Saturday practice update

The Kings spent the start of today’s practice on special-teams work and are now going through drills. Kyle Clifford isn’t on the ice, so he is almost certainly out for Game 5. More updates to come…

  1. Other than the assumed scratches in purple, the forwards are split in half with the top two lines in white and the bottom two lines in grey. Not sure why there’s no other color separation. Here’s a nice clip of JW getting the best of Bernier. http://youtu.be/HYvH1F-Fi6k

    Get well quick, Cliffy.
    I have to say the Kings dont have to worry about Vancouver bringing any momentum from game 4 into tomorrow’s game since it seems like weeks since they last played. It will be like starting a new 3-game series where the Kings need only win once.

    @kopitaristheman, Glad to hear he got that kind of suspension. But to be honest, Shea Weber should have gotten 5+ game suspension on his head slam hit of Zetterberg. Just because Weber is a marquis player doesn’t make him exempt from suspensions. NHL is biased just like any other judge/jury on these issues.

  6. Rainman says:

    Off topic…..Does anyone really believe that Brendan Shanahan is the one calling the shots on player suspensions / supplemental discipline? I think he is just a mouthpiece for Gary Bettman, the Owners & General Managers. I’m glad that Raffi Torres received a 25 game suspension. This isn’t the first time he’s been in trouble with the League.

    I can’t believe that Arron Asham only received a 4 game suspension. He could have ended Brayden Schenn’s career with that violent cross-check. That to me was worthy of at least a 15 game suspension.

    I recently read someone’s idea about changing the current system of supplemental discipline. They said that the League should forget about fining the guilty player, but should instead impose a very substantial fine against that players team. This substantial fine would then count against the teams salary cap.

    I have a strong feeling the Collective Bargaining Agreement is going to get extremely contentious and the possibility of a lengthy lockout looms large come September.

    @Rainman,

    I find it hard to beleive (actually, I don’) that Raffi Torres, according to Brendan Shannahan, had 3 penalties (charging, interference and an illegal hit to the head) on that play and not one call was made. He played the remainder of the game. Was it the same officials as the Ryan Clowe incident?

    [Reply]

    Dump and Chase Reply:

    @FanoKings,

    Thats because looking at the hit, he barely does any of those thing. The hit is horribly violent but you can only see a tiny jump right before the hit on slow motion replay. Also, although he makes contact with the head, Hossa’s head is down and Torres leads with his shoulder. As the rules state, its your fault if you make contact with the head if the player’s head is staying constant before the hit but that is really only something that can be analyzed after the fact. And lastly, the hit was RIGHT after Hossa passed the puck. I’ve seen WAY later hits than that that weren’t called.

    When looking at the replay, you can see how dangerous the hit was, but on the ice, in real time, it just looked like a clean hit much like the one Brown delivered to the ginger.

    @Dump and Chase,
    VERY nice overview of that play and why it was(n’t) handled the way that it was.

    @Rainman, I think they should make the team play a player short on the bench for each game the player is suspended. Not enough punishment to the team at the moment

    Absolutely. If anything, the yotes should be pleased with that trade. I’d give up Torres for Hossa any day.

    A Player that makes a brutish play such as that is simply a proxy for the coach of the team.
    The coach or hockey club should also be sanctuoned in egregious situations.
    Next to go if things don’t go right for his team on the scoreboard; Brad Marchand of the Bees!

    @Rainman, The fines are pretty small considering their pay, and even smaller I. It’s going to the players fund!
    it is about time they handed out a big suspension, they have been very weak really!
    I am still pissed about Webber not getting one, and the coaches getting fined for talking bad about Crosby’s punk behavior, the censorship is LAME! The clowneshoes not getting anything either, really? And Kessler for trying to eye gouge DD?! That’s. Of a fight that is a little bitch move, a cat fight over the ref!

    I hope for game 5 we get new officials, and I hope the new CBA finds a way to hang buttman upside down with a ring gag and allows players to practice some shots in his mouth.

    I do believe shanny is just a mouth piece now, the clown and webber incidents proved it!

    @Rainman, How about the crosscheck that Schenn put on Crosby across the back for no other reason that retaliation…He’s becoming another goon just like the rest of Lavy’s Flyers.Hopefully the Penns come back and get rid of these guys.

    [Reply]

    bbb7 Reply:

    @Rainman, The worst thing here is players dont get paid for the playoffs (apart from splitting bonus money) so Torres isnt losing any salary for any games he misses for as long as Phoenix lasts, he only loses salary if he missed regular season games next year. That’s ridiculous. He should pay a fine equivalent to the number of games missed in the playoffs.

    So I guess the league has declined to review the flying elbow to the head Brown got. I guess if he had fallen to the ice and flopped around and maybe had to be helped off the ice the league would have at least to look it. I guess intent to injure is still considered to be below results of the hits.

That being said My hope is that everyone who can make it will have a great time. Guess I’m stuck watching the games on the wonderful NBC Networks. Anyhow hope Clifford gets better fast. We need his toughness. We took two games… just TOOK them. I look for a tough game with our Kings winning 5-1. We are the better team. Yes they have the twins, but as a team we are tougher. Hopefully we come out and set the tone early. Just keep playing the defense that we have been playing and the best team will win. This series will not go 6 games, it ends Sunday.

    That means Bertuzzi would still not be playing for his cowardly hit on MOORE..and several other dirty players would be seen nevermore. How about the Sedin elbow in the mouth of Brownie and nary a word of any penalty!!And Clown’s stick on the ice..yuk.

    I dont like linking the penalty to an injury. You can have a dirty hit without injury or a clean hit followed by an injury so I hate how the league links them together. Webers hit was the worst intent to injure so far, but he gets off scott free cuz no injury took place, stupid if you ask me.

    Can the LA Kings will win the series at Vancouver because the Canucks are down so far with a 3-1 so far for the series and the LA Kings should change the Defenseman lines like

    Drewiski Greene so what do you think

    so what do you think

    [Reply]

    Adam M Reply:

    @Duncanz, okay @Duncanz that I liked your idea and here is the key game for game 5 at Vancouver that we need to warned the Canucks sometimes the Canucks likes to play dirty and a lot of fighting we should not do sometimes the Canucks likes to injured the Good players on the Kings is a bad terrible idea and sometimes that happens if the Canucks will not listen to the Ref’s that means we have to forfeit the game and kings wins series 4-1 for doing that
