First-round local TV schedule announced

The Kings have announced their local TV schedule for the first-round playoff series against Vancouver. Games 1 (Wednesday) and 2 (Friday) will be shown on Ch. 13. Game 3 (Sunday) will be on Fox Sports West. Game 4 (April 18) will be available only on NBC Sports Network, but the local blackout will be lifted. Game 5 (April 22) would be on Fox Sports West. Game 6 (April 24) would be on Prime Ticket. Game 7 (April 26) would be on Fox Sports West. For those outside of Southern California, the first four games have been confirmed for NBC Sports Network.

The bad news, for those locally, is that Bob Miller and Jim Fox will not be calling Game 4. My understanding is that Fox Sports West, Prime Ticket and Ch. 13 all had other events scheduled.

All of the games will be on radio, on 1150-AM, and there will be a special road edition of “Kings Talk” after Game 1 on Wednesday night.

I just really hope the game before doesn’t go into OT.

    [Reply]

    eyesk8r Reply:

@Kozak, Most likely, NBCSN will piggy back off the CBC or TSN feeds…NBCSN, doesn’t have a big enough crew to broadcast all the games, and we all know the Rangers and Sens series, will have a NBC crew, along with Detroit, Boston and Chicago…The rest will more than likely be piggy backs of what ever network is covering the game for the local team…Philly and SJ will just be piggy backing off the CSN feed, since NBC and CSN are one of the same now…

    [Reply]

    Spiderpig Reply:

@eyesk8r, The Rangers only have their Saturday games scheduled for NBCSN, so they’re not getting a crew for the series, if any at all. It will be interesting to see how many games NBC produces. This series may get a crew because it’s the only one in the West with all games in the Pacific Time Zone and CSN broadcasts can be used for Sharks and Blackhawks games.

    [Reply]

    Kozak Reply:

@eyesk8r, I’m fully prepared to miss the beginning of late running games. Happened last year with Versus. Too bad they can’t use Kings feed for the games

    [Reply]

    Tony in Denver Reply:

@Kozak, Can you imagine if they had a 5 OT game back east, and we missed the ENTIRE Kings game? It could happen.

    Tony in Denver Reply:

@Kozak, We will probably get the Canucks feed since NBC broadcasters will be assigned to the east coast games. Also, with the games being on NBC sports network, expect to miss part of the Kings game if the previous game (which tomorrow is Philly vs Pitt) goes to OT… Also expect them to refer to the Kings game as BONUS COVERAGE.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Tony in Denver, There are 3 other networks showing games so they can just put it on one of those channels until the earlier game ends. Also on Satellite (not sure about cable) there are extra NBC Sports Channels so it could be there.

    [Reply]

    Tony in Denver Reply:

@Jeff_R, I’m hoping so, because having a doubleheader during the playoffs (when a game can go all night) does a real dis-service to fans of the second game.

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@Jeff_R, They can, but will they?

    Jeff_R Reply:

@mrbrett7, If they don’t then there is going to be a big bruhaha amongst fans and the NHL for going with Comcast/NBC instead of ESPN. ESPN always starts games on one of there other channels, when they have an overrun of the first game. NHL won’t be in a good light if they didn’t put this into NBC’s/Comcast contract.

    Stuart Reply:

@Jeff_R, that bruhaha is barely a small dust-up on the horizong for the Bettman gang. It’s been this way for at least 4 years now. A game starts at 4:00, but then the game that starts at 5:00 is joined in progress!! WTF is that??? I was a little relieved when last season I saw that Versus had an “alternate” station and I thought that it was for the playoffs, when multiple games would be starting around the same time, but noooooooooo, twasn’t the case.

I’m very hopeful that NBC will use thier resources to show the games, but I’m not holding my breath. ESPN is/was the best, Gary Thorne and Bill Clement were my favorite non Bob and Jim tandem…

    Ezra Reply:

@Jeff_R, The Stanley Cup promos they’ve been showing on NBC Sports Network mention 4 channels: NBC, CNBC, NBC Sports, and NHL Network. My guess is that NHL Network will be used for the overflow when games go in to extra time.

the quality on KCOP is awful. sucks that important games are subjugated to it.

    [Reply]

    Jones Reply:

@teki, Going to have to disagree with you on this one. KCOP actually broadcast their HD signal in 1080i while FSW and PT only broadcast Kings games in 720p. I notice a much sharper and better image on CH13.

Agreed. The quality of the KCOP broadcast is noticeably better than those on on FSW. Even the low audio problem I always on FSW and PT isn’t quite as bad on KCOP.

    [Reply]

    Ezra Reply:

@Jones, I prefer 720p60 over 1080i30 for sports. The game just seems smoother, especially with fast moving objects with the higher frame rate. That said, KCOP actually broadcasts in 720p (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KCOP#Digital_television). KDOC broadcast in 1080i, though.

    [Reply]

    egold44 Reply:

@Ezra, KCOP (my13) looks worse on my Time Warner Cable than FSW and PT. Seems like a compression issue to me, not 1080i vs. 720p which would be hard to differentiate with the naked eye, as they’re both HD standards. What I notice is a softness to the picture on KCOP (my13) — first thought it was inferior cameras and lenses, but it’s probably being extra-compressed by TWC, if some fans think it looks sharper. Guessing those who prefer KCOP’s (my13′s) picture quality are satellite subscribers or don’t have TWC.

    PRMan Reply:

@Ezra, DirecTV compresses locals WAY more than nationals. So 13 looks inferior to FSW and PT, but I agree that it actually sounds better.

What is up that FSW and PT have had embarrassingly bad sound for a decade and nobody notices or cares?

    Ezra Reply:

@egold44, Yeah, I’d wager on compression since I believe that they use the same exact production for KCOP as they do with FSW and Prime Ticket.

@teki, I’m with you. KCOP looks like crap for me. It’s really soft. FSN is much better / sharper.

Since others are saying KCOP is better… this tells me it’s strictly about carrier compression and isn’t the fault of KCOP.

I have AT&T uVerse. KCOP feed sucks.
The other guy has TimeWarner and his KCOP feed sucks.

Even if we figure it out, our carriers will NEVER do anything about it. For instance, Center Ice is still unavailable to me no matter how many times I request it.

It just proves that no matter what the occassion is, NHL hockey takes a back seat to everything else…KCOP, what a joke…All of us outside the LA market who pay for CI, still don’t get that game and will be stuck with NBCSN, which will be nothing more that a piggy back of CBC which will have the Canucks homer announcers…

    [Reply]

    Tony in Denver Reply:

@eyesk8r, Just hope they don’t go to OT on the east coast game, or you’ll be missing part of the Kings game. When the Kings played the Nucks 2 years ago, they joined the Kings game at the end of the first period (or maybe early in the second), and they also went to commercial before switching over (even though the game was going on).

    [Reply]

    Ezra Reply:

@eyesk8r, I find it funny how all these people outside of LA complain about it being on a free over-the-air broadcast channel that will reach 17.8 million people. Sure it might suck for the few Kings fans outside of LA, but think about how many local residents might not be hockey fans, but will tune in because it’s playoff hockey on a broadcast channel. It increases the Kings brand and hockey awareness in SoCal overall, which is a good thing, IMHO.

    [Reply]

    Blueline Reply:

@eyesk8r, At least you’ll get NBCSN, those of us in the LA market but too far to receive KCOP get blacked out and have to watch the game online which sucks when you have a nice HDTV sitting there with no signal to show.

Just bothered by how insignificant we are because of geographical location. As you were.

@Mikey, Well, you do realize that Daniel Sedin won the Ross Tropy, right? And that Richardson was benched most of the second half of the season? I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. I’d be willing to wager that a Kopitar injury would get more news time on that website than an Aaron Rome injury. And don’t forget that tons of pundits were raving about Jonathan Quick last week. The Kings are noticed.

‘Hollywood Billiards Club’, Hollywood Blvd @ Fwy 101.
    Great atmosphere and hockey friendly.
Draws fans from all over the continent for the games (except Hawaii & Kentucky)
Tons of TVs in various nooks and crannies to the side, and also in the main room.
    Comfy seating.
Good food & beer to boot in my experiences.
If your team is struggling you can always default to winning your beer money back on the tables.
Free Parking if you can get it – but it ‘magically’ becomes ‘Valet’ on the way out, so park up or down the hill on a side street if you don’t want to get that.

So who’s announcers are we listening to for game 4?…let me guess…Vancouvers…JOKE….OK lets hear it….awww thats ok…at least we get to hear Bob and Jim for one home game…typical…I dont give a crap if its dodgers or NBA or Angels…This is the NHL playoffs and our local team is at home and we want our announcers for every game they play…ALL of these games should be on FSN or Prime..PERIOD….the rest of the league doesnt have a this problem…do they?…..anyway…GKG…I know I know, but I’m pissed.

@TiredOfIt, Technically, they will be CBC’s announcer, not the Canucks local crew. However, I hate Jim Hughson, his PBP reminds me of the NHL video game series and he is very biased toward the Canucks. An idea is to see if KTLK will synch with the TV and mute the TV and listen to the radio broadcast. I wish I could get any of Bob and Jim’s broadcasts for this series here in Canada.

Just spoke to a guy at NBC Sports Network. He said there were only 3 zip codes that were going to experience a blackout…sounding like LA (I’m in San Diego). He also said it didn’t look like there was a contingency plan for the early game going into OT…King/Nucks would just be joined in progress.

    @Whochuk Shuchuk,

Which zip codes? I’m in Valencia, and most of the Kings, Ducks and Sharks home games have been blacked out for me.
