Sunday start for Kings-Coyotes?

The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals are headed to a Game 7 on Saturday in their second-round series, making it almost certain that the Kings and Phoenix Coyotes will start the Western Conference Finals on Sunday. In fact, NBC Sports Network had an on-air graphic that noted a 5 p.m. Pacific start time. (It’s still baffling that the NHL, one of the four major North American sports leagues, can’t effectively communicate dates and times for its playoff games.) There are no conflicts at Jobing.com Arena over the next week, so a Sunday-Tuesday start would be possible. The big factor will be when Staples Center is available for Games 3 and 4, in the likely event that both the Lakers and Clippers advance to the second round of the NBA playoffs.

@mcdangles, During the HBO 24/7 Winter Classic I started to think that Torts was a great guy, especially with the kid in the wheelchair. Then I started watching his interviews and saw another side of him. Simply put, he is human. He can be nice, he can be an ass, he can be hard, he can be honest, and he can be himself. I do not know many people that are not forward and honest with the media. It may not be smooth but it is edgy and I am quite sure the NHL is enjoying his media coverage. The especially like it when he says really bad things and they fine him and make money off of him. Just my thoughts.

    mcdangles Reply:

@Hockey “G”, hey, the guy was pissed. I would be pissed too if I knew my guys could have wrapped up that series last night and they didn’t. I, from just watching the highlights, saw that the Caps purely out skated, out hustled, played with more ambition to win the game. Period! Game 7 is going to be the big test for Torts Rangers. Hopefully he will light a fire under their a–es ;)

Book your stay now for the likely date ranges and then cancel the stays that you don’t need when they release the schedule and keep the reso that works with the NHL schedule dates. Almost all hotels allow you to cancel for no charge as long as you cancel 24 hours or more before the reso starts. Most hotels will tell you the cancellation policy on the final review screen before you finalize your reso. GKG

    Jeff_R Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, NBC has scheduled for 10am on the 19th NHL game and afterwards is The Preakness Horse race. If there is OT they will move the game to CNBC. They did the same this past Saturday with the Kentucky Derby afterwards.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Jeff_R, Maybe they’ll make the Eastern Conference team play that game. Makes it an afternoon game for them, which is nice.

    Jeff_R Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Only problem with that is when the Lakers game will be, as they have #1 priority for Sunday afternoon games.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Jeff_R, Hmm…if they’ve already decided there’s a game that day, and they get to tell the teams when they’ll play, we’re already doomed.

    Alex Reply:

@Jeff_R, something I could see them doing if Lakers get that priority is going back to back with the East series Sat and Sun and putting Game 3 on Friday and Game 4 on Monday nights for the West.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Alex, That would really suck for the Kings if they did that (Coyotes also) as they will have had over 7 days off before the series started and then to have days off during the series. I also doubt NBC would like to have 2 games in a row with Caps/Rangers and Devils.

    kings of SB Reply:

@kings of SB, I saw that. I don’t see that being a problem. They could push the start time back if they wanted to do so.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Alex, The only way the Sparks game would be affected if the Kings do play the Sunday 12pm afternoon game is if they go to multiple OT’s. Then they would push back the start time to the Sparks. Or maybe they move them to the Sports Arena :) .

    kings of SB Reply:

@Alex, Could be interesting due to the possibility of a lengthy playoff hockey OT, plus Staples needs 2.5 hours min to go from ice to hardwood. We shall see soon.

@Alex, No way its at Staples on the 20th, the Tour of California, an AEG owned event, has it’s final stage at LA Live on that same day. No easy way in or out of the area as several key roads will be closed.

    Maurice – Which is?

Gary – Scheduling the Conference Finals!

Maurice – But dad, shouldn’t the scheduling office be handling that?

Gary – They can’t. They’re busy with my personal schedule so I can see “The Dictator” again.

Maurice – But dad, I had a date with that hot 20-year-old from Manitoba.

    Gary – Really? define “hot.”

Maurice – Her dad lets her stay out until 9pm on weeknights.

Gary – You are right, that is hot. Ok, never mind, I will just let NBC decide the schedule so we don’t have to worry about it.

Maurice – But dad, won’t the teams and their fans be mad about the wait?

Gary – Think about it, the Kings fans have been waiting 47 years for a Cup, the Coyote’s have never won one either, neither have the Capitals, and since the Devils are bankrupt, they are just happy to be here. They’ll play when NBC tells them to play. Now what’s your new girl’s name?

Sort of off-topic, but not really since all of the posts above are about awesome fans making a play-off road trip to Phoenix. Here’s some love from Jeremy Roenick about us Kings fans:

“One last thing that people don’t understand is that the Kings have a great fan base. Staples Center is not a very cozy arena to play in because it’s so vast and so big, but the Kings pack it every single game. People in that area don’t get enough credit for the support they give the Kings. Before this year, the Kings hadn’t had too much playoff success, yet their fans continued to come back day in and day out. I don’t think there were any empty seats when I played there in 2005-06 and there haven’t been any in the last couple of years.”

“That great fan base is important now that the Kings are playing the way they are.”

    pr0cess Reply:

@vplaza, ya i have a friend i work with that went to see the Raiders last year and he got tickets from a scalper and was informed that is was legal :P Here is the letter of the law about it :)

Ticket scalping is legal in Arizona, although there are some restrictions on the activity. According to Arizona Revised Statutes §13-3718, ticket scalping is prohibited “within two hundred feet of an entry to the stadium, arena, theater or other place where an event is being held, or of the entry to a contiguous parking area.” This means that you will often see ticket scalpers for various events standing across the street from an event. Depending on a ticket scalper is risky for several reasons. First, you don’t know if there will be any scalpers at the event when you get there. Second, you don’t know if the tickets are legit or not. But if you can get past those first two issues, and you decide to find a scalper, make sure you bring a seating chart with you. And bring plenty of cash.

    pr0cess Reply:

@pr0cess, But that being said, just looking there are plenty of seats for the price your looking for still on Stubhub :)

    vplaza Reply:

    @pr0cess,

Saw that too. Still not too sure about the timing. A 5pm start means they finish around 8:30-9:00pm, maybe. Six hour drive home after that puts us at home around 3am on Monday.

A Saturday game would have been ideal and a noon start would have been slightly better.

Did someone say there was going to be a watch party at Toyota Center? That may be the thing to do instead.

    Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com) Reply:

Yep, that’s how long it would have taken us from Carlsbad to Jobing.com. If it was a Saturday game, I would really have tried to pull it off.

But the watch party sounds cool. Only an hour and a half from us, I believe.

Comcast NBC/NHL What’s the point of all the secrecy behind the scheduling of playoff games? do you hink no one will watch game 7 of NYR Washington caps, if they know when PHX, and LAK will play? are the markets so small, that you won’t be able to find hotel rooms, if the general public, knows the time and place of the games, more than 2 hours in advance? is the point to sbotage ratings, when they should be at their peak, because nobody knows when the games will be played? We have known the Western conference matchup for 2 and a half days now, and you still haven’t made an announcement of when and where we can see the games, that’s building the brand!

    Jeff Reply:

@Steven H Brown, They did annouce game 1 in Phoenix for 5:00pm Sunday night. It can’t be on regular NbC at 12 since they are showing Golf. So it is on Sunday at 5 on NBCSN.

@Jeff, Ive heard this said, But why no game on Sunday yet at NHL.com?

    [Reply]

    Jeff Reply:

@pr0cess, Because like between the first and second round they waited for the round to end before annoucing the schedule. They might annouce the first 2 games though before, but the whole schedule won’t be annouced until after the Caps/Rangers game 7 Saturday.

    pr0cess Reply:

@Jeff, Ya i know but all i need is someone other then nhl network to say yes we are going be starting on Sunday… Cause then i will get my tickets and see you all there…

Why not Doan? He is too tough and it wouldn’t have much of an impact other than getting Doan even more motivated.

The capacity is over 100. No worries about getting a seat. If it ever got that rocking, it would be one helluva party. Check out the pictures on the watch party page (http://kingsnewsdaily.com/watchparty/) and you will notice another smaller tv in the background. There are 2 more of those so there is more than enough room and enough chairs for any amount that show up.

  55. Scott77 says:

The NHL does a horrible job promoting the most exciting playoffs in sports this is why it has a bad tv contract and why people don’t watch because they don’t know what time, what day and what channel the games are on, step the heck up NHL.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Scott77, The days will be annouced after the round ends. That is the way it has always been done in the NHL. One of the reasons this is done is because of availabilty of buildings. Also the times are probably tba so that Nbc can pick the games to show, although with 4 teams left now that is probably mute as they will alternate days and probably not play on the same day.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Jeff_R, Except for Weekends when they can show one in the afternoon and the other at night and both Regular NBC and NBCSN show games.

    Scott77 Reply:

@Jeff_R, but if they are playing sunday and the last series will end on saturday how is that fair to the fans to give us only one day to prepare for a weekend viewing party and the game is for the fans, that is how the teams and league make money. All I am saying is that the NHL needs to be more fan friendly.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Scott77, Well NBC annouced it last night. I dont think they just pulled it out of a hat saying it multiple times. They have that time scheduled for the game. Nothing is going on at Jobing.com arena for a while so I dont see why that isnt correct. I believe all conference finals an finals are in prime time except for some weekend games.

  56. Michael J. says:

  57. nykingfan says:

in all fairness to the NHL and the tv scheduling…it’s certainly not optimal, but with multi-use arena’s, there’s no way you can schedule series to be played every other day. The NBA draws higher ratings (no idea why) and will always get “top billing” when it comes to scheduling teams and games. If the NHL was on espn, it would be the same or probably a lot worse because they would schedule NBA games and relegate NHL games to other platforms which may or may not be available to most.
I do applaud the NHL for not starting conference finals without finishing all of the semi-final series first. The NBA does it, or used to do it, and it was impossible to follow. You couldn’t tell who was playing in what round.

Since it was impossbile to figure whether the NYR series would end or go 7 , how could we expect the NHL to schedule the conference finals prior?

It still sucks not knowing, but I do understand why

    [Reply]

    Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com) Reply:

@nykingfan, But they know now and still nothing. They knew as soon as the Caps won game 6. One would think they would know the schedule as soon as that was cemented. Right? Also, what’s the sense on waiting for the Rangers and Caps? There’s no reason the West finals can’t be announced ahead of the East. Silliness I tell you!

    [Reply]

    pr0cess Reply:

@Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com), Ya this is what kills me… I mean people are in my boat need to make sure they have time for the games ect…

    [Reply]

    CL Reply:

@Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com), I thought the same thing, but this series will make a major impact on the West schedule as well, since it not only determines which arena’s schedule they have to work around (NY or WAS), but also determines whether NJ will have home-ice or not. So they have a whole different set of possible arena conflicts to deal with, depending on who wins Saturday. These affect the East’s schedule, which then affects the West’s schedule, since they certainly don’t want to have overlapping games…

They should at least be able to announce the first game or two today, I’d think, but any more than that might be too difficult before Saturday.

    [Reply]

    Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com) Reply:

@CL, Good point. I shouldn’t have underestimated the complexity of scheduling. I know someone who does it and it can be extremely complicated. But in this case, it’s only 4 teams so it seems far less so on the surface.

    Stuart Reply:

@CL, what else can really be going on in NJD’s arena?? :) I keed, I’m sure it’s a very happening place!

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com),
I agree with you that it should have been posted immediately after the caps won the game. They should have had contigency plans in place prior to the game in case the Rangers won or the Caps won.
I still don’t like playing the conference finals prior to all of the semi final series being completed.
One issue would be the wait time between series.
After the Kings sweep Phoenix :) they might be waiting around 2 weeks for the eastern conference series to be be completed.
Also, how do you promote a conference final and at the same time promote a conference semi final game 7?
One of the series will be getting shafted and it will probably be the beginning of the Western Conference final. I’m sure there would be a lot more interest in a game 7 than a game 1 to the fan with no vested interest in any of the remaining teams.

Hope everyone who takes the time to post here, some multiple times, have also taken the time to go to ipetitions.com and typed in “Los Angeles Kings, Hire Bob Miller and Jim Fox for NBC coverage of remaining playoffs.” No one else is going to do this but Kings fans. Bob Miller has meant as much to the franchise as any player. His love of and loyalty to the Kings is unparalleled. It would be terribly wrong if the Hall of Fame voice of the Kings (who calls em down the middle) is excluded from what may well turn out to be the team’s run to its first Stanley Cup championship. Please take the time to sign the on line petition. It takes no time and could make the difference for our friend. Thank you. GKG. P.S. I’ve been a Kings fan since 1972.

There’s no doubt that NBC’s broadcasting of the games is great for the sport of hockey in general, but it’s not so great because they are dictating dates and times, and the only times the sport is shown on the actual NBC network is on weekends, otherwise it’s relegated to the NBC cable dumping grounds NBCSN, CNBC or MSNBC.

Of course, the NHL and NHLPA (it’s also in the players interest) are complicit to this. They have to be if the intent is to get more exposure.

It’s a catch-22. Fans complain that hockey comes second or third or worse behind other sports and an attempt to elevate the sport manages to frustrate its existing fan base.

I’m not convinced that broadcasting games on the weekend during the playoffs adds that much to the existing fanbase. It would be interesting to see the numbers –if they exist — but breaking down that demographic might not be so easy; fans will tune in no matter what and yes, there will be spike in viewership, but if the spike doesn’t translate to longer term fans then the point is moot.

If the point is to increase the fanbase, perhaps the NHL needs to rethink its strategy. Could allowing the regular season networks such as FSW cover the playoffs, the NHL could then promote the sport with marketing and advertising blitzes on ALL networks as an event not to be missed be a better way to go?

This John Tortarella is an utter embarrassment to the NHL. This insecure, paranoid, control freak is the 2nd coming of Bobby Knight. I hope if the Rangers lose on Saturday that MSG will fire his ass so we dont have to see him talk down to people anymore.

This boorish A-hole reminds me of someone in my own family, so you can imagine this kind of behavior hits home very hard with me. I hope Mao Tse Tortarella melts down incredibly hard if his team gets eliminated so it will be easier MSG to can his ass, and send him off to anger management for a couple of years so he wont cause damage to any of his players or anyone in his immediate family.
