Thursday skate update

Colin Fraser is expected back in town this afternoon, Darryl Sutter said, but Fraser won’t play and Kyle Clifford will stay in the lineup.

There was muted reaction to Martin Hanzal’s one-game suspension, as Sutter only said, “That’s what the league valued it as. We’re thankful Brownie didn’t get hurt.” Dustin Brown said the hit from Hanzal hurt more than Mike Smith’s slash. Asked how surprised he was to take that slash in the back of the leg, Brown said, “Um, quite surprised.” More notes and quotes to come…

    i hate shannanhan’s stance on taking injury into consideration for the length of a suspension. the action is what the action is. brown was lucky he didn’t brake his neck. why does a suspensions length depend on the toughness of another person?

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @3Bcrown, Well it’s not the be-all-and-end-all or even the primary consideration, so it’s not unfair to include it as a clause in determining the length of any suspension.

    [Reply]

    stagger Reply:

    @3Bcrown,

    I agree. The resulting injury should not factor into the length and severity of the punishment. It was a vicious hit that IMHO deserved closer to five games.

    The league is not sending the correct message with how they handled this situation. When taking into account the Torres hit on Hossa and comparing that with all that happened in game two, it’s obvious that this is part of the culture of this team. The league should have heavily fined the team as a whole as well as suspended and/or fined Smith and Morris.

    Many people here, including myself, thought that Dave Tippett would have been a great coach for The Kings. I don’t think that anymore. He and his team are a bunch of punks and I would hate it if he was associated with The Kings.

    We will see more cheap shots taken at our players tonight. Hopefully they will be ready for them.

    @Steve,

    Agreed with the wives. I don’t know how my dad and uncles do it. However, I noticed hockey players often marry their high school sweet hearts or other low profile women. I always wondered why they don’t go for the models and celebs. Maybe these women are hockey wives and get it. They understand the life of a hockey pro and they know when to pick up the slack (or at least when to put down the whip). Penner’s wife is not a hockey wife. Leave a man, when hes down on his luck. I hope she’s watching when he hoists the Cup (again).

    @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,

    Obviously, tons of big stars (of any kind) will marry the prom queen. I guess I just remember seeing a lot of shocking counter-examples. For example Dustin Brown and Kopitar’s girlfriend. I’m always surprised to hear that a young star is married with children. I thought it might have something to do with the hockey culture. Sutter-style straight shooting, effort over glitz, no concern over image (all the missing teeth), etc. But as I just went through the current roster, I see that the typical blond bombshell beauty contest winner is the more common scenario. I don’t criticize them for that. They totally deserve it. But it doesn’t ruin this image I have of hockey players being different from run of the mill sports star.

    To be honest, as a guy that played hockey for 31 years, I am much more offended at what Derek Morris did. Morris stuck his knee out and tried to cripple Scuderi. To me, that is as bad as when an offensive linemen in football uses a chop block. Shannahan played during the 90′s when cheating, and hurting was the accepted norm in hockey. When Shannahan saw that, he knew god damn well what Morris’s intention was !

    Hey Shannahan! Wake the hell up ! Stop being so soft on suspensions before someone gets really hurt or killed !

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

    @puck73, yeah, I talked a little bit about it in an earlier thread… that was a total career-ender. I think Shanny has a soft spot in his heart for that play, he’s done it once or a hundred times in his day.

    I agree. I still cringe when player skate by each other in opposite directions — That’s from all those 70s-80s hockey games where one of them would stick out a knee causing the other guy a hyperextension injury — Morris’ play was a throwback to a much dirtier era. But, then again so was Smith’s — but I bet Hextall saw a bit of himself in that one.

    Then how about this from former Coyote Keith Tkachuk:

    On the Kings: “They’re big. They’re physical. They’re mean, and they’re getting it done. I don’t know what the Coyotes can do”

    Still a dart?

    I get a kick over the media at this time of the year.
    The Kings weren’t even an after-thought when it came to the national sports media and even hockey writers.
    Now all of a sudden we’re the darlings of the NHL. They all want these feature stories on Quick, Brown, etc.
    Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to read about your players and see the praise that they get, but it still cracks me up that you never read in these articles how this is the 1st time any of these guys have ever watched a Kings game since Gretzky left.
    Especially Quick. The guy’s been amazing all year long, but only now gets any kind of recognition. If it weren’t for the GM’s picking Vezina candidates, does anyone believe JQ weould have even gotten a vote?

    @nykingfan, You have to be Philly or NY to get any attention outside the finals. I remember one Stanley Cup Final when the announcers talked about Eric Lindros during three minutes of actual hockey play (instead of calling the game), which would have been fine except Philly (his team at the time) wasn’t playing.

    It’s finally dawning on people that the Kings aren’t where they are because of all the lucky bounces. Remember during the St. Louis series how many “lucky bounces” the Kings got. We lucky bounced St. Louis from the playoffs in a sweep, I guess.

    I welcome the bandwagoneers with a somewhat holier-than-thou smugness of a guy who has been there during all the suffering.

    Thought of the day #1: last year LA lost Kopitar to a freak injury at the end of the season, yet still managed to come 1 OT goal away from forcing a game 7 vs SJ…a healthy Kopitar and LA has a great chance of making the second round….which begs the question: Would DL have traded for Mike Richards if his team had advanced passed the opening round in 2011?

    Thought of the day #2: WIN GAME 3!!!

    Thanks for all the great content on your site.

    I watched the coaches corner segment with Don Cherry, and his co-host is just killing me. Cherry is praising the Kings and the other guy starts in with “everything going the Kings way…” First, no Daniel Sedin, then no Halak, and then Barry Trotz “makes his decision” and the Kings don’t have to face Nashville. Unbelievable… no respect for how well the Kings are playing.

    As well, he implied that Brown turned into the check from Hanzal (similar to what is being said about the Doan hit on Lewis) and that Hanzal probably shouldn’t be suspended if Doan isn’t going to be suspended… Really?
