Sunday practice update

The Kings are practicing at a suburban rink this morning, since Scottrade Center is being used by Van Halen today. Drew Doughty and Jonathan Quick got the day off today for maintenance.

The Kings aren’t expecting any supplemental discipline for Dwight King after last night’s hit on Alex Pietrangelo. As far as the Kings are concerned, no news from the league office is good news. More updates to come…

What does “for maintenance” mean? Are they getting their parts oiled?

@ThatGuy, To me, it was a careless/dangerous play moreso than a cheap/dirty play. But true, it’s all about personal bias. I’m sure if B.J. Crombeem shoved Kopitar into the boards like that us Kings fans would be screaming bloody murder (most of us, at least).

Bottom line, I hope Petro is ok and hope the Kings can win tomorrow night and beyond (LA Kings personal bias notwithstanding)…

@mash-ola, For the Kings sake why would you want Petro back, let him sit out it improves our chances.

Two more on the shelf would be awesome, Elliott and Oshie as well as Petro.
This is playoffs, not tennis, if you get hurt too bad, look at Cliffy. He was rocked by a cheap shot and not back yet, but again its the playoffs.

@Harty, As a fan of hockey, I want Petro out there to be testing our mettle. I’m not afraid of him, and I’m glad D. Sedin came back so we could show everybody we could beat them with him or without!
Of course, it would be great to have Cliffy available, also.

    PRMan Reply:

@mash-ola, From what I saw, King was going for the puck and Pietrangelo was trying to interfere with him by running him into the net. Hence he ended up at a really bad location to be hit and King couldn’t stop.

    I just didn’t see that.
It’s amazing how much bias we all have as sports fans. I just thought he pushed him from the side, and it didn’t merit a penalty. And if you get cut, you should stay on the ice until the officials see it. Not go to the bench and then notice it.

Fraser didn’t leave the ice until everyone saw the blood.

I’m with you. There was no “intent” that I saw, just two guys going for the puck and King unfortunately for St. Louis gave a shove from behind in a dangerous area. I thought the call was right and there shouldn’t be a call from Mr. Shanahan. If there is, it’s a dis-service since Henrietta Sedin MEANT to give Brown an elbow to the head and that got nothing.

    @@spencerlakings,
It’s really sour grapes. The Blues fans wouldn’t really be complaining if they scored on the PP and won the game. I’m not quite sure that a major would have really helped them out in the end since they PP was largely ineffective, and ultimately cost them the game by letting up a shortie. If Blues fams continue to bitch, we should just argue that even if it were a major, the Kings would have scored 2 SH goals. That’ll rile them up.

As for the hit, I didn’t think King had the evil intent, but nonetheless, it was stupid and probably under the new crackdown, could/should have been a major. Definitely don’t think suspension worthy, but maybe a fine to let the player know to back off those plays. At the same time, Peitrangelo really put himself in a bad position as he knew King was coming.

    Chrtistian T Reply:

@@spencerlakings, It was dirty but not cheap if that makes any sense. But it was only dirty because it was careless. I don’t think there was intent to injure. King just made a bad play and the Kings got a break. They also took advantage of the break.

@Doc Allen, Shorthanded goals are typically always scored the same way, turnovers in the wrong place. That’s just luck. So saying a PK coach should coach the PP is ridiculous. It’s the players that work the powerplay, and can’t score. Sure, the coaches tell them where to be, but in the end, the onus is on the guys on the ice to score on the powerplay, not the coach.

    @DanD,

With Kopitar, Richards, Carter, Brown, Williams, Stoll, Doughty, and (now) Voynov, on the powerplay, it’s fair to blame the coach. The weapons are there they just need some direction. Last game they seemed to move a bit more than usual and it looked better but theres no excuse for this.

    [Reply]

    DanD Reply:

@Dump and Chase, When players miss the net constantly, shoot the puck into the defenders, and turn it over regularly, is it still the coaches that are to blame?

    Duncanz Reply:

@DanD, This argument appears beyond contradiction to me.
As @Dump and Chase says, “there’s no excuse for this”. But, to turn it back around on him, I don’t give the players any free passes at all for lack of cohesion and multiple fundamental errors at this stage of a very, very long season not to have sorted all these things out among themselves by now!

    Save, Hrudey! Reply:

    @Dump and Chase,

Actually, it might be more of a chemistry problem.
Those are all great players, of course. But perhaps they just don’t “mesh” together when the PP comes.

Might be better to play normal “lines” on the PP than trying to put a super line together.

    Rick Reply:

@Dump and Chase, “Good” teams I’ve seen make little variation in their overall attack scheme when on the PP. If the 5 on 5 is sound, there is no need to do anything different on the PP. The Kings are relying too much on Quick and special teams to win these games, they need to work on their 5 on 5, get that rolling seamlessly and the PP goals will come…as will the Cup!

I hope Doughty gets to watch himself on some tape today. Guy drives me nuts. Plays so well 80% of the time, then makes risky, bone-headed plays. Guy needs to make the decision to not to try to do too much, especially on the PP. Just put the puck on net DD, forget the fancy crap. Please…

Even though Carter isn’t scoring like he should be (although he seems to becoming around, I guess his ankle is healing up) he drags away defenders from other players on the Kings. Just having him in the line-up is enough to force teams to switch their make-up so they can guard our top two lines, which on paper look as dangerous as any other teams top 6 forwards.

I hear that King needs to learn not to take “stupid” penalties such as the hit on Petro.
Can someone please explain to me just exactly did King do wrong?

From what I see, King shoved Petro with his left forearm, no crosscheck, from the goal line. Petro is off balance and falls awkwardly and gets injured.
    What’s the lesson?

    [Reply]

    Bringbackbutchgoring Reply:

@FdoFmFull, I’d say the Kings have played as smart of hockey as any team in the playoffs. We play our game (hard, physical defensive)every game and make the other team beat us at what we do best. I love how AM has gone from the bench every game when Sutter first got here to 1st team on PP ahead of VV, even. Shows you that AM is a very solid, intelligent player, imo

    [Reply]

    DanD Reply:

@FdoFmFull, It’s contact from behind, in a vulnerable position. It doesn’t matter if he was off balance, which helped the fall. King did hold up, but still made enough contact to drive pieterangelo into the boards. The ref is going to call that penalty every single time. He has to know better, and not put himself in the position for the ref to make that call.

    [Reply]

    vinny Reply:

@DanD, gotta disagree with that last sentence. the only thing he was doing was jumping in on a loose puck and got cut off at the last sencond, and to say he has to not put himself in that position is to say dont go for a 50/50 puck or dont go for a loose puck. petro put himself in the bad position, and king really did look like he was still looking to play the puck the whole time (slo mo you can see where he’s looking)

    [Reply]

    Save, Hrudey! Reply:

    @vinny,

Agree with you 100%. Looking at it slo-mo, you can see Petro isn’t moving his feet.
Either he was slow to react or was intentionally attempting to interfere with King’s progress of getting at the loose puck.

Still a penalty? I would still have to say yes. King needs to be aware of the vulnerable position another play is in when a few feet away from the boards. Tough to blame King though.

    DEH Reply:

@DanD, the shoulder was the contact point, hand touches the shoulder not the back, so it’s technically not a hit from behind though Petro was facing the boards. If the point of contact was the back it would’ve been a major.

that’s pretty interesting. 5-1 is super low, considering the Kings were like 18-1 preseason and went up to around a ridiculous 20-1 before Round 1 started. interesting to see gamblers suddenly try to hop on the bandwagon, when they could have gotten such fantastic odds before.

of course, Kings record is also 5 and 1… 11 more wins to go!! : )

funny about Nashville, but hey that means there’s pretty serious money riding on the Preds if the odds didn’t go up. if anything, the bettors have given then more respect (odds are adjusted based on the action for each team). the odds would have increased on NSH if people started dropping more money on all other teams i.e. Phoenix, Kings, To Win The Cup (TWTC). though I assume at this point, there aren’t going to be many swings based on 1 loss.

also, at the start of the Playoffs I forget the exact number but Phoenix was something absurd like 30-1, for your Pacific division champs (with only 16 teams in the running, no less). talk about a lack of respect, that’s it.

I wish the Kings PP was more like the way they play 5 on 5. A low rotation cycle game.
On the PP they play with it a lot up top and on the half wall but they rarely get below the goal line. I’d like to see more plays from the low corners with shorter passes rather than trying to get these long shots through that keep getting blocked. I’d love to see some bad angle shots taken which forces the goalie to commit to one side of the net with weak side guys crashing for the far post rebounds.

Our best players need to be our best players. Rick and jeff are lagging a bit. Williams can step it up. Also, I know we don’t have a top pp, but to go into a conservative defensive shell on 6 mins of pp is weak in my mind. Yes we don’t want to give up a shorty. Yes we had nice puck possession. And as hitch says you cant worry about defense when you’re trying to score a goal. With the pp handed to us, that is where you have killer instinct. That is where you break the will of the opposing team. That is where you make them fearful about putting you back on the pp. that is where you finish your opponent instead of giving them a chance on a lucky bounce.

King’s penalty should have clearly been a Major, and frankly, I think it also should have been a 1 game suspension. King did not intend to send Pietrangelo into the boards, but it was a careless move for him to use an arm to shove a player in a dangerous position, even though King was trying to get past him to the puck. That’s exactly the kind of dangerous play the NHL wants to take out of the game. Resulted in a concussion for Pietrangelo. I’m amazed there isn’t a hearing. We really lucked out as it doesn’t seem Cliffy is ready to come back and King’s big body is a huge asset in this series.

Bitz’s hit on Clifford warranted more than 2 games. That was a blatant, intentional board and vicious.

@Paddy, You believe King is better then Clifford? Really……..com’on, I still say he won’t be here next year.
Big, slow and sleepy. He doesn’t use the big body at all. Except from behind on Petro.

@Harty, No – Clifford is more valuable than King when healthy. But he isn’t healthy and with his 2nd concussion at 20 years old, I’d rather him sit as long as possible. We’re rolling right now with the lineup we’ve got. Our other options are Lokti (not a big body) or Westgarth (no thanks).

@Paddy, I’m comfortable either way. If he gets a suspension, I won’t cry about it.

Like you said, it was a careless play, but it was not a malicious play. In no way did King take a run at him the way Bitz did on Clifford. I do question the consistency of the officiating, where a high stick that draws blood on Fraser gets a double-minor, but a dangerous shove into the boards that also draws blood only gets two… I do hope Petro is ok, though.

But it’s a league issue and the players/fans/media has no say in the matter…

@mash-ola, The refs simply messed up by not seeing Pietrangelo bleeding. They made the right call on the board, but they missed the injury. He was on the ice for the next shift (so not apparently hurt), but he was bleeding and they missed that. If any of the 4 refs saw the blood, they wouldn’t have let him be on the ice at the start of the PP.

@Paddy, Maybe you should look again at the play. “I’m amazed there isn’t a hearing” your kidding right? maybe we should let girls play on the team too. This is the NHL and they are playing on ice.

Next we will be hearing people comparing him to Torres

They called for and wanted a physical game, they are lucky thats all they got.

Anybody wat to to take bets this guy will be playing tomorrow? Mark this post the he will be on the ice and if they want more , the LOS ANGELES KINGS ready for the punks.

Anybody think Sutter will tell them to let up? I Don’t think so

Missed call? Gee how many time does that happen to the KINGS?

Like I sai in tyhe begining of the game and I will continue to post before each game DESTROY THE BUMS.

NHL hockey is the fastest and the toughest sport on planet earth
Thats why I love it more than any other sport.

I am glad you are a kings fan (if you are) but I will always stand on the side of my team unless it is dirty.
