Carter: Ankle is `pretty sore’

Jeff Carter went to the rink for today’s morning skate but never got out of his suit. Carter wore a walking boot and actually left the arena on crutches. I caught Carter for a brief chat, and it sounds highly doubtful that his injured ankle will allow him to play before Monday, at the earliest.

CARTER: “It’s pretty sore. I think we’re just being precautious right now, keeping the weight off it and stuff like that.”

Question: Have they given you any kind of a timetable?

CARTER: “No, we’ll wait until we get back to see our doctors and stuff like that.”

Question: How did you get hurt?

CARTER: “I caught my toe going to get a puck along the boards. I hit one of their guys’ skates and just rolled it off.”

Question: You had a bit of an ankle injury earlier this season, right? A sprain?

CARTER: “Yeah, but that was nothing. One game, I think.”

    I’ve re-read his one quote of catching his toe 5 times and as a guy whose played hockey competitively for 16 years, I can’t for the life of me figure out what he means by catching his toe on another skate and rolling it off?? Makes it sound like he was wearing sandals on the ice? Any doctors out there?

    [Reply]

    wavesinair Reply:

    @KINGCANADA87,

    I read it simply as the skating equivalent to steeping on a someone’s foot just like going for a rebound in basketball. I’ve done that a few times and man does that hurt. Of course, I’m sure rolling an ankle happens in baseball too, but… well you know.

    [Reply]

    KINGCANADA87 Reply:

    @wavesinair, Pro skates have toes that are made out of kevlar reinforced ballistic nylon, which is then even further wrapped by an outer protecting fabric… pretty darn tough to hurt your toes by being stepped on.

    apol21 Reply:

    @KINGCANADA87, have also played for 15+ years and don’t know what he means. But it doesn’t sound like a one-game thing, especially an ankle injury for a bigger guy like Carter.

    Osaka Reply:

    @KINGCANADA87, I’ve done the same thing as Jeff. Toe of the skate caught the back of another skate while taking a stride and putting weight down on the leg. The foot is behind you so you sort of roll the ankle when you put the weight down.

    I think we may be reading more into it then we need to – the Kings are being precautious on his ankle to keep weight off so it heals quicker. I just had a bad sprain and i could limp around but the doctors basically said it will only fully get better in 2-4 weeks of rest, but you can speed it up by using crutches. I’m pretty sure if this were the playoffs he’d be in.

    A sprain is strained ligaments (i believe) so barring any tear, he just needs to rest as much as he can, not much else you can do.

    By saying his foot rolled off someone else’s skate, i think he just means that he stepped and his foot didn’t come flat on the ice and it rolled funny as he put more weight on it

Still took them to 7 games, but as I remember neither boarding was called. But you have to give it to Colorado they charged then hit hard right between the numbers. So much for cheaters never prospering they won the cup that year. Wow, its been 10 years and I am still bitter.

  22. KC23 says:

    I find this interesting.

    Willie Mitchel 71 games played. 5 goals and 14 assists and a +16 paired with a rookie most the season. Never gets PP time.

    Jarret Stoll 73 games played. 5 goals, 14 assists and a +4 regularly playing on our PP.

    Pretty sad when your stay at home defenseman playing with a rookie can keep up with your one of your PP centers.

    Stoll would make an excellent 4th line center, but our 3rd line needs to be upgraded in the worst way.

    He Shoots, He Scores Reply:

    @KC23,
    Appreciate the faceoff ability, but would it kill him to have some discipline? Always running people from behind with his elbows up…not sure who’s worse between him and Greene…

    [Reply]

    purple and gold Reply:

    @KC23, he is out there to win the faceoff, as long as he is wining them he is worth it on the power play. We have enough trouble getting the pp to enter the zone. If we lost precious faceoff wins in the o zone on the pp we might not have a pp goal all season (im exagerating but I think you get the point.) Not to mention Stoll played out of position and with a lackadaisical penner, and a post concussed Richards for a good portion of the season, that would hurt anyone’s production.

    [Reply]

    BigMikeonD Reply:

    @KC23, You do know that PP doesn’t count for the +/- correct?

    [Reply]

    luuc Reply:

    @BigMikeonD,

    I was thinking the same thing at first, but I take he mentions that more to point out how well Mitchell has done having to “cover” for a rookie. Flipside of that though, I would say Stoll’s line has gotten a lot of the top defensive matchups throughout the year, so that hurts +/- too.

    Does anyone remember what this team looked like BEFORE Carter got here? That doesn’t bode well for the remaining games of the season, especially if Carter is (suprise!) out for the remainder of the regular season.
