SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick vs. Smith.
Kings 2, Coyotes 0: After a series of Coyotes turnovers, the Kings took a two-goal lead 4:47 into the period. Mike Richards chased down the puck in the corner of the Phoenix zone and pushed it toward the net, to Dustin Penner. Penner didn’t really have a good look at the net, so he pushed the puck to Jeff Carter, who one-timed a shot past Smith.
Kings 3, Coyotes 0: After a wild sequence of penalties, in which Phoenix’s Shane Doan was given a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct, the Kings scored a power-play goal to take a three-goal lead. Anze Kopitar controlled the puck in the right circle and fired a shot. Carter got credit for the goal, after the shot deflected off of him. Kopitar and Justin Wiliams picked up assists.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Coyotes 17-8. The Kings went 1-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. The Kings will be on the power play for the first 1:29 of the third period.
