions.. The team is owned by the NHL so I guess it was very easy to figure out that they would get away with that kind of stuff.

The following dialogue just took place at the NHL offices.
Secretary: “Mr Bettman, John Tortorella is on the phone for you”
Bettman:”What does that hairy cry baby want now?”
Secretary: “He says he wants ALL his fine money back…with interest”
Bettman: “Tell him to go pound sans. We spent it already”

So the Coyotes didn’t lose with grace….who REALLY does? Their misconduct in loss only reinforces the emotional commitment that these guys have to the game. There is no other professional sport that comes close to the amount of effort and engagement that NHL players put into their game. In the very unlikely event that our Kings fail to win the Stanley Cup this year, all of us will be expected to lose with grace….I guarantee this would not be the case. Even in victory we will have idiots that will ruin it for others.
