Report: No hearing for Brown

USA Today’s Kevin Allen, among others I might have missed, reported this morning that Dustin Brown will not face a disciplinary hearing for his overtime hit on Phoenix’s Michal Rozsival last night.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Interesting.. Rozsival and Brown collide, going at the same speed, hitting the exact same parts of their bodies. Rozsival lays in the ice for a while and is carried to the dressing room by teammates. Brown stays on his feet and fends of approaching Coyotes. Conclusion: Either DB is one tough SOB(which he of course is), or Rozsival EMBELLISHED!

@801_Kings Fan, +1, but I will add that the areas of contact were legal. I was at game 1 at Phx just 6 rows off the ice and I just about never heard the whistles with the crowd noise. I mostly went by the hand signals of the officials.

    The Puck Stops Here Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, It’s very telling of Mike Smith that he even put Brown and Torres in the same conversation. I thought players could recognize the difference between a legal, clean (although perhaps late) hit, and a very late leaping headshot from which a man was carried out on a stretcher. What a clown.

    Harrison Merkin Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

Shoulder to shoulder. Thigh to thigh. Knee to knee. Full body contact all at once. The hit comes within a blink of the whistle being blown. Refs butchered that game and for the most part the series to be sure. Brown is no more a “dirty” player than is Doan. They both play on the edge and are going to come close if not cross the line from time to time. Smith on the other hand is one of the dirtiest player’s I have ever seen. If any one punched, slashed and kicked another player as much as he does they’d have a match penalty for sure. The fact that Brown’s body spun on contact only further illustrates that his intent was not to initiate knee on knee contact. It’s a tough loss. There was a lot of fight in them dogs but that hit did not cost them the series. It cost them a goal which just happened to take place after being beaten to 3-0 deficit. I think the Yotes have done themselves a dis-service accusing the Kings and the League of dishonest play and officiating. Bad calls went both ways all series long. It is what it is.

    [Reply]

    mg Reply:

@Harrison Merkin, agree with you on the Smith comment, he has no right calling anyone dirty the way he swings that hatchet (I mean stick) around all over the place.
Did you see that after Penner scored in overtime, he waved and missed hitting Richards?
    just plain wrong.

    Kings x Reply:

@Harrison Merkin, Doan is a dirtier player by far. Brown just embellishes on plays that warrant a penalty to make sure they get called. I don’t think he dives at all

  7. mcdangles says:

Like there was suppose to be one? Brown led into his hit clean with his shoulder to shoulder and the other player extended his on leg out to avoid the hit. Plain and simple, that is the way the refs saw it as it went down and that is the way the off ice officials saw it as well when looked over in video review. Smith, he is the one to talk when it comes to CHEAP SHOTS. His crack on the back of Brown’s legs was not intent to injure? He has done it more than once in his career if ya look at his infractions with his goalie stick on youtube. Suck it up Smith. Ya lost the game in overtime and see ya on the golf coarse in the Phoenix sun buddy!

Try to do that 10 times in a row and I bet you can never make it look as accidental. Horrible officiating. Before the OT goal i was thinking NHL conspiracy the whole time the way the calls went. It made me sad for the game I love so much.

  10. Kingdork says:

Kingdork personally feels that Rozsival was either out of energy, or was sick of the pressure. He didn’t seem to want to play and the play with Brown was certainly not the hardest hit he sustained during these playoff’s.

Minutes earlier, he was tapped by Penner and flopped to the ice in agony. I guess they were willing to pull out all the stops. All the while, Tippet is mum about embellishment.

Phoenix fans – throwing things at/on the Kings players, the Coyotes themselves taking game misconducts AFTER their season is over. A tribute to those fans before the presentation of the trophy. It was really pitiful and sad to see in the NHL

Should the NHL fine itself for all of this? Team is still under their control from what Kingdork understands.

Sore losers, worse than a Canuck possibly.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Kingdork, Doan was shameful all series, and Phoenix reporters are acting like the NHL is going to listen to what he has to say because he’s so saintly….frankly, I think it would be great if both captains had a private meeting with Shanahan to talk turkey, because I think there are things that need to be said behind closed doors. Otherwise, you’re going to have your next Vancouver brewing. Those things take a long time to run their course.

Kingdork would like to state that it may be time for Doan to hang them up. Kenneth’s frequency is spot on and we can’t have the league going in this direction (poor sportsmanship, unruly desert-dwelling fans) with a new bargain having to be dealt over the summer months. Hopefully it gets wrapped up in time for harvest.

@Drew Doughty’s Mustache, sorry, but I have to disagree with you guys. As bad as the fan base got in AZ, they are not anywhere NEAR taking Vancouver’s spot as the most hypocritical, whiny, and all around pain in the ass set of fans in the NHL.

@LyonLA, The fans maybe not (they didn’t burn Phoenix last night), but the players are far worse. At least the Twins and company lined up and shook hands like men.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@LyonLA, Agreed, PRMan, and what’s disappointing about them is they have real talent and don’t need to do that stuff. Phoenix–has to do that stuff. Ironically, though–the players doing that stuff (besides Torres) don’t have to do that stuff.

  11. DesertKing says:

Your kidding? No hearing? This is a travesty! Are we actually questioning the veracity of the Cryote’s organization? Are those Yotes not professional members of the NHL? Didn’t Mike Milbury and the other NHL Network and NBC commentators/analysts decry Brown’s actions? How could they, the true experts, be so wrong? An even BIGGER questions is, how could Jeremy Roenick be so right when he defended Brown and was the only one to do so? Roenick right, everyone else wrong, the Kings in the Stanley Cup Finals, what in the Hell is happening in this world? Time to head for the bomb shelter.

I can see next year if the league doesn’t come down on Smith he will escalate his frustrations by badly hurting someone. He is a loose canon…

No, you’re not seeing it right. Yes, he tried to slash Richards, however he does not raise his stick at the ref. In fact there are two coyotes in between him and the ref… He never cocks his stick like he is going to swing it. Believe me, I’m a goalie and lifting the stick in the air like that is natural.. and you must not have seen much hockey if you would classify him as a loose cannon… As for his slash on brown, yes a penalty, uncommon? Not by any means, it happens all the time and used to be the way the game was played…

  33. SRKeegan says:

I haven’t heard a single person mention that Mike Smith THREW HIS GOAL STICK directly at the officials after the game. This, moments after he tried to slash Mike Richards from behind after the game winner and just didn’t connect.

In 40 years of watching hockey, I have never seen a player intentionally throw his stick at an official in any capacity. That should result in a major suspension to start next season.

Mike Smith should have been suspended for the remainder of the series for blatantly attempting to injure Dustin Brown with a slash to the back of the knee. He was by far the dirtiest player in the series, with his gutless stick work and punches with his blocker.

There should not be a hearing. It was a legal hit. Get over it. The Kings are going for the CUP!

If it was Brown laying on the ice, would you be saying the same thing.

  40. Chuck says:

Nor should he. It was a legal hit. It came after the whistle, but it was probably .5 seconds after the whistle, and he had already lined up the hit.

I did just read on Yahoo that Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith wants a lifetime ban on Brown, because of the hit. What an IDIOT! I’m sure it was more of a “in-the-moment” comment, but still, he said it. A lifetime ban for a legal hit, yeah right!!!

Here’s the link, if anyone is interested.

Good non call by everyone. BTW in the play when Smith lost his glove, Rosival is seen to Smiths left and TOTALLY EMBELISSHES a non stick to the face, it was as bad as the Penner tap to his skate earlier. Amazing how Tippet can talk about embellishing and he’s got clowns like that on his team. Smith, Doan, Handzul, Rosival, Yandle not only did you get outplayed by the KINGS, you lost your composure, and lost the series. I do believe in karma for sure. Some comments they’ve made as a team are not only laughable but disgusting and insulting to the league and to their own fans.

    Go KINGS Go!

The fan base is so bad in Phoenix the local grocery store and gas stations were giving out tickets to game 5! Enough said!

If you’re on the ice and Dustin goes beep beep.
Just step aside or might end up in a heap.
LA Kings win on the road all day.
Even the Coyotes can’t make them change their ways.

Coyotes, the Kings are after you.
Coyotes, if Brown catches you you’re through.
    Coyotes, the Kings after you.
Coyotes, if Brown checks your butt you’re through!

That Coyote (Mike Smith!) is really a crazy clown,
When will he learn he can never mow him down?
Poor little Brownie never bothers anyone,
Just runnin’ down opponent’s his idea of having fun.

  48. Dustin Brown put a clean hit on Rosival albeit a hard hit at that. But it was legal. Rosival should have had his head up. Any contact to the lower extremities was not intended. Brown never stretched out to make a lower body contact. I’m glad the NHL is not having a hearing regarding the hit/ What happened though, was, after that hit, it took Phoenix out of the game. They seemed to let up. This team has the tols from the coaching staff down to the ground level to be a conter and to be champions for years to come. I don’t see The Devils or Rangers stopping these KINGS.

The hit was possibly questionable but so are a lot of hits. It irritates me that they see this hit as being so over the top. Yes a player got hurt. The only reason Dustin Brown is not out after taking the hit into the boards in game 3 or 4 is because he has adamantium fused to his skeleton and is self healing.

A total legal hit. Too close to the whistle to consider it late, get over it already you poor sport loser Coyotes. Your entire franchise needs to be eliminated. Very poor representation of the NHL, Bettman!
