Quick named Vezina Trophy finalist

Jonathan Quick has been named as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, along with Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators. The Vezina is given “to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at his position,” and is voted upon by the NHL’s general managers. The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards on June 20 in Las Vegas.

Quick led the league with 10 shutouts, was second with a 1.95 goals-against average and was fifth with a .929 save percentage. Lundqvist had a 1.97 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage, while Rinne had a 2.39 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. No goalie has ever won a Vezina Trophy while playing for the Kings.

    Pumpernicholl Reply:

    @Maureen N., Luongo will be one of the best goaltenders in the NHL next season wherever he winds up playing. You can bank on it. That guy is too good and too competitive not to turn around and have a stellar season. He’s probably a goner, though, which is really Vancouver’s loss IMO. It’s hard to overcome a poisoned reputation whether it’s deserved or not. He really wasn’t bad at all in the first two games of the series.

    LA_1968 Reply:

    @loskingpride & @lakingbob(chi), Friday may be official but I would expect some news tonight or early tomorrow for two reasons. One big reason is that the Clippers could clinch home court tonight for their first round series with a win at NY. If they win, then Staples will probably be booked with Lakers & Clippers Sunday thru at Weds. If that happens it would be best for the Kings to play Sat, Mon (at SL), two days off and begin Thurs at Staples. I would look for a FRI start for Kings if Clippers don’t have home court so the Kings can get out of Staples sooner before the Clippers come back.

    [Reply]

    Paul M Hedberg Reply:

    @LA_1968, If Clippers also get homecourt they & the Lakers should each play 2 games 28th-30th.Kings/STL series is thus:27th@STL,29th@STL,May 1@LA,May 3@LA,*May 5@STL,*May7@LA,*May 9@STL.If Clips don’t get 4 seed somebody needs to play back-to-backs if necessary but let’s get going NBA.In 1st rd of NHL or NBA there should be back to backs anyway.Teams that know they’re gonna face each other don’t need to be sittin’around for more than 4 days max.

    Well, it looks like Lundqvist is falling (especially if he gets eliminated before the vote), and with the absence of Elliott and Smith on the list, Quick’s got a good shot. They’ll probably still give it to Lundqvist because “he’s earned it over the years” or some bullcrap like that.

I am sure the only thing people know about west coast teams (other than locals) is box scores and 30 sec clips on TSN, NHL network, and ESPN. The only time you get to see these guys in when they are on the road in the east and most of the time they are playing back-to-back so there is a chance you will see bernie and not Quicky that night. It just reminds me of the baseball’s NL MVP winner last year. We all know who should have won and we all know who did. Hopeful though.

I think back to the All Star Game when King Henrik choose Quick long before any goalies were expected to go. It’s pretty sweet to see Quick get that kind of honor and recognition from a peer.

    The east coast conspiracy is primarily about media attention and NHL leadership, not team GMs.

    Reporters do not stay up late to watch west coast games and we don’t need to see past the way calls and discipline has been dished out in the 1st round series between the Rangers vs Senators to cast a ginormous cloud of doubt on the integrity of the NHL. Shea Webber head board slam, anyone?

    With that said, I do believe the GMs will pull a Sergei Federov type collusion and slam dunk the Vezina on Quick to drive his negotiating value this summer as high as possible.

    Argument for Quick is he has had to play under pressure all season. Arguement for Lundqvist is he played against better offensive teams. Typically something this close will go to the veteran and especially if on the east coast. You never know though because it is just the GM’s that vote.

    [Reply]

  48. vplaza says:

    The fact that the votes were cast before the playoffs along with my feeling that, unfair as it may be, his one poor outing late in the season makes me think that Lundqvist gets it.

    I’m only basing that on my belief that Quick did not get as much attention from the GMs this year as Lundqvist did, and when Quick became really buzzworthy of the Vezina late in the year, he had a poor game that I thought it was possible that GMs would tune into to check him out.

    Again, I think it would have been grossly unfair to judge Quick’s entire season on that one bad game, but it came at a time when GMs’ eyes were on him and it was a big game to help determine where the Kings were going to finish.

    I hope I’m wrong because IMHO, he deserves the trophy.

    [Reply]

    Mikey Reply:

    @vplaza, I think you are! lol. I’m sure every GM and coach dreaded putting their team against Quick. All of the NHL knows that we’re in the position that we’re in because of JQ.

    If JQ asks us for more money than allowed under the cap, i will give portions of my paycheck to him under the table. i think we all should!

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @Mikey,

    Like I said, I hope I’m wrong. Thing is, all throughout the year, we knew he was doing great despite the poor goal support. But being on the west coast, he didn’t get as much attention as Lundqvist.

    Then, when he really got on everyone’s radar and GMs may have started to think that they should take a look at him, he had the bad game at a crucial time.

    That would be fair if that one game tainted his entire body of work this year.

    Penner & Stoll contracts are almost $8.0 million. Expect them gone at the end of the season.

    @Gustavo, I won’t lose any sleep if we cut loose Penner as we should. I hope we can some how keep Stoll.

    You’re not going to see Gagne again this year, if ever
    It’s been noted several times that he’s not skating.

  52. Gustavo says:

    The GMs know very well who Quick is and what he has done, does and will continue to do for as long as he is on the ice. Another reason why I think Quick will win is that all the other voting GMs will want to stick it to Dean Lombardi.

    Quick’s contract expires after the 12/13 season, so Lombardi needs to sign him this summer to a long term contract. A Vezina trophy will look very worthy of ‘highest paid player’ status in his resume. If they gave $7.0 million to Drew Doughty based on future potential, Quick deserves just as much or more for his proven performance.

    At this point, Bernier is no longer much of a negotiating deterrent for Lombardi to deal with Quick. JB deserves a shot at a starting job. So I see JB going to the Oily for that spanking new 1st round pick they got the other day.

    vplaza Reply:

    @Gustavo,

    Now that’s a novel idea. Other GMs would vote for a Vezina winner to stick it to another GM.

    [Reply]

    Gustavo Reply:

    @vplaza,

    They did it with Federov. And don’t forget for a minute that GM’s primary job is too damn hard these days with all the parity in the league. they’ll use anything in their power to gain an advantage for their own team. Including driving up another team’s player value to restrict that team salary cap to compete for free agents, for instance.

    Keep in mind 27 other team do not have Vezina candidates. Lundvquist and Rinne are signed till 2014 and 2019, respectively. So why not drive up Quick’s resume value for the upcoming summer negotiations??

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @Gustavo,

    But doesn’t that also have the effect of driving up the price of goaltenders in general around the league?

    Just playing devil’s advocate.

    I wouldn’t be surprised to see Quick nominated for the Hart, too. In fact, I think he has a better chance of winning the Hart as the most valuable player to his team than he does winning the Vezina this season, but it will be close. My money is on Lundqvist to win.

    Congrats to Quick on a hugely deserved honor. Win, lose or draw, it’s a terrific recognition of his skills and how much he has meant to our team. Quick will have MANY more chances to win in the Vezina, esp after we raise the Cup this year!!!!!!! GKG.

    Not many us had faith that Quick would lead our team, much less the NHL. He has made us all believers. Dude has stepped up BIG TIME. To be considered for the Vesta is great and should amount to some big dollars. Good guys do finish first. He’s a family man and soft spoken. Dude shows up and does his job. What more can we ask for. Quick will end up being the greatest Kings goalie of all time. I doubted him early on. @puck73 set me right. I owe him a dinner if he ever comes out to Salt Lake. We will win the Cup and J. Quick will be our Keeper.

    @King Charles of Salt Lake,

    To be clear, not many of us were sure that Quick was the “one” after his meltdown down the stretch during the Olympic year. BUT, after he bounced back the next season and really took it to the next level this season, I think many of us have faith in JQ.

    I think we can count on one or two hands who here still hold on the the belief that our future is not with JQ.

    Good luck to Quick, he’s going to need it for the Vezina.

    Lund is destined to make it because of East coast bias. Bob McKenzie reported a few weeks ago that he talked to a lot of GM’s and the majority were leaning towards Lund.

    This is such great news! Congratulations Quick!

    If all things were equal (IE Quick got the attention that Lundqvist does) then Quick should be the favorite IMO.

    It’s great to see all of his hard work recognized. Even if he will give credit to the rest of the team first.

    Best Kings goalie ever, hands down. Sorry Rogie, you were great too, but I think you’ve just been passed.

    This is great news! And although the award is for the regular season, I think the fact that the Kings just finished a big series win with Vancouver, might subtly sway a few GM’s as it brought him into the spotlight more about just how important he is to this team and how he carries the team on his back most nights.

    Lundqvist is probably the favorite, but I think Quick has a good shot to win it. Pekka Rinne also had an amazing season, but if I were a Coyote’s fan, I might feel a little slighted because Mike Smith had a helluva season and deserves a nomination as well…

    Regardless… GO QUICK GO!

    It beggars any imaginable wisdom, conventional or @defrim’s, that GM’s could possibly be “tuned out” to the fortunes of ANY team or player in the league – let alone Jonathan Quick!!!
