Kings skate update

Most of the players were on the ice for the morning skate. No lineup changes expected. There was talk afterward about the need for more (and higher-quality) shots on the power play.

Incidentally, the Kings did hear from Brendan Shanahan regarding Dwight King’s hit on Alex Pietrangelo, and they were told that the on-ice call — a two-minute boarding penalty — was correct. More notes and quotes to come…

    It wasn’t the correct call. Should have been 4 minutes with the cut, but that’s it. But the ref missed it. I’m just glad to hear that it look like AP may indeed play tonight.

    Agreed should have been a double minor for the blood. Not sure why the result was so bad, it didn’t look like an actual shove to me. I didn’t DVR the game so I couldn’t watch the replays in HD mutlitple times.

    DID King really shove/push or was it more inadvertant?

    NOW we agree! :-)

    LAPD line Reply:

    @Weasel, Double minor is not an option with boarding calls. Either a two minute minor or five minute major. The deciding factor between those two penalties isn’t whether or not there is blood, it’s the violence of the hit in the referees opinion. Read the NHL rules online. It actually explains things quite well, and being as unbiased as I can, I think the right call was made.

    [Reply]

    PRMan Reply:

    @LAPD line, Agree. It’s got to be clear intent to injure or pure recklessness to get the 5/game. Bitz’ hit on Clifford was pure recklessness.

    Dwight King was just going for the puck when Pietrangelo decided to interfere with him and cut him off using the net instead of playing the puck. King couldn’t stop his momentum that quickly.

    @Donald_S, I don’t believe there is a double minor for boarding… It’s either a 2 minute minor or a 5 minute major if I am not mistaken. The cut wasn’t the focus, and shouldn’t have been.

    @PurpleBlacknGold, I think you are right… the only time a double minor for an injury is applied, is for high sticking

    [Reply]

    bubbaganoush Reply:

    @Donald_S,
    I’m sorry , but why does blood from your chin strap make it an automatic 4 minute in everyones eyes ? A 5 minute major should be the only alternate call . That call should only be called if they think the severity of the check was there. In my eyes he gave him a good nudge, but didn’t drive him into the boards a follow him there. He needs to protect himself near the boards a bit and this wouldn’t even be a topic of conversation.

    [Reply]

    MIckey Keenan Reply:

    @bubbaganoush, The Blood rule only applies to high sticking infractions. The rule book states that boarding is a 2 minute penalty or a 5 minute major if the referee feels that severity or intent warrants it.

    [Reply]

    Donald_S Reply:

    @Donald_S,

    You guys are right. I check, it’s only stick infractions, (high stick, spearing) that have a double minor. So if it’s not a major, then it’s 2 minutes, even if the guy needs a transfusion. Interesting that there is no middle ground.

    Dougty, Martinez

    Penner should plunk his ass infront of Elliott and let Doughty, martinez and Carter tee off low shots so he can coolect the garbage.

  12. He Shoots, He Scores says:

    The Pietrangelo hit is by no means over. King will be a marked man in game 2. Crombeen gave him a chance to square off in the dying seconds of game 1 and King didn’t accept the invitation; based on what Nolan has said in the past, King can scrap pretty well, but I don’t imagine the Blues took too kindly to King not only dishing out the one-armed push on Pietrangelo, then backing down from a fight at the end of the game.

    The Kings had a somewhat similar thing happen early in the season when Bergenheim delivered the big hit to the head of Richards. Richards then chased him down to drop the gloves but Bergenheim wouldn’t go – he then elbowed Richards in the head to get away from Richard’s antagonizing. Moreau approached him later in the game and tried to get him to fight, still wouldn’t accept, which seemed to be the biggest complaint by Moreau after the game; it’s one thing to take a run at someone, but backing down afterwards made things even worse.

    I’d expect King to be involved in a scrap within the first 5 minutes of game 2.

    @He Shoots, He Scores, I thought it was Nichol who was asking him to dance… either way, I can’t see King taking that one, nor STL focusing on going after King rather than doing what they did out of the gate in game 1.
