Carter back in practice

Jeff Carter is back in practice today in a regular white jersey. He’s skating among a group of four second-line players, with Mike Richards, Dwight King and Brad Richardson. The first line would seem to be a reunion of Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams. Hopefully, Carter will update his status, post-practice. More updates to come…

    @dbs,
    While I would agree that Quick is a huge factor to this teams success, (without him, I feel like we wouldn’t be in the playoffs) he only kept us in most games. When Carter came along it was like that extra shove we needed. Quick still kept us in the games, but the presence of Carter allowed the rest of the team to provide Quick the offensive support he needed to get the win.

    MM Reply:

    @Booga01, Dang, you beat me by a second lol. I agree with that line of thinking. Penner the last two games has done nothing but skate and lose the puck at the slightest physical contact. It’s pathetic.

    [Reply]

    PakiFan Reply:

    @MM,

    I agree Penner has done nothing the last few games offensively, but he has made some decent defensive plays on big guys on San Jose. We may need his size to bang bodies against Vancouver who is bigger than the Kings. They also play heavier and hit more than the Kings. If Penner can bang Bieksa, Salo, Burrows, etc. It will be worth it to have him in the lineup.

    Also, Richardson hasn’t done much the last two games either.

    MM Reply:

    @PakiFan, You make a very good point about Penner’s size. Richardson is undersized going up against Thornton and trying to take the puck from Douglas Murray on the forecheck. What I like about Richardson is the energy he brings and how the offensive cycles flow when he is working those boards. Yes, he has not scored since the Minnesota game but he does bring an energy that Penner hasn’t brought in a long, long while.

    DanFan Reply:

    @Booga01, If DS holds true to holding everyone accountable than there is no question that Richie should move to the 3rd line.

    I can’t agree if you’re talking about Richards, but something needs to be done with Penner..if that means he sits for Richardson, so be it.

    @California Royalty, Move Richardson off the 1st line but keep him on the 3rd or 4th line. Move Penner out.

    @MM, Completely agree. Penner is a waste out there — it’s effectively a pkill when he’s on the ice.

    He doesn’t care and it’s obvious. Not the type of player you want on your line-up during an intense playoff series.

    I pray that Saturday was his last game in a LAK jersey.

    Jeff_R Reply:

    @fsd1, You know I was just like you. Optimistic about Penner. Unfortunately that can only last so long. I kept saying hey he spent the offseason training he will be much better this year. Hey he is in a contract year he will be better. He is looking for a new contract for next year he will be better. Unfortunately nothing seems to work he just doesn’t have the drive to play and nothing is going to change that. His soon to be ex wife saw that and she high tailed it out of there. I feel sorry for him for that, but come on he looks good at times but nothing consistently. he takes one step forward and 2 GIANT steps back. He just does not have a the drive or fire to play. He is a great guy and all, very funny. Just doesn’t translate it on the ice, even though he has all the skill in the world. He just doesn’t have the heart or drive to play.

    purple and gold Reply:

    @California Royalty, Richardson would not be of much use on the fourth line. Sutter has been using the fourth line as a bang um up, dig it out of the offensive boards line, change the momentum kind of line. Richardson would get bumped off the puck so fast and make that line completely ineffective.

    If you take Penner out and put richardson in you again change the dynamic of that line, Penner is suposed to be a big body up front and when he is that line gets chances. Again Richardson will not fill that role and would make that line less productive.

    Richardson works with the first line because he is fast and can be in the right spot for playmakers a la Kopi to set him up for a good shot or rebound goal. he might work on the second, but you’d have to take out King and King is going to do a better job with the big body to dig out pucks and get to the front of the net then richadson is with his speed.

    Great to hear Carter is back to practice. Kopi is going to be a monster in the playoffs. I’m positive he is going to transfer all that energy he couldn’t us in last years playoffs, and make Vancover regret drawing the Kings in the first round. Richards, Carter, and King will follow-up that first line with a bang of their own. Penner is the only question mark in our fowards, but Richardson will fill in nicely if Penner lets us down.

    I’m disappointed we didn’t win the division, butI am happy we play the Canucks. They are dirty, cheap, and whine a whole lot, but they are good. If there is a team I want to see the Kings take out, it is that one

    Bench Penner, reinsert Carter, keep Richardson. When Penner is on the ice, the other team knows it can take a break and skate at half speed to keep up with him, he isn’t going to hit anyone, he will go to the front of the net and just park there until you give him a little shove at which time he will move and say “excuse me, very sorry.” Playing Penner thinking other teams will respect his ability didn’t work during the regular season and sure as heck won’t work in the play-offs. At least with Richardson you have hustle, speed, some hitting and unpredictability (since he doesn’t really know himself what he is doing).

    Jeff_R Reply:

    @Michael J, To take that analogy further, Richie is that utility infielder who hits 7 home runs in the regular season year after year, but then comes alive and hits 7 home runs in the Playoffs/World Series. I’ve seen that before. Chris Kontos ring a bell?

Worse than that, the guy doesn’t hustle or generally seem to care while he’s on the ice. Funny, but I always seem to notice he has one hand on his stick as he very gingerly strolls back to the bench to change lines after 30 seconds of ineffectively putzing around — usually at pretty inopportune times for a change too.

    My onle beef with Versus or whatever is the way they BOTCH the playoff coverage with all their “joined in progree” junk!!! at least with NBC in the mix, they’re utilizing other NBC stations…

    FKA PakiFro Reply:

    @Stuart,

    They’re doing games on CNBC this year as well and NHL Net will pick up anything that’s left off their schedule. Presumably, if Pit/Phi goes to OT, then the Kings game will start on CNBC if Det/Nash ends in regulation. If that also goes to OT, I can only assume NHL Net will pick up the start of the game.

    Of course, non of this matters if you live in FSNW/PT regions. An unfortunate side effect of the new deal is Center Ice will show zero playoff games so you’re truly stuck with whatever the NBC family of networks gives you.

    @Paul G, Kings scored 8 goals in those 3 games. Bernier let in 9. I don’t blame Bernier bacusse it’s not fair to sit so long, then start cold, but your support theory doesn’t apply right now, and if it did, then the last thing we want is the Kings scoring less going into the playoffs.

    Blaming the goalies when they’ve carried this team into the playoffs is lame anyway. Those plays that you point your finger at as “houseleague” happen to every goalie in the league, and Quick lets them in less than any of them (aside from Lundqvist).

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @DesertKing, I’m willing to guarantee you DL and DS return. The reasoning goes that Sutter did turn the team around, and didn’t get the opportunity to make it “his team.” They’re all going to want to see what he can do when he gets an offseason to plan and a preseason to prepare his team.

    Makes sense, with DS, but that is only if DL returns, and if we don’t go beyond the first round, DL will be gone.

    FKA PakiFro Reply:

    @DesertKing,

    I think AEG is too cheap for that scenario. Those guys have contracts that will continue to be paid while the team doesn’t have that much flexibility on the guys Lombardi has signed/brought in long-term.

    Before posting to these types of comments, I guess everyone should ask themselves…who replaces him? When Taylor was let go, Lombardi was an obvious choice. Same with Yzerman in Tampa Bay and Stan Bowman in Chicago. A good GM is harder to find than a good coach, and quite frankly, regardless of the outcome of the series, Lombardi has done a decent job bringing in good players at reasonable costs. No one would have thought Penner would have his worst 80-100 games ever since the trade or that Simmonds would score more than Richards. At the time of the trades, everyone would do those over and over again.

    I think the onus really is on the players now. You can fire coaches and managers all day and night, but the players play. There’s an excellent core and a solid supporting cast. It’s undisputed. Its up to them to make it come together now.

    King Alex Reply:

    @John, DL & DS both stay. AEG is not going to fire DL which would result in the firing of DS and pay yet another coach on top of what thay already pay TM (Boo-Just for you Puck!). AEG is not going to use the playoff revenue and season seat price increase generated to pay 2 ex coaches and an ex GM. This post season’s success or failure will not cost DL IMO. DL has 1 more year under contract to get it right or hit the bricks. Next season will be the season DL & DS are in the pressure cooker.

In uniform right now Penner is useless and a major liability against Vancouver. At this point I would much rather see Westgarth play in his place

    Last season Westgarth and Clifford gave the Sharts nighmares, scored goals and beat the pulp out of them. I hope DS makes the move.

    Try Nolan with Stoll and Lewis in the third line. Even if they do not score much, we can roll two serious bottom energy and punishing lines (3rd & 4th)

    @Gustavo, All this Penner agst. Penner might not be putting up points, but playing Westy 4 minutes instead, isn’t the answer. Bernier has alot of shot to become number 1 not Quick Fault that Bernier hasnt show what he can do…

    Quick came in and take number 1…Bernier needs to do that to become what he wants…Its plain and simple..

    U dont like Quick then oh well get over it…U can say what u want its never going to change a thing…Dean has seen what Quick can do…That why he trust in his Head coach because he seen the same thing as Dean..So what Bernier got drafted 1st in 2006.Doesnt mean he the best in the world..

    Quick in top of the league as long with Lundqvist.Bernier hasnt gotten there..Yea he didnt play alot of games this year but when he was in net..He let soem goals that he should of saved but didnt.Bernier needs to know how to play when he a backup goalie to over come Quick for a starter goalie..Maybe in the preseason next season he learn to steal it..

    So what am saying leave Quick alone not his fault and no he doesnt choke in the playoffs.He cant save Cross ice passes all the time…He cant save 2 on 1 all the time…He cant save impossibles shots all the time…

    Interesting:

    Penner v. Vancouver: 4GP 1G 0A 1P -1 2PIMs 8 SOG
    Richardson v. Vancouver: 2GP 1G 0A 1P +2 2PIMs 7 SOG

    Their splits are almost identical except for one, and that’s a big one in this series. Richardson’s speed has kept him from being a liability defensively against a fast Vancouver team.

    I think what it comes down to is this: Which Penner shows up? We’ve seen him give flashes, at times, of going back to the player we thought he could be. There are times when he’s made a move on the ice with the puck that make me want to believe in him, because I’ve not seen many guys his size have hands as good as his. The problem is effort, something which Brad Richardson never short-changes his team.

    So, do you want the speedier, tireless Brad Richardson who doesn’t have a lot of skill, or do you want the slow, but massive body in the corner with Penner? I seem to remember that when Penner was with the Ducks, he had a different gear in the playoffs, and that’s what caused Edmonton to throw that ridiculous contract his way.

    Plus, hate it as we might, he was a key player in the Ducks winning the Cup, something which Brad Richardson cannot say.

    I break them down head to head this way:

    Skill: Penner
    Potential: Penner
    Cup winner: Penner
    Size: Penner

    Speed: Richardson
    Effort: Richardson
    Heart/Grit: Richardson

    Bottom line, I think Sutter gives Penner ONE game to prove himself. I think Sutter likes the possibility of a big guy like Penner (who has a lot to prove) throwing his weight around and wearing down Vancouver’s defense. After that, all bets are off.

    I agree with that. Once Carter came on board, the guys on the third line finally fell into place, because they weren’t being asked to play outside of their role. That’s why I think Penner will remain in the lineup, but I think the margin of error for him will be slim.

With that said, I am now hoping that his playoff performance also rises as the rest of his game did this season. Great goaltenders win their teams a Cup and this playoff season is his first real chance to become that type of goalie. It may not happen this season but, I sure hope that progression in him starts with these playoffs. This playoff season is also a chance for other Kings veterans, Kopitar Brown Doughty, to start showing that they can be great playoff players. No matter what happens in these playoffs, I will be happy if these guys show they are ready to be playoff leaders of this team. That would make the next 5 years of Kings’ playoff hockey very interesting!

    To me it seems like the effectiveness of the Stoll, Lewis, Penner line depends on Penner’s play. When he’s on top of his game like he was before the last several games, that line was cycling the puck well, had good possession time in the offensive zone and generated some good scoring opportunities. The last few games, Penner seems to have lost his edge and that line has been invisible… Then again, I suspect if one of three forwards on any line is takings shifts off, the line is not likely to be particularly effective…

    More than that in the last two games (mostly in the 3rd period of the last game), the thing that was most aggravating to me was the constant ragging of the puck deep in the defensive. No break outs with any speed, no forecheck… Bad, boring hockey…
