Wednesday practice update

The only players on the ice for the Kings this morning were Kyle Clifford, Davis Drewiske, Andrei Loktionov, Jordan Nolan, Kevin Westgarth, Jonathan Bernier and Martin Jones.

Colin Fraser is in Alberta with his family, Darryl Sutter said, so it would seem unlikely that Fraser will play tomorrow, but that is not certain.

Sutter indicated that none of the Kings suffered any injuries last night that would prevent them from playing in Game 3.

We’re still awaiting word as to a possible suspension for Phoenix’s Martin Hanzal. On his Twitter account, Brendan Shanahan announced that neither Shane Doan nor Derek Morris would face supplemental discipline. Shanahan said, in regard to Doan, “(Trevor) Lewis turns just prior to the hit.” Shanahan said the on-ice kneeing call on Morris was correct but that it didn’t rise to the level of supplemental discipline.

    Harty Reply:

@Stuart, don’t know about that, Kyle brings an element that Fraser cannot and Richardson certainly cannot, likely if Fraser comes back in time (hope all is okay with his family) Richardson sits and Clifford goes in with Nolan and Fraz.

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

@KingsFan79, I understand that it’s happened before, but I really don’t see how Shanahan can let that one go. That wasn’t the usual goalie whack you see from time to time. That was what they used to call a “stick swinging incident” and since the Teddy Greene days no one has wanted to see that in hockey. Shanahan’s job requires a lot of balls and he has none. Loved him as a player, but he’s really not cut out to do what he’s doing now.

I don’t like some of the shady plays Doan has made against our Kings team the last few games, but the hit on Lewis does not deserve supplemental action. Lewis put Doan in that position and I think the major penalty was enough (and the goal). The Hanjob hit and Smithers axe job to our Captain is another story all together. Intent to injure should not be tolerated and both of those ‘plays’ fall into the category. Poor officiating last night and decision by the league today.

If he called nothing I could excuse him for missing it, but he saw the play and knew he HAD to call the chop, and then CHOSE to make the even up call on Brown. Inexcusable IMO.

    Sebastian Reply:

@Cesar A, I believe you are wrong, in fact i completely disagree with you. if it was doan in Lewis’ spot and he turned and put himself in a dangerous position would you feel the same way? probably not.

since lewis went from facing doan to turning and facing the boards, the onus is on him not to put himself in that situation. Doan should have let up, he didnt, he got a 5 and the rest of the game, and thats all that he should get.

no the Hanzal hit was different. Drown skates into the corner and never changes his position, never turns prior or simultaneous with the hit, so the onus is on the hitter to let up, this WILL be a suspension and rightfully so.

    RobSD Reply:

The fines are a joke. A $2500 dollar fine to these guys is like a $25 dollar parking ticket. Means nothing. I would rather have the rest of the hockey world actually mention it and talk about how cheap it was and how classless Smith and the Yotes are. There is almost no mention of it in any articles. Out of the 4 nasty penalties I was most livid about the slash. I was worried about Brownie on the boarding, but I don’t think it was as malicious as the slash.

@Sebastian, I agree. No suspension for Doan.

Hanzal should get a game. That is exactly the type of hit the NHL is supposedly trying to stop. The puck wasn’t right there. And the team had just done several dirty acts out of apparent frustration.

I think Smith should get a game. Shanahan didn’t even mention him so it would seem that Smith isn’t even on the radar. I didn’t think he would get one since there is no precedent for it. However, I do think the NHL needs to review those acts. It was egregious for several reasons:
    1) Phoenix was losing.
    2) Smith had just taken a puck off his head because Brown was screening him.
    3) The puck was nowhere near the act.
    4) The act was deliberate with intent to injure.
    5) The swing was made with great force.
    6) Smith aimed an a vulnerable and unprotected part of the body.

And as a side note, I think the officials owe Brown an apology. Thay would be classy.

@Cesar A, I mean I’m a huge Kings fan, but that was just a series of unfortunate events. Lewis DID turn at the last second. On slow-mo, it looks like Doan has all the time in the world, and Lewis DID make the right play by turning around and protecting the puck, but he did it too late for Doan to react. Yes he deserved the 5 min + ejection cause it was boarding + blood, but a suspension for a hit that was hard to avoid given the circumstances? Please. Hanzel on the other hand…

I don’t believe Shanahan’s decision not to give Doan any supplemental discipline shows any bias. It just shows inconsistency on how players are treated. If the players don’t know what they will be punished for they will get away with whatever they can. Doan could’ve stopped once Lewis turned his back. Hanzal’s hit was dirty, no excuses on that one. Smith well I think everyone has commented on that here. Don’t worry we only have to play them 2 more times.

    [Reply]

    XodusMatthew Reply:

@Hockey Jesus, I disagree. At full speed (not slowed down) Doan did not have time to change his path. While the on-ice call was correct, i agree that Lewis turned, just prior to the hit, and therefore made/placed himself in a vulnerable position.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@XodusMatthew, Lewis has to worry about protecting the puck, not an impending hit. Take a hit to make the play is what they always say! His play was to pull the puck in to him and shield the puck with his body!

if Lewis doesn’t turn Doan probably still gets a charging call. If Doan was playing the game the way the league (Shanny) professess they want it played, Doan would’ve skated in hard and pinned Lewis, not tried to run him through the glass into row 3.

He didn’t need to change his path, he needed to change his MIND.

He’s shooting his own team in the foot. Earlier, he took himself out of position to try and lay the body on MR and what happened? the puck squirted out of there and to Penner to Carter to the back of the twine!! He’s looking to play to intimidate rather than playing to win.

Thank you Mr. Doan. You’re an idiot and now your team is going to be eliminated!

Im perfectly fine with Doan recieving the penalty that he gor. I thimk someone needs to tell lewy to stop doong.that or he is going to get seriously injured. @nykingfan,

Quickie sometimes retaliates when he gets bumped. But it’s a sign of warning. The goaltender has the right to protect himself but what Smith did was an assault on the other player, intended to injure Brownie. Of course, chopping head off is just a joke. But I believe the goalie can hurt the player with his big heavy stick if he wants to, and that kind of intention must be punished accordingly.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @goldielocks,
Swinging at a player’s anles or at his knees is pretty much the same thing. Quick doesn’t give love taps when he swings at guys who come in his crease. He swings with enough force to cause an injury.
    A warning would be a shove..not a swing of a goalie stick

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@nykingfan, Any intent to injure is worthy of a suspension or at the very least a fine my friend. You’re wrong here if you think Smith had any other intent in that moment but to injure Brown.

I’ve played for over 25 years. I know EXACTLY what happens in front of that net. However, any obvious intent to injure (and this was) must be met with a strict penalty from the head office, not a slap on the wrist, which is what he got.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @mrbrett7,
Anytime a goalie swings his stick at an opponent, it’s an intent to injure.
The size and weight of that stick makes it a weapon.
He could have injured Brown and if that was the case, then a suspension should be in order, but in this instance there was no serious injury and the refs did call a penalty on him (and a comedic diving penalty on Brown).
I understand the point of do we wait for injury before suspending people? In this case yes.
We’ve all seen goalies swing sticks at players ankles. With the size of the stick, breaking an ankle isn’t too much of a stretch. Do you suspend goalies because they could have broken a guys ankle? You’d have a suspension a night going on.
I’d rather save the suspensions for serious injury or swinging at a guys head.

It’s juut my opinion..doesn’t make any of us right or wrong.

    nykingfan Reply:

    @mrbrett7,
I would agree with you about the fine, but isn’t the max fine $2,500 in the playoffs?
that’s tip $$ to these guys so that’s not going to be a deterrent.

    rogiesbackup Reply:

@mrbrett7, A suspension a night??? Give me a break!! Takes a couple suspension for goalies IF they’re smart to stop doing it! Just because it continues to happen does NOT make it right!!!

We ALL obviously agree it’s a wrong way to react to situation therefore, simple make a stop to it don’t over analyse it! Shanny needs to come down hard on this one for the future.

    Steven H Brown Reply:

@nykingfan, the uproar is about the viciousness of the swing on the Slash to Brown. Yes I know that Billy smith & Ron Hextall, used to swing wooden sticks at the backs of the legs of skaters in front of their nets, neither of them was the size of Mike Smith. Brown is lucky to be walking without assistance today, and might be making an appointment for knee surgery today if things had worked out poorly, for Dustin.

And I have to go on the record again, brown has my fav since the first time I saw him play and hitting guys bigger than him

  27. aKinginVancouver says:

I’m just glad that Brown is okay after the Hanzel hit. That gave me flashbacks to last year with Kopi!

But let’s talk about this run. I have been watching the games through ESPN America and during the commercial times they recap historical moments (the good and the bad) in professional sports. They showed a lot of LA memories with the Lakers and the Dodgers back in the day, but what I realized is that we are in the middle of one of those moments right now.

Regardless of what happens, we are witnessing sports history. I just hope (and I really believe it is going to happen) we get on the good side of history. It’s making me miss home, but I might just have to make an early trip to catch a game seeing as my last home playoff game was last year at the game that shall not be mentioned.

I’m just grateful that the Kings are finally the team that is most feared. The only other time another team in these playoffs has played like us was NJ vs PHI. That’s it, Only one team (and only for one series) has done what we have done to the three top teams in the NHL/these playoffs.

    Go Kings Go!!!!

I was in PHX for games 1&2. I have to share with everyone here who wasn’t there that the Coyote fan base (if you can even call it that) is one the worst, if not the worst I have ever seen in any sport. They aren’t smart hockey people, they complained and whined throughout both games, and even booed their WCF team during a late PP. On top of this, I got yelled at by an older dude because I mentioned (too loudly I guess) to my GF that I couldn’t wait to get out of his gawd awful heat!! Too funny, but pretty sad also.

Anyway, I guess my point is this, yes there were some dirty plays by PHX and yes the refs missed some things, and yes it appears the league won’t do what they

Bett – Oh goody, a new sponsor! With all of those nasty hits to the backs of the players, we should have a backpain pill sponsor like Doans. A raise to everyone in the marketing and sales department!

Shan – No sir, Doan, the player, the idiot who runs people on national TV.

Bett – Oh, that Doan. Isn’t he the one who cried yesterday? Yes, leave him be, we need to show our emotional side.

Shan – You know sir, the Kings are rolling through everyone and they have a shot at winning the Cup.

Bett – No!! (gasp) the horror! Theeee Cup! In LA? Where it never snows? How can this be?

Shan – Well, you haven’t been paying attention. You have been golfing an going to movies.

Bett – Who is the best player on the Kings right now?

    Shan – Brown and Quick

Bett – Let’s see, that crazy goalie Smith is on the Phoenix team. Have him take Borwn out with a slash.

Shan – been there, done that. Brown is tougher than Smith.

Bett – How about that Hanzal guy? He is somehwat of a loose cannon. Have him take Brown out.

Shan – Been there, done that too. Now I have to suspend him. Brown was just too tough.

Bett – Well, there is only one thing left to do.
