A bruise, and some bruised feelings

After all the calls for suspensions, fines, permanent bans, deportations, beheadings and the like, the Phoenix Coyotes revealed today that Michal Rozsival has…well, a bruise. A bruise to his thigh and knee, with no structural damage. Dustin Brown’s hit on Rozsival became the instant postgame flashpoint after Game 5, both because Brown was not penalized and because Dustin Penner scored the series-winning goal on the next shift. After the game, the Coyotes — particularly captain Shane Doan and stick-wielding goalie Mike Smith — were irate at the non-call, with Dr. Doan having diagnosed Rozsival as having a blown-out knee.

It is, without question, good news that Rozsival has no serious injury. During the handshake line, some of the Phoenix players took the opportunity to complain at, and threaten, Brown and teammates. Today, Penner was asked about the postgame scene.

PENNER: “I would chalk that up to (them) being emotional. After I scored that goal, I thought, `Yeah, that’s got to sting,’ because they were pretty fired up about that hit that Brownie laid on Rozsival. Then, on the next shift, to know that you could have potentially had a two- or four- or five-minute power play, and have a chance and that excitement of, `Our player is hurt, but we’re going to have a chance to win,’ but then there’s no call so you have that letdown. Then, on the next shift, we go out and score. It’s a recipe for what they saw.’’

Question: Were you surprised at some of the stuff that was done in the handshake line?

PENNER: “Yeah, I’ve never seen that before. I got chirped in line too, for my headlock I put on Vermette in Game 2. He wanted to rehash that. I was a little surprised.’’

Question: What did you say? Did you just keep going?

PENNER: “I was really surprised. `I don’t have time to talk, right now, about this. I’ve got a flight to catch.’’’

Question: He didn’t send you a BBM or anything?

PENNER: “We didn’t exchange PIN numbers.’’

Willie Mitchell shared similar sentiments about the emotions involved for the Coyotes…

MITCHELL: “I was in my own little moment there, enjoying the opportunity that we gave ourselves as individuals and as a team. I have a couple good friends on that team, so obviously when you shake hands with them, it’s a little different, that’s for sure. So I was kind of in my own little environment there, so I didn’t know until actually after the plane ride. I ended up finding out about the stuff that was going on. It’s different, but hey, I understand their side of it. We put so much into it, and they’re the same. They put so much into the preparation, the work, to get to that point. There’s a lot of emotion involved, and I’m sure they were emotional at the time, because their season ended. Sometimes stuff gets a little bit heated, and that’s why hockey is so great. The intensity level is at such a high level. So I was surprised by that, but also, I understand it.’’

Isn’t it funny how nobody (LAK) is complaining about Smiths
stick swinging incidents. The one on Brownie was certainly
done with intent to injure and he just barely missed Richards
after the series winning goal. If you ask me this guy should
have his stick removed from his equipment and be
suspended for 25 games next year. Shanahan and the NHL
should really watch the tapes on him. Good goalie but no respect
for the equipment he wears or any of the players, opposing or
teammates. THAT’S disgraceful!! Shame on you Mike Smith!!!

I agree. Up until his blowup there I was seeing a level of maturity in him like I hadn’t seen before. I will give him the benefit of the doubt though, he wore his emotions on his sleeve and understood the gravity of the situation (going shorthanded) and he just popped. Huge Kudos to the ref for giving him a long leash there and just turning away rather than trying to force the issue.

@Michael J, Doughty saved our butts in that game more than once, with the most brilliant being a heads up stop on a 2-1 breakaway that would have ended the game. He definitely needs to learn to argue without showing up the ref, but without him we were sunk. But, his passion and his gameplay all playoff long were definitely big boyish, even his justified loss of temper.

    BluLiner Reply:

@dcaps55, If it was a Kings home game, Doughty would have certainly gotten a penalty for inciting the home crowd.

@BluLiner, Refs give the players a lot more leeway on that kind of stuff in the playoffs; plus, I think they probably felt that given that kind of reaction, the call was already questionable….

And Doan was talking out of his butt and just assumed it was knee on knee and that it blew out his knee. 5 minutes after emilination you’re not reviewing tape or consulting team doctors. You’re going off what you saw on the ice wrapped up in the emotion of elimination. Time to move on.

Though it will be interesting to see what happens next season when they play after Torres is back from suspension. He’s just the player to try to take Brown out, but with his history and the way the series ended, do you think he/his coaches would risk ending Torres’ career over revenge of a legal hit that cause an couple bruises? You know if Torres injures anyone on the Kings he would be looking at a 1yr or even more severe ban from the NHL.

Smith couldm be accused on assault with a deadly weapon with his slash on Brown. Then he has the gaul to slash Richards and then shockingly he threw his stick in directions of the referrees.
So why didnt the NHl and guys like Kerry Fraser also discuss this as they critised Brown…Im just so incensed by all this….
Smith should go to prison, and Doan belongs with Torres…..Brown is aggressive and a terrific hitter but never dirty. I conced he can be guilty of a little embellishing, but that is not a crime….

I found it ironic that Milburry didn’t think Doan had time to hold up on Lewis, but Brown should have held up on his hit. It’s short sided, it’s narrow minded and let’s call out the elephant in the room here. Brown is American and Doan is Canadian. Sad to say it’s that simple. Even though I’d yelled at my TV multiple times over the past week as the Coyotes skated away from blatant penalties, even though I’d shaken my head at Smith as he made one final slash at Richard’s leg after the game-winning goal, I still found myself surprised at the way the Coyotes carried on during the post-game handshake, an event signifying good sportsmanship. Doan’s reaction doesn’t bother me much — Smith’s conduct during and after the game does. Doan spoke from emotion (although I do hope he retracts somewhat now) — Smith is both a flopper and a hack — his reaction (punching) to any King being pushed into his crease — and his overhanded swing towards Richards/Penner on the game winning goal coupled with his premeditated chop to Browns unprotected leg push him beyond the chippy range into the Sean Avery territory. I can’t say I wish him any further success going forward and I can see why it has taken him so long to find his game, he’s one of those guys who think that everything bad that happens is someone else’s fault.

Understandable behavior is not acceptable behavior.

Their complaints about the refs might have some meaning if they had won at least one game at home. The officiating had little to do with 210 Kings’ shots to 140 Coyotes’ shots. The refs weren’t dominating the Coyotes in Game 1, or shutting the Coyotes out in their own building in Game 2, or giving up a breakaway to Anze Kopitar in Game 3. In fact, the refs gave a sweet little 5-on-3 in tied elimination game in the 3rd period. It wasn’t the refs who failed to score. It was the refs who doubled up the Coyotes shot totals in OT. Did the refs block Whitney’s go-ahead goal in Game 5? Did the refs hold Vrbara scoreless in the series? Was it the refs fault, that, in addition to be being outshot, the Kings had a better shooting percentage.

By the way, talking about dirty plays, how many Phoenix players were kicked from a game? 4 (Doan twice). How many Kings? 1. How many Coyotes had been suspended in the playoffs? 3. How many Kings? 0. How many times did Smith slash someone with his stick with the puck nowhere nearby? 2. Quick? 0.

How many Coyotes complained to the media about officiating? At least 5 (including the coach). Kings? 0.

Which team’s owner pays the refs? Coyotes.

Most importantly, which team won the series? Kings.

Coyotes, you got wiped out by a better team. You showed up for one game, and you were done.

I’m not surprised at all that’s its just a bruise. If you watch the replay, you’ll notice that Roszival lifts his head, showing no pain or slowness, he looks at Brownie, and the ref, and then drops his head down in “agonizing pain”.

Another dive by a bunch of dive artists. I had no hatred for the Yotes before this year, but now they are up there with the other masters of the high dive, Cansucks.

    @QUICKsilver,
Brownie did the same after the Hanzal hit in Game 2, milking it I mean.
The Kings are great, but they’re no angels either.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen such a traumatized opponent in any sport (oh wait, there was that boxer who died in the ring). You almost never get such complete capitulation. This was more than just an elimination, it was thorough devastation.

… that reminds me, I should smoke another cigar.

Great article Rich, always enjoy reading Penner and Mitchell comments.

@Osaka, I understand what the yotes went through. I remember the Muni series with EDM, when Craig Muni took out both Sandstrom and Kudelski with open ice leg on leg hits. (I’m not comparing the hits, just the impact on the “victims”). The Kings were deflated and distracted by those losses and the lack of penalty calls.

I think this team knows what that team did not – hockey is not about justice. Hockey is a metaphor for life. True justice is rare and serendipitous. How you deal with life / hockey usually has a lot to do with (1) what you make of the situation when injustice is in your favor and (2) how well you overcome the many injustices that will befall you.

The old Kings were killed by such things. The new Kings fight on. Long live the Kings!

    Osaka Reply:

@Kenny44, Great post, agree with everything you said. I too understand how the Yotes felt but this wasn’t game 7, it was game 5. A lot went wrong for them in 4 games, not just the last 30 seconds of game 5. Still it is hard to go out like that.

Muni, now there was a tool, a guy who would look to injure players knees. They say the players now lack respect, sort memories we have.

    @Osaka,
Or, as Penner astutely put it, “Oh, that’s got to sting!”

Looking back on Muni, I remember opening night the next season was Kings v. Oilers, and the Forum crowd went bezerk when John McIntyre put a beating on Muni. Small measure of revenge – the kind the dogs will be looking forward to next year.

I’ve been coldcocked in the handshake line after playing hockey so none of this is any surprise to me at all.

    Kenny44 Reply:

@Osaka, That’s messed up. I’ve been jumped by a guy after a game walking to the locker room (not so easy grappling with skates when you’re off the ice).

But that does not happen in the NHL, in either case. There’s hockey, and then there’s the League.

    Osaka Reply:

@Kenny44, I never even knew I pissed the guy off, I had my hand out and he slugged me hahaha. Good old days! Dude I agree 100% it should not happen in the NHL. I see teams who act like that and teams that don’t, I think the team is a reflection of the coach.

    Kenny44 Reply:

@Osaka, I knew I that I had pissed my guy off, but good. I Tik’d him into some really nasty behavior that got him thrown out of the game (he was their top scorer, of course). I thought he was gone and never expected him to literally leap on me from around a corner while I was walking back to the locker room, with two sticks in my right hand and a puck bag in my left. That whole thing took a while to untangle ;)

Re NHL teams, it’s also a reflection of the captain (you know I had to do it).

Now that’s all behind us, bring me the East Coast Meat!

” It’s different, but hey, I understand their side of it.

For anyone who thinks Rozsival was faking it: you try taking that kind of hit and see how YOU feel. I’ve been hit like that and I thought my instantly that knee was blown out. I was glad to find out later it was the worst charlie horse I’ve ever had. It took a long time to heal.

True to form, the Coyotes, like their namesake animal, ended up as roadkill on the way the try to win a championship for the city of Phoenix. I’m glad a big, ugly silver and black truck ran over the Coyotes, especially for the following reason: who wants a bunch of unsportmanlike shmucks like Shane Doan, Mike Smith and their whiny coach Tippett representing hockey on its biggest stage? I probably would have a different opnion of those guys if they had manned-up and accepted defeat graciously, as anyone with a sound, respectful upbringing in sports would. The chance to lose is always there when you compete; you give it your best shot, and if you lose in the end, you have the satisfaction that you tried your best to win. Kudos to your opponent; you will get them next time, because you are a competitor. To blame anyone other than yourself for losing is childish and immature. Sorry that the fans and supporters in the great city of Phoenix have such a poor legacy from a group of unprofessional athletes; the real roadkill here is in that shameful image of players barking at the Kings in the handshake line. That image cannot be scraped up and buried, and will not be forgotten, unfortunately.
