There were some great post-practice quips today from Dustin Penner, who talked about his mixed-martial-arts work during one of the post-whistle scrums during Game 2, and also praised St. Louis’ T.J. Oshie for the massive hit Oshie delivered. “It was a great hit,’’ Penner said. “I haven’t been hit that hard in a while. I can’t remember. It might have been Cincinnati in the (AHL) playoffs. It actually almost felt good, it was so pure.’’
Penner was also asked about his foray into the world of Twitter — @dustinpenner25 — and why he decided to expose himself to the social-media masses…
PENNER: “There’s a bunch of reasons. I don’t know. It’s just one of those things where, it’s peer pressure I guess. All of my friends were on it. They’re saying, `You’ve got to get on it.’ It’s a lot of responsibility, because now you’ve got people asking a lot of questions that you want to answer, but there’s only 24 hours in a day. Ten, I like to sleep, and six I like to lay around. I don’t want to spend another six on Twitter, but that’s what it warrants now, with all the messages that you get.’’
Nice job Penner keep doing what you’re doing, we need all you can give to this team.

He’s a keeper. Anybody who doesn’t appreciate a guy who can deliver a line such as this one — “It was a great hit, I haven’t been hit that hard in a while…It actually almost felt good, it was so pure” — should go tar themselves and roll around in duck feathers. That includes, of course, anybody out there who dissed him once he had donned the uniform of an LA King.

@RobBordson, from what I understand, it’s actually more natural to sleep 9-10 hours per night from a historical standpoint. Up until last century, houses and streets actually got dark at sunset, and candle light isn’t really sufficient to do much in the way of entertainment that would delay our sleep. Now there’s a faint glow in the sky reflecting all the city lights, and we keep our TVs, laptops, and phones with their bright lights firmly in front of our faces well after dark, which keeps us from getting tired and getting the sleep we need.
This isn’t just Penner being lazy. We can all be envious of professional athletes because a major part of their job involves getting enough sleep so their bodies can heal from the daily grind (sleep plays a major role in the healing process). When asked his favorite vacation spot Jon Quick responded: “my bed.” We should all be so lucky.

@Naturallawyer, Everything you mentioned is true, but I think the type of abuse NHL players take its probably not uncommon for them to sleep more then the rest of us. Sleep is muscle recovery time. As for the 6 hours of laying that shows his sense of humor he threw it out there knowing bloggers have called him lazy.
Penner just keep tearing it up in the playoffs that is when your most needed.

I honestly dont think Kompon is pulling the trigger anymore, I think Sutter controls everything. Sutter has done a great job in almost every area, but even he seems somewhat clueless when it comes to the powerplay.

@puck73, If you are talking about last game, he had them out there when the game was in hand and just wanted them to be on the ice. A lot of times the 4th line will be out at the end of the PP (or kill for that matter) if it doesn’t seem plausible to get a line change as soon as it’s over. You will see Greener out there for the end of PP as well along with Scuds or Mitchell for the same reason.

So I am glad he has now finally found what he was looking for and knew he had inside of him, love of good Hockey, and is supporting our team the best he can.

I dig why everyone is down on Penner. Some games he just doesn’t look like he wants to play hockey. It’s been a tough year for the guy on and off the ice. Maybe these playoffs is what the doctor ordered. Sometimes it takes awhile to adjust to your team mates and Penner does not come off as the “lets go hang out type of guy” I did see the guy once while I was at Staples during hockey fest. Dude was real laid back shook my hand and I wished him well. Maybe I am the reason he had such a bad season. What a dark cloud hanging over my head!!! I don’t think so!!! Our Kings are playing the best hockey in the league right now, ‘Yotes a close second. Things could not be better for me. The snow is gone, spring time in Utah is Awesome, and our Kings are winning playoff games. Really life is good!! Also As strange as it seems, I found a fellow Kings fan. I painted a ceiling for him and his wife. When he saw my Kings hat he told me he has been a fan for along time. He also showed me a old Kings t-shirt from the 80s, we may hook up and catch a game or two being that the fan support is small in this state. It’s growing with every playoff win. Many people give me the thumbs up when they drive pass my LA Kings window decal on my back windshield. Gotta Love It!!!!

Funny thing, looking back before the season, many thought that the Kings’ success hinged on Penner’s success. I, along with many, worried that if the Kings were going to rely on Penner stepping up, then it wasn’t good.
While he didn’t do much during the year to change those views, his turnaround these playoffs has been great. Now that he’s playing the way many hoped he could, the Kings are enjoying success. I’m not saying that he’s the only reason for the success, but I think his play has helped elevate the level of play from others on the team.
DB, Kopi, and JQ obviously have played big roles so far, but Penner’s play has certainly helped.

@KC23, I think you discuss goalies in their own right.
I’m sure he was just selecting from skaters.

@Duncanz,
Despite the 2 losses to San Joser that sent Kings fans into panick mode, The Kings were the hottest team heading into the playoffs towards the end of the season with a 72.2 winning percentage.
To me it only makes sense that they are the hottest team in the playoffs.

@Dominick (defrim65), I wouldn’t say I panicked but even Gorilla, the mutt, made a run for the hills rather than deal with me after that secong game!
He came back 3 days later with quite a lot of dander.

He would have received a lot of different kind of questions if he opened his account a year ago. Go Penn, I always think you are a good player.

Winning is the greatest motivator. Having been a Kings fan even before #20 was a rookie. It’s so Awesome to see how well the team is playing this year. They’re playing with a lot of confidence.
There’s no reason why we won’t be playing in the Stanley Cup Finals this year!! We’re due to raise the Cup & this is the year that we’re going to do it !! Let’s make it happen boys !! GKG.

I was one of the lucky winners of Pancakes with Penner, and yes, I actually went. I took my 9 year old son, and they seated us right next to Dustin for breakfast. I kept thinking how awkward he must have felt to have to do that charity event right after being a healthy scratch. It didn’t even phase him. Someone that morning even said something like “Having to do stuff like this must be a drag…” Penner answered him firmly and with some emotion – “No way, this is what it’s all about.” I gained a lot of respect for him, as I got to sit there and see his interaction with everyone that morning. He took the time to talk with and joke with my son, signed my son’s hat, and even gave my son the sharpie he used. He joked “Don’t say I never gave you anything!” My son didn’t stop smiling for about three days, and that sharpie is still clipped to the hat hanging in his room. We all have our opinions about Dustin Penner the hockey player, and his potential and his play this year…I for one, have a ton of respect for Dustin Penner the person. His sense of humor and kindness are second to none.

@PurpleBlacknGold, I remember you talking about the pancake breakfast. Seemed like a side of Penner that just made sense. Glad to see him doing well in these playoffs.

@PurpleBlacknGold, Thanks for sharing your story. Between living in the South Bay and through my job, I have met a lot of athletes from all the major sports. I can say without a doubt that hockey players are the friendliest and most accessible people out there. Now, As much as we love Penner’s game today he totally sucked during the regular season. I hope that during the playoffs he can raise his stock high enough to secure a big contract somewhere, but not here.

@PurpleBlacknGold,
We here in the SW NV chapter love the heck out of Penns, and he can bring his sharpies out here and draw all over our trailer walls anytime he wants!

OK, totally off topic. But have you seen the farmersonly.com dating site commercial on NBCSN? WTF?

I think I figured out Penner’s problem- he sleeps/lays around too much. He needs to get off his tuchas and move around!

@Jeff,
10 hours of sleep, 6 hours of lazing around, and 6 hours for twitter. That leaves 2 hoours for hockey. Plenty of time.
