Darryl Sutter’s postgame thoughts…
(on his message to the team after the second period…)
SUTTER: “There were two or three things that we wanted to do better, in terms of… Really, each period is a game unto itself, right? So, if you can try and do some of the things you were doing at the start of each period, that’s what you try to do at the start of the third period.’’
(on whether he told the team to give its best 20 minutes…)
SUTTER: “They don’t each play 20 minutes. They each play a minute and a half to seven or eight minutes. It’s more of a shift-to-shift thing.’’
(on Jonathan Quick’s play…)
SUTTER: “I think you need great goaltending to win every game that you play in the playoffs.’’
(on how long the Kings should be satisfied…)
SUTTER: “Until we see what the schedule is and who we play. They should be satisfied, shouldn’t they?’’
(on Dustin Brown’s play in the playoffs thus far…)
SUTTER: “I think it was fitting that he scored the winner. I think we saw some pretty tough guys score goals tonight. I mean, Jordy [Jordan Nolan] didn’t play much. He scored a big goal and had a big fight. He was just as important in that win tonight as Dustin Brown was, that’s for sure.’’
(on the growth of the team…)
SUTTER: “It’s like I tell them, `Meet the challenge but enjoy the experience.’ Experience the experience. It’s the only way to do it. It’s a big part of getting better, or learning. It’s the best way.’’
Sage words from a man that’s been there, done that.
Congradualtions on a great series Coach. Now on the the next game.

@BigIslandKingsFan,
Darryl Sutter’s postgame thwarts,
(on his message to the team after the second period … )
SUTTER: “There were two or three things we needed to do better or those guys were gonna be sequestered on a real road trip this time, in terms of … Really each period is a game you play with yourself, right? It’s a fact. So if you try an’ do some of the things you were doin’ at the start of the last game at the start of the third period, that’s what you can do at the start of the second period next time. Simple math. And, it’s a fact. I’m full of those.”
(on whether he told the team, “Look yer playin’ like total horse pucky [raises a theoretical eyebrow at the subtlety of his own analogy] out there. Ya better friggin’ stop watchin’ the TVs an get yer friggin’ acts together or we’re goin’ back t’ Feebleville, MO …. )
SUTTER: “They don’t each play twenty minutes, which is just as friggin’ well or I’d be through the roof with some of ‘em. Drew’s one. I’ve got kids who act older than him … because they are, basically.”
(on Jonathan Quick’s obvious gambit to get a smidge of avuncular affection from a very stern and distant paternal figure … )
SUTTER: “I think if he doesn’t get better and stop lettin’ in some of those angle goals from his left side he’s gonna end up where the other guy [Jonathan Bernier, probably] is right now. You’ve only won eight games an’ you want t’ think the job’s done, you better not. Cos it aint half done. That’s a fact. Even if it isn’t, I’ve got tax accountants for all that. And it’s all I got to say about that, to be honest with ya’. Anybody seen Cory an’ Kipper [Cory and Kipper] lately?”
(on how long the team should have just one beer and a piece of cake in safety until they get it rammed down their throats that their young kids and not a professional hockey outfit … )
SUTTER: [astonishingly breaking code] “Let them have a bit of fun till the next round gets announced. I got sick of all of this intensity stuff when I was sittin’ in my pajamas over there tryin’ not to watch TV in the hotel. It’s pretty tough. I’m not used t’ more than a few channels on ranchin’ an’ building cattle sheds an’ [stuff] Some of those cartoons the boys watch are teachin’ em bad [stuff]. Anyhow, it’ll catch up on ‘em the first practice back. I’ve learned a lot of new words over the years they aint even heard of yet.”
(on Dustin Brown being the best thing since salted peanuts – unless you’ve seen the price of salted peanuts lately! I mean are they dredging those things up from the Alberta oil sands at the cost they’ve gotten to or something … )
SUTTER: “I think that it was fitting he scored the winner. It was one of those tough grind-it-out games with not much room for skills and smart play an’ that’s what he’s good at. On the other hand you got Jordy [you know, Teddys boy - Nolan] who never plays any minutes but he’s got skills an’ he’s smart with the puck sometimes. [thinks hmmm, that's somethin' I might do a bit different next game] He had a big goal and a fight cos those darned kids snuck into Westy [the forgotten pugilist of Kings hockey]‘s room an’ ordered the Merryweather/ Clotto fight . They better not try to stick that on Tim [Lieweke]‘s account. He gets charged for that [stuff] out of his paypacket. So really, he’s just as important or more than Dustin [Brown, if you'd forgotten the original question] thought he was, that’s for sure.”
(on the growth of the team’s egoes to the breadth and depth of the Alberta oil sands and their self-perceived values to be approaching that of goshdarned salted peanuts these days !!! … )
SUTTER: “It’s like I always tell ‘em enjoy the challenge but meet the experience. Experience the experience. One of the brothers, might of been Duane, he brought Eclectic Ladylamp home one day. Old man threw it right out of the friggin’ barn – while he was holdin’ the thing! Those sort of experiences don’t always pay. It’s a fact. It’s a big part of learnin’ or gettin’ better. It’s the best way. You don’t wanna mess with the old man. He’s a black belt in swingin’ the big black belt. Some people say he’s a chip off me old block, if y’ can imagine that. Must’ve been some of that ‘voodoo chilli’ we used t’ eat, probably …… Right?”

@crashin’ da net, The deal has worked really well, Richards is back from his post concussion haze. D rotation, is now solid and room for Martinez & Voynov to grow. All the forwards are slotted correctly with Stoll not havig to play on the wing. They have won 8 of 9. And some of those were spectacular. It is not so much his point total, itKs what his ability to hold down his position, means everybody else is able to do what they do in harmony. Just as Penner has finally started to shine, Carter’s days in the sun will come.

I love these games that we win without dominating, as more likely we wont dominate the games from here on out (maybe some of them). No matter how hard you try, its tough to dominate for 60 minutes…As long as we dominate always in the defensive zone, I am happy!!
We got this game with an invisible Carter…we cycle our players pretty well…Penner was a bit more quiet (although he excelled at the beginning of the game)…Its like they will never know from which angle we will come at the opposition.
The way the 4th line regained control of the off zone towards the end was golden.

It’s like he expects so much from those top guys he doesn’t want to feed them all the compliments that so many other people have fed them their whole lives. Keeps them grounded. For those third and fourth liners he wants to build them up. I think this guy is brilliant.

@Kings Fan in MN, I think he wants them to become superstars, and that part of the way to help them is to tell them they’re not yet superstars.

@Kings Fan in MN, Yeah, I’ve kind of noticed that also. But you know what? what ever he’s doing is working and I have to agree with Kenneth, “You’re not superstars yet but, these 3rd and 4th line guys are giving all they’ve got. You better keep on your toes”.

I have been to hundreds of Kings games at the Forum and Staples Center and today in the 3rd period was the loudest I have ever heard a LA Kings crowd, EVER!!! I had Goose Bumps on my Goose Bumps.

If Phoenix wins we need to make some sort of plan to drive out there for a game or two.

To the entire Kings organization, Thank You so much for a memory that will last a lifetime. Being a Staples & experiencing this win is simply a great moment in our history. Enjoy this win & get ready for the Conference Finals. There is still some work to do!

I was going crazt at about the two minute remaining mark when the Kings forecheck kept the Blues bottled up in their own end and unable to get Elliot off rhe ice for the man advantage. That was a thing of beauty that seemed to lst forever. Incredible job.
