Drew Doughty’s postgame thoughts…
(on Jonathan Quick’s game…)
DOUGHTY: “He played unbelievable tonight. We felt like they definitely outplayed us tonight. They had a lot of quality scoring chances, and he came up big when he had to make that save. It was a great job by him tonight, and to get that win was huge.’’
(on leading 3-0 in the series, with two days off coming up…)
DOUGHTY: “We can’t take our foot off the pedal. We’ve got to keep going. We’ve got three days off, and we have to make sure we’re refocused. We have to start focusing on the next game at hand. It’s another must-win game. We don’t want to give them any momentum by winning one game in our barn and then taking it back to theirs. It’s a huge game, and a must-win.’’
(on whether Dustin Brown’s hit on Henrik Sedin changed the momentum…)
DOUGHTY: “I don’t know. It was definitely a big hit by Brownie. That was one of the better hits I’ve seen in a long time. To do it on a star player, their best player, is just an ever keyer part. It definitely gave us some momentum, to show that our leadership was the showing the way to go. We’ve all just got to follow that.’’
(on Brown’s play in this series…)
DOUGHTY: “He has scored some huge goals for us, and at the same time he’s playing well defensively and making those big hits. That’s what we need from our captain. He’s leading, on and off the ice, and scoring big goals like that is going to take us a long way.’’
Not the first time Quick has saved the day for the guys. They didn’t play their best but, Quick to the rescue.

@Ads,
Willie is the man, and I think Voynov has been great too. He’s made some mistakes but I love his instincts to rush in when opportunities present themselves. And the guy likes to shoot the puck!
I’m high on Kings Hockey Heaven right now….it doesn’t happen often so I’m going to enjoy the hell out of it. But I’m holding one outcome in my mind, and that is the Stanley Cup. GKG!
I don’t know about “a lot of quality scoring chances,” but I do know that he gave up very few, if any rebounds, and he saw the puck very well. As for Doughty, well, he stunk for the most part, but this was a case where they were able to skate off the ice with the win, and for that I am grateful.
Carter, Doughty and Penner… invisible to detrimental depending on the shift.
I’LL CERTAINLY TAKE IT.

Anyone else notice that Doughty sat out most of the last few minutes of the game? It was all Greene, Scuderi and Mitchell. Boy Wonder has lost quite a bit of his luster.

@rick,
Greene, Scuderi, and Mitchell are our shut down guys who are always in the game that late with a lead. Nothing against Doughty, just that shutting down is what we pay those guys to do, what we pay Doughty to do is a bit different. He’s looked a lot better in this series than he has all season. His absence at the end had nothing to do with his play.

@Dominick (defrim65), I haven’t been real impressed with Doughty’s game here in the playoffs so far. I like that he’s keeping his composure, and not taking dumb retaliation penalties, but I feel like he’s not being very assertive. A lot of time he’s so nonchalant in our zone. I don’t like his reads on the breakouts lately, and neither on the power play.
If anything, Martinez was way more impressive tonight. I liked that Sutter wound up pairing A Mart with Doughty on the PP later in the game. Marty was making the right jumps, and being aggressive and in control. Looked real good.

Dominick (defrim65) Reply:

@PP Anybody?,
I won’t argue that Marty has had some real good looks, but he’s also not seeing the same level of qual/comp that DD is, or anywhere the same minutes in defensive zone match ups as DD. Since JJ was traded, DD, and Mitchell have taken turns on those match ups.
The fact that our GAA is going down, suggests that DD is more effective then anyone is giving him credit for. Marty, and VV are a couple of studs as far as puck movers, but they aren’t taking the H2H match ups that DD is.
Here is the H2H match ups for the game tonight
http://www.timeonice.com/H2H1112.html?GameNumber=30153&submit=Go
As you can see, DD, and Scuds took on Booth, and Kesler, while Mitchell and VV took on Sedins line. Marty, and Green had their ice time spread out evenly, and didn’t have a specific shut down assignment (although they did see time against the Pahlson line).
DD, and Scuds have been really good, but the guys they’re covering are going to get scoring chances, and they are capable of taking over a game, and maaking the guys covering them look stupid if they are not kept in check.
Doughty’s doing a fantastic job right now, even if it doesn’t seem like it.

@Dominick (defrim65), I wasn’t really dismissing DD’s defensive play. I think his coverage has been solid. I just think he’s been very nonchalant in what to do with the puck when he has it. He’s not being quite the overall impact player that I know he can be on both sides of the puck. Granted, as long as he shuts down his assignments, and we win the series, it’s all gravy. I just know that he has more to his game, and I just am not seeing it at this point. That’s all.
Dear NBC Sports Network & NHL Network,
You may want to do some research on more teams besides Pittsburgh and Vancouver if you want to have anything relevant to say for the next 2 months. Also stop acting like you know how good our team is when you basically shat upon us for 6 months by not really watching much of our games.

@Kenny44, Agreed. Seems like the coaching staff is telling these guys to be careful of the Canucks, because they are oh so talented and could mount a comeback at anytime. I think they’d be best served by playing to their own strengths, and believing in their own game, rather than sit back, trying to play safe and protect against the Nucks. almost cost them tonight. Glad they got some confidence in the 3rd, and started to make some plays. This series should be a clean sweep if the Kings can just really start to believe that they are the ones to beat.
