Darryl Sutter’s postgame thoughts…
(on whether Jonathan Quick “stole’’ the game…)
SUTTER: “It’s playoff hockey. Your goaltenders have to be big.’’
(on the Kings’ key to success in this series…
SUTTER: “I think every game has been quite different, to be quite honest. There hasn’t been any one, driving thing.’’
(on Dustin Penner moving up to play with Mike Richards…)
SUTTER: “We were just moving our left wingers around, quite honestly. Kinger [Dwight King] can play with any of those guys, and Brownie plays his off side, so we’ve lost two left wingers during the series and we had to move guys around.’’
(on Dustin Brown’s game…)
SUTTER: “Yeah, he was huge again tonight. From the way he plays, he was really good again. … That’s why he’s our captain.’’
(on whether the game picked up after Brown’s hit on Henrik Sedin…)
SUTTER: “I think it picked up the after-the-whistle stuff, that’s for sure.’’
(on not relaxing with a 3-0 series lead…)
SUTTER: “We’ll deal with that in the next two days. We still have to learn how to win, right? You don’t get nothing for three. … I think the toughest part of winning, when you have four-out-of-seven (series), is the first game. The the second game gets tougher. Then the third game gets tougher. Then the fourth game gets tougher. And that is a fact. … I know how tough it can be to win a fourth game.’’
(on whether he’s expecting even better from Vancouver in Game 4…)
SUTTER: “I think that would be a good way of approaching it, so that our team doesn’t relax.’’
(on what he said to the team in the second intermission…)
SUTTER: “Nothing I don’t normally say.’’
(on staying composed, with penalties…)
SUTTER: “There is a composure factor that has to come into it, if you want to be a good playoff player or a good playoff team or a good playoff coach. There is a composure factor there and if you can spread that around a little bit that’s good.”
Great energy from the fans tonight, as usually for the Staples during the playoffs. I was begging Sutter to call that time out in the second period on that icing play… and he came through. Great UGLY win by the Kings. That’s playoff hockey! GKG!!!

@Poonagi, the energy from the fans would be even more inspiring if we could eliminate all the artificial sound. These are the Playoffs and the stands are full. There is nothing better than the sound of a sell-out crowd. We do not need the loudspeakers to blare “Make Some Noise.” We do not need the Dance-Cam, the Gold Gym Cam, the Kiss Cam, the South Park character, the moron with the drum in the lion’s outfit, or the countless other cacophonous distractions. Playoff hockey has its own special sound — let us hear it.

And running those lame give aways during the playoffs is also annoying. Lemon heads … lame, Parking Spot … very very lame.

@Hadley, “Cacophonous distractions,” nice use of your Roget’s Thesaurus but save the 5 cent words and be a grumpy old fan somewhere else. When fans starting cheering “Go Kings Go,” do you say “Shhh, I’m trying to watch the game…”
A lot of kids go to the game and they enjoy Cartman (that’s the South Park character’s name)and they love Bailey. Staples isn’t a old age home.

@Maury, Hey guys…. If you get rid of those lame Lemon Head and kiss cam distractions, you will add 20.00 a game to the ticket price. AEG is in business to make money. I agree it’s lame, and so would Luke et al, but I’d rather spend that 20.00 on beer than admission.

@Maury, What next, get rid of the Hero of the Game? “Yea, that soldier in the wheel chair is a real distraction.”
Or how about Honorary Player of the Game where some kid gets to stand in the line-up with the players because of the good deeds and community service they’ve done. Does that take away from your purity of the game?
I agree the Kiss-cam and the Flex-cam are lame, in particular during the third period when the game is at stack but they’re harmless fun for the majority of fans.
And FYI, the mascot, Bailey? He is nammed after Ace Bailey, a Kings scout killed on 9/11.
KellyGirl Reply:
April 16th, 2012 at 7:59 am
@Maury: Ace Bailey’s memory is shamefully abused by the association with that mascot. A man who died in the 9/11 attacks should be memorialized with a retired hockey sweater, not with a drum-banging goon in a lion costume interrupting the flow of play and pandering to the drunken masses.

@Osaka, You know, my Gaijin friend, I hadn’t heard him say that but it has to be said that there have been so many twists in the tail so far this season that you don’t know which end of the serpent you’re looking at anymore, eh?
These last 3 games for our boys have felt pretty good, but to be quite honest with you (still channeling DS) I am always wary of what the next shock to the system will be. I mean, the way I see it there are still way roo many variables within the team to ever get comfortable, let alone everything going on on the outside that you can’t control. I’ve become a little philosophical by now and, like I recognize in yourself, I don’t get so easily caught up in the emotional extremes. Nervous and worked up.sure, but not crazed with victory or defeat like a few of the denizens.
Probably enough to say that momentum can be an amazing thing and when it’s with you you just feel like the luck’s going your way more. Vice versa when it’s not – and we all understand that only too well after what we’ve experienced over 85 games.
Nothing to do then but to trust the protaganists, and to trust that events will get a little less strange and a little more predictable …. But they wouldn’t … because it’s hockey … and it’s The Kings!
The wrangle continues!

(on whether Jonathan Quick stole the game … )
SUTTER: “You’re in the playoffs. Your best goalies have to be your best goalies. Jonathan wasn’t in tonight – but Jonathan was.”
( on is it too much to ask you to attribute one simple thing to your winning the three games? … )
SUTTER: ” To be quite honest all the games have been real different I think. If I could of thought of one thing I probably wouldn’t bother tellin’ ya anyway.”
(on Dustin Penner surprising himself and the hockey world and moving up for some second line minutes … )
SUTTER: ” He aint really Mark Messier, is he. We’re still just experimenting to be quite honest with ya. Kinger [Dwight Kinger] can play wherever you stick him, and you got Brownie [obviously no accreditation necessary] playing his off wing out there, so you got two left wingers who are banged up an’ leakin’ oil in the series so we had to shuffle guys up and throw them around.”
(on Dustin Brown making Mike Tyson look like Pee Wee Herman with increasing regularity … )
SUTTER: ” Yeah, I hate to say it ‘cos I’m trying to find critical things to say ‘cos a lot of there egos are too big, but yeah, he was really good again. He was pretty big. From the way he plays, he was really good. He’s our captain so he’d better be.”
(on the pure gargantuan effect the Brown [Brownie] slam on Henrik Sedin had on the game … )
SUTTER: “It brought the after-the-whistle part-time punks off the bench – both benches.”
(on not putting up the “Gone Fishing” signs and kicking it in the night clubs with an unassailable, good as gold lead there … )
SUTTER: “We’ll figure that out the next couple of days. We still gotta figure out the score in the series, right? I lost count back there. You don’t get nuthin’ for free [three?] … To be quite honest, I think the toughest game to win in a series is the first game, then the second game gets tougher than that one. Then the third game is the hardest to win. Then the fourth one gets even tougher. And that’s the truth of it. I know how tough the fourth one is – now that firstvtoughest game doesn’t look so tough really … right?”
(on whether the spent force has an ounce of a chance of making Game 4 as tough for you as you touted … )
SUTTER: ” I guess that’s how you’d look at it. So they all don’t go fishin’ an’ hittin’ the clubs for two days, hm hm … I aint gonna say any names … ”
(on what must have been an extraordinarily inspiring pep-talk before the third period … )
SUTTER: “Nuthin’ I haven’t said before or I’m gonna bother sharin’ with you guys.”
(on your newfound (finally) ability to keep your cool on penalties … )
SUTTER: ” There’s this composure aspect to be a decent playoff team, or a decent playoff player, or a decent playoff coach. There’s this composure aspect … an’ you got me rattled with all y’boring questions so I forgot what you do with it next … spread it around a little bit, I think … right?”

I think the Vancouver game plan of throwing tons of pucks at Quick wasn’t well scouted. The more action Quick sees the better he always is. Games when he doesn’t see a lot of shots is when one may squeak by him. Of course you need to shot to score, but they were just throwing everything at the net, low percentage scoring opportunities. Terry Murray is scouting for the Kings, not Vancouver right?
Sorry TM, just poking fun, no disrespect meant.

Really interesting that he said “I think every game has been quite different, to be quite honest. There hasn’t been any one, driving thing.’’ I know before the series Vigneault was said to have been keeping his game plan and strategies a “secret” even from his own players, just days before the series started.
He has been changing it up every game in the hopes that the Kings who are usually slow to adjust, would not be able to match up with Vancouver if they were forced to adjust on the fly, or during the game. The Kings have been very good on that “push back” factor, and when their backs are against the wall, they are having that “bend don’t break” mentality.
Very disciplined play, and even when Vancouver tries to disrupt the flow of the game with nonsense, the Kings have done well to not get taken out of their focus for what needs to be accomplished.
Excellent Job by the Kings coaching staff, and I’m very proud of these players. Just mak’em pay on the PP, and somebody give’em the finger when they skate by their bench!

@TheRussianKing, King and Nolan started it player wise and Carter came in and finished what was needed. Sutter helped in noticing Nolan and King and having Dean call them up. That is what got Mike Richards going. Quick obviously kept us in the playoff hunt all season and if it weren’t for him, no matter what changes were made we would of never made it to the Playoffs.

On the other hand, ahaving got away with it, that has to boost Hotcakes confidence, and if the Kings are going to win 13 more games, this playoff campaign, they are going to need more out of Penner than his GWG in game 1.

Everyone is playing a part and that’s what its going to take,,, But As our leader Brown has been fantastic. Captain Fantastic, Captain Crunch, Captain Jack, Captain Kirk, I don’t care I’m just glad he’s OUR CAPTAIN!!!
Sure is nice waking up with a 3-0 lead. We still have one more to go. Please don’t let up now. Finish it!!! We can use a few days to get some guys healthy. Carter still looks as if the ankle is holding him back. I think we may have rushed him to soon. He needs to be at top form, because winning the 4th game in a series will not be easy. Plus Clifford needs to get back in there. We need his size and heart on our 4 line. Looks like the trades we made are starting to work out. It has taking sometime to mend together, but it’s starting to payoff now. ALL HAIL THE KINGDOM!!!

@King Charles of Salt Lake,
DS should have called a timeout in the previous game when the Kings iced the puck late in the 2nd (?)period and Vancouver scored off the faceoff. He blew that one, but made the right call last night.

Quick vs Bernier….Where’s Poorman when you need him? lol
Anyone else left that still feels Brownie shouldn’t be the Captain?
Yeah, didn’t think so.
Brownie’s a beast on the ice..every game, every shift. What a player and leader.
What else can be said about Quick…Best goalie in the NHL IMO…watching him every game and see how big he’s come up in this series, you can’t argue with the assessment.
He’s going to cost us a lot in terms of contract $$, but he’s worth every penny he’ll get.
Way to drop the gloves Kopi! I guess that ends all the talk about Lady Bing trophy lol
Good job Kopi, now don’t do it again..you’re way to valuable sitting 5 min.
Very proud the way the boys have played so far, but the 4th is always the toughest one to get. Finish them off on home ice and heal up for the net round.
GO KINGS!!!!!!!

Yeah, I agree about trading Bernier, but if we can’t get a dominant top 6 forward for him, I wouldn’t trade him.

I hope everyone who watchedon tv in LA enjoyed the cvall from Bob and Jim…unofortunately the rest of us were stuck watching a brutal broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada.
I could swear that Craig Simpson was crying during the hockey game and the play by play guy was feeding him tissues!
Simpson is unquestionably the worst hockey analyst I’ve ever heard in my life. No matter what dirty play the Nucks did to earn a pnealty, it was always the Kings fault and we should have been the ones penalized.
Im sending off an email to NBC (I have nothing better to do at work lol) begging them to show a different feed of the game. I realize that they are Canadian announcers and perhaps the regular Canuck announcers during the season (don’t know that for fact and really don’t care either)but show a tiny little bit of objectivity and stop embarrassing yourselves on TV.

@nykingfan, While you’re at it can you also include Randy Hahn & Drew Remenda and Doc Emrick & Eddie Olczyk. I honestly don’t mind the VAN announcers that much (probably because I’m used to them on the EA Sports NHL games). But I’m with you. I think NBC needs new announcers. Doc Emrick and Eddie Olczyk are so bad I have to put the games on mute and Hahn & Remenda just cheer for the Sharks. I found out Hahn headed the committee that brought the Sharks to SJ, so you know you won’t get a fair game with him calling it.

@nykingfan,
Yep, we had to mute the TV and go with Nick Nixon on the stream from the Internet. It was odd because Nick was about two seconds ahead of the TV, but better than having to listen to those fools on TV. I even heard the goal before it was shown on TV.

Also, was it true that Penner only played 1 minute in the 2nd period? That’s what the Canuck announcers were saying

Rich I am so impressed with how you are able to translate the audible rumbles that come from DS in these interviews.
I just watched NHL 2 Night and could barely understand anything he said!
Then I come here and, as always you have for us, in English, the transcript of what DS spoke in Sutter language!!
Thanks Rich!

Anyone read the Vancouver Sun or the Vancouver Province? The Sun was complaining about the “crappy” ice and both papers thought Brownie “blindsided” The Province is calling for a suspension! Sedin. Makes for interesting reading, for sure!

Sedin came out and said it was a clean hit.
It can never be the canucks fault that they’re down 3-0 it has to be something else..the ice, the Kings dirty play, Quick getting lucky..etc

@Shakes, The one thing I love about Bob and Jim is that you know they’re rooting for the Kings, but the call it like it is. If the other team scores a pretty goal, Bob will still yell loudly and say it. As a matter of fact, you could argue that the one criticism against them is that sometimes they’re overly critical of what the Kings (almost tooo unbiased). But when the Kings do well, you can hear it in their voices and that’s just awesome
our best players are our best players….plus/minus stats so far show The Captain leading the way…

Willie Mitchell has been an absolute STUD in this series. I can’t count how many scoring chances he has prevented. As far as I’m concerned, he has been the Kings best player so far (along with Brown & Quick).

Just read an interesting stat this morning. In baseball, basketball, and hockey, where there are 7 game series, 297 times teams have been down 0-3 and only 4 have come back to win. VERY VERY daunting task lays ahead for Vancover!
[Reply]
This from the Vancouver Sun by Cam Cole
“…Henrik Sedin, who missed only one shift after a punishing blindside hit by Kings’ Dustin Brown that left him crawling to the bench, scratching at the door like a cat that’s been left out all night..”
Vancover fans plain and simply not used to watch their team deliver hard CLEAN hits during a hockey game. Their hockey culture is morally corrupt to the core.

@Gustavo, Lets talk about said “blindside” Hit. Yes it was a brutal hit, But it was a clean hit. Not a hit to the head, not a hit just below the chin as the BS announces said, it was a good clear brutal hit. And the reason he was crawling was in my opinion he lost his breath. I’ve had the wind knocked out of me and let me tell you that was just how it was…

@pr0cess, Yeah, that’s exactly it.. and aside from any bumps and bruises, Sedin looked perfectly aware and alert when he was back on the ice. Which frankly is good to see. Brownie delivered a solid hockey hit… they type of standout room temperature changing hit that fans had been asking for at points in the season. I mean his hit total over the year is as impressive as it always is, but he generally hasn’t been going after massive hits because more often than not it means he’s going out of position to do it… this one was just sitting there.
Also on a sidenote it shows that there are lots of different ways to be a leader, whether playing sports or in business, and you can be successful in different avenues. Brownie never seems like much of a big talked or ra-ra-ra guy, but he shows it in his work ethic. Sometimes it results in points and goals that make the highlights and sometimes not, but you just don’t really see a game where you could say “he took the night off”.

@Gustavo, I think the writer’s use of “blindside” is correct. It was a blindside, meaning he never saw it. Yes it was clean. Brownie never left his skates, didn’t lead with an elbow, and most importantly it wasn’t from behind and it wasn’t late. I think it was 0.3 sec after the hit…? The league will review anything over 0.5 secs. (Rich can maybe confirm) Just like a clean sack on a QB, blindside is not illegal. It’s the opposing player to keep the head on a swivel. I think the comment on the writer’s quote is a little harsh. However, I do think it is quilty by association so I don’t necessary blame you.

1st 3-0 series lead in Kings history? I guess I had never thought about it before. Does feel odd, but very nice. I could used to this LOL
[Reply]
Can’t say enough about quicker but Richards set the tone for everyone in Game 1 and everyone has bought in. Richard’s quote from Game 1 “give a hit, take a hit” has been the difference. The Cunucks can give hits but they can’t take them. That is why they are taking all these retaliation penalties. Even if the kings were 0-8 last night, Foxy said it best, it is killing their momentum. I know this is the third season in a row for the playoffs but again, Richards set the tone and look how great Brownie and Mitchell have played. Everyone from Williams to Lewis and the rest of the D. They are all taking hits to make the safe play and getting back up and keeping it going. Kings look like the playoff veterans and the Cunucks look like the young frustrated first timers.
I would love to see a diving penalty called on Kessler. That would be the icing on the cake.
