Sutter on Carter: `Every day is better’

We’re now well into the late-season mode in which injury updates will be about as forthcoming as secrets from the CIA. Teams aren’t required to disclose specific injuries, or the progress of injured players, so they don’t. So any updates on Jeff Carter, from here on out, will almost certainly be vague. Carter didn’t practice today, and Darryl Sutter did indicate that Carter won’t play again until he at least gets a full-team practice. Whether that is tomorrow, a week from now or beyond, that is anyone’s guess. Here’s the complete update from Sutter on Carter…

SUTTER: “He’s working out. Every day is better. … He hasn’t skated yet, no. But he’s walking good. Every day is better.’’

If Carter is walking there is little to no doubt in my mind that he will play in the season finale at the Shark Tank if the Kings lose tomorrow. Otherwise he’ll be held out until the playoffs begin. I doubt that Carter got resued from the Blue Jackets just to miss the playoffs because of an ankle that isn’t broken or described as the dreaded high ankle sprain.

@Forum67, Carter should only play in the finale if it’s a must win for the kings. rest the guy

Dallas must be real depressed right now. How long were they in first? Now no playoffs… well, unless they win both and one of the 3 teams lose both. I’m glad we’re not them.

@LA_1968, That happened to the Kings in 2005/2006. They were first overall in mid Jan. Out of the playoffs by April, (or was it March). I believe that was the season when they lost the final 10+ games in a row.

If the team can keep bringing the intensity they played with in the last game then we should be alright. We may not run the table on the Sharks without Carter, but we’ll certainly get in the playoffs.

One thing I’ve learned about DS is that he isn’t going to let on anything that could be useful to the other team. I don’t necessarily believe a word of what DS says about who will or will not play. He is gonna keep the other team guessing which means he will also leave us guessing.

@Duncanz, Glad I had the right answer to your question that was in an older post. I wasn’t sure you saw it since I replied to it late. Big fan of the Monkees. Still sad that Davey Jones is gone. Instead of buying me a drink, you can donate the money to the ‘Kings For The Cup Fund’ By the way, how many Kings fans are in Kingman, Arizona?

    Duncanz Reply:

@Steve W, Errr, the same number as there are Bruiins fans in Big Bear?
Glad there was somebody with some smarts and culture that showed up to give it a go, Stevie.
Shame about Davey, yeah. Too young by far. They might well be the greatest ‘manufactured’ band of all time!
In any case, as long as LAK, & the titanic Toffees are winning, I’m good these days – & LAG, of course.

Assuming his ankle bone bruise was from getting hit by a shot, I wonder how much those little plastic deals that go over the skates actually help vs. hinder skating? I know a lot of d-men starting to wear them. If they aren’t too noticeable by the skater, makes me wonder if teams should start “encouraging” guys to wear them. Seem a shame to miss games due to a broken or bruised foot if those deals would help that.

Personally, never used them so I don’t know how much you even feel them when you’re skating. Any of you guys use them?

    [Reply]

    CStaubs17 Reply:

@Mudfish4, I use them after basically enduring what Carter is going through.

I got hit on the side of the foot and thought for sure it was broken, but alas it was just a bad bruise.

The plastic covers over the skate do work very well, but they do no completely go all the way down each side of the boot so I cannot comment on whether it would have saved Jeff or not from injury or at least lessen it.

@CStaubs17, He said he caught his toe against the boards in the Minnesota game. The puck protector would not have helped in this situation.

    @CStaubs17,

I once bruised a foot bone playing soccer and broke my ankle. To be honest I would walk better on my broken ankle. Bruised bones take a long time to heel and it feels like being hit by a hammer every time you take a step. Realistically I hope Carter returns by reg. season end, but it just might not come to pass.

Any injury obfuscations will need to come from Sutter. DL, M.D. cannot violate the Hippocratic oath.

    Duncanz Reply:

@JackKent Cooke, Besides the requisite re-signings, blockbuster trades, and minor league call-ups, etc, the good doctor’s most important contributions this season have been to weigh in rather heavily on ‘Clockgate’, and recently again on ‘Clog-gate’.
His hands-on style in dealing with all issues related to coulombs in extension or whitey spots on X Rays is gonzo management at its finest.
