The view from St. Louis

The St. Louis Blues were hungry for revenge. Upset with the Kings — and particularly Dwight King, whose hit took top defenseman Alex Pietrangelo out of the lineup for Game 2 — the Blues came out hitting. That’s understandable,. Problem is, at some points the Blues seemed more concerned about hitting the Kings than beating them. The Blues delivered a series of teeth-rattling hits, but the Kings didn’t wilt. Yes, the Blues sit a physical tone in the first period, but they also recorded only five shots on goal and allowed four goals. That’s not a formula for success. Count on that changing in Game 3. The Blues made their statement, and knocked the Kings around, but the Blues are more effective when they simply forecheck aggressively and fight for loose pucks. The Blues have to find some answers, particularly on the power play, and they can’t afford another period like the first period last night. Here’s how the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Belleville News-Democrat covered last night’s game, followed by some additional postgame quotes from the Blues…

St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Blues coverage

Belleville News-Democrat’s Blues coverage

COACH KEN HITCHCOCK

(on the game…) “In the playoffs, it’s one loss, so you move on. I think there are some obvious things that we have to address. Power play is costing us in a big way. We’re going to have to address that again. It’s hurting us. Shorthanded goals build a lot of momentum. We’ve had two shorthanded goals in the two games, taking away our momentum. Careless plays by us. And full marks to them. Their emotional investment in the first period was greater than ours. We started to play later, but you don’t know how much they’re sitting back, so it’s a hard read for them. And their goalie was good again. We pounded a lot of shots in the last two periods, but still, we only scored two goals. We’ve got to invest a lot more, early in the game. And like I said, that’s the nice part about playoffs. It’s one game, it’s one loss. Move on.”

(on the game…) “They’re full marks. They checked us hard. They checked us hard and we coughed up the puck. We made mistakes. To me, the first goal was a perfect example. The game is at a furious pace, and we’ve just got to get it deep, and we try to make an extra play. We’re trying to create something from nothing, and next thing you know, we’re picking it out of our net. That’s an attitude. We’re trying to force offense. The way we finished Game 1 is the same way we started Game 2. We’re trying to force offense when it’s not there. They’re pressing up, and we’ve just got to make them turn, like we did in the second and third period. When you try to force offense, you try to play east-west. Against this team, they check too well, and they just turned the puck right up on us, three times, and two were in the net.’’

(on the status of injured defenseman Alex Pietrangelo…) “He’s day-to-day. He’s tried it today, and he’s still sore. It’s a big hole. Not a lot different if they lost Doughty. Same thing. But I think, with the full two days off, hopefully he’s good to go. Unfortunately, he couldn’t play today, but we need him back in the lineup if we’re going to… Our job, right now, is to come back to our fans here. That’s our job. Win one of the next two games, to get it back here. We’ve played awful well on the road in the playoffs. Like I said, it’s only one loss. It doesn’t feel good right now. The first period doesn’t feel good. The way we played on the power play doesn’t feel good. We’ve got two days to regroup here and put our best foot forward. All you can do is ask for your best, and today was not our best. Today’s first period was not our best. We need to make amends for ourselves.’’

(on the status of injured goalie Jaroslav Halak…) “Jaro is out for the series. He won’t play in the series.’’

—–

T.J. OSHIE

(on the game…) “It was just a bad start. Guys weren’t ready to go, and they were. We knew they were going to be coming out firing, getting that first (win) under their belt and having a chance to win two and go back to their barn for the second two. They just came out firing, and we weren’t ready, physically and mentally. Most importantly, mentally. We need to be smarter. We need to work smarter.’’

(on the frustration with the poor start…) “It’s very frustrating, because we know our game plan. We know what we need to do when we are successful, and we didn’t do that here tonight. It should be a staple of our game, to get the puck deep and play good team defense, and that was nowhere to be found in the first period.’’

(on the Blues’ power play…) “We need to win the special-teams battle. Quick is a great goaltender, but you can score goals on him. We’ve seen people score goals on him. We have in the past. We’ve just got to get to him. He’s hot right now. We’ve got to get traffic, more shots, and hopefully we can squeak a couple ugly ones in.’’

—–

DAVID BACKES

(on the game…) “If we play like we did tonight, with not enough guys going, it’s going to be tough to win wherever we are. If we’re playing on the moon, we’re not going to win.’’

I think we should thank for the crappy Sharks’ PK cause the Blues thought their PP was great. They should hae realized that they were going to face the completely different level of PK unit.

@goldielocks, Off topic: I was just wondering if we were going to have to listen to “hazy” for the rest of this series or next? Count on NBC to make people listen to the opposite side of the truth, they do that regularly!!!

Why can’t we have anouncerst that are at least objective? Instead we have duck anouncers that would like nothing better than to see the Kings defeated. And are constantly making snide comments, like they do during the regular season, that are just biased toward duckville!

What is wrong with Jim Fox doing the color for Kings games?

You have no idea. After dealing with Jim Hughson for the Vancouver series (I am on the East Coast), these guys seemed like Vin Scully and Chick Hearn (before he went senile) . Although there was some questionable analysis they seemed to try to give the Kings credit without calling the game as over and convincing the viewers to change channels.

To really understand how bad the broadcast was last night, you have to hear the comments of a devot non-fan. My wife hates hockey – the only sport she literally cannot stand – and even she picked up on the disparity without any input from me. At one point she asked if there would be pro-Kings announcers when the series returns to Los Angeles.

All I could do is hang my head and hold back the rage.

The funny thing, though, is that there was a side benefit. She actually paid attention to the game and asked questions. There may be hope yet.

However, this makes them that much more dangerous. The Kings need to be ready for an all-out assault, and I suspect Sutter will have them ready. I am dearly hoping the Kings will respond the way they should and grind out a Kings victory (1-0 or 2-1) and show the Blues that they can play it however they want and they’ll still come up short.

I’ll happily take broadcasters hyping up the other team in every single game because it means the Kings are winning. As soon as the Kings are down 0-4 in a game, then you’ll hear all sorts of wonderful hype.

But yeah, it would be nice to hear better balance and I guess that’s the difference between local and national NHL coverage.

I had a far bigger problem with the video coverage. It was amateur hour on NBC. Cutting off in mid-sentence to go to commercial, terrible replays and analysis. Hell, some replays were totally skipped. Really bad broadcast all around.

To me, it really seems like Hitch has no idea of how to beat the Kings. The Blues absolutely dominated the first 10 min of Game 1, then the Kings took over after weathering the storm. His choice to switch his top two centers absolutely “Blue” up in his face. The Kings are too big, strong, and skilled for the young Blues.

St. Loius has to play an extremely controlled game to win on Thursday. I expect a 2-0 or 3-1 win for the Kings – with low scoring, tight checking, and few penalties.

    [Reply]

    PRMan Reply:

@Michael J., The problem is that we play his game better than them. We have bigger forwards to grind to the front of the net. We have better shutdown defensemen in Mitchell, Scuderi and the underrated Greene. And we have a better goalie.

They don’t have the talent to play an uptempo game (although the moron announcers somehow thought it would be in their favor last night).

Rich, I know it has been beaten to death but is there any noise about the biased telecast on the part of NBC. I don’t mind a neutral call, bur screaming “He Scores” for the Blues and kind of hinting that the Kings scored is really annoying for a fan of 20+ years who has been waiting for the Kings to make it past the 1st round. The conflict of interest of having the Kings cross town rival Brian Hayward on the telecast even makes it worse. From the coverage last night you would think the Blues played a good game and the Kings just got lucky 5 times!!!

I had to watch ESPN, the NHL Network and Kings Live to calm down.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned how bad the production was, let alone the broadcasting. I actually have a far bigger problem with that. They missed entire replays of critical action. They cut to commercial in mid sentence. It was really bad and not professional. Did anyone else catch the broadcast team totally miss that Blues penalty? It took them about 30 seconds to figure out the Kings were on the PP. Just bad coverage all around.

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com), I wonder if that was because it was on CNBC and not NBC Sports. I have noticed it more with the games on CNBC. Wonder if they have different crews for each channel they show the games on? The next 2 games will be on NBC Sports and NBC for those that can’t be at Staples, so it should be much better.

“The NHL is in a state of Malice in Wonderland, where logic and common sense are forbidden. A place where up is down and down is up. Dime-a-dozen predators are, for the most part, given free run to injure the skill players. The youngest, best and brightest of this league are prey for lunkheads, loons and low-rent hit men. @Lvhatrick, “The only 8th place team to ever make it to the finals were the 2005-06 Edmonton Oilers but they lost in 7 games to the Carolina Hurricanes.”

A little research turns up that the 05-06 Oilers beat the presidents trophy red wings, but a fantastic, only happened once phenomenon (all higher seeds in the west lost the first round), the oilers played the fifth place sharks in the second round. so no. it’s never happened. The Kings even making the finals looks like it would end up being pretty historic, and winning the cup even more so.

  28. Dump and Chase says:

“The Kings are the real sharks — circling the Blues, menacing and threatening, and aroused by the smell of blood in the water. The Blues couldn’t save Pietrangelo, but they’d better do everything in their power to save themselves.”

“The problem is two-fold. Even if the Blues respond to the predicament with the necessary emotion, it doesn’t mean they’ll be able to overcome the Kings. The Blues have to do something to immediately reverse the momentum. I wouldn’t give up on the Blues just yet, but the creeping reality is discouraging.”

This time it took 2 games to have the sports analysts give up on their team. Last series it took 3. Hopefully next series it will take 1.

I just don’t see how a team can come back from that awful of a game. The hope in the fact that the barrage ended in the second period, is really pathetic. Don’t they know that the Kings stopped playing offense once we were up 5-1?

The best evidence is that when Blues tries to mount a comeback on the 2nd period goal, the Kings answered immediately. To end all hope. It seemed like Kings played prevent-defense from that point forward, which is definitely the right move.

Saddest of all, the Blues couldn’t even muster up the strength to play well on the PP. Barely got anything on a 1.30 5-on-3!

    This team is cooked.

Every player on this team finishes checks, blocks shots, and pays the price to get into the hard areas of the ice. No. 8 seeds? Puh-lease. Talk about false advertising. These guys should have won the Pacific Division … The one-two punch at center of Anze Kopitar and (Mike) Richards is proving unrelenting in its offensive pressure, yet at the same time stellar for its defensive prowess. –St. Louis Today

WA WA WA amazing crying by the Blues media. To compare King with the likes of say Torres is insane. King never checked him at all. A cheap-shot dirty trick? He simply gave him a push and he dove like a master diver and in the process injured himself (which is insanely hilarious), but to include King in that mess is idiotic. And to call DS a grumpy coach? LOL. Give me a break. Can’t wait to hear all the excuses once we eliminate them.
