Brown postgame quotes (May 22)

Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts…

(on the game…)
BROWN: “It was a battle, and Pens scores a big goal for us in overtime. It was one of those games where everyone was giving it their all. It wasn’t the cleanest execution for either team, probably, but we found a way to win and that’s the most important thing.’’

(on his overtime hit on Michal Rozsival…)
BROWN: “I haven’t really seen a highlight of it. Rozsival was cutting to the middle and I cut across and made contact. Obviously they thought it was kneeing. I felt I got him with my shoulder. My left side and his right side all made contact, from toe to shoulder.’’

(on debris being thrown on the ice…)
BROWN: “I can’t really speak for the fans, I guess. Seeing the players upset, it’s an emotional game out there. You give them the benefit of the doubt. Their season just ended and they’re upset and emotions can boil over. They were upset. Like I said, the fans throwing stuff on the ice doesn’t have anything to do with us.’’

(on whether the Kings took advantage of the Coyotes being distracted after that play…)
BROWN: “I’m not sure. The game-winning goal, it happened pretty quick. The draw, right down to the zone, shot, rebound, goal. I don’t know, really. It just happened so quick. It’s an exciting time.’’

(on whether any harsh words were exchanged during the handshake line…)
BROWN: “I’d rather not comment.’’

(on how it feels to reach the Finals…)
BROWN: “Pretty exciting. We have a few guys who have been in here who have had the opportunity, and a lot of guys who haven’t. It’s what you play for.’’

I had to keep things a little quieter than usual. My wife was putting my daughter to bed, but I still had to go in and tell them Mr. Pancakes had put us in the Cup final. So far in this run, Dustin P has been there when we’ve needed him most. Like he said after the game, tonight’s goal was his biggest to date. I’m hoping he’s got a few more coming. Go! Kings Go!

@JumboJack, His melt downs were epic. his play was good but erratic. the calls against him were questionable. He is very lucky he didn’t get an unsportsman like penalty on his interference call ( a good call helped along by a wily veteran i R Whitney). All in all he gets a pass for the bad because the end result was so good.

    luc20rules Reply:

@red49er, I agree, but I thought as DD knew, Whitney was holding his stick pulling DD back into his path. I read DD’s lips “He was holding my #@#%!@% stick!”.

@red49er, whitney is lucky he didnt get a holding the stick penalty ref will know he made a mistake on both those calls… the offsides one to… after repays

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@red49er, The puck was still in the zone. That is not questionable. That’s a bad call. Whitney was HOLDING DOUGHTY’S STICK for about 5 seconds. That play is not interference by any rule in any book. That’s a bad call.

As for the meltdowns, I’m fine with them so long as he doesn’t get any more time. The ref gave him a long leash on that.

Its nice to see you didn’t give up on the team like most fans its hard to give up on the team you love. DL has built this team to not just win this year, but for several year to come. Something that couldn’t be done if we gave Kovi the contract he asked for, or got from NJ. NJ can’t sign Parise with Kovi’s contract over their head, so they need to go all in this year.

Agreed, very classless their fans don’t deserve a Championship, I was able to locate tix for game 5 on stubhub for $30, although I couldn’t get to phoenix. The fans throwing garbage on the ice after the game just proves it.

Bring on the rangers, they’re gonna be worn out, and they really only play 4 defensemen most of the time. No depth

@Michael, I have to say I went to game 1 of this series and the Phx fans were good. Don’t like the Beat LA chant, but as far as being civil and keeping things hockey related I liked them. As far as the Phx team after game 2, I lost all respect for them, and Coach Tippet. @Michael, I disagree. It was an emotional moment where not only did they lose but a teammate got injured on what I’m sure looked like a knee to knee for the players at ice level. We have the replay they did not. Give them a break. If Doan hit Kopi like that we would feel the same.

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@Michael, I don’t have a problem with Doan. The man has fought for 16 years to get to this point, only to have it taken away in a blink of an eye. He is understandably emotional.

    The fans however.

Fans in Arizona are just awful, for any sport.

When Iowa State came to play at UA, they started multiple fights in the sands (UA fans). When Kellen Clemmens of the Oregon Ducks broke his leg against UA a few years back, fans were throwing BEER BOTTLES at him as he was carted off the field. I’ve seen cheerleaders hit with full bottles of water (apparently throwing garbage is a theme for the white trash).

So, regarding the fans, I agree.

    [Reply]

    Jon G Reply:

@3Bcrown, I’ve honestly thought of the same thing. At the very least he needs to record “The Kings have won the Stanley Cup!” even if it’s in a phone booth somewhere.

The Stanley Cup DVD won’t be the same without it.

    [Reply]

    Cynic Reply:

    @Subby, I’ve said this a bunch…

With technology today, this is SO EASY to fix. SO many ways to allow Bob & Jim to do a simultaneous broadcast on a different feed. With HD, there is more than one satellite feed for the games IF they want to transmit them. Just allow people to watch the game on a sub channel like 603-1 or 603-2 for Directv. You could also use the old SAP broadcast Audio feed which usually allows a simultaneous broadcast in Spanish. Use that alternative audio feed for Bob & Jim.

If need be, make it a local thing. Only the LA market can get the feed, which could be streamed over the internet if need be.

SO many ways to do this without hurting NBC’s or the NHL’s revenue or Nielsen ratings….Ridiculous that it’s not being done already.

    [Reply]

    Kman Reply:

    @Cynic,

You are so right C. Such a missing piece in this historical run. This is well-blogged by now but there is NO reason this should not happen. Add to the technology – the fact that there is now A WEEK before SCF puck drop.

Brownie took a lot – I mean a LOT – of borderline hits tonight from the Yotes and each time he jumped back up and put his head down and went back to work banging bodies. The ‘controversial’ hit he made wasnt even close to a penalty and not nearly as bad as some of the elbows and late crunches he got earlier. He was a warrior and I think, as good as he’s played earlier in the playoffs, this was his most Captainish game (to coin a word). He lead with his heart.

@toemas_sandstrom, It is sweet isn’t it. I was 8 when my dad took me to games during the Kings first season back in ’67. How many a night we cheered and sighed and how many times we said we’ll get ‘em next season. He, too, is gone but would no doubt be ecstatic tonight.

We were both in awe back in ’93, but heartbroken as we saw it all crumble. This Cup run is different. With all respect and thanks to “ol 99″ this one comes without the same expectations and celebrity hype. Yes, we should have played better and should have seeded higher during the regular season, but we didn’t, at least until Coach Sutter took over. Even then, it wasn’t over night success by any means and we had to struggle for our lowly 8th position. I reeled with our team back when we were on the short end of one goal games many a night and barely able to put the puck in the net. I began to see things start to gel under Coach Sutter; and now I’m seeing the Kings play some of their best hockey ever on the verge of winning it all.

I remain still cautiously optimistic and as realistic as Coach Sutter is. But I believe if we remain focused and continue to work hard, actually harder than we even have so far, we can win Lord Stanley’s Cup. What a day that will be, for you and me and so many, many other life-long Kings fans!

The NHL Network anchors keep insisting forcefully that Brownies hit was knee on knee. Somehow I feel like they are trying to influence Shananigans. Brownie better not be punished by the league.

@KingsFanatic08, What is it with everyone. And other than our team and fans, who are showing class I do mean EVERYONE. Brown was trying to take his man out of the play. Hey all you morons, we call that a LEGAL CHECK. Yet Smith’s slash had NO INTENT BUT TO INJURE and this is OK?

I can’t believe I am reading some negative comments on this site about DD? What games are you guys watching? He has been the best defenseman on any team in the playoffs and he had a Norris Trophy performance tonight-goal, assist and the defensive play of the game breaking up a 2 on 1….yeah, I know he’s 22 and rich….but he is AWESOME…..stop being jealous haters….

  48. TiredOfIt says:

OK..We won’t be able to, but lets try to put this Brown/Rosival to bed. 100mph going at each other and there is full body contact. He’s down and all PHO players are pissed….They lose concentration and the game. Doan is pissed because in 16 years he’s never won anything. We get it Shane, BUT…..Your team has a bunch of poor losers on it. Your teammates called out the refs saying they wore the same colors as the Kings but they didn’t know they had to play for them? You guys had more bad calls go your way than we did. Were you guys watching this series at all? Anyway…nighty night now. Please go and pick up all of the bottles that your classless fans threw at our players after the glorious win

Awesome game! Excited to see the Kings back in the finals again. I’m just really disappointed in Phoenix fans and players. Just poor sportsmanship. The entire series had plenty of missed calls both ways; offsides calls, clear penalties and for mike smith, Doan to reach like that and feel the refs were out to get them the lost…Ridiculous! Win like a champ and lose like a champ. The better team won.

I just saw the replay of Brownies hit in slow motion on my dvr and the offside whistle blew just a second before the hit so there was no way Brownie could have stopped before the collision. Second contact was made first with the left shoulder, then it was thigh to thigh, or brownies knee to his thigh with the follow through, making it a full body check. There was NEVER knee on knee contact. The NHL Network anchors desperately want him disciplined and I wonder why. I smell kneegate.

  56. ToughD says:

That overtime hit was right at the whistle. This was Brownie so we know it was clean. Good payback for Rozsival’s earlier attempt at embellishment involving Penner after the whistle.

    [Reply]

    steveo Reply:

@ToughD, Clean hit, embellishing? maybe not on this one. These guys know you need to play heads up in the middle, checks are going to be finished and if your the one with the puck coming in like that your going to pay. Clean play by Brown with a BIG HIT on ROSIE (who should have been given 2 for dropping after that love tap from Greener). Good job to get your team JACKED BROWNIE

  59. Like Wall says:

    The hit:

First off, it was a fairly sloppy intrance across the blueline. Rozsival tried to stickhandle at the blueline – which is usually a no-no – and put two teammates way offsides. Also, Rozsival’s head’s down. Brown is wheeling around heading towards the traffic – even before the whistle is blow. Brown doesn’t lead the NHL in hits for nothing. This is how he sees the game and plays the game. He’s going in to disrupt the play. Brown’s knee may have fractionally made first contact – as evidenced by his own leg swinging backwards after the hit. But clearly The majority of the force was distributed along Rozsival’s entire mide-section and upper body – just look at the way his body flys after the hit. Also, Rozsival’s left leg(knee) did NOT go flying backward – suggesting his leg took the brunt.

The refs could have called a penalty in the play. Or not. There were all kinds of iffy-calls and iffy-non-call during that game – on both teams. No need to go down that list. But what was clear – and not being mentioned much – id that the Kings were ALL OVER the Coyotes in overtime. That was as dominate a stretch of time you ‘ll ever see in an overtime period. Now, it would have been typical for Phoenix to eek out a “coyote ugly” win in overtime, but they didn’t earn it. They didn’t work hard enough to even create a “Coyote ugly” opportunity. The Kings were working them, and their own hard work payed off in the end – without the benefit of Brown’s hit – it had nothing to do with what was going on in the overtime.
